2024 Black Powder Mile Match
This video is me shooting my first Mile Match at the Wasserburger Ranch outside Lusk, Wyoming. Contrary to certain conspiracy theories, black powder rifles can shoot a mile and do so quite accurately!!

2024 Traditional Creedmore 1000 yard line

This is my string of fire on the 1000 yard line. It's a great illustration of how important wind spotting and making timely corrections (or not) can affect your score. The truth is, spotting is likely the most important skill you can work on mastering as a competitive long range shooter. Our black powder driven bullets are in the air a long time, and the wind must be accounted for in every dope...

In this video, we complete our 900 yard string of fire. Two sighter shots and then ten shots for score. I didn't do as well at 900 as I had at 800. Some difficulties adapting to conditions played havoc and cost me dearly on points. It's all a learning experience though and hopefully there will be some nuggets in here that can help out a shooter or two!

In this video, we go through a complete string of fire on the 800 yard line at the 2024 Traditional Creedmore Match held at the Wasserburger Ranch just outside Lusk, Wyoming. My hope is that the viewer will get a good idea of what it's like shooting in these matches and feel like they can join in and compete. Lots of shooters post tons of video of them shooting amazing shots and they make it look easy. Fact is...the world doesn't work that way. What they aren't showing you is all the missed shots they piled up trying to get footage of the one shot they made. Match shooting at the Quigley is different. @RecoilTherapyChannel So, you are buying alloy somewhere? I've always used wheel weights with 5% pewter added. Water quenched Makes a pretty hard bullet. Been casting Keith bullets for over 40 years and have most of his books. I use just Wheel weights, air cooled, if I want softer bullets. I also shoot a lot of cap and ball revolvers and various muzzle-loaders. I use plumbing scrap for those things. Having a way to recover your lead and recycle it is getting to be something to think about. I have or have had most of the guns you are shooting. Getting a bit old and slow for high speed stuff now but still like to shoot and get out to the range when I can. Thanks for the video.

    It is winter in Montana, and I am suffering cabin fever in my abode here in Fort Benton. I spend a lot of time on You Tube, and that is where I recently learned of the Quigley Shoot out by Forsyth. Needless to say, I was impressed, and now I am hot to go this coming summer. Being an amateur historian domociled at one of the main seats of Montana history, I take an interest in 19th century tech. Of course, the Sharps rifle has long been a fascination to me. I have on one of my walls a print of a Great Depression era symbolic mural on an interior wall of the state capitol building in Bleeding Kansas. It was painted by a WPA artist and portrays old John Brown waving a Sharps carbine in one extended hand and an open bible in the other and his long beard blowing in the wind. Dead men are at his feet in front of him. Behind him, portraying what would be the future after his death, are soldiers of two armies squaring off against one another at close range. One carries the national flag of the United States. The other carries the Confederate battle flag. Behind them is fire and smoke, a refugee wagon train, and the whirlwind. Yesterday, I ordered a Pedersoli Sportsman and am due to pick it up in about a fortnight or so. Today, I ordered the reloading dies. One of the first things that I noticed in the advertisements and in the videos is that really tall, delicate-looking rear tang sight. It did not look to me that it would take very much of an accident to do it some very serious damage. Another thing that seriously garnered mine attention, especially in this video, is the massive amount of money involved in purchasing the sight itself and the sophisticated and expensive tools that were employed at Montana Vintage Arms to install it and the store of know-how on the part of the installer. Right now I am thinking that, if I really want to get serious enough to spend that much money to have one of those wonders, I shall probably have someone like the creator of this video to install it for me. However, for the time being, I am more prone to want to just use the factory sights and see how well I can do with them. Even with my modern (new in '74) flat-shooting, long range big game hunting rifle with its 6X telescopic sight, I consider 400 yards to be my practical maximum accurate range.

    I was going to try to make the Quigley, this year....2025......but I don't think that it will happen.....combination of making sure that my sternum has healed properly, from heart bypass surgery and availability of vacation time, if I go back to my job. I've ordered both types of bore wipers....30 Buffalo Arms and 40 of Eric's. Should be plenty. Plus a 3/8 Delrin rod, from Eric. It will actually go into the breech of my Trapdoor rifle. Bruce Dow of Dade City, Fl, is currently working on assembling my Trapdoor Target rifle, with Lee Shaver Soule rear vernier sight and spirit level Marksman Front sight. I have about 50 45-70/500 black powder rounds assembled, with another 150 waiting on bullets. Don't know how far I'll get, in the game, but it will be fun. Can the felts be washed and used again? I don't see why not.

    Have you ever tried duplex loads? And if so, what’s the formula you used? Thanks!

    • @RecoilTherapyChannel
      @RecoilTherapyChannel 2 місяці тому

      @@dogbone1358 I use only straight black powder. Of all of the matches I shoot only the Quiggly allows smokeless powder. The other matches don’t allow smokeless in any form. I think that people used to duplex their loads 20 and 30 years ago before the recipe for black powder really got nailed down. Nowadays, I don’t think it would be worth trying.

    • @dogbone1358
      @dogbone1358 Місяць тому

      @ The two advantages for using duplex loads include higher velocities (which could relate to increased accuracy) and cleaner barrels as the smokeless powder burns up the black powder residue. Meaning you won’t have to clean nearly as often. The disadvantage is increased recoil. For those matches that allow smokeless duplex loads they could represent an advantage.

    • @RecoilTherapyChannel
      @RecoilTherapyChannel Місяць тому

      @ not trying to be a Debbie downer but… Higher velocity with a 600 grain bullet is not necessarily a good thing. Further, higher velocity does not equal increased accuracy. Smokeless powder does not burn as consistently as black powder does. In our competition loads, we tune a load until we have an extreme spread of around 6 ft./s for a 15 shot group with a standard deviation of 1 ft./s or less. That level of consistency is not possible with smokeless powder. Last, there are no matches that allow duplex loads at all anymore. At least not in the western United States. There might be something on the East Coast, but I’m not aware of it. No one posts anything about duplexing for silhouette or target or anything. I started off the same place as you. I went to the Quigley with smokeless loads. My first year, I was convinced I was going to do well because my load was running 1450 ft./s and I was sure that it would beat the wind. When I left there after a week of shooting with those guys, I knew that smokeless was a hopeless cause. I immediately converted to black powder and honestly, I have not loaded a single round of smokeless powder ammunition in four years now. I really need to actually load some ammo for some of my pistols and stuff, I just don’t feel like doing it.

    • @dogbone1358
      @dogbone1358 Місяць тому

      @ Thanks for the history lesson and sharing your experiences. Makes a lot of sense. I’ve been loading BP for two years in 45-70 for my Sharps, Rolling Block and High Wall. The duplex was enticing mostly from a cleaning aspect.

    • @RecoilTherapyChannel
      @RecoilTherapyChannel Місяць тому

      @@dogbone1358 duplex loads do shoot cleaner that’s true. If you’re thinking to try match shooting, there’s time to run wipers or patches between each shot and you’d want to do that anyway to keep a consistent bore condition. We tried an experiment last year at the Quigley early in the week. We chronographed loads and changed up the fouling control methods between wiping, blow tubing, and no fouling control. It played havoc with the velocity readings. Changing up your routine even a little can cause a velocity drop up to 30 fps, which is enough to have you missing low beyond 300-400 yards or so. Best thing to do is have a set routine and do it exactly the same every shot.

    • @RecoilTherapyChannel
      @RecoilTherapyChannel 2 місяці тому

      @@onebadapple83 yes. You have to mount the veggie water in there before you run the charge case through the compression die. Lots of people have done testing that determined that a .060 inch veggie wad is the minimum needed to prevent gas cutting of the base of the bullet.Subsequent testing also showed that an LDPE wad on top of the veggie wad resulted in increased accuracy.

    • @RecoilTherapyChannel
      @RecoilTherapyChannel 2 місяці тому

      @ if you’re just learning to load black powder, gas checks are fine. They will cut down on any possible leading. However, commercially available bullets are probably not sized correctly for your bore, and the letter is likely to be far too hard. Still, for plinking ammo and fun shooting they should be fine. All of my 44 caliber pistol ammo runs gas checks although that’s what smokeless powder. Gas jacks are a better fit for smokeless.

Thanks so much!

    • @RecoilTherapyChannel
      @RecoilTherapyChannel 2 місяці тому

      @@kingfatiusiii4744 my current load in 45-90 runs a 600 gr bullet. Not really suitable for a trapdoor but it wouldn’t necessarily hurt it. Black powder loading is not like smokeless. Your BP load is safe as long as the case is full up with no air gaps. You can compress a powder charge literally until the case bulges out and it will stay around 19K lbs pressure. If you have a loose charge of BP with airspace in there is when you can blow up the rifle. For your TD, you’ll likely need to slug the barrel. Most TD’s seem to run large on the barrel dimensions. It wouldn’t be surprising if you needed a bullet sized at .460” or even up to .462”. Slugging the barrel only way to find out. With a 16-1 alloy and properly sized (405 - 500 grain) bullet, you should see good accuracy out to at least 500 yards and probably farther.

    I have one in 3006 that I've had, for 20 years it was made in 1950. I have only shot it with open sites until recently. I put a scope on it and at 200 yards I have poor accuracy. I have cleaned the barrel. I can hit a pie pan, but it is all over the place. Is there anything other getting a gunsmith to look at itThat I could do?

      @@chriswhitehead5729 double check that the scope mounts are secure and absolutely parallel with each other. If it’s not a scope mounting problem, then you might look into having a gunsmith do a bedding job on the stock. I’m assuming the rifle shot OK with iron sights?
