If only I could've lived in the time when he shone the brightest and I could appreciate his light. He was a dreamer, a visionary, a pragmatist and a leader. We miss you dearly, Mr Lee.
The Harvard academics had no appreciation for the tumultuous and multi-level strategy that was being described. They wanted to hear the typical leadership rhetoric. Only if you know the historical context and lived through it will you appreciate the depth what this man has described

1.1 million people watched this video. To me, that's absolutely amazing. I look at the watch count for almost all the videos in which the video is meant to convey knowledge to the viewer. Usually 200 - 300k, is the most any video of this can expect to get. Especially, for videos put out by Harvard, that are 2 1/2 hours long. He got millions. It speaks to his reputation.
When I was young, I detested Lee Kuan Yew, I was angry, naive and stupid. I was wrong. I am now old, and I revere this man. He has led his people extremely well, he is not squeaky clean, he is not fair, he is not reasonable, but he has delivered to his people, the Singaporeans, a wonderful outcome. Singapore is a friendly, prosperous and safe place. I now know, Lee Key Yew was a wonderful leader, who served his people extremely well.
Not squaky clean? Not fair ? Not reasonable ? What are you referring too can you give some examples , I can only find good things said about LKY , nobody is an angel I would like to know some of his naughty stuff

It just means, if you are going to lead you will need to make tough decisions and some people will like your decisions and some won’t but you stand by your convictions- something he says repeatedly. Now our leaders want to be likable or pander to corporate or union interests and interest groups.
@@PS-ic4bp I agree, leadership is about making decisions and doing the things that "followers" are not prepared to do for themselves. I'm older now, I've seen more situations, and understand better what should be done. I don't always do it, but I can see what should be done.
LKY was always adamant about Singapore First Policy. Now, Singaporean parliament is thinking of submitting a minimum wage policy. LKY is also against that.
I can say without any flattery that this is arguably in the top-5 most useful and eye-opening videos I've ever stumbled across on UA-cam. His wisdom and insights are beyond lucid and invaluable. I suggest reading his book(s), many things he mentions in this videos - the Japanese occupation of of Singapore - are described more vividly and in greater detail in the book. Here's to a smashing 2023! Let the wisdom of LKY light your way in this volatile environment.

Entering an executive leadership training program for my firm next year and I’ve been looking for examples of great leadership. LKY has taught me more valuable lessons in 3-4 hours of researching than any western leader that I’ve lived under. We don’t have depth in world leaders like this anymore
This is pure gold...the great political leader is someone motivated by the virtue embedded within its culture, in his case, the benefits and well-being of the Singaporean.
"How did you secure your legitimacy?" "I did what I said I would do." We live in a time where simply doing what you said you would do is considered revolutionary.
Tok is cheap....throw yourself into such situation a country with nothing at all to start with, but only a population who needs a livelihood dependent on your leadership, like throwing u into deep sea without a float, how r u gonna survive? Singapore government (past and present) may not be the most perfect on this planet. But travelling around with a red colored SG passport with no need for visa in major cities of the world, proves SG government had done a fantastic diplomatic job, far better than others. 14:40 "I was a lawyer, I understood completely what Constitutional practices were. [The opposition] didn't."
22:55 "What made me a leader was, when the time came, I was the best speaker [in English]."
23:50 Mandarin = the Chinese language of the educated
26:20 Learning to speak was innate, but also came from wanting to be a lawyer. His parents suffered in the 1930's, and their friends who were doctors, engineers or lawyers didn't suffer so badly because they had a [high-value] profession. Took part in debate in school, became chairman of Cambridge debating club. *Being able to give clever speeches is a useful technique - but to get across, you must have a deep message that you must be able to put with **_total conviction,_** then they believe you.*
29:30 Having total conviction > Just having a clever speech
42:15 Authority = comes from demonstrating TRUST in a time of crisis. It's difficult to establish it in times of calm. When the chips are down, and you can get eliminated in a very unpleasant way, and you show that you're prepared for it and you'll fight for them - it makes a difference after that.
49:20 Personal characteristics that define *LKY's leadership: Consistent/Congruent, Determination, Communication/Persuasion of ideas & POV, True to friends and colleagues* (don't place trust in people who don't deserve it, but those you trust you must give total authority and mandate to do it their way "Use a man don't distrust him, if you distrust him, don't use him." *EQ = Emotional Intelligence. No leader can last long if his EQ is weak, because you've got to depend on other people to do the job.* So if you're hoodwinked and place trust in people who don't share your views, you're in trouble).
55:40 Emotional Intelligence > IQ. Without EQ, you're unable to sense or feel a person - which is necessary when leading people to work together in a concerted direction/effort. Being able to see THROUGH a person, or a candidate.
1:01:00 LKY ranks his IQ at 120
1:02:04 EQ / IQ combination. If I'm going to get a man to do a job that handles other people, a department or a team, he should have enough IQ to master the details so that he understands the total project - but *GOOD EQ so that he knows who to appoint to what particular sector and who will work with whom. Because if you can't get a good team going, then it's a failure - because he can't do it himself, he's got to get a team to work it for him.* (leader psychology and understanding others' blueprints)
1:10:00 Rooting out corruption. Showing up wearing white shirts and white trousers as a symbolic gesture.
1:18:00 Family values and respect for authority in Asia.
1:25:40 Leadership has to be exercised in the context of the society that it is in - without that context, it doesn't make sense.
1:46:20 The more deep-seated emotionally a problem is, the slower it is to resolve.
1:50:30 Physical infrastructure is easy, but you've got to change the behavior of people. SG inhabitants living in shantytowns, peeing in elevators after they moved into high rises.
1:51:00 Sensors in elevators that would catch people when they pee inside the lifts.
1:52:15 You've got to start with a vision, and you've got to _sell_ that vision.
1:53:20 Younger generations' preoccupation with wealth.
1:57:00 SG has airlines coming in from 80 cities around the world, every day. 5-Star hotels serving food from anywhere in the world - you can have Texas steak, or Californian steak. New technologies have "shrunk oceans."
1:59:30 Leaders must have higher energy level, the ability to project himself and his ideas, and to the desire almost instinctively to say, "let's do something better." Wanting to do something for his fellow man, not just for himself and his family.
2:03:10 "They are going to judge us, and invest or not invest, depend on how they see we're running this place." (SG stateroom)
2:06:00 "You can galvanize people easier when they are in a state of fright." (crisis scenario)
2:10:25 Leaders should write off mistakes and cut your losses as quickly as possible. The leader accepts full and public responsibility. The buck stops with me - otherwise I'm not the boss.
2:24:00 If your message is one of despair, then you should not be a leader. *You must give people HOPE - hope of improving their condition.* In the inevitable moments you feel very down (physically or emotionally, or because the world has turn adverse against you). If you're in that condition, the first thing you should do is get a good night's sleep or get in a swim, chase the cobwebs out of your mind. *IF YOU'RE NOT PHYSICALLY FIT, YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE MISTAKES. YOU MUST STAY PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY FIT.*
2:25:20 Cycling and swimming always, even when he travels. Part of keeping balance. Meditation is one way of *calming yourself.* At the end of 20min - 30min, pulse rate can go down from 100bpm too 60bpm. Still your mind and empty your mind.
2:27:00 If you're not in good shape (physically fit), you're going to make mistakes - and that's disastrous.
2:27:20 Reading for relaxation, to keep his mind sharp. You can't just switch off and go to sleep. Surfing the TV to see what's the drivel they're putting out and seeing what other people are watching (LOL). *Reading takes you into a different world for awhile.*
2:17:20 You will never get 100% consensus in views. In a multi-racial situation like SG, you're lucky if you can get 70%.
2:31:10 MISSION and PURPOSE as a leader. Without that, you're not a good leader. When you face setbacks, you'll give up. (missionary > mercenary)

Reading up on the region history plus pragmatic and logical thinking
Learning, he made learning his habit. Good leaders are learnings
He didn't just read he travelled and observed and spoke to people. I think that gave him a much deeper understanding and feel of how people felt and what was on their minds. Being well educated also helps give a strong foundation
God given insights
I am honoured to be a Singaporean... Thank you Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. RIP.

Very lucky to be lead by an exceptional leader LKY. I would love to live in Singapore. Must be nice.

if there is a movie about the Life and Death of Lee Kuan Yew who would be able to play him?
1. Tom Cruise
2. Brad Pitt
3. Michael Keaton
4. Jeff L Goldblum
How about John Cho?
Extremely fortunate to have him as our leader
What an incredible role model for all human beings.
Only if you know the historical context and lived through it will you appreciate the depth what this man has described
agree with you, they don't understand everything is related, if they don't understand background story, then they don't understand how he become who become, why he did what he did, basically they don't understand much shit going on
How superficial of the Harvard professors.
Yes they wanted points to teach their rubbish theoretical classes.

The clarity of thought this man had is amazing. Indeed one of the top leaders of the last century.
@@joeroganpodfantasy42 You can look up operation coldstore and read up on both sides of the story, and come to your own conclusion. Nevertheless, LKY was still a visionary and highly respected, in a class of its own.
Man of clear vision and thought, knowing his political and social responsibility, consistent leader.
I just missed him a lot! A great great leader who was so able to protect Singapore.

I can say without any flattery that this is arguably in the top-5 most useful and eye-opening videos I've ever stumbled across on UA-cam.
His wisdom and insights are beyond lucid and invaluable.
For some reason it has taken me almost 2 years to go through this video; this video's so packed with pertinent pieces of insight, one simply can't play it in the background; this video has to be watched properly.
I suggest reading his book(s), many things he mentions in this videos - the Japanese occupation of of Singapore - are described more vividly and in greater detail in the book.
Here's to a smashing 2023!
Let the wisdom of LKY light your way in this volatile environment.
old school leader great insight and good sense of humor
He would have capitalised and punctuated his sentenced, and would have frowned upon the spelling of humour.
A conversation in which the speaker exhibits confidence, calmness of the mind, command of the language and clarity of thoughts (4 Cs).True and tangible talent indeed. The interviewers find it challenging to frame proper questions.
RIP great man.
I was in Singapore couple of days ago. He and his son are remarkable people and Singapore is truly a testament to competent governcy
"How did you secure your legitimacy?"
"I did what I said I would do."
We live in a time where simply doing what you said you would do is considered revolutionary.

Such a brilliant LKY and to the point. My dad introduced me to him when I was planning to travel to Asia.
Singapore government (past and present) may not be the most perfect on this planet. But travelling around with a red colored SG passport with no need for visa in major cities of the world, proves SG government had done a fantastic diplomatic job, far better than others. The iron-fist style ruling of LKY did good for SG during his time. Yes, there are disagreement in the way policies were formulated and implemented, but in general LKY had set a positive cornerstone for the present PAP members. SG50 babies would never know how this man was during his prime. I grew up in the 70s 80s during his prime in SG and his leadership shines.
What was LKY controversial policies?

Sure it is not a requisite to be a leader but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have that ability. On top of that, language carries with it certain ideas and preferences and history. So having the additional understanding of the culture would certainly help with policy that impacts a nation as multicultural as his country
