It really amazes me how much people abuse they're consoles. How can you destroy these consoles this badly? I still have my 16 year old PS2 I've had since 2005, and it literally STILL LOOKS THE SAME as it did when I unboxed it. My Xbox One of 8 years since 2014, same thing: still LOOKS THE EXACT SAME. I'll never understand how people tear up their consoles cosmetically with liquids, scratches and just dirt in general.

Parents taking their kids consoles away as a punishment and just throwing them in a closet or a box not knowing how fragile they can be. My dad used to turn off my ps4 by just unplugging it from the wall whenever he stopped using it until I explained to him it can damage it in the long run.

@@nexxusty Yeah. It saddens me to see these beautiful fat Backwards compatible PS3s abused. If I ever owned one from the beginning, I would never let them get this bad. I got one used a year ago, and it didn't last long because the previous owner did not take good care of it. I since then got a slim one in pretty good condition, and it runs perfectly. I plan to take care of it as best as possible, it's been good for over a year now, still running great.

This was awesome, sir. I started working on PS3 phats back in 2010 and after a lot of trial and error, managed to fix several dozen. I wish I knew about the capacitors back then because I always either reflowed them or reballed the GPU and then put back on. Like you, I kept the backwards compatible one for myself and the other ones, I sold. I still have one I reballed that lasted about 5 yrs but YLOD came back. I believe I'll do the capacitors like you did and see if that will bring it back to life. Thanks!!

Good choice on keeping the BC one. I got myself two (the chrome one, and the FULL BLACK trim one) and the black one is a bit of a pain to get on track but it's hopefully coming together soon. I'll try the cap replacement on the topside as I got nothing to lose. A plus to the board I had received yesterday for it (which doesn't yet work) is the CPU and GPU were delidded, so I guess that's a big plus.
EDIT: High chances it's the caps - I see burn marks under the NEC plastic bodies.

If I can at least make it known, its not the capacitors. These GPU chips were not designed correctly at the factory. Sony and Microsoft were affected, and thats why these early systems failed. They realized what was happening and fixed it with the later revisions. If you want to save the classic PS3, take a GPU from a newer one thats compatible, and place it in there and follow the tutorials online.

It looks like if I had to make an estimate about 35% of YLOD is because of the caps, remaining would be GPU failure of either bumps or BGA balls.

It's not the capacitors. That solution is also temporary. The issue actually goes super deep, like shockingly so. If you're interested here's a video that explains the science history and mechanics of the YLOD. ua-cam.com/video/I0UMG3iVYZI/v-deo.html it also explains how and why the balls getting changed or the capacitors getting replaced will fix it for a few weeks/months or maybe a few years before going right back to being dead.

I do however reccomend replacing the nec caps though since generally they are old and will also fail 3-5 years down the line at a semi worldwide scale considering the life span of them plus the release date of the PS3. same thing happened with the PS2 and original xbox.

Hey, is not a good idea to have a backwards compatible ps3 console in such small place. It's true it expels heat on the rear side, but it does too on the right side. Even in the best of the cases is not a good place because those places have a very poor ventilation.

yo I was impressed you got the last one working despite chipping the tracers on the CPU, how did you know which tracers to jump wire back into the board? God knows one too many folk tried delidding their PS3s and ended up "killing" them by chipping the tracers. I'm looking to open my PS3 as well in order to make it less noisy - but you know, delidding is scary.
I was thinking of actually cutting a 3mm thin square hard eraser and inserting it in the "hole" on the back of the Motherboard where the small CPU capacitors are, because of a design flaw in the CELL cpu in which the die actually loses contact with the IHS, which is what causes the compound to dry up/overheat, I've read a lot online that it DOES work and it's a viable alternative to delidding, but I've never seen enough video evidence.

Will there be any problems later? And the last question, how are the ps3 2500a? Like Fat, they don't have a yellow light problem? Sorry for the many questions, please help me by answering them
More detailed information: when the console has not been turned on for at least 5 hours and when you turn it on, the temperature is sometimes 34 and sometimes 40 degrees with a fan speed of 20 and in 5 minutes the temperature reaches 60 to 67 (cpu 67 rsx 64) and If you stay in the menu like this, the temperature reaches 72 and sometimes 75, and when you enter the game and play the game "Battlefield 4", the temperature reaches 76-77 and the fan 40, when the fan is 40, reduce the temperature from 77 to 72-73 gives and never goes higher
