TBH I like it, different takes on the same topic. Wendigoon, Bedtime Stories, Detective Ridiculous, Nexpo, Missing Engima and now Lore Lodge have covered this case and it's great!
Why was my response deleted? I accused no one of plagiarism or that even the video was. I was merely explaining the why as to peoples negative response: they are midwits who dont know what plagiarism is and isn't and think anyone doing something already done is plagiarism. If this gets deleted too I may just unsubscribe.
I've never been happy with an explanation for the cabin circumstances until now!! Gary setting up jack and ted to survive and then going off for helps 100% makes the most sense and is corroborated by the can opener detail that one can was opened by a military opener and all the rest a standard one, lining up with Gary staying for a meal and before leaving them behind!!
Yes! I've watched dozens of people cover this, but I've never felt comfortable with the cabin bit until this video. They did a great job piecing that together!
Missing enigma did a good job with the cabin part as well. I honestly believe that Gary was not involved as many people want to believe mostly cause why would he and the fact that he wasn’t arrested for misdemeanour or wasn’t found prior after the fact showed that he probably died in the woods.
@@victory8928 I agree, Gary Mathias died of exposure like the others, and it's not at all surprising his remains weren't found in that wild environment. It's very sad that conspiracy theorists have cruelly trashed his reputation, based on his schizophrenia. The poor guy was victim of a tragic set of circumstances that ended his life brutally. I believe from the evidence Gary ended up in that survival trailer with a frostbitten and very sick Ted Weiher, and did his very best to take care of him. This must have been particularly horrendous for Gary, as withdrawal from his schizophrenia meds kicked in. Gary Mathias has living relatives who sometimes view and comment on 'Yuba Five' videos. They are deeply hurt at speculation that their beloved relative murdered his friends. I wish people would think about the effect their unproven accusations could have - these young men are deceased but they were real people, and they have living relatives and friends who mourn them to this day. Branding their lost loved one a serial killer - based on zero evidence - is shabby and ridiculous.
Wait only one can was opened that way? I always thought it was all of them that needed the military opener. That was one of my only issues with LL’s explanation but if you’re right then his theory makes total sense.
@@glamdolly30100000%. Yuba city native and resident here. Good to see a comment like yours. I hope if any family read this - please know the community does NOT EXIST online. That ain't the "view" or standard opinion on the mystery. But it is sad schizophrenia automatically makes people repeat it as if he “caused” in one way or another
As a case manager for individuals with disabilities (including some co-morbidities such as mental illness and intellectual disabilities), I just want to point out that many people with disabilities have a very rigid set of black and white rules. My thought on the trailer and all the resources they didn’t use is that the boys that made it there were aware that the food was Not Theirs (along with everything else there), and worried that someone would be upset with them eating the food or otherwise using the other resources there. They (most likely Gary) may have been able to rationalize that this is an Emergency and they need to use some of the resources in and including the trailer, but couldn’t get over the fear/guilt/shame/etc of taking Someone Else’s Belongings for themselves.
I'm surprised people expect someone with schizophrenia (even medicated) or intellectual disability to have the same thoughts and act in the same perfectly "rational" way as they would. I'm no expert on mental illness or mental disability so I just figure I can't work out what they were thinking but it's probably different than what I would think.
Kind of agree, but not sure they would freeze or starve just to avoid someone potentially being mad at them or not breaking the rules. My wild guess is that they decided to sleep in the car with the engine running in the snow…,and got carbon monoxide poisoning. My dad had this happen while sitting in a car with a girl on a date, and when he got out,,,,he noted he could barely walk. And people who have survived carbon monoxide poisoning may have short term memory impairment, where they can’t remember what happened 10 minutes prior. That degree of impairment may have made it hard to use the food and heater.
I only have autism, not any intellectual disabilities, but I can fully understand that kinda thinking I experience something kinda similar, where if there’s no food that I like (or at least tolerate), whether it’s because of texture, taste, etc, I simply will not eat until there IS food I’ll eat, so I can fully see that kind of “if it’s not mine it’s bad to use it, someone will be mad at me” mixed with “food I don’t tolerate is the same as no food” causing someone to just not eat freely accessible food to the point of starvation
@@truebornseeker9767 same here. There have been times where my parents said if this one food wasn’t available I wouldnt eat ANYTHING, probably to starvation
Having some kind of medical problem, and suddenly headlights pull up behind me, people whistling, seeing 5-6 people outside, and when i ask for help, the lights go out and they go silent? That sounds like an absolute nightmare scenario right there. Hills have eyes kinda shit.
And nobody actually went and looked in his car?? They're on a lonely mountain and they come across another car and actually pull up behind it and yet nobody goes and looks in the car. Unbelievable
Schoen also changed his story a few times (2 or 3), at least based on different versions of this story I've heard over the years. And seeing between 2 and 12 people? He wasn't crazy or cripplingly stupid, so he was either being deceptive or he was mentally compromised. He also reportedly did and said some strange things in the wake of that night. I'm not saying anything definitive, just saying he might have also been someone _else's_ bad night.
@@MrBrachiatingApeI agree. Besides watching Aiden's video now, I've watched Wendigoon's one and also read some articles in a couple sites and posts, and can't shake the feeling that this man is much more involved in what happened to the guys than he let on. Not sure how - maybe intentionally scaring the boys, maybe chasing them up the mountain, maybe getting angry and inadvertently making the boys afraid, idk. But he is, in a way, the only real witness and told multiple versions of that night. That's probably not a coincidence.
Mentally handicapped, cheering for the away team at a college sports game... seems like an unfortunately believable target for retaliation. I'm curious if the investigation ever extended back to interviewing people who attended the game to see if they had any verbal altercations with other fans or anything of that nature.
As a resident of Chico, California, I was pretty stoked to see you were going to do the Yuba 5 because: Lore Lodge + Subject = history of the area. Actually, Yuba County is Maidu and Chico is Mechoopda, but it was very cool to see a local indian tribe done here in the Lore Lodge. Thank you.
I didnt realize they were in the area between Brownsville and Forbestown. It now makes a lot more sense that they got stuck, tried to walk, and got lost. The short distance between places in that area are very decieving because it is very hilly with thick woods and limited landmarks or signs to orient yourself. If you dont already know where the roads and turns are to get to your destination, you will get lost. The map makes it look like there is a big main road from town to town, but it is more like tons of little unmarked country roads and the map is just highlighting which little road will go to the next town. I have been lost there going from Dobbins to Forbestown to see my family.
This is the most simple and logical explanation. They thought follow the road and never realized it was a fatal mistake. Too bad Schons was a very unreliable witness to say the least. I dont think Schons had any prominent role in there going up into the middle of nowhere .
I really like when you give the little history lesson of where the story takes place. The transition from discussing natives into the story was so smooth. Mad props my guy.
While people outside of the US skip straight thru to the next chapter. Not my country so don't care whose lands who, only interested in the case that's been covered five million times by every single person on social media but it's still a story I've always found fascinating
Waste of time and boring as hell. If I want a history video I'll find one and not go to a missing persons video for it. It's like going to McDonald's for sea food.
It's still haunting to me to think about what led them out of the car and to their eventual demise separated from each other. I mean the fact that we only have 4 of the 5 bodies in itself is terrifying.
I was a cadet for a couple years and we did field training exercises every year, sometimes twice a year. My worst MRE was the Chicken chowder. The worst one I’ve ever tried was the Vegetarian one. The story behind my experience with the vegetarian MRE was that I got to speaking to a fellow cadet who was a vegetarian and I asked how the vegetarian MRE tasted. Their response was, “It’s so bad, I wish I never told anyone I was a vegan.” Of course I couldn’t believe anything was that bad and they offered for me to try it myself. The cadet was right.
@@dawn8542 I’m aware, I’m just quoting what they said at that time. They were a vegetarian but the forms at the time did not have a vegetarian box, only a vegan one. Cadets was a strange place
I really love that you include a short history of the locations you speak about. It means a lot and needs to be remembered. Coming from a partly indigenous family myself, it's really wonderful to see the history coming back. You do an honor every time you include that, please don't stop! Thanks for another great episode guys and Many Blessings!
I found Missing Enigma some time ago and he deserves way more love. He does amazing work and I'm glad you guys mesh so well and I love seeing you guys in this same kind of realm of video types supporting each other.
The sort of people that gather to the videos made by a creator can scare away new ones. There are too many people that publicly show they are mindless dum dums, so some people will just avoid him
I couldn't care any less about the number of other creators that have covered the same topics. Aiden breaking down the Mrballen stories is what brought me here.
Can i just say, the framing, lighting, camera work etc on the chair ad exhibition is legitimately more well done than actually any 'lproduct being used as intended' ad I've ever seen?
I JUST finished a full length documentary script for this. I have my theories, and Gary is not at the top of my list. I think he did what he could under the circumstances. Poor guy
I agree. At most he may have had some negative interaction with someone at the game, store, or with Shone. The last most likely in my opinion. But that could be said for any of them. No evidence but I feel like they did run into an inebriated Shone somewhere leading to Madruga was wounded at the car. Then panic north. Shone reacted to the events with a heart attack then becoming ill. A lot of the how of it all depends what state Shone was in that night.
@SoLDMG I started with Gateway's and the boys histories, because I think the climate towards the handicapped at the time might have played a role. Ran through the case and then I rounded off with theories. I covered everything from UFOs, hate crimes, Gary's schizophrenia....all of it. So pretty standard
@@fiffihoneyblossom5891how interesting! A big problem I face with the chasing theory is how 5 men, 2 with military training get driven up a mountain by car jackets. Goodluck with the doc.
The only thing I've heard that you didn't mention and that may support Gary having stayed behind in the trailer for some time was that there was a book or magazine in the trailer in which affirmations were written, supposedly by Gary. This would indicate that he was in the trailer long enough for his meds to begin wearing off and he was doing his best to maintain stability in order to care for his friend. I wonder if perhaps the two found together also made it to the trailer and were the first to set out, leaving Gary (the most capable) to care for the fourth. The one found alone I suspect succumbed to hypothermia on the way up the mountain. All conjecture of course but this is the scenario that seems most likely to me. Great breakdown, though.
Old comment, but just to weigh in: These affirmations are almost certainly a fabrication of "journalism". The police never mentioned finding anything like this at the trailer, and any evidence lists which have gone public do not include anything resembling hand-written affirmations. And as an investigator, that would be something I most definitely would have bagged as evidence. The only place you'll run across this story is in either articles of the time or as rumors from Yuba County residents. But never as official evidence.
@rgbcgroup thanks for the info. As I stated, I've heard it but note that I didn't state the existence of those writings as fact. I'm neither a journalist nor an investigator, merely a person with a curious mind and a head full of mostly useless information picked up along the way.
Missing Enigma's videos (a two part release) on this subject are rather good. Probably some of the better ones I have seen, will check this wendigoon one as well.
Agreed, to be honest I didn't watch either ME or Wendi's until after we made this so I wouldn't be influenced, but I think Nick did an utterly flawless job with the research.
Nigma’s is probably one of the first I watched on this case and it’s absolutely solid. One of the first few I watched for Missing Enigma’s channel I watched tbh. Absolutely solid videos.
@@CreativaArtly Now I'm REALLY gonna go scare up Wendigoon's vid on this subject. I rewatched ME's Yuba Cty 5 series right before this kicked off, would like to see another perspective.
I've seen other people immediately blame Gary because of his mental health, but I've always thought it was very unlikely that he intentionally hurt his friends. I think it's highly possible that the red pickup truck was real, forced them up the mountain (albeit slowly), they got stuck behind the other guy's car, and then the boys ran. The car being unlocked with the window rolled down seems to suggest this. Maybe the pickup truck even just abandoned them right there once they saw that the other car was stuck and blocking the way. Whoever was driving the pickup might have thought "it's not worth the risk" and simply left. The boys would have probably thought they were still being chased. Gary would have helped them until his lack of medicine began to take a toll, at which point he may have gone for help or tried to get away out of fear of hurting his friends. I think the amount of provisions left behind suggests he went for help. As for the guy having a heart attack, the first time I heard the story my immediate thought was that he must have been doing something illegal that he didn't want to get in trouble for, so he said he had a heart attack. All the throwing up and defecating he claimed to experience could have been from alcohol or drugs. Maybe he had a secret stash on the mountain that he wanted to hide before his family got there. Could have been anything. Either way, he was probably extremely out of it or unwilling to help the boys because he didn't want to get caught doing whatever he was doing. Might have even pretended to be asleep when the flashlight was shined in his car. As for his very ominous quote, maybe that was referring to whatever he was doing on the mountain. I really doubt he was saying he killed the boys or anything like that. He could have literally meant "I wish I'd walked back down the mountain a long time ago" instead of freezing in his car for hours. So who was driving the pickup and why did they chase the boys? Someone else in the comments suggested that the boys were followed from the game they had just been at. I think that's a possibility. Maybe they had angered someone there, or maybe someone didn't want them to participate in their upcoming basketball game. Since Gary was part of the Gateway Project, despite not actually being intellectually disabled, it seems like anyone with any mental issues could have been included. Potentially very dangerous ones that may or may not have been being treated.
I think your theory is the one that fits the best. They might have taken the wrong route once they realised the red pick-up was following to try and loose them? The slow trip up the mountains could have been a combination of refusing to stop for the red pickup truck and concern for the car. Too fast for the driver to walk up to them, but too slow to loose them. The guys ran when they got the chance and the road was blocked by the stuck car. Two perished from exposure running away (from either trying to return to the car/getting seperated from the others) The cabin situation plays out as explained in the video, with the final guy's medication running out and the (likely valid) paranoia/memory of the red pick up truck driver leading him to either perish deep in the woods or make it back to civilisation with no intention of ever revealing who he was. As for the gold watch in the cabin none of them supposedly owned? Might have been either stolen or taken by accident and that led the pick up to follow them, if the dispute wasn't about the basketball game
Schizophrenia, in its worst cases, causes one to completely lose their grip on reality. It doesn't matter how much Gary cared for the boys. In fact if he had a break and was convinced that streetlights were evil cameras they needed to avoid them he would have believed he was helping them by convincing them to go into the woods. It's a simple explanation that covers all the details without foul play or anything supernatural being involved.
This is precisely how I saw it, this video cleared up a whole bunch of things and I came to the same conclusions. They just went for help where there unfortunately wasn't any and were too frostbitten to return, they made that journey with very little clothing. What he didn't mention in the video is that their workshop (and even main office) had been firebombed multiple times, they moved and immediately got threats and then the director of Gateway was found by the fire department burning just inside of his apartment because someone knocked, threw gasoline on him and lit him up. Some evil murderer WAS legitimately after them.
True but from personal experience of knowing someone with a bad ticker, he stubborn and has had minor heart attacks and he just roll with till his health is to bad and he has to go to the hospital. He had 1 attack at his car at a DG and basicly face planted, then got up and sat in his car. So a heart attack is possible. Most people think of them and think instant death.
As a perfectly functional 20ish adult, I was coming home one dark, rainy night from a family members home. It was a 20 min trip, and I'd done it many times. I totally spaced, and missed a turn, so I took the next one incorrectly remembering that it would join up to the road I wanted. An hour later I was still driving down random narrowing streets which rapidly became unpaved, having no idea where I was, being pelted by branches coming out of the trees from the strong winds, and panicking because I could not find any turn around spots. Eventually, I just stopped in the middle of the road and grabbed my old school Tom Tom to tell me how to get home. Had a cell phone but never thought to use it (prob wouldn't have been helpful because I had no idea where I was, so neither would anyone I called). It can happen. Who knows how I would have gotten home if I didn't have a GPS. I probably would have had to wait until morning and some light to figure it out where I was.
Thanks for sharing your experience. You're so right. I've attempted to get around road construction during the day and instead got hopelessly lost on the country roads of Georgia while picking up my kids from preschool. Thankfully, it was sunny and I had GPS, which led me back to the road I was trying to avoid. I ended up wasting half an hour of my time in an attempt to avoid an inconvenience, and it's entirely conceivable that they mistook their route and got lost.
I can’t be the only one that feels like letting 4 men that can’t count to potato go on a late night road trip with a paranoid schizophrenic driver is a terrible idea. Who authorized this excursion?
1. Matthias was fully medicated at that point and hadn’t had a schizophrenic episode in years 2. Madruga was the driver not Matthias. Automatically assuming that he killed his friends because he had a mental disability is shitty.
@@Rosa-kd2clno one automatically assumed anything, unless you're replying to someone that has since deleted their post. Anyone that was there would be a suspect in some capacity.
I first heard about this story via Bedtime Stories. Their vid is well narrated but is somewhat short. Missing Engima's two parter is probably the most in-depth and comprehensive look at this incident available anywhere. I will admit though, Lore Lodge did an excellent job with this video.
The only thing I think you could be overlooking is that you assume being chased by car means they were going fast. They could have been slowly followed and after finally being caught between their pursuers and the other guys car, just out and made a run for it.
Respect to you for giving due credit to The Missing Enigma's 2-part special on the Yuba Five mystery. It is without question the most comprehensively researched, insightful and in-depth video on the case to be found on UA-cam. It should be the starting point for anyone wanting all the known facts - and just as important, the unproven theories.
Can you and Wendigoon do a podcast episode, or similar, discussing your respective differences in conclusions and why different elements (evidence, sources, claims) were prioritized over others? I think that discourse could be great!
I'm not sure this has been talked about in the comments already but there was some information that popped up recently that is super interesting. Instead of going into, i'll just post it directly from a reddit post that is talking about a mopac audio podcast. I've listened to the podcast, they discussed it a little bit. I have never seen a picture of the memo tho. After reading about it.. the implication is that the police have details that they have not released. If I remember correctly, mopac audio interviewed family members. Some of yuba county five's parents are still alive. Quote below: At the end of the podcast Yuba County Five, by Mopac Audio, she reveals that their team was one of the first to get a full digitalized copy of the case from the police. As they were going through it, they found an internalized memo from the Sherriff from October 8, 2020 that said “Gary Matthias is believed to be a victim of foul play. This case remains open as a missing person/homicide case. It is in the best interest of all involved that this letter not be forwarded to the Matthias family.”
This story is a really hard one for me, my son is autistic and I just can’t even imagine how these boys parents must have felt 😢 sad they never had any resolution
I'm autistic and sometimes I need to shut the video off and watch something else with these cases :( its cruel to see the mistreatment in these missing persons cases
Started watching Missing Enigma on your recommendation a while back and wow you and him are my favorite two creators for this topic of content. Both very thorough and both take a lot of pride in your work. Love that you aren’t afraid to give credit to other creators 👏🏼
I kinda miss when part of the history section was folklore. I know you guys have moved away from the kind of conspiracy side of things to an extent, but I really enjoyed learning about native legends nonetheless. Hope y'all start that up again :)
This case has fascinated me since I first heard about it. I believe it might have been the first Missing Enigma I ever saw, and I immediately thought "I hope Aidan and Wendigoon cover this eventually." Now you both have, so the trifecta is complete. This is one case I definitely wish I could live to see solved but at this point unless Gary Mathias is somehow alive and willing/able to come forward, we'll never truly know why it went the way it did. I don't know what sort of afterlife there is, if any, but if there is any I hope the families are all reunited and any surviving family members are at peace.
This story, along with The Boys on the Track and The West Memphis Three, are the ones I can never hear enough! I'm so glad you're adding your 6 cents (you put in WAYYYY more than 2 cents) to the record, Aidan! Wendi's version is also amazing. I'm a firm believer that everyone puts their own stamp on a story, and there's plenty of room on the interwebs for everyone. I mean, in all the versions of this story that I've heard, I've never gotten an Aidan Mattis history lesson along with it!
I think the 'heart attack' guy had a lot more to do with this incident than people realise. It is pretty clear that the various later 'sightings' of these young men in the area were completely erroneous. They were up that mountain and would have been much better off staying with their car. But clearly something really frightened them, and made them run further up the mountain. I suspect 'heart attack' guy for causing this, his testimony constantly changed. Did he pull a gun on them? They left a window down - they ran away.
Mad respect for giving The Missing Enigma channel the huge shout outs. I agree that its definitely an underrated channel and it would also be cool if you two did a collaborative video.
I’m actually covering this case and its theories for my high school forensics class right now. What drew me to cover this case is to disprove to the best of my ability the common stance that Mathias was a perpetrator, not a victim. I’d appreciate if you’d be willing to share any sources or what you did to discover any contemporary reporting. I am especially looking for information about after the boys got onto the mountain. The details you found regarding Madruga’s keys, the sea rations, Schons’ time in the lodge and many other smaller details would be great to have contemporary sources for. I think that you made a great case using all of the evidence you’ve found for all the boys but primarily Mathias and his likely innocence. I’d appreciate any sources you can point me towards as I want to portray this case as thoroughly as you did.
C-rations, and if you're doing it for school, I'd humbly like to suggest you have a look at my comment. I've probably forgot parts to address, but I tried to cover all the theories. My personal hunch, summarized, is that they were in the mountains because of the ex of Gary's sister. He had it out for her family. They found bullet casings in the car, while none of the boys had a gun. I think the five of them died from natural causes, but at different times, except for the two that initially went back for the car. There's a lot more detail in the other comment. Please let us know your finished work? I'd be genuinely interested to read it :)
I'm from Paradise, Ca, in Butte County and have followed the Yuba County Five pretty much since they went missing. I've watched every segment about them whenever I come across one, and I appreciate the way you talked about the history of the area and the research you did to tell their story together and individually. Many people tell this story the same generic way and I quickly lose interest, you kept my attention by the way you told it, very good job. ✌🏼
I’ve lived in yuba city my whole life and I used to drive to Chico everyday for work.. it would be easy to accidentally get onto 70 on the way back if they were unfamiliar with the route and it was dark because at the 99/70 split 70 is the straight lane whilst 99 is a slight right to stay on. Great video
According to several comments on the Missing Enigma channel's videos on this incident, the road layout at a particular junction has changed since the time of the incident, and originally it was a straight run through on 99 and virtually impossible to go off by accident.
The driver was not unfamiliar. He had driven all over that area and all over California in general many times. The valley landscape (hwy 99) is also totally different-looking than the mountain roads into the Sierras. There’s no way they just mistook one route for the other.
Chiming in I grew up in Quincy California which is north of this area. The cabin where the boys were found is really out of the way. The Quincy-Oroville highway wasn't paved till the early 90's and is closed during the winter. If one was lost my assumption is that one would go up Highway 70 before reaching the Quincy-Oroville highway. Next do the Keddy murders.
@@kingelvis5502 I misspoke I should have said Bucks Lake Road they were found off of that. Bucks Lake Road would have been closed it isn't plowed during the winter. Plus you would have to know to turn on Bucks Lake Road once you get to Quincy the natural route is to continue east on to Hallelujah Junction at the California/Nevada State line. I'm saying they passed 70 (Feather River Canyon) which is the Quincy Orville highway and ended up further east on Bucks Lake Road. Wasn't one of the boys trying to see a friend?
Correction Quincy-Oroville Highway is route 70 going up through the Feather River Canyon. The boys were found off of Bucks Lake Road which also goes from Oroville to Quincy past Bucks Lake and the town of Meadow Valley. This road wasn't paved till the 90's and is still closed during the winter.
For the record, I enjoy your historical summaries. I can tell you and your team put a lot of work into them. It shows a level of interest and respect that I find refreshing. Please keep doing them.
I’ve been waiting for this video!!! Now I have Wendigoon’s, Nexpo’s, Missing Enigma’s, and Lore Lodge’s videos! I love comparing how each channel looks at the series of events and comes to their own conclusion on what happened. This just made my Monday!
Okay but the wink during the chair ad alone was enough to make me want to buy it lol the chair legit looks super comfy as an adhd madman who cannot sit right for anything
Love hearing your take on this case Aiden, always enjoyable to see your investigative process going over a topic as it brings a fresh perspective. In relation to the MRE question worst I've personally had has been chicken and tuna with rice, EU humanitarian MRE, if you'd like to try them I have a couple left and would be glad to send them to you alongside some other items.
Love ur stories n content, n it’s kinda sad these men disappeared n strange stuff happened, n I remember a story bout this in a yt channel called “Nexpo”, it was well written. Ps: Ur dog is gorgeous plus I use to have a dog like this when I was a toddler. Her name was “Kheelo”, she passed away in 2004.
I think you came the closest with the idea of being chased. Never doubt the lengths a (possibly drunk) bully will go to because of a perceived insult. Especially in the presence of a friend or two. The generations today don't understand what no cell phone, no gps, no help look like, when you're being tailgated because of 'X' insult on the road. Now imagine the panic that would have occured in the car if several differently-abiled members of the group saw flashing, swerving lights at eye level, and loud honking coming right behind them and they didn't understand why or what this person wanted. What's the most likely thing that would occur? I think this is the single most likely occurrence. (And anyone who thinks, "Well, certainly the motorists would have called the police, or have reported seeing someone on the highway acting like a complete ass to another car!" has clearly never driven in 1978 when the legal drinking age was 18 [CA upping the age to 21 later that year in the very tail-end of Dec] and a call to the police meant finding a familiar exit, knowing where the gas station was and getting out of your car to use a payphone.)
I agree. Young people today forget they didnt have cell phones in their pockets in 1970s. Plus when stuff is happening quickly, you are first trying to get to safety. Then call the cops.
Hi Aiden, I’m not believing Shone’s story for a minute. Whatever he should have done 2 years ago, it sounds like he did something wrong. Also, he just ordered a beer, not an ambulance for a heart attack. And, how did he get his stuck car off the mountain? If the boys believed that they were in danger, they would have tried to get away. I think they tried to stay together, but when 2 of them couldn’t go on, their instinct drove them on. Gary broke the window and they climbed in. They wouldn’t want to steal, so I can actually see them not using the supplies in the trailer. After a few days, Gary left, presumably to get help, but died in the snow. My heart goes out to the families of those guys. I’m sorry for the pain that not knowing what happened had to cause. I really wish the authorities had investigated Shone a little better. I’m convinced he had knowingly lied about the incident. ❤
Honestly I get really hype whenever my favorite channels cover similar or sometimes the same topics, because usually they use different styles of research and different sources, leading to more or different information + usually vastly different theories which is always entertaining. Plus I love that while Wendi usually focuses on the more tragic and human side of it, usually the lore lodge, missing enigma etc dwelve into the history of the surroundings, the locals, their beliefs and stories and such and it's always fun to learn
I was born and raised in Chico (in ‘01) so when I first heard about this case from Nexpo, the Missing Enigma, and Wendigoon I was super intrigued! I told my co-worker about the case and he watched Wendigoon’s video, only to find out that his grandfather was at the basketball game! I always love hearing you cover topics that hit so close to home, like Mount Shasta. You’ve literally taught me a lot of lore I didn’t even know about my own area! Also, as a student at Chico State I can confirm that everyone locally calls it Chico State, as did clayface in that one episode of Harley Quinn lol
that one story I have about getting lost in the woods does kinda fit this theme, but as far as I know I survived it. So glad that the history segment returned this week
Weir was wrapped in eight sheets because his last words were, “I’m cold.” Repeated or something alike. Hewett wrapped him in all he had as the best he understood to do when Weir became unresponsive and before he left. Thats what comes to mind as I listen to this take.
Your unique attention to detail is what makes an hour-plus segment always worthwhile, even if I've heard multiple other channels' takes on it. That was my thought the instant I saw this. And here we are, 20 minutes in, and I already know more about this incident than all the other coverage told me.
Errrr arrggg im so mad that now not only one but two of my favorite creators have a video on a truly crazy mystery. /S obviously, I'm glad to hear your take on the story. Another banger!
I am golden btw kind sir. The fact you checked on me when i had no family or friends made a huge difference. I apologize for what I said, Im not sure why I said that. For anyone reading, this dude is a good man and a great creator.
I love your history segments. I appreciate the work you put into creating a well written story. I would love to hear some history only stories. I can’t be the only one that does!
From one historian to another, I must say I really appreciate and enjoy your refreshingly innovative and brilliantly conceived multi-perspective, interdisciplinary approach to hIstorical surveying and analysis. Your impressive catalogue of knowledge draws from a widely diverse range of disciplines and epistemologies, thereby demonstrating a genuine passion and respect for the rich, dynamic and multi-textured nature of history - a rare and all too often absent quality in most standard contemporary (and traditional) readings of history. This, in addition to to your inviting, comfortable demeanor and seemingly effortless recounting of facts is partly what separates you from perhaps most other historians I've worked with or observed throughout my 40+ year career as an historian of Black Diasporic Studies and Antebellum Southern history. You seem to possess a remarkably sophisticated and advanced understanding and appreciation of history, and you will no doubt go on to achieve great heights and success in your chosen fields of study and research. I am so happy to have recently discovered your program and eagerly look forward to your next episode. 😊

You're always there for me 😂 I need to get ready for an art show tonight and was looking for something interesting to listen to and BOOM, there you were with new content. I thank you, cause I'm nervous and need to chill and this will help. 🥰
Here for the MRE opinions! My dad was a lowkey doomsday prepper and would order them online. I’d picked through a few of them on occasion. The Tang drink mix was positively inexcusably bad…but if the apocalypse ever comes I’m sure I’d be grateful for it.
I think one thing a lot of younger people don't consider is what its like to drive late at night when you are exhausted before smart phones and GPS. It was easy to get lost, lose track of time and not realize how far you were driving in one direction. Back in the late 90's I once drove down the wrong road at 4 AM for over an hour when it should have taken me 10 minutes to get to the road I needed.
Finally a new video to watch. Adrian I been loving the content man really have you do great work. But I was wondering if you would ever cover the Travis Walton incident?
Great video!! Missing Enigma's coverage of this case is amazing too. I've listened to it multiple times, and the way the story gets told always gives me goosebumps.
I live in Oroville and I'm very familiar with all of this area. I've been up Oro-Quincy Hwy end to end many times. From Chico to the location where the car was found, would take effort. There is no way you could get there by accident. It would involve many turns and going far off the intended path. Hwy 99 is absolutely a straight shot to Yuba City from Chico. From Hwy 99 to 149 to get to Oroville is very obvious. Then you'd have to take a specific path through Oroville to get to Oro-Quincy Hwy. Not to mention it would be impossible not to realize you are not headed to Yuba City. Regardless of whatever mental disability you have. There must have been a 3rd party's involvement
55:00 Worst MRE experience: I was a Public Health Technician in the USAF and one of my responsibilities was Food Safety & Sanitation inspection. In a deployed location, there were metal shipping containers full of MREs that had separate power supplies to keep them from becoming 1000 degrees in the desert sun. Well, one container lost power for months and apparently no one noticed. When found, the contents of the MREs were basically chunky, black sludge. Just imagine the smell. Thousands of government dollars wasted, but I guess that’s just another day lmao.
Love this channel!! Missing Enigma and Wendigoon did great videos on this and Lore Lodge has done it again 👍!! Another amazing video! Thank you for all the hard work you do to entertain the masses✊✊
I just loved everything about this video. Yes, it is well-researched on a deeply interesting subject of mystery; but, I enjoyed hearing you reference local place names and was ridiculously entertained by your parody of a manly man in a chair ad. Thank you!
6:46 The phrase _"pitched you a chair"_ definitely sounds like it would be some kind of old, obscure expression someone's grandfather would say, especially when it's followed immediately with _"gonna learn ya a thing'r two."_
I think about this case at least once a week. That's not an exaggeration. I was very excited to see a video on it from this channel. This was the perfect balance of objective analysis I was looking for against the (equally valid) more artistic and heartstring-pulling ones from Enigma and Nexpo. Thanks for helping to keep the Yuba County Five's memory alive and relevant today.
Extremely well done. Very informative and presented in a professional manner. Presenter has much knowledge of all subjects in each video. A very intelligent and handsome man.
I always love hearing Lore Lodge's take on a story I already know, and this episode did not disappoint. Can you guys do an episode on Maura Murray some day? That case would fit right in with the "police didn't feel like doing their job" theme you have going on 😂
All of these stories have been "discussed to death" and you could dismiss many of them as someone being drunk and accidentally dying. But here we are anyway, consuming content about their cases because obviously they aren't that straightforward. In Maura's case her body has never been found, and the more coverage it gets the better chance that her family may one day get closure. If Lore Lodge does an episode you can just skip it 🤷🏻♀️
While I like getting scared occasionally by watching your videos, I'd perfer it not to be by an otherwise normal ad because I've had to crank the volume up so high to hear you. I love you guys. Like I really LOVE you guys. I've watched litterally everything you have created (except for maybe a few streams). But can you *please* do something to keep the volume more consistent. Midwits don't know what plagiarism is and isn't, is the short answer as to the "why".

This is such a good point!
I only have autism, not any intellectual disabilities, but I can fully understand that kinda thinking
I experience something kinda similar, where if there’s no food that I like (or at least tolerate), whether it’s because of texture, taste, etc, I simply will not eat until there IS food I’ll eat, so I can fully see that kind of “if it’s not mine it’s bad to use it, someone will be mad at me” mixed with “food I don’t tolerate is the same as no food” causing someone to just not eat freely accessible food to the point of starvation
@@truebornseeker9767 same here. There have been times where my parents said if this one food wasn’t available I wouldnt eat ANYTHING, probably to starvation

Not sure how - maybe intentionally scaring the boys, maybe chasing them up the mountain, maybe getting angry and inadvertently making the boys afraid, idk. But he is, in a way, the only real witness and told multiple versions of that night. That's probably not a coincidence.

Wow I didn’t know this about the area. That definitely adds more nuance to the possibility of them getting lost.

This is the most simple and logical explanation. They thought follow the road and never realized it was a fatal mistake. Too bad Schons was a very unreliable witness to say the least. I dont think Schons had any prominent role in there going up into the middle of nowhere .

I JUST finished a full length documentary script for this. I have my theories, and Gary is not at the top of my list. I think he did what he could under the circumstances. Poor guy
Wow, so cool! How are you gonna go about this?
Good luck with your script!
That part I never came across. I could see Gary being there a couple of weeks, but not beyond that. His disorder would’ve been crippling.
Old comment, but just to weigh in:
These affirmations are almost certainly a fabrication of "journalism".

@@CreativaArtly Now I'm REALLY gonna go scare up Wendigoon's vid on this subject. I rewatched ME's Yuba Cty 5 series right before this kicked off, would like to see another perspective.
the missing enigma is a masterclass in research.
Two perished from exposure running away (from either trying to return to the car/getting seperated from the others)
The cabin situation plays out as explained in the video, with the final guy's medication running out and the (likely valid) paranoia/memory of the red pick up truck driver leading him to either perish deep in the woods or make it back to civilisation with no intention of ever revealing who he was.
I saw a quote from a family member of one of the boys that suggests Gary was being targeted by a bully, who would have wanted to harm Gary
So refreshing to find an actual person doing their channel and not text to speech!

My husbands in the Army and I asked him about the MRE. He said, hands down, the omelette is the worst one. 😂
The veggie omelette…. A brick shaped catastrophe 🤢
Omelet with ham was also…shudder
Can comfirm. Even the stray dogs in iraq wouldnt eat the vomlette
I burped that up silently and somebody about 20 ft away said "omg who shyt".
A very common option.
The only thing I think you could be overlooking is that you assume being chased by car means they were going fast. They could have been slowly followed and after finally being caught between their pursuers and the other guys car, just out and made a run for it.
Missing Enigma is awesome and one of the best channel in researching the facts. Been subscribed as long as it been around.
Big facts
Love that channel.
No we don’t need anymore right wing conspiracy theorists
@Black_Knight15 Wendigoon has done other collaborations with Lore Lodge.
@Black_Knight15they’re friends, I think they’re interested in doing more content together
They have an entire podcast together. Ya know, “Weird Bible”?
I'm not sure this has been talked about in the comments already but there was some information that popped up recently that is super interesting. Instead of going into, i'll just post it directly from a reddit post that is talking about a mopac audio podcast. I've listened to the podcast, they discussed it a little bit. I have never seen a picture of the memo tho. After reading about it.. the implication is that the police have details that they have not released. If I remember correctly, mopac audio interviewed family members. Some of yuba county five's parents are still alive.
Quote below:
At the end of the podcast Yuba County Five, by Mopac Audio, she reveals that their team was one of the first to get a full digitalized copy of the case from the police. As they were going through it, they found an internalized memo from the Sherriff from October 8, 2020 that said
“Gary Matthias is believed to be a victim of foul play.
Awesome video. Anyone else love the name "Madruga?"
He’s our guest on the podcast this weekend!
I mostly just used newspaper articles from the time, but if you really want the good stuff Missing Enigma has it
C-rations, and if you're doing it for school, I'd humbly like to suggest you have a look at my comment.
Tony Wright’s new book would be your best source.

I know it's a small thing but I like it when you include images of the landscape. As someone who never was in the US, it helps the setting a lot
Honestly, I live for the local history segments. The achorn thing is pretty neat.
What's your take for this case?
Watching multiple people tell the same story is a great way to retain information! Different styles resonate with different people.
There’s no way they just mistook one route for the other.
thanks for the shoutout to Missing Enigma. I like both your content, and TME does some really great work
He’s awesome! Total joy to have on the live show too
0:02 all your subs from wendigoon’s channel rainibg eyebrows looking sus for two whole seconds until the didclaimer😂 you really know your audience
SAME! Came here to say exactly this!!! And I second the Keddy Murders.
@@AprilShowers73 do you live in the area?
Thats what i was thinking. 99 south, 149 to 70, at 70 turn up 70, go through Quincy, turn towards Bucks Lake there, then get stuck.
I appreciate the respect you have when discussing their disabilities. Thank you.
As always, very well presented! Thank you!

Terrific storytelling. I live in Chico and this story has a lot tellers. Thank you for your research and perspective. ❤
Honestly I've been waiting for this for a long time this case needs to be talked about more
Hi Aiden, I’m not believing Shone’s story for a minute.
Missing Enigma’s coverage was awesome!! You guys did a great job too!!!
4 seconds in :paused: 👍 excellent intro.
Your intros always hit
that one story I have about getting lost in the woods does kinda fit this theme, but as far as I know I survived it.
I live like 30 mins away from Yuba County. This case freaks me out.
I’m just glad to know you’re still here
I love your history segments.
That is one hell of a compliment, thank you.
@@TheLoreLodgeseriously though I’ve always wondered how you look right at the camera lens and can shoot off so much info/names/locations/dates/EVERYTHING without a script! You're always there for me 😂 I need to get ready for an art show tonight and was looking for something interesting to listen to and BOOM, there you were with new content. I thank you, cause I'm nervous and need to chill and this will help. 🥰
You listen to this while the art show? Can I asked what show it is?
what also seems odd is who could be threatening enough to cause 5 grown men to flee, including 2 with military training?
Remember they had intellectual disabilities and had the mindset in some cases of teenagers.
Here for the MRE opinions! My dad was a lowkey doomsday prepper and would order them online. I’d picked through a few of them on occasion. The Tang drink mix was positively inexcusably bad…but if the apocalypse ever comes I’m sure I’d be grateful for it.
Unironically, it is better warm than cold or neutral.
I fall asleep shuffling your’s and wendigoon’s videos, so I honestly thought you’d already covered this
I think about this case at least once a week.
Once a week?
What explanation do you think fits best?
That doesn't sound healthy
Extremely well done. Very informative and presented in a professional manner. Presenter has much knowledge of all subjects in each video. A very intelligent and handsome man.
Wendigoon's video is one of my favorite videos. I'm VERY interested if there are any differences.
How sad you people support right wing lunatics
How sad
The disclaimer in the intro is so funny lol. Can’t wait to finish watching and hear your take on what happened
Yes! Let’s go! Please listen to Wendigoon more, Aidan!!! 😊😊😊.
I always love hearing Lore Lodge's take on a story I already know, and this episode did not disappoint. Can you guys do an episode on Maura Murray some day? That case would fit right in with the "police didn't feel like doing their job" theme you have going on 😂
No. Its been discussed to death. I dont know what is so fascinating about a drunk girl who got lost in the woods and died hiding from police
If Lore Lodge does an episode you can just skip it 🤷🏻♀️
MISSING ENIGMA is awesome! I actually watched his channel just before finding yours 😊
There can never be enough Yuba County 5 videos
While I like getting scared occasionally by watching your videos, I'd perfer it not to be by an otherwise normal ad because I've had to crank the volume up so high to hear you.
I love you guys. Like I really LOVE you guys. I've watched litterally everything you have created (except for maybe a few streams). But can you *please* do something to keep the volume more consistent. This one is exceptionally quiet!
