I've never played the course but have walked it and definitely want to play it one day. I totally agree with Seb on the history of St Andrews. The town is amazing and a place I will never get sick of visiting. Great history and drinking places.
Played the Old Course for the 1st time 2 years ago (aged 46) , was shaking on 1st tee. As a 5 handicap have played many big matches and important courses but its still a special on that 1st tee. Shot a 70 nett 65 and have the scorecard framed on a wall in the house. Holed a putt from 10ft for par on the 17th and just thought about Seve Ballesteros having stood there. Its maybe not a spectacular golf course but its prestige makes it a must play. Never ever forget that day!!!

I have been lucky enough to play all the top 100 by Golf World in GB&I. Birkdale and Portrush are great but I would play the Old first every day. You have multiple choices on every tee and even more on your approach. Between that and the weather, it never gets old. 18 on paper is a pedestrian hole, but I have driven the green, putted from 60 yards, pitched with a wedge, chipped from 130 with a 6-iron and hit a full 3-wood. And all that coming into one of the most charming towns in the world. Finish 18 late on a summer night and buildings are spectacular.

Very fair and honest assessment. I’ve played it a couple times and as far as courses go it’s got some forgettable holes.....but it’s the home of golf and you cannot forget that! 🏌️♂️
Yeah, get that it's 1, 17 & 18 that stick in the memory. The rest of it is fairly easy, standard Scottish links. What you have to do when playing it is take a wee moment to yourself on a couple of holes, especially when you turn back to town, and take in that skyline. Remember where you are, the drama you watched unfold here any number of times on the tv. Its spine-tingling.
While I was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Air Force back in the 80's, a group of us made the trip to Scotland specifically to play The Old Course and what these guys said is true. The history of the course, the surrounding town and just the atmosphere of Scotland is absolutely fabulous but as for the course, it's quite normal for a links course in Europe. Spot on Kevin. I'm a local ticket holder and have played there for over 30 years and it can be different every time you play depending on wind/weather and what sort of bounce you get. Tiger won "The Open" there in 2000 with a score of 18 under that equates to -4.5 shots a round. He had 4 days of sunshine and no wind, back then he could murder any course in these conditions. To all the folk who think it's so easy I say " If you play the Old a day with a stiff cross wing and you don't have a local caddie holding your hand you won't score anywhere near par" IMHO of course.

I’ve been very fortunate to go to St. Andrews many times and play the old course in every season and condition. The first time can be a little underwhelming outside of the 1st 17th and 18th holes. But I assure you, the more you play it the more you fall in love with it. The wind is it’s biggest defense.
Been playing golf for about half a year an absolutely love it and play 3 to 5 times a week but to me as someone with no long term fond memories of great championships gone by I could see how this wouldn’t be an amazing golf course to visit. Only if you have a lifetime of memories could I see it being a must visit course.
I won a golf day with Mercedes and stayed at the hotel there and had a meal in the R&A behind the 18th green but never played the old course we played Kingbarnes instead and what a course that is Superb!
Completely disagree. The course is brilliant, architecturally as good as a golf course can be. I think people think it's cool to say the course isn't that good. I understand some holes are quite similar, but the whole vibe of the place is amazing and the course couldm't be designed today
St Andrews is a great place shrouded in mystery and history. However the golf course is pretty ordinary, apart from a few holes. Personally I feel Carnoustie is a much better challenge and Golf course.
I would imagine most people play this course because of its history, not the standard of the course.. it’s really a non question.. many people will not have the opportunity to play it. I’m sure we could all find fault with every course if we wanted. Disappointing end to the video.
Pass . It's cold, windy, and many times very damp and foggy. The course is really nothing special except for it's historic significance which is HUGE and extremely enjoyable. Unless you simply must experience the history and ambiance, pass on this. There are many, many fantastic golf courses that provide scratch handicapper and hacker alike a better overall golf experience (except historic). .
I’m sure I’ll get slaughtered for this but forget The Home of Golf for a moment & this has to be the worst current Open course?? No way should they play it every 5 years. When I went there I was so disappointed with it.. Shocking for spectator viewing as well.. and for today’s top pros it’s way to easy.. Doesn’t compare in the slightest with Royal Birkdale🤔🤔 (for me)..
I haven’t played them all, and certainly think it’s the history that brings it back here so much. I don’t mind that though to be honest. Something cool about the guys wanting to win on the most historic course in the world!
Seb On Golf ... Yep I get that, but as we saw this year there are far better links courses out there to play.. There have been suggestions over the years that the Open should be permanently held there, now that would be a joke..
Your takeaway is awful and you’ve got so much head movement it’s unreal. I mean for a 4 handicapper your swing is dreadful. Peters swing on the other hand is phenomenal. Just saying. 🤦🏻♂️
This is an awful comment 😂 everyone's swing is different sebs is perfect for him and got him to a level were alot of amateurs will not get to.. are you going to criticise Rahm, Stenson, Garcia, Jim furyk, dustin Johnson or bubba Watson for having bad take aways or alot of movement in their swing? 😂
Gitzer24 Chris but Rahm, Stenson, Garcia and Dustin swing it well though...it’s attractive to watch...all I’m saying is that Sebs isn’t. Can’t moan about a guy being honest. All entitled to our own opinion. He’s clearly a pretty handy golfer, no doubt about that, but just like Furyks swing...need to look away, it’s just not right lol.

Great video it's was the top of my list but I've been told it's a real pain to get on it was my dream to play the old course but have been put off wanting to try to and get on
Stick with it; loads of other great golf up there also 👍🏻
Go play the castle course while your there it's fantastic 👍👍
Hopefully will next time
Yeah castle course has some really stunning holes !!
I agree with your comments Seb.
My old course bunker would be 2 for me
Arrived at 4am got on at 7am. Well worth the effort. Only advise is to miss the bunkers. Shot 89 but with two 8’s on par 4s. What could have been....
Those bunkers are no joke!
Has to be No 2 on mine behind Augusta
When Seb swings he looks like he's got a metal spike in his neck - has he got an injury or is it just waaaay too much tension?
Prolapsed disc in back sadly ☹️
@@SebOnGolf Sorry to hear that bud. I won't lie i kept thinking 'why doesn't someone tell him to stop that' lol. Fair play to you then, that's some nasty, painful shit.
Paul Brown it’s not too bad now that I have had a procedure on it, but left me with this dodgy looking swing 🤣
We played Carnoustie years ago when we were just hackers,no handicaps.crap clubs,
With a gale force wind.
I lost at least a dozen balls hit about 60 over and still won.......what a week
From insta. 1) Kapalua plantation 2)Augusta 3) Ganton Golf Club
Top man, thanks Harry. Great list!
Who picked the music, really!
I’ve been very fortunate to go to St. Andrews many times and play the old course in every season and condition. The first time can be a little underwhelming outside of the 1st 17th and 18th holes. But I assure you, the more you play it the more you fall in love with it. The wind is it’s biggest defense.
So I hear. Hoping I get another shot one day
Number 2, behind Augusta
What would be three?
Seb On Golf Cypress Point 😉
Do you intentionally thin most of your shots?
🤣🤣🤣 definitely not!
Seb On Golf you could of said yes as it was windy but fair play for the honesty 😂 👍🏻
Play the New Course and Eden and Jubilee and Kingsbarn and Lundin and . . .
Royal Aberdeen to go with that list. Pete raves about that one
Seb - great to he true 💪💪💪👍👍👍
Be even 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Apocryphal story: Sam Snead's first time at St. Andrews. Where's the golf course? he said.
Interesting
Been playing golf for about half a year an absolutely love it and play 3 to 5 times a week but to me as someone with no long term fond memories of great championships gone by I could see how this wouldn’t be an amazing golf course to visit. Only if you have a lifetime of memories could I see it being a must visit course.
I won a golf day with Mercedes and stayed at the hotel there and had a meal in the R&A behind the 18th green but never played the old course we played Kingbarnes instead and what a course that is Superb!
What’s a birides is it better than a birdie? 😂😂
Agree. Non-descript and honestly a bit boring. Nice shape and history can't make up for some things. Sawgrass and kapalua blow it away.
Both also on my list 🤞🏻
Your second shot on the 1st hole just proves you don’t play off 4
Completely disagree. The course is brilliant, architecturally as good as a golf course can be. I think people think it's cool to say the course isn't that good. I understand some holes are quite similar, but the whole vibe of the place is amazing and the course couldm't be designed today
Just my honest option Pete, have only played it once though. Can’t disagree with the vibe though, I got chills!
St Andrews is a great place shrouded in mystery and history. However the golf course is pretty ordinary, apart from a few holes. Personally I feel Carnoustie is a much better challenge and Golf course.
Would love to play Carnoustie one day also 🤞🏻
Seb On Golf you should try and play it. It would make a good vid
It’s the home of golf and I like the history but given the choice I’d play Trump Turnberry over it all day long.
vid won't play, tried 3 x's
Strange, what happens when you try?
No clue...
If you want to play a better golf course you should of played the fairmont St. Andrews, 10 times better then the old course ⛳️🏌️♂️
Hoping to play that and a few others next time I head up there 🤞🏻
Typical sub-average golfer with a bit of money and all the top gear... status over ability
Just a big field with 18 holes stuck in it. Valderrama for me, a proper golf course designed by Trent Jones Sr
First
I would imagine most people play this course because of its history, not the standard of the course.. it’s really a non question.. many people will not have the opportunity to play it. I’m sure we could all find fault with every course if we wanted. Disappointing end to the video.
Sorry to hear you feel that way Jim, but thanks for tuning in 👊🏻
IT WONT PLAY
What won’t?
@@SebOnGolf the video wasn't playing, but now it is mate. all good!
Stupid annoying music which made me quit the video.
Gayboys
Thanks for the feedback Fernando, thank god for my short game I guess 🤣🤷🏼♂️
@@fbf01 Im sure he lost a lot of sleep cause you dont like his takeaway, your a bellend mate, nothing nice to say, just dont comment...!
