Mt Everest South Approach and North Approach Long

- My goal was to climb Mt. Everest by both the South approach in Nepal and the North approach in Tibet. On my second attempt, at age 67, I reached the summit from the South approach on May 23, 2009, becoming the oldest American to reach the summit and return alive. After four attempts, at age 72, I reached the summit from the North approach on May 25, 2014. I broke my 2009 record and became the oldest person living outside of Asia to reach the summit.This video documents those two climbs.
I have posted two versions of the Mt. Everest South Approach and North Approach video. One vision is titled "Mt. Everest South Approach and North Approach" and includes just the climbs of Mt. Everest from those two approaches. This version, titled "Mt. Everest South Approach and North Approach Long," is slightly longer because it includes the 35-mile trek to Base Camp on the South Approach.

Thanks for sharing your journey. Climbing Mount Everest is also one of my dreams and I wish I could but I don't think I can climb it. But I will trek to the Everest Base Camp for sure.

Great accomplishment!!To think Mallory and Irvine did this part (or somewhere in the area) on the way back, in the dark, without lamps, without oxygen and basically in boxer shorts is incomprehensible. No wonder that a minor misstep was made.
In boxer shorts? And I think they also had oxygen. I found some information on Mallory's clothing on a website called welldresseddad dot com. ( I dont know if I can leave links here) Search Mallory Jacket. There's also a photo of them taking off for the summit and they are carrying bottles of oxygen.

My Everest journey would stop at the rope bridge, absolutely no way.

Does anyone know if they stick to fixed ropes at all times or check out surrounding areas? Or even around the camps? Just wondering.
Fixed ropes at all time while climbing. Fixed ropes are not needed while exploring in safe areas around the camps.

You have asked a really good question, and I don't have a good answer. Asking my preference concerning South vs North is a little like asking which of my 4 children I love the most. The South Approach and the North Approach are very different. See eightsummits.com/mt-everest/ I think I prefer the North Approach because (i) the views of the mountain are better, (ii) the North Approach is less crowded and (iii) the North Approach is more challenging. Despite this personal preference, I always recommend the South Approach to first-time climbers because the 35-mile trek to Base Camp is, by itself, worth the trip to Nepal even if the traveler is not planning to attempt to climb Mt. Everest. Also, rescue attempts for climbers who are sick or injured are available on the South Approach, but not on the North Approach. See link above. This year, climbers do not have a choice because China has closed the North Approach.

@@GorskiNunavut And yet, during the Beijing Olympics, they carried the olympic torch through the South (Nepalese side) closing down the mountain for a few days to all the other expeditions. Because Nepal has become a vassal of China, even without a military invasion.

This is the first year climbers on the north face walked by green boots cave and found he was no longer there. Was hoping he was going to film that. There is one video on here that they did film and showed he was gone.
Is Camp 3 on a glacier? Khumbo glaciar? It is dangerios?
Yes, Khumbu Glacier. Very steep, icy & dangerous.
