a timeless leader that continues to inspire people. straightforward, unpretentious and one who speaks with authority. i am awed by his wit even in his golden years.

good to hear from a leaving national treasure, a humanist, a great achiever and most of all, a good hearted man. thanks to the university for this great textbook and powerful legacy to the craft of making lives better and more meaningful.
Just curious leaving national treasure or living national treasure? He died on 23 March 2015. Heaven open with heavy downpours during his funeral procession. Even Haven cries out of his passing.
Highly rational & pragmatic leader, with absolute focus on the needs of his people and country positive developments. His personal commitment, integrity, unwavering leadership based upon meritocracy and constant lookout for future state of affairs in the country had differentiated him from other failed leaders. Ultimately, Singapore citizens benefit and hope the younger generation would continue to steer Singapore based upon those positive attributes.
Well no one being pressed or killed unlike the way America did n. Yet point funger at others , America have been having wars everywhere killing lives china not even 1 .
If you listen carefully to what he said, it would require lots of effort to turn a country into a true first world nation; having a first wold consumer society is no guarantee that the citizens of that country will achieve collective consciousness.
Not sure how many times I watched this video and learned to remind us how to make Singapore Successful. All Singapore students must watch this video to understand why Singapore still surviving well...11 Jan 2022.
Can you imagine he wanted to do it in Malaysia unfortunately he was stopped by racism and belief that they are superior than others ethnics unfortunately for the Malaysian and the Singaporean need to know their history and be grateful to Mr Lew Kuan Yew who have cared for their people in Singapore who have built one of the top economy country in South East Asia without resources ....
as he said, his canvas wasn't very big. so it's easier to look at the details. He wouldn't have been able to accomplished what he had if he was governing some place like Indonesia.
Crazy how visionary he is,everything he says literally persist/is happening now. If world has more leaders like him or literally him still being alive, world peace wouldn't be just an ideal and everyone can prosper together.
I don't think the world lacks leaders like him but people with rationality and intelligence. Surely LKY has been among the best leaders with visions of all time, and even the direst situation would not stop him from creating a prosperous and civilized society. He is the one and only!
When I was young my whole family will gather to listen to his speech for two hour during National Day or before you will not get bored his speech is lively and you will learn something new in a few other languages
So happy to find a full speech by Mr Lee Kuan Yew. He must have had countless speeches videotaped by event organizers throughout his long career. Institutions keeping such archives really should release more of his speech videos on youtube or other publicly accessible online media.
It’s the delivery for me. I had to watch it twice! Listening to this gentleman in 2022 is like listening to a premeditated, recorded and edited podcast. He was a greater orator of all time. The question is how did his generation produced lots of great men ?
Adversity creates greatness, or in Lee’s words threw him and his compatriots into their roles. He suffered under colonial rule (though less so than many of his peers), was almost killed by the Japanese, won independence from the British and then joined and was forced out of Malaysia due to ethnic tensions. He was baptized in fire so many times that he could have only survived by being who he became. Did you know that he learned each of the other major languages in Singapore just so he could speak to the constituents in their own mother tongue? He did this in his thirties. Which other leader in the history of the world cared so much about communicating with their people that they did this? All in about a year.
Interesting question, because I think you’re right, this era was remarkable in its leaders and the fact that we have so many interesting people come up. I think this era was at a particular time of cross-pollination of ideas, worldwide ship travel was possible, air travel was possible. There weren’t so many distractions and few fields where you could make a living meaning talent wasn’t distributed so much as they are today. WW1 brought the end of the Napleonic era of state building so there was a willingness to bring in fresh perspectives. Not to mention the British Empire helped talents like LKY travel from Singapore to Britain for their education. At the time this was actually fairly common, as well. For all the racism in the Empire they believed that education was the path to Civilizing and global prosperity. They just thought ‘global’ meant the British Empire 😂
this man's mind and intelligence is razor sharp but graceful and eloquent. I am taiwanese and I wish we had or have such amazing statesman like Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
One can learn so much from this 1.5 hr speech from Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of Singapore. It has excellent lessons about world political affairs, how Singapore succeeded in turning from a third-world country into a first-world country with no natural resources, and much more. He is truly a natural leader in bad times and good times.
i am so lucky to understand Mr Lee Kwan Yew 's accomplishment how he navigated to bring the different ethnic group of people, different kind of religion to live together as neighbors in harmony, he deserve d to be Great Leader of the World.
Resist temptation is a great virtue of a leader. If a leader does this, most likely he will have peace and success. Who is/was the leader in whole world and in its history have done this.? Consider likewise your own personal kingdom, your family?
Yes, how many can resist the temptation and keep sane all these years with absolute power in his hands. Go back 2000 years, I can't find anyone only LKY.
@@imperialmind9264 leadership starts at home with training of mind and thought as well as strength to physical capability. An Indian friend told me this: When Singapore got her independence, LKY cried because he knew the worst was yet to come; when India got her independence, her people rejoiced thinking the worst was over.
Hmmm. Singapore never is like that of India.. India economy and it's political system.. never matches of China..hmmm.. Just being in that high on American debt.. Hmmm That is why.. gap between the richest and the poor never was discussed in the Indian politic..
He fought for independence from British colony. It was the separation from merger with Malaysia that saddened him. He cried when he strongly believed this merger was good for both countries. After the separation, Singapore succeeded as a multi-racial society, economy.
37:08 Once a political system has been corrupted right from the very top to the lowest ranks of bureaucracy, the problem is almost impossible to solve without a revolution. The cleansing and disinfection has to start from the top and go downward in a thorough and systematic way. It’s a long a laborious process it can only be carry out by a strong group of leaders with courage and moral authority derived from unquestioned integrity.
The fact were the leaders of the revolution came in power they became unclean themself. And the whole thing starts again. Hopefully Iraq will turn out different.
He was able to facilitate talks between Taiwan and China, which kept the peace. Also served as a bridge between USA and PRC. His voice is sorely missing from the world stage.
I regard LKY as a nation builder, a no-nonsense leader and extraordinary orator able to stir Singapore to be what it is today - a thriving island state that commands respect throughout the world.
He was one of the most brilliant leadership mindset in South East Asia n had brought a small nation island of Singapore into global phenomenon. Its people inherited the achievement n prosperity from everything premier Lee Kuan Yew had contributed during his era. The only lacked for the small nation was space but I read the book he had authored " No man is an Island" a very idealogical n rationable facts form a great mind that "size does not matters". Without doubt the best leader and prime minister in the world. Singapore from nothing to a develop nation in one generation, he is a visionary, a very capable and intelligent individual, perhaps we will never see another person like him for a long time.
13:50 Highly intelligent, educated leaders admiring Socialism, following "the wrong model." Admired Mao, etc. None of these early freedom fighters believed that *wealth was something that had to be created by ENTREPRENEURS - people who raise capital, organize workers to produce goods and services that others wanted, and would pay for because their prices were competitive.* They all believed that there were shortcuts to prosperity. And they all thought the best way was by State intervention. They all failed to develop their economies. 16:00 Free market policies > State interventionist policies 17:20 Japanese conquering of Singapore 28:25 Create or turn Singapore a 3rd world island into a 1st world oasis in a 3rd world region, so that entrepreneurs and their families from the 1st would base themselves in Singapore once they explored the region. Up to date facilities, state of the art telecoms and security. And a living environment equal to the 1st world. 33:00 Singaporean cultural diversity 33:35 2 main languages = English and the mother tongue. 34:50 To produce results we need a clean government with an effective civil service. This required strong, fair and just leaders with a moral strength to command the respect of the people. Unity in the core group of leaders ensured that we sent clear signals to our people, and avoided confusion that would have arisen if the team had bickered and split. Leaders must have that sense of being TRUSTEES, that they are only TEMPORARILY in charge of the destinies of their people. And that their duty is not only to discharge this trust, but also to pass it on to equally trustworthy and competent hands. So luxurious living while our people where left in poverty and backwardness was out. 36:00 Corruption, which has been a cancer in many societies, has to be eradicated and constantly kept down. A govt voted into office, needs an efficient, honest administration staffed by officers recruited completely on MERIT by a completely neutral body. 37:06 *Once a political system has been corrupted, right from the very top to the lowest rungs of the bureaucracy, the problem is almost impossible to solve without a revolution.* The cleansing and disinfecting has to start from the top and go downwards in a thorough and systematic way. 39:15 "Policies must be pragmatic, not dogmatic. I learned early to ignore political correctness and to reject conventional wisdom when it did not accord to reality from my experience." 44:10 Alpha Males / Females. Pressure cooker to self-select the best talent. How to identify potential leaders? Some people are natural alphas. Activists in their school days, their school prefix, sport captains or presidents of college societies. Alphas usually are extroverts with high energy levels. But as these school and college leaders grew older, many did not measure up. *The valedictorian in school does not always make it after college. Few of those voted in college as most likely to success make it in the real world. As they grow older, they need other qualities to stay as leaders - higher levels of intellectual ability, a steady character, judgement, and a decision-making capability that can win the confidence of those around them.* 45:27 The easiest attribute to determine is intelligence. Performance in examinations, IQ tests, SAT scores - they give a fair indication of analytical capability. But many PhD's failed as ministers, they lacked something. 40:15 Democracy is not the only condition required for economic development. What a country needs for growth and progress is stability and good government - one that is honest and effective, and works for the benefit of the people. Good government should never be shackled by theories, however attractive and logically arrogant. 48:00 SG rated among the top 7 least corrupt nations in the world, and the least corrupt in Asia. We have not become decadent and corrupted after 40 years in office. The old guard set high standards because they were brought up that way; the new guards have been able to maintain their self-discipline and integrity in the midst of growing affluence. WEF ranked SG as the 2nd most competitive nation in the world after the USA. 49:20 We practiced life-long learning before it became a buzzword. 50:25 LEADERS HAD TO LEAD, MAKE BOLD DECISIONS AND ACT SWIFTLY. Only later did I have to convince our people to support our decisions. 55:40 *Socialism and interventionist economic policies lead to a mis-allocation of resources, and increased opportunities for corruption. That theory was demolished as the result of the collapse of the Soviet Union.* 56:27 Are great leaders born, or are they the result of revolutionary circumstances? From my experience, I think it is because of *both.* But MORE because of circumstances. 1:01:40 Security, prosperity, and the consumer society, plus mass communications have made for a different kind of person getting elected as leader. One who can present himself and his program in a polished way. I am amazed at the way media professionals can give a candidate a new image and transform him, at least superficially, into a different personality (Sleepy Joe, Newsom). Winning an election becomes in large measure a contest in packaging and advertising. These new techniques have been so successful that USA and Europe have bought into them. A spin-doctor now is a high income profession. One in great demand. From such a process, I doubt if a Churchill, a Roosevelt can emerge. 1:03:00 Revolutionary situations throw up great leaders who demand blood, sweat and tears. Comfortable circumstances produce leaders who promise people an even easier life - whether they can deliver it or not. 1:05:30 Arnold Toynbee, in his massive study of history argues that if a challenge is too great for a people, they will fail - however great the leader is. But if there is no challenge, the people will not succeed much (creative response to challenge and stimulus). The leaders and people must be able to rise to the occasion for their country to survive. 1:08:30 "Rhetoric is part of the of business of leadership." 1:11:00 Book bannings & censoring of speech in a democracy
I have no doubt that the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School had scorched the Earth to find a government leader most befitting to deliver its first lecture on leadership. That Lee Kuan Yew was chosen....speaks volume of his stature and the country he led as Prime Minister. One should also read his book 'From Third World to First World'. Singapore is a tiny island slightly larger at low tide. A red dot larger than continent on world map. With no natural resources and a small population of mixed ethnic labour immigrants, it was not destined to survive let alone become the public administration model China adopted. Deng Xiaoping could have chosen to visit another 'great' country for inspiration..... This inaugural lecture is full of insights on what it takes to be a leader. His assessment of leaders who failed or succeeded is worth taking notes. Also noteworthy is his take that democracy does not automatically transform a backward poor country into an economic giant or well-being of the masses. India became independent in 1947 and is the world largest democracy. China came under communist rule in 1949. China suffered 100 years of humiliation and inhumanity under Japanese invasion. India enjoyed peace and protection from Empress of British India. For almost the same number of years as China, India didn't do well for its people as remarked by LKY. Leaders of America are product of the media and public relations makeover. The best and brightest in US go to Walls St to make themselves rich. Senate and Congress are made up of self-serving politicians devoid of any leadership quality......
There is so much to be learnt from LKY. Thanks for sharing all these on UA-cam and making learning possible lesson learnt based on precious past experiences and analysis of outcome of decision made then.
41:00 What a country needs for growth and progress is stability and good government one that was honest and effective and works for the benefit of the people. Government should never shackled by theories however attractive and logically elegant.
Still learning from his insights after his passing. His words move with the times. Just like leaders have to move with the times otherwise they will be replaced. Insightful and Pragmatic, he was very sharp and related his answers to the questioner if he could.

For those who don't know, LKY had ALOT of foreign media critics from 1970s-90s. Words like Authoritarian, Dictator, Lack of Human Rights were often used to describe him and his party. He even once joked in a 1984 speech (sarcastically).... "No group of men are wiser than foreign correspondents who have beem here for 6 months". There is another country now in Asia that is getting the same treatment from Foreign Media
It’s easy to over-generalize and draw conclusions too early. North Korea is also criticized for authoritarian, dictator-run, and lacks human rights. Look how far they’ve come going against the grain.
China's Deng X P had healed the advice and took the challenge from the little red dot to overturn the mainland into a sophisticated cosmopolitan nation ! A great success for the Chinese people , indeed.
Singapore really is a startup at its core - Questioning the status quo since inception - Building the right culture + flywheels for growth - Always reinventing for the future
If Malaysia, Indonesia, India n Pakistan run along the line of Sg there will be a revolution within a week. Only 835 sq kilo kilometers. Incompatible to big countries. Much over rated thru publicity campaign.
Malaysia has a long road ahead to achieve what Singapore has achieved or sadly never will. It’s a racist and discriminatory government against her minority citizens. Malaysia under Najib Razak is known as a kleptocratic regime and the practice continues.

A free independent press is desirable. Unfortunately today’s press is no longer Independent and balanced. We see today’s main stream media (MSM) the propaganda arm of ideologues. I remember in my youth when, after reporting the news, editorial opinions were at the end of newscasts and identified as such. The news stations were also required to provide access to both sides of a political discourse. Unfortunately modern journalism is no longer fair, independent, nor balanced. They no longer factually or neutrally report the news but politically divisive agitating the public leading to the destruction of the social fabric.
In case anyone wonders why the audience laughed @30:58 when LKY "talked about phones ringing at concerts" while looking at someone intently.... It was the guy whose phone went off @13:53.

Political leaders of this caliber revered with high esteem worldwide, left a profound mark in history of mankind. That's the problem in the Philippines when we choose Tagalog to be our national language and call it Filipino. It made one Ethnic group feel superior or advantage. We should have done what Singapore did and chose English to make the playing field equal for everyone.
Actually, most didn't know that, but the national language of Singapore is Malay. Singapore recognises four official languages, English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. And the language of business in Singapore is English. The language of Education is also English. English is not chosen because it is level playing field for everyone. It is because Singapore does the most business with UK and US.
Always respect Mr Lee. I know many western people doesn't like you because they do not have the heart of Singapore, they just don't know what they are talking about
LKY is a great statesman, straight talking, pragmatic and not seeking to be popular or to be a celebrity. He has an extraordinary team who is dedicated in assisting him so that Singapore can prosper. These old guards are very rare people who put Singapore first, if not we would not be what we are today. A country will fail no mattter how big or how much natural resources they have, if leaders are corrupted and people are lazy and dishonest.
Singapore is the envy of its neighbours thanks to LKY. Malaysia threatened to disconnect the tap and Singapore took it as an opportunity to develope the wold's most advanced filtration system.
In TV he cried when Kuala Lumpur told him to Malaysia. I would rather say Singapore was lucky to have been told to leave. Today Malaysia is in shambles where corruption was 365 days issue here. Mind you no public holidays for this crime. This activity was increased in multiples where if you don't bribe the civil service nothing moves. And many more slowed down and may come to a complete stop when the nation goes bankrupt.
Singapore is not lucky, Singapore worked very hard. If KL did not tell Sg to leave, we might have a more prosperous MalaySia for all Malaysians today, and we might not even have to work as hard!
Big ideas are impossible to achieve in hostile world ruled by geopolitics. Gaddafi tried in Libya by selling oil in gold dinars and died by NATO bombing, Mossadeq tried in Iran by nationalising Shell oil Company and died in violent government coup supported by CIA, Joseph Broz Tito tried in Yugoslavia and his country was completely destroyed after his death and NATO bombed capital of Belgrade (same as Adolf Hitler did in WW2), Olof Palme tried in Sweden and was assassinated by assassin...etc. What propelled Singapore as successful economy of today was fight against Communism in times of Cold War. And it's vassal status as extremely cheap and free market capitalist colony of United States (same as South Korea, Taiwan and Japan were after WW2). But that how it was in times of Cold War. Today with the rise of China there will be even more violent and crazy world. Because old and dying Empire (United States) will have to fight with new and more powerful superpower called China.

Amazing as usual 👍. He should live longer to see how Singapore has surpassed HK in total GDP, not just per capita. Just a slight correction -- spitting is no longer our norm since we started the 'Keep HK Clean Campaign' in 1972. When I was invited to study the 'IT Development by the 4 Asian NICs & Japan' by the APO in 1987, the conclusion of my Country Report was that all other Governments (Sing. included) have 10 initiatives, but HK only got 4. Maybe, that's the difference between a country & a colony. As a HKie, since our return to China in 1997, how much I wish we could have the HKSAR-CE like LKY, but unfortunately it has never happened... 😢 -- Ex-Prof. & Speaker, Oxford U.
His mantra of “just do it” when he took Singapore out of the Federation without holding a second referendum, surely that must ring a bell for students of contemporary politics.
@@QuizmasterLaw Perhaps if Deng had graduated from Oxbridge, he wouldn’t have a spitting pontoon in front of him when negotiating the future of HK with Baroness Thatcher. There is a old Chinese proverb, “Respect is given by others, but shame and humiliation can only be brought on by oneself”.

Uniquely straightforward and insightful. No mincing of words. LKY has been dead for six years and I’m still learning important things from him.
What about his greatest legacy, his son, Lee Hsean Loong? What can we learn from him?

Highly rational & pragmatic leader, with absolute focus on the needs of his people and country positive developments. His personal commitment, integrity, unwavering leadership based upon meritocracy and constant lookout for future state of affairs in the country had differentiated him from other failed leaders. Ultimately, Singapore citizens benefit and hope the younger generation would continue to steer Singapore based upon those positive attributes.
Pragmatism over dogmatism - one of the many brilliant statements made by the former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yew.
Well everyone have the right to choose n prefer , is this wrong , or should he ask for your preference or instruction

For a national leader, his attention to even the smallest details is utterly remarkable
Indeed.
as he said, his canvas wasn't very big. so it's easier to look at the details.

It’s the delivery for me. I had to watch it twice! Listening to this gentleman in 2022 is like listening to a premeditated, recorded and edited podcast. He was a greater orator of all time. The question is how did his generation produced lots of great men ?
In the words of the king in the Mulan cartoon film: such a person only appear once in a dynasty!
Probably WW2

16:00 Free market policies > State interventionist policies
17:20 Japanese conquering of Singapore
28:25 Create or turn Singapore a 3rd world island into a 1st world oasis in a 3rd world region, so that entrepreneurs and their families from the 1st would base themselves in Singapore once they explored the region. Up to date facilities, state of the art telecoms and security. And a living environment equal to the 1st world.
33:00 Singaporean cultural diversity
33:35 2 main languages = English and the mother tongue.
I learned early to ignore political correctness and to reject conventional wisdom when it did not accord to reality from my experience."
44:10 Alpha Males / Females. As they grow older, they need other qualities to stay as leaders - higher levels of intellectual ability, a steady character, judgement, and a decision-making capability that can win the confidence of those around them.*
45:27 The easiest attribute to determine is intelligence.
That theory was demolished as the result of the collapse of the Soviet Union.*
56:27 Are great leaders born, or are they the result of revolutionary circumstances?
1:08:30 "Rhetoric is part of the of business of leadership."
1:11:00 Book bannings & censoring of speech in a democracy
Nothing is permanent.. everything comes and goes… the sunny days are over and the storm is coming .. thick dark clouds overcast the land …
What an amazing human being!!! Thank you very much Mr. Lee Kuan Yew! Rest in Peace Sir...

Rwanda too
Isn’t that the time when US tried to bribe him and his party but was unsuccessful?
This time, the foreign media are doing to bring down a going to be great country and it may lead to a 3rd world war.
China's Deng X P had healed the advice and took the challenge from the little red dot to overturn the mainland into a sophisticated cosmopolitan nation ! A great success for the Chinese people , indeed.

I'd like to see the lady journalist who asked her question about the press lead a country to peace and prosperity.
Her question was fair. You're responding even more negatively than he did

A true leader who understood the strengths and weaknesses of his people, the place of his country in the region and the world and had the vision and persistence to carry his people through. He created a nerito critical society, Hope this will continue.
He has appointed his son to lead Singapore with his wisdom. Look how great he made Singapore. Singaporeans still choose to continue his legacy over their loved ones' future.
It is very common to see people blaming colonialism or oligarch for the plight of countries. Well, the real answers lies in this speech.
Brilliant Mr Lee Kwan Yu!
LKYew is one of the most capable leader of the world. My respect.. 🙏
Agree yep 👍
I pray to the good God to send leaders like him in every country ,so that every country can be prosperous.the world would be a better place if you have legend like him.
@@cancanjaker1620 Flexibility which is wise and pragmatic, instead of tunnel visioned and dogmatic.
Always respect Mr Lee. I know many western people doesn't like you because they do not have the heart of Singapore, they just don't know what they are talking about
A really impressive speech that can only come from an experienced and talented politician!
LKY saw the fundamental problems of western democracy we are experiencing now like a hawk back in 2000.
Dont speak rubbish, Msia is my country n had a gd life growing up
22 years ago and sound relevant today.
Amazing leader and communicator. GOAT!
GOAT, or G00K ?
Political leaders should learn and implement big ideas from Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew ....Thanks so much for uploading this video ....
Singapore is lucky to hv LKY as a great statesman n great leader.
With All Due #Respect, Greetings Sir Founding Father Mr Lee Kuan Yew. RIP Mr Lee Kuan Yew And Thank Tou For Sharing This Video With Us All. #Yes #indeed. 💜🇸🇬✌Multy #racialharmony Multy #language Multy #culture Multy #religiousharmony 🇸🇬 #love 💜 #hope 🤲 #faith 🧘♂️ #peace ✌ #harmony 🕊🕊🕊🤗🤗
-- Ex-Prof. & Speaker, Oxford U.
Couldn’t agree more
Unfortunately nobody took notice of his wisdom, free, but nobody took heed
His mantra of “just do it” when he took Singapore out of the Federation without holding a second referendum, surely that must ring a bell for students of contemporary politics.
Deng Xiaoping, unfortunately, is also no longer alive to correct you...
@@albertjudah3676 LOL Brits talking about respect and HK in the same sentence. You guys have zero shame.
China have been sending top scholars, senior civil servants and even government officials to Singapore to study for more than 20 years. They brought home valuable lessons in nation building, no-nonsense LKY style.
LKY is really a brilliant stateman which thus far no Asean leaders can come close to him👍👍👍💪. Singapore was expelled from Malaysia was a blessing disguise if till today Singapore was part of Malaysia led to nowhere
Much respect and admiration to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew..💐..If not mistaken, he was a good 👍 motivation to Mr. Deng Xiaoping 💐 to modernized China to the next levels of developments as what we are seeing nowadays..👏❤👌..
