I feel bad for the plaintiff. I believe their money was stolen. I hope they can recover or have recovered from this. $900 is A LOT of money for most to just lose like that. I feel so bad.
"I don't know how you could collect that, it sounds like a ransom." That's actually how most tow companies operate and make their money. In fact, if you get back to your car in time but they already hooked it up, most of them will tell you something like "I'll drop your vehicle right now if you give me X amount of money." Which is quite literally the definition of a ransom.
I feel bad for the plaintiffs - $900 loss hurts and was probably much needed. Defendants were slimy and knew the law would be on their side (i.e. being a repo company, the plaintiffs’ race, etc.), and took advantage of that.
When I was in my early 20s I lived across the street from a laundry mat where I dropped off my laundry every week to get done. One day, I took out $400 to give to my roommate for my share of the rent. I went home that night after stopping at the bank, gathered my clothes and took off what I had on, then dropped my laundry off. The next day I pick it up in the morning and that night my roommate asks me for the rent money. I then realized I never took it out of the pants I was wearing and it went into the laundry I dropped off. I tore the bag opened and found the pants but the money was gone. I went to the laundry mat and asked if they found it and of course they said no. I had no other way to prove otherwise so I was out $400. Sometimes, we as humans are careless and we get stuck in shitty scenarios. I believe they took the money cause they knew she couldn't prove it, but I would've cut my losses and moved on. It sucks but I know when I'm fighting an uphill battle in a downstream world.

"I don't know how you could collect that, it sounds like a ransom."
That's actually how most tow companies operate and make their money. In fact, if you get back to your car in time but they already hooked it up, most of them will tell you something like "I'll drop your vehicle right now if you give me X amount of money." Which is quite literally the definition of a ransom.
