Jiu-Jitsu Techniques | Submissions from BAD Positions

  • Here are a few unique opportunities that arise occasionally, which actually make submissions available from inferior positions. It is obviously better to gain the superior position, control and take the submission safely from there...however, sometimes the element of surprise from a bottom submission can take someone off guard.

    That inverted triangle was one of the first submissions I landed, crucifix and everything! Love using the crucifix because it can set up triangles, armlocks, chokes or it can just be a diversion maneuver. After all, no one likes having only one arm to attack. I hope I can remember some of these moves next time I'm in side control. Awesome video!

    I love that inverted triangle. Thank you for the details. Those are what I was missing to pull it consistently. I’m a smaller guy and this thing has been my savior in the gi. What I’ll often turn it into is a Peruvian necktie to omoplata, straight armlock, or a gi-assisted go-go plata. OSS!

    This video gave me a chance to do more on the mats in positions I normally put myself in. Got any tips for a aggressive opponent who is stronger and is always catching you in a standing guillotine and then pulling guard and just sinking it in.

    • @KnightJiuJitsu
      @KnightJiuJitsu  5 років тому

      I don’t mean to be too abstract, but posture is the answer. It’s why wrestlers are so hard to catch in guillotines (good wrestlers). Getting your hips under your shoulders when necessary is very important.

    Awesome! I'm a lighter (130 lbs) beginner (7 months) always end up on bottom. I've been working on escapes and guard control, but being tossed around I like getting submissions from bad positions because I'm always in them.
    I do try to practice escapes and better top control and sweeps, but when rolling with higher belts who weigh 50 lbs more than you, it's tough as a beginner. I like the idea of being very tricky.

      And possibly a little knife defense at that. Gotta be prepared. What I love about jiu jutsu was that after I mastered some moves, I was able to defend myself from bigger guys in class who like to disturb and annoy very small guys like me especially with pushes. I always hold back though. Dont want to hurt anyone.

      Try to find a good partner that wants to work on the side on this bottom game & choose a few of the subs isolate them by having them resist enough to develop with a measured resistance, only not so much they shut you down.
      As you improve, gradually up the resistance. You'll develop timing that way with less stress then build in more stress as your timing improves.
      Example say there's 4 of these techniques. Isolte 2 in 2 separate drills with that concept, then at some stage insole any of all 4 based on the ques he gives deliberatly as your coach on top.
      Then do light to medium rolls with the idea of any time that position shows up allow your partner to work for one & pull one out. Then Go back into flowing.
      Then go harder sometimes put yourself there in hard rolls to see if you've improved your timing or at least set ups.
      Aliveness drill concept.
      Great partners used to be hard to find. Now a days it seems people really are more open minded on the sharing & helping eachother grow. Take advantage of that.
      Hope this makes sense. Have a good day.
