    I have used these sights for years but have also been an aerospace machinist for over 30 years. I thought I am not paying upwards of a thousand dollars for something I can make myself. So I kinda reverse engineered one of mine and made one. While MVA uses CNC equipment to make theirs I used conventional mill and lathe and didn't do half bad.I have actually made a few for friends. I don't sell them just give them to folks. My hat is off to these guys for top quality sights. I know how hard it is to manufacture them. You will enjoy yours as well. Treat them for the delicate instrument they are and they will last a lifetime...

    When I was young and old shooter told me something that stuck with me. He said that more damage is done to fine guns at the bench then in the field. A 50 piece gunsmithing screwdriver set will keep your screw slots looking new if you take the time to match the bit to the screwhead. If it doesn't matter to you that the slot is marred your heirs will appreciate that you took the time to match the screwdriver to the screw slot.

    I would like to see more detail of you laser line system and how it works and is set up. Those vices and your vice arrangement look interesting too. I have a rifle that needs shimming. The laser line was a new trick to me.

      This is the laser I used. It has a magnetic mount so I just put it on the door of my safe to get the shot looking down the barrel towards the rear sight. The side shot was from my bench top. Nothing too tricky about it, pretty easy to set up.

    Oak is a useful wood for making punches and small bars for drifting sights. They have more strength than plastic.

    I have the Godwin Gen II on my Chiapa Sharps. I bought that sight so I could run a patch without disturbing the sight. I just screwed that sucker down . Seems to be ok but I’m sure that laser thingy will show different. For right now I’ll add Kentucky windage if I have to.😄
    Thanks tons for your videos. They really help a first timer a bunch.

    I really recommend picking up the wheeler gun screw torque wrench. It’s a life saver as it’s amazing how little torque these screws should have compared to what a T handle can provide.

    As a machinist I use a machinist level to level sights and as well as scopes. With the octagon barrel you could roll the gun 90° and level off the flat on the barrel.

    • @RecoilTherapyChannel
      @RecoilTherapyChannel  Рік тому

      That would work. I’ve used carpenter levels in the past for this as well. Can also be done with a framing square if you’re careful.
      Don’t forget to set the rear sight staff so it leans forward just a couple degrees…makes it easier to see through when you’re cranked way up for shooting at longer ranges!

  • @dieselten01
    @dieselten01 2 роки тому +1

    You should level the rear staff with a spirt level on the side of it to tell you when the staff is straight up and down (no leaning to either side). The laser trick only checks it with the aperture at one setting.

    I have these on my rifles as well. You should check out the Wyoming sight drifter for non marring. Made for these rifles.

    Hi
    Interesting. The rifle is pre drilled and tapped for MVA base plate.
    I was going to have just a base plate fitted to start with. To try and keep the initial cost down.
    Shiloh were willing, their recommendation was to fit a sight staff to ensure it was lined up correctly. Now I know why.
    I ordered the same mid range sight, and the 113. The Hadley would be nice, but left it for down the road.
    I tend to just get a bigger hammer, probably just as well I got Shiloh to fit. It means I have to wait a bit longer. In the end I just wanted it was done right. So if I ain’t hitting on the centreline I know it’s me.
    A little surprised there is no marks for center for the front sight.

    How did those old buffalo hunters get their lasers to operate when they were out in the boonies? (Sorry man - I'm just being a wiseass). Thank you for the interesting video. Lot of careful and precise work there. I got a Hartford model back in '96 when we were on our way to Sturgis. Few years back got the MVA sights. Very enjoyable setup.

    You must have a really good paying job or investments that pay really good dividends, to,afford these guns, sights and all that equipment!! I make pretty good money, here, in Iraq, but am hard pressed just gathering what I think I’ll need for my first Quigley, next June. Not to mention, I will only have 30-40 days, at tops to,prepare….3/4 of that will be this November.

      @@jason60chev I’m a drywall foreman in Seattle lol… I’ve been involved in shooting for well over 20 years so I already had a lot of stuff when I made the jump to BP.
      Also, a lot of what you see in the older videos has been sold off and turned into new equipment, including the rifle and sights in this video. I’m definitely not rich enough to keep them all lol!!

      @@RecoilTherapyChannelI meant not to disparage. I like your videos and I do enjoy the challenge of long range shooting, though I’ve not done much of it. There is a range complex near Yuma, Az, where I trained, on a few occasions for these overseas jobs. There is a 1000 point. I’ve taken a Mosin/Nagant, my scoped 1903A1 sniper and an M1 Garand out there, to give it a try. I came close, with mostly iron sights, except for the ‘03A1 sniper. I set my camera onto my spotting scope to record. I am really looking forward to attending the Quigley, next year, even if all I have is my Trapdoor. A very nice barrel is currently available, which I hope I can get. Am sure is probably better than my current one. My gunsmith can replace. I’ve thought about installing a vernier sight to the Trapdoor….there is a front sight, similar to the one you installed available. It clamp mounts to the existing from sight base. I have seen different ways folks have mounted vernier sights to Trapdoors, but am wondering if maybe I should just use the Buffington already on the rifle, which has built in bullet drift on the slider. I could open up the aperture a little. Hell, I dont really expect to score any points, so maybe should spare the expense. I have 2-3 more years over here, so I probably won’t be able to really be involved. I have 300 new Starline 45-70 brass but am holding off buying bullets until I can get home to slug my barrel or have that good on installed. Also just bought 5 lbs of Goex powder. I only have 35 days or so, at home, to load all the ammo and use some to practice with, keeping 150 or so for next year, because I will not have time to load. Anyway…..again, enjoy your videos and hope to meet you at the Quigley. Oh…..just purchased a Bib Front shirt, for flavor! Take care.

    12:24 just installed front sight on a pedersoli sharps and b4 I started I watched your video and Larry Potter from Midway both he and you anyone else have listened to said Left to Right to remove, But on this pedersoli it came out Right to Left
    I measured the old blade sight and it is wider on the left side by .010 just thought I would mention. Leave it to me to be the oddball 😂 thanks for your video love to hear your thoughts thanks again.

      I heard a story that some of the older Pedersoli rifles were cut that way. Might make a note and keep in in the case with the rifle JIC someone decides to try and force the issue down the road (not knowing)…
