I am an engineer. I make good money doing what I do, but it feels like a rat race. I'm dying to jump into this business. I've bought an older skid steer (Bobcat T190), and older gooseneck trailer, and I'm praying my 03 F350 V10 will hang in there and help me get off the ground. I really appreciate your channel and seeing your progress. It certainly helps me have the confidence to try to make the transition. Thank you for your videos and I'm looking forward to more content!

I loved the video man. I just started my own excavation business back in January. Went out and bought a ram 3500 dually, 20ft gooseneck and a 1996 bobcat 751. I still work mon-Thursday at my full time job and work for myself fri-sat. Been having trouble with my bobcat and I’ve been spending thousands the last 2 months and I have all these jobs already quoted out. I have had to rent to be able to get by and received news that my bobcat is in need of a $3600 part. Well I’m already a few grand over what it’s worth and I don’t wanna keep digging that hole. Heard back from the bank today that I’m not able to get approved for a newer machine. Today I was ready to give up on it. I got home late from work and I normally eat dinner in the kitchen but I had this feeling there was something decent to watch on UA-cam so I went to the living room sat down and was looking thru suggested and I seen your video pop up over the weekend but I was catching up on some other people I am subscribed to. But tonight I clicked on your video and I tell you what, I couldn’t have watched a better video to get me up out of the dumps and boost my motivation back up. Thank you Cole! You have a new sub! I’m also from north west Ohio.

@@MORE_DIRT359 yes I actually worked at one growing up and part time as an adult. The availability sucks sometimes and it sucks that I can’t just grab mine whenever I need to go do something I gotta call and set it up. It’s an extra pain but it’s doable to get me by I guess. Bobcat has treated me well. When my machine was there they didn’t charge me for a rental and I thought that was crazy. They know I’m starting out and struggling so they wanted to help a dude out and I couldn’t feel more appreciative. I’m still in the driveway and yard leveling stage looking to move onto bigger things soon!

I've been doing excavation work for the last 25 years.. Since covid, it has gotten alot tougher to stay busy with it. There are just as many excavator/bobcat/dumptrailer combos as there are lawn mowers running around now. Alot of the newbies don't have the business experience to know their true cost of running a business and are driving prices down. What makes it worst, is that alot of these people filed for the covid relief money with illegitimate or non existing businesses and basically got their brand new equipment for free.

I could use some advice. I'm 21, I've got a 99 F450, a Bobcat S185, and a 20ft equipment trailer. I have a brush cutter and a bucket and access to rent all kinds of stuff. There's a bobcat dealer in town so I can rent other attachments, and there's another place I can rent a dump trailer if I need it. I've done basic dirt work with the bucket and it turned out decent but I know I lack experience with that. I'm much more confident with the brush cutter, I've had quite a few hours on that. I want to start doing work part-time outside of my regular job. I have 3-4 days off every week and my regular job pays well enough that I don't have to rely on this in any way. I'll start by putting up an ad for brush cutting, there's lots of kudzu and brush where I'm from. I'll offer general bucket work or any other attachments, but my focus will be brush-cutting until I've worked up enough experience on other stuff. I need advice as far as what things to focus on, how to start getting jobs as a new guy, etc. Thanks in advance!

Social media, (facebook has groups in your area, find them and market everyday if you can. Instagram works ok for me, but I have heard mixed opinions on it)
Word of mouth is going to be your easiest deals to close, as you are getting referred from someone they most likely already know and trust. So make sure your jobs are done on time and go over and beyond!
Tell everyone you talk to what you do and hand out business cards.
Ask people if you can put up yard signs for a month, and you will knock some money off the project cost, or if someone has an empty lot, ask if you can put up a sign and pay them a fee every month.
When people call ask them how they heard about you, this is very important. That way you know what’s working and what is not.
Do get caught up in a bunch of debt trying to look awesome, keep your equipment clean. A little logo on the truck, some business cards and tshirts with your business name and phone number is enough in the beginning. Buy when you need not when you want.
Don’t get discouraged when you loose money, because you will! Consider it tuition payed to the school of business!
      Under promise and over deliver!
If you are honest, do good work and hustle your a$$ off, you will have too much work in 6 months to a year!
      Best of luck!

Hey Cole, been watching a ton of videos on this business and so far yours are the best to watch. Hoping I could get your help. Currently I am stuck in an office job. I’m 38 years old. I’m just sick of it. I have always been an outdoors guy. Restore cars, chop down trees, fish, hunt. I just got stuck in the corporate ladder and can’t get out. I recently inherited $150k cash. And I feel like this is my opportunity to get out of the corporate world. Any chance we could talk on what I should do? I live in the PNW…a lot of people are building here (annoying Cali people) but they have money and I’ll take it from them lol. But I have 5 acres I live on. I was thinking I could buy the equipment outright and work and learn on my land for 3-4 mo the before I made the jump to a full time business. I just have no idea where to start? Like what size Kubota to buy? I saw some with these attachments that basically mulch stumps and brush, which I think would be best out here, but I don’t even know where to begin on buying one and which brand is best, how many hours is too many? Etc. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lived in Fort Wayne for about 5 years now and now that my wife is pregnant we're moving back toward family in Lebanon here soon. I worked to keep us afloat while she got her masters degree, she makes good money now and when we move in a month or two I'm buying a mini ex and getting started. She says it's her turn to keep us afloat while I get my income like hers is. The future looks good.

I don't even want to make that much money really. I just want the freedom. I drive an hour to work one way. Stinks burning that much day. I own a Cat 289D but no way to haul it, no trailer, no truck big enough. I bought it to clear my land to build a house and I was gonna just sell it afterward, but now I'm wondering if I can make enough to buy it back from myself and then generate enough income to be able to go on mission trips with my family. You think it's possible? I'm okay with the operation of the machine, but my 19yo son has the gift of operation on these things. Maybe we could work together.

I have an excavation business in North Carolina. Have a skidsteer a kubota excavator an older john deere 455E track loader 2 dodge 3500 ton trucks 2 trailers and a john deere tractor. My problem is that theres not enough work. I pay the bills but struggle through the winter. Luckily all my equipment is paid for. I'd like to know how you managed to find the work. Everyone that lives here have started doing the same thing. Seems like everyone has went out bought 3 or 4 brand new machines and I dont know how they make it. Most my work is repairing the crap these guys screw up. I dont have a shop either. Have to work on all my equipment outside. But I usually do better work cause I tr ake pride and live what I do. My work is mostly from work of mouth though. I wanted to know if you advertise anywhere and how do you go about that.

I’ll be honest I struggle in the winter too but I trust God’s plan and he always keeps my bills paid and the phone rings when it’s suppose too.

This business is very do it your self, meaning you have to basically call every phone number they put in the book and make yourself a little script to say every time you call. If you wait for it to come to you, it never will and if it does it won’t pay the bills. You just have to call call call, out of the 10 you call you may get one job out of it and it’s well worth it. Best thing invented for our business type was the cell phone and google, I google swimming pool companies, excavation companies, home builders etc. and bug them all the time, you never know, you just may call the same company you called last month and their skid steer guys machine is down or they had a falling out. Don’t lose hope brother, God will help you, just help him do you a favor and pick up phone
