My brother and I had a friend Donnie who loved this song. I can remember him playing it in his sports car a Fiat car. RIP Donnie....we all sure had some fun times back in those days. Donnie was unique in that back in those days no African American man of color could own or drive such a sports car, but Donnie did...We use to watch as he sped up the winding road to our house....It was medium green convertible.........
I remember many years ago when I first heard this, It was on an 8 track cassette player in a car high up above the Town where I lived at night seeing the street lights with my best friend his girlfriend and my girlfriend, We had been smoking something herbal and he put this on, It was such a magical time we stopped talking and just listened with the lights of the town stretched out in front of us, It was one of those times in your life when the situation was perfect that is rare and very memorable.
I always remember listening to this over aand over at a friends house, lying on Freds bed,in Garys arms after smoking exquisite hash (which you would never find today) and just the sensation of the hash and the guitar intertwining........1972 was a very good year; and I still am in touch withthe gren eyed Gary, all these years later!

I'm SO glad you did the original version and NOT the live. I think besides myself, there's a guy in Peoria, Ill, and some guy in Sweden, and we are probably the only ones who almost always prefer the studio versions over live. If I was going to introduce someone like yourself to "new old" music, I would NEVER go for a live version first. That's fine for later, after you've heard some of the choicest tunes from the original albums of a certain artist, and you're a bit seasoned to their music. This is not to diss anyone on here who thinks otherwise, if u prefer live, you have my blessings! Thanks for doing this great song, pretty lady!
One of the best examples of what JP calls " whisper to the thunder"- a major reason why the guitar solo sounds so good- its because of the whispering that came before. the thunder.

Led zeppelin is by far one of the most talented bands I know of so play all you want, I don't think they have a single bad song, but "Dust in the wind" by Kansas is another great song that to me will never get old.
To be a rock and not to roll.... Watching your mind be blown is amazing. Thanks. Been listening to Zeppelin since well the songs came out. lol. My Dad LOVED Stairway...me too!
Led Zeppelin was the first group I saw in concert. My Sister Robin & I camped out over night in line to buy tickets in 1977 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. I remember renting the album "In through the out door" back then at a convenance store exchange program, it had a plain brown wrapping album cover. I bought a 1977 Concert t-shirt at Walmart years ago I still wear and remember my sister when I wear it, one of the good times.
One of the good things about days past, when you heard a song you really liked, such as Stairway to Heaven, on the radio, even though it was usually the short version, you would buy the album and be introduced to a world of music you loved that was NOT payed on the radio. One of my favorite memories connected with this song was when I was a young man, about 20, and working in an import shop. My manager let me play tapes instead of listening to Muzak all the time and one day I had Zeppelin playing. A man and his wife came in, he stopped at the register to ask if I was playing the music, or if it was piped in. Then we talked a bit. He was a Vietnam vet. He got drafted in 70, or 71. Before that he had only listened to country music. In Vietnam he was introduced to rock, and he admitted he felt one reason he loved it so much over there, when he really hated it at home, was the fact in Vietnam he started listneing to rock while under the influence of Thai stick. As the song was coming up to the guitar solo on Stair Way to Heaven his wife comes up to the register to pay out. The husband says, "Figures, the best guitar solo in rock, and she is ready to leave". She responded by saying, "Well, you listen, I'll go spend more money" and off she went.

We played this at my brother’s funeral, it was his favorite band. Every time I hear it, it brings me back to that day, not bad just real. Also, I realized who you look like?!?! Keke Palmer, yes girl! Soooo pretty!
This entire album was based on the Lord of the Rings which Jimi Page had finished reading. This song is about Galadriel the elven queen. One of my favorite songs. You should listen to Emerson Lake and Palmer - From the Beginning. Very Beautiful song too.
@@jppage3292 Both Page and Plant, in keeping with the times, were readers of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Plant has commented lightly on the possibility of lyrical allusions to LOTR in his music, and even gone so far as to say that he and Jimmy Page would "play music and write songs about the Lord of the Rings." He can even be quoted as saying "After reading Tolkien, I knew I had to move to the country," thus proving how deep an impact the trilogy made on him, as it has to many of us. In his lyrics, particularly those for "Ramble On" and "Battle of Evermore," Plant uses Tolkien-specific terms such as Gollum, Ringwraiths and Mordor. Led Zeppelin is such a treat to listen to. I fell in love with this band back in 1993-1994 when I was a teenager and I've never stopped since. Even with Stairway to Heaven. I've heard this song countless times and it still is awesome every time. You're in for a treat in listening to this awesome band :)
Even after all this time, even after hearing this song literally thousands of times, I still get chills when that solo kicks off.
You are spot on. For me it's the drums waiting and waiting then it hits you
You are not alone in this thought. That solo hits and you are like, "oh, this took a turn!"
true, it's the buildup to the solo and the anticipation that makes it great. Free Bird by lynnard Skinnerd is similar.
Amen on that one brother. It never fails.
