Everest Base Camp Trek: Part 1 (No Guide, No Porter)

- Опубліковано 15 чер 2024
- I've made it to the Himalayan mountains, and I've set out to complete the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek. Oh, and I'm doing it completely on my own: no guide and no porter. This is Part 1 of 2.
NOTE: I trekked legally by purchasing a government permit to do so. I do this at the timestamp titled "Trek Card". I hope this helps 😀
Thank you so much for watching ❤️

I wish i could brush up to you and get some of your energy and positivity. Wonderful video! And beautiful to see you enjoying the things that most of us take for granted. Makes me want to get out there 😀🥰
Hi, Michael! Thank you for the lovely message and for all of your kind words. I'm so happy that you found me, and I really hope to see you again here very soon. If you are interested, I'd love for you to join us at the next live chat Premiere tomorrow (Sat) at 11 am EST USA 🎉
I've done this few years ago, it's definitely not easy. Thanks for the memories.
Hi, K H! It's so great to hear from you! Thank you so much for watching, and that's so great to hear that you've done this, too. I really appreciate your positive energy, and I hope to see you here again very soon.
You know whats funny? I have seen so many of these videos that I recognize the dogs. They are so dam cute. I would be the sucker to spend the day with the just the dogs lol
Haha~ Hi, Joe! That's hilarious because you are the second person that has mentioned how famous these dogs are! aw, those little puppies! I love them so much! ❤
@GoMandiMartin They are so freaking adorable. It has been so funny to see how they interact. Look how smart they are. They understand social cues from humans like it is their job. I have absolutely seen the same dogs in other videos. It was funny to see how they rule that stretch there. There was certain donkeys they didnt like and would push them through real fast. I love how you had them in your video. How could you not right?
@@JoeKyser Hey, Joe! Awwwwww! Isn't that so heartwarming haha. I wouldn't do the EBC again, but if I could borrow a teeny puppy for the duration of a different, shorter, lower-in-altitude trail -- oh my gosh, I would do it in a minute! That little tiny black puppy that was in Part 1 right before the first checkpoint: I would have scooped him up and taken him with me if I could have. But, I don't want to end up on the news as an animal smuggler haha. That's just bad for business 😁You are so right, Joe! Hm, that just got me thinking! How cool would it be if there was some kind of a system where trekkers could pick an unnamed animal and give it a name, and then, if another trekker came along and discovered an unnamed animal, then they got to name it -- and all of the trekkers from then on would know that animal's name. There could be a central log book, and the animals could be discovered and recorded as we do with new starts and planets! Ah, the possibilities!
@@JoeKyserDonkeys! I love love love donkeys! There were donkeys in some of my recent Caribbean Cruise videos 💕 I would go back --- just for the donkeys! Haha, but yes, the dogs sure do run the place with their cutie-pie faces! Right haha! I try not to be a camera hog hahahhaa, so the puppies were the perfect addition 🐶
Its such a joy to watch you being happy from small things. I hope you have a wonderful time in Nepal. You are an amazing human. Following your journey 🎉. Best wishes.
Sangam, you've made my entire evening with your message! You are a beautiful soul, and I am so lucky and so happy to have you here. Thank you for the wonderful wishes. I hope to see you back here at 3:45 pm today (Wednesday) your time/Nepal 😀
You have an amazing vibe ..... can't wait to do the EBC Trek either in Late September of 24 or 25.
You're incredible, love that you took it at your own pace.
Hi, Brian! Thank you so much for the lovely message, and thank you so much for sharing in on my journey with me. How exciting that you are planning to do the EBC yourself. I hope to hear all about it once you return 😀 Mandi

Hi, Don! It's so lovely to hear from you; thank you for the message. Oh my gosh, right! Haha. How did people ever succeed before UA-cam haha 😃
Lol same😊
@@silentclimber When I went, the Trek Card was a brand new thing, and I didn't learn about it until really late the night before my trek, and there was no footage of that, but now there is hahhhahaaa 🎉 But, gosh, yes! UA-cam is so amazing for helping with the preparation. I would be so lost without it! 😃
@@richardparker1338 Hi, Richard! I agree haha. I've found that there's a perfect balance between watching and researching just enough to be prepared without watching and researching so much that you get there and there's no fun surprises haha. Sorry for the late reaction to your channel. I hope you had a wonderful experience while you where here. love your video. Pro tips: while in the stupa's the wheel you spin must be rotating in clockwise not anti-clockwise. that goes for all the Buddhist spinning wheels.
P.S Your so lucky ! the government of Nepal has banned solo trekking.
Hi, Sagun! It's nice to hear from you. Thank you for the really sweet message. What a silly mistake haha. Lots of kindhearted locals have let me know that I was spinning the wheel the wrong way. Isn't that so sad about the ban 😟 Happy New Year!

I should be working, but I’m hooked on your video! It’s tremendous to see you trekking alone and seeing this trip through your eyes full of wonder. I have made this trek before and the first time is always such a joy. It’s good to see that you can still trek here alone, most of Nepal has changed the rules about solo trekking..I’m looking forward to heading back there later this year but to go up to Cho Oyu Basecamp. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy your journey. Thankyou 🙏
Hi, Peter, and a very happy Saturday to you! It is such a pleasure to receive your message, and you've totally made my day! Haha, I love that so much! I do the exact same thing with other creator's videos: I get so hooked and just can't stop! It's insane how addicting those really great-find videos can be -- especially if they are part of a series haha. You made me laugh out loud 😃 Wow, that's awesome that you've done the Everest Base Camp trek before! And, even more so that you are planning to go back for more! 🤩 I am overjoyed that you liked Part 1, and I hope the same will be true for Part 2 and all the other videos you try out here. Thank you again for watching and for taking the time to write and share such lovely and beautiful words. I can't wait to hear how your trip goes, and I'd love to hear updates! I hope to see you here again very soon 🍿🍿

@@peterf5318 Hi, Peter! Aw, you're welcome; it's my pleasure! Right! If I had the time, I would be in my sweats a whole lot more binge watching the best in travel that UA-cam has to offer hahhaaa. Hi Mandie, same here! What did we ever do before UA-cam! I used to love watching globe trekker but now it’s so great to pick and choose any destination you want to see. The first video I posted when I went to EBC at the beginning of Covid had a lot of views. I went back last year to do the high passes and didn’t finish but the video is on this link ua-cam.com/video/eUssfrco6YY/v-deo.html my editing isn’t great but I enjoy putting the videos together. I loved part two of your video! I’ll leave a comment on there. 😊
Hey, Peter! Happy almost weekend! Woohoo! Ops, I'm so sorry that I missed this message; sometimes new messages don't show up in the "not responded to" tab, so I just don't know they are there. Every once in a while I sift through my comments just to make sure that no one is missed 😃 And, sometimes I find gems -- like this message! Haha. Editing is tough, and doing it well is extremely time consuming and mentally exhausting (for me, at least), but gosh, there is nothing like watching your just-finished video in all of it's endless-toiled glory haha. Guides salary =3200 nrs =24$ per day. Which increased according to TAAN .Trekkers agencies nepal.😮its best to support tourism aspects. $24 == a change .. its risky to trek in monsoon.. p.s dont ask locals for how much time until you reach hotels.. they say 1 hr but it could take 2.5 hrs for you. They calculate time according to their pace..
exactly ❤

Good afternoon, Oisin! Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to write; I really appreciate you! Thank you for the very kind advice and concern. You have me curious now, so I had to look it up, and it seems that only 0.003% of people die on their way to Base Camp; that's an average of 3-5 people per year which is actually surprising as I thought it would be lower. Thankfully, I'm nice and safe for now 😊Oh, I hate, hate, hate the cold, as you'll see in Part 2 of this video next week haha, so Base Camp is probably the highest that I will ever even consider venturing, and it's 5,364 meters. You're very sweet, and thank you again for the message. I hope you have an amazing weekend!

Hi, Joe, and a huge welcome to my channel! I am so happy to have you here! You are the sweetest; thank you so much for such a lovely message -- and thank you for your kindness 🤩 You would actually do exceptional as a vegetarian! And did you see all of those gorgeous cows and chickens? Can't eat those cuties haha! It's actually suggested that meat not be eaten for the entire duration of the trek because the meat is carried up on pack animals -- and it's not refrigerated or kept clean on it's way up the mountain. You'd have quite the advantage with an already-vegetarian diet. If you decide to go, I hope you'll come back and tell me all about it, and I hope to see you next week for Part 2 of this video 😃
@@GoMandiMartin thanks for the detail explanation and I'll definitely watch Part II.
@@joewahrerMotorcycleMan You are so welcome joe, and I really look forward to seeing you then 🥳
Hi Mandi, Just want to congratulate you for recording this amazing experience. Most people avoid recording hardships during treks like these. I'm glad you covered it thoroughly. Me and my wife did the Annapurna Base Camp trek solo with no guide or porter in 2022. So i know how hard these hikes are but its worth doing it solo. I'm planning to do the EBC or Everest 3 pass trek this year and I have been binge watching all your Everest hiking videos last 2 days for research and got to say there aren't many with as much as details as yours especially about plane tickets and trek permits.
I was just curious about one thing. Why didn't you do a acclimatization day in Namchee Bazaar? I think that could have been the reason why you felt tired. When i did the ABC both me and wife had the flu/colds and since we were carrying our bags we were like super slow but that in turn helped us acclimatize and i never felt tired and slept so good. I remember seeing many people with porters faster than us but they had AMS and had to come down fast as well. A common thing i heard from locals was the word "Slowly slowly". Both of us ate super heavy as well and drank lots of water , I don't know if that helped. I also noticed you said 10kg for check-in bag for the Lukla flight. Wasn't there an option for 5kg hand carry as well?
Again much thanks for making all these videos. I'll be telling people to refer to these videos if they plan on hiking EBC.
Hi, Kevin! It's so nice to hear from you! Thank you so much for the lovely message, and I'm so overjoyed to hear that you are binge watching haha. You are so sweet; thank you for the congratulations. I'm so glad that you appreciate seeing the hardships. That's so awesome to hear about the trek you and your wife took in 2022 -- and even better, that you are planning another one! That's amazing!
That's a very valid question about Namche Bazaar. I knew that stretch would be all uphill and very strenuous, and I thought it would be better to divide that section in half, i.e., only having to cover half the distance each day. Every step hurt so much, and I didn't want to put myself in the position of not feeling well enough to continue for the day while I was nowhere near lodging. Because I was alone, I wanted to be extra cautious. For me, this turned out great, and I'm so glad that I modified my plan. I finished in the normal 8 days, but I hiked much slower because I hiked shorter distances for all 8 days instead of longer distances for 6 days 😀
Hm, I just checked the website for the airline that I used, i.e., Yeti Airlines, and I see that different categories of tickets have different luggage allowances. My ticket allowed for only 10kg of checked luggage with no carry-on luggage. I don't remember if others on the flight had carry-on luggage, but the plane was so small, I'm not sure where it would go 😀
You are so sweet! Thank you so much, in advance, for sharing my videos 🎉 I can't wait to hear how your trip prep is progressing! Mandi
Thank you for visiting our country Nepal ❤🇳🇵
Hi, UJJWAL! Aw, thank you for sharing your country with me! I hope you see you again this coming Thursday for Part 2 of this video 🥳
Just re-watched this one. Anyone who has crossed that bridge will never forget the experience. The climb to Namche was savage and I handicapped myself before the ascent, walking in on a wake for the legendary climber Babu Chiri. I'd been with his family in Traksindo the night he died, but news took a few days to come down the trail from Everest. Some Sherpas were toasting his passing with chang. Five or six toasts later I said I had to be going and they all laughed like crazy. Felt like a god for about an hour, the second hour wasn't great, and by Namche I wanted to die. I totally get the tears. There were days I lost it to the exhaustion, or to the beauty of what was I was seeing. Cried like a child on Kala Pathar, looking up at Everest. That trek is a quest and a pilgrimage rolled into one.
Hi, David! How are you today? Aw, I'm so honored! I get a "watched" and then a "re-watched" from you! That totally makes my day! Right! That bridge was unforgettable haha. Oh, my gosh - yes! I'm so glad that I broke the Namche trek down into 2 days; anyone that does it in one day is a true rock star! I've never heard of Babu Chiri or chang, so that's for mentioning this; I'll definitely look this up 😃 Oh, yes! If you did the trek without crying, then you didn't do the trek the right way :). Thank you for sharing all of that! I look forward to saying hi again soon.
David, oh my gosh! I just watched a short documentary on Babu Chiri. How heartbreaking! I can't believe all of the things that he accomplished, most notably that he build the first-ever school in his hometown. That has totally inspired me, and now I want to build a school 💗 It makes me cry when I hear of children that don't have schools 😟 And, the king at the time sent a message to his family after Babu's body was found. That's overwhelmingly special. And, while he was still alive, he was declared a national hero of Nepal! I'm in awe! Thank you so much for telling me about his, and that's even cooler now that you got to witness a part of that history. Thank you! I hope one day that a king or queen will declare me a national hero haha 💕
@@GoMandiMartin A truly remarkable man. His wife was a lovely lady and cooked a magnificent Sherpa stew the night I stayed there. His house in Traksindo was covered in photos of him on various peaks, including Everest, and letters from foreign governments thanking him for getting their climbers up the hill. His death was a huge deal in Nepal. The assassination of the Royal Family happened a month or so later, and that was some magnitudes worse. It was a ghastly thing to witness the effect on people. The two months I was there went to extremes of joy and tragedy. I kept a very detailed diary for the year I spent travelling, so these details remain very fresh.
Go for it with the school. I built two in Cambodia. My family and friends funded them for ten years before we handed them over to the local people to run. I guess we gave over 1000 countryside children a start in learning English that they couldn't otherwise afford. There's a movie on UA-cam somewhere about a project I worked on with a French friend I met in Cambodia. I'll try to send you the link. Another movie I'd recommend is 'Until They Are Gone.' Pretty sure it's still on UA-cam. It's a tough watch because it deals with landmine clearance. Bill and Jill Morse, the 'stars' of the documentary - they'd hate being called that - are good friends of mine and the nearest I've come to meeting living saints. Proof positive there are some genuinely good people in this world. Best wishes from England. David
@@davidcoleman757 Wow, David! What incredible stories! You've just blown me away! I can't believe that you've opened schools! Did you get anything that in your journey on video? Do you have any plans of publishing your journal? Have you gone back to visit any of the schools? That's so sad about the funeral and the royal family, but gosh, to be able so say that you were there! Thank you so much for sharing all of that! I just searched here on UA-cam for "Until It's Gone," but all I found was the trailer at: ua-cam.com/video/eCBfw_O44gc/v-deo.html
If you find the film, I would love to see it! Thank you for being such a wonderful part of my channel, David from England.
I love this story so much!! ❤️

beautiful video..was it easy to get a flight to lukla during ur trek in May? the weather seems pretty good as well
Hi, and thank you so much for such your kind message. What a neat profile picture you have! I actually booked my flight to/from Lukla at the beginning of January for my May travel, and it was easy at that time. The weather, thankfully, was really nice, and the flight was a breeze ✨ I hope to see you here again very soon 😊
Its Fun Traveling with a partner or friend ..Alone .It feels lonely 😢🤞
😀 Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I think it's so fun when it's just me and my camera. My camera is a fantastic friend haha 🎥But, I can see the value in traveling with someone whose company you enjoy so that you get to bond and keep each other company. Isn't it great that there are so many different ways and options and methods to enjoy nature? 😀
When I go, I'm going to carry puppy jerky for the fur babies! I love animals more than I do most people. Ha ha!
I am dying of laughter! I love that! How brilliant, Jenna! I love animals an insane amount, too! If you take puppy jerky, I can't wait to see the reaction. Oh my gosh, Jenna! That reminds me of an upcoming video that in the que for editing - but I took a few bananas to a monkey temple, and the monkeys went crazy and started swarming and it was nuts!
@GoMandiMartin 🤣🤣 that happened to me at Pikes Peak with the marmots! They were trying to climb into my car!! Babies and all! I didn't know what I had gotten myself in to! 🤣🤣
@@jennawren1672 Hhahhahhahahaaaa! That's awesome! Oh my gosh, yes! The marmots! I've lived in MD for just over 2 years, and I kept seeing this odd creature sneak past my patio window: it almost looked like a mix between a cat and a beaver. Turns out, it's marmots! MD has some of the weirdest things haha. Oh my gosh! I can just imagine those things climbing into your car! That would freak me out haha. Thank goodness that people don't act like animals with food (mostly) 🙈 Was Pike's Peak as gorgeous as it is in the photos?
Yes!! Pictures don't do it justice! It's definitely worth trekking! Highly recommend it!
@@jennawren1672 I will keep that mind mind. I do love places where photos don't do them justice haha 💗 How are you today, Ms. Jenna? I hope that everyone is well 🌞
Great video! Does the April 1 law for mandatory guudes doesnt apply to EBC? We are a group of 4 people only planning to do with porters. Please advise.
Hi, Gaurav! Thank you so much for taking the time to write and to share about your upcoming plans to trek. I'm so excited for you and your small group. I'm getting ready to release a whole video explaining how to legally trek solo, but (as least as of the middle of May) the quick answer is that you can buy a Trek Card that authorizes you to trek solo. I just went back and added timestamps into this video, and you can see the location where you purchase the card and what the card looks like at the timestamp titled, "Trek Card" at 5:25 😊 I hope this helps. I would suggest double checking the laws before you go just to be sure nothing changes. There's sadly a lot of misinformation circulating.
Nice

very nice video.........I think you went too fast. You need to go slow and acclimatize. Hike high sleep low.........stay a more than 1 day at certain elevations to acclimatize. I will be going in November for this trek and adding Island peak summit. This was a good view from home. Im more excited to go now.
Hi, Martin. It's so nice to hear from you; thank you so much for your message. Yeah, the altitude was a tricky challenge. Some people stay 2 days at different points; I split my hikes in half so that I was going up twice as slow as everyone else. I just didn't take any rest days. That you for sharing your thoughts. That's so awesome to hear that you are going in December, and thank you so much for watching 🤩🤩
