- During World War II, Argentina pursued a policy of neutrality. This stance was largely influenced by its president at the time, Juan Perón, who maintained close ties with both the Axis and Allied powers. While officially neutral, Argentina did provide some support to the Allies, such as supplying food and raw materials. However, it also harbored Nazi war criminals after the war through a network known as the "ratlines."
One of the most infamous cases was that of Adolf Eichmann, a high-ranking Nazi official responsible for organizing the logistics of the death camps in Europe. He fled to Argentina after the war and lived there under a false identity until he was captured by Israeli agents in 1960.
Overall, Argentina's role during World War II was characterized by a delicate balance of neutrality while maintaining connections with both sides of the conflict.

In 1944 Brazil foreign minister, Oswaldo Aranha, made a press conference with Americans where he argued that if Argentina joined the axis the Brazilian air force would level Buenos Aires.

@@gewehr4395 Uh, no, by 1943 Brazil had one million men mobilized while Argentina in another hand had only 150k at arms.
The difference was so great that this was one of the main causes of the 1943 coup. Brazil had been behind Argentina until the infamous decade began, but by the 1940s the gap was getting longer and this was causing a wave of fear and hatred in Argentina.

Stuka pilots were war criminals, who dived into crowds of retreating refugees, bombed and machine gunned them, without any concern for their age or gender. The same was done to trains that were heading eastward, i.e.away from the advancing German troops, and my future father was on board of one. Three years, later he enlisted in the Red Army, to make sure that the German pilots run all the way to friendly Argentina.

Argentina had a territorial dispute with Britain (and Chile) over the Antarctic Peninsula and several Antarctic islands like the South Shetland Islands and South Orkney Islands. Argentina used Britains distraction because of the war to strengthen its claim on the disputed territories. Britain established permanent bases in Antarctica in response to Argentinian and Chilean claims (Operation Tabarin). The early years of the Antarctic sovereignty dispute are part of the complicated politics of Argentinian and Chilean neutrality. The book ‘Frozen Empires’ by Adrian John Howkins mentions that Japan issued an official protest when Chile announced its Antarctic claim in November 1940.

About the influence of U.S. movies and "American" ideas, this has been a trend since the 1930s aimed at making them more palatable to American audiences. It's important to note from the Argentine perspective that Argentina was more aligned with the United Kingdom, which was a natural ally at the time. The issue arose because the U.S. was not in favor of this alignment (despite being allies, it's crucial to remember that for Argentina, the U.S. was seen as attempting to usurp regional power).
The key takeaway here is that the majority of the population was pro-Allied or, at most, neutral.
However, those in power had different agendas yet maintained a stance of neutrality, as entering a war was not beneficial for anyone in Argentina. A significant theme during this period was "neutrality," which they largely adhered to.
A closer examination of the Concordancia during WWII shows their pro-Allied stance with some concessions. When the military took over, their approach was more inclined towards "starting a war".
Nevertheless, influential military figures with political connections who advocated for joining either the Axis or Allies were sidelined.
There is a common belief, perhaps involving figures like Ramírez, Farrell, and even Perón, that they might have preferred a German victory, but they were not foolish enough to engage in a conflict at the southern end of the world without any hope of support.
For a deeper insight, consider the book "1943: El Fin de la Argentina Liberal y el Surgimiento del Peronismo," where Perón discusses his view on the war. He predicted that Germany might initially succeed against France but was unlikely to be victorious in the long term.

Argentina was part of the British "informal empire", made up of Latin American and other countries before the First and Second World Wars, and which weren't under British political dominion, but under British political and economic influence. While it can be said that Peron's post-WWII nationalisation of firms like the British-owned tram company in Buenos Aires was the beginning of the end for that, British influence was felt, and traces of it still remain in aspects of Argentine life, like the English-, Welsh-, and Irish-Argentine communities and the name of a Buenos Aires suburb, Hurlingham, among others.
Peron knew perfectly well that Hitlers crazyness togheteher with the other lunatics form his circle of power would destroy the Reich, he had no real sympathy for Nazis whatsoever (nor Eva Peron who actually harshly hated them as she did with all military), his only interest was to win thz maximum amount possible of scientists and engineers over yanks, brits (Operation Paperclip) and soviets to help develop Argentinas nuclear&industrial plans faster
In fact that was a success story at such an extent that the Kingdom of the Netherlsnds is nowadays building in Petten-Noord Holland, one of the worlds most capable nuclear reactors for experimental and medical purposes, under the design and regie of argentine state owned INVAP S.E. (INVESTIGACIONES APLICADAS-SOCIEDAD DEL ESTADO) which is a hi-tech spin off firm from the National Argentine Atomic Commission founded by Peron in the 50s

That’s almost double that of countries like the UK or France, and 55% higher than Germany or Canada. The US has the fastest growing economy in the developed world. So the gap between America and Europe will continue to grow
The only countries that have higher GDP Per Capita than the US are small countries that are either Tax havens or banking oriented like Ireland or Switzerland. There’s no country with a population over 10 million that’s even close to the US in terms of Per Capita wealth

Hello Stefan, interesting video about my country Argentina, I told you that you forgot to mention the other Uboat that also surrendered in 1945 at the Mar del Plata naval base, the U 530. And if possible, in another video that you publish that during the general's government J.D. Peron collaborated technologically with the aeronautical engineer Kurt Tank and veteran Luftwaffe pilots such as Adolf Galland, Werner Baumbach and Hans U. Rudel. It was not all murderers who entered Argentina. Finally, I recommend the book "Argentine Nazis" by Julio B. In Argentina, impressive aces lived and advised the Argentine Air Force such as: Hans Ulrich Rudel, Adolf Galland, Werner Baumbach (died in an air accident as a member of the crew of an Avro Lancaster in the Río de la Plata in 1953) and engineers such as :Reimar Horten and Kurt Tank.

I can hardly wait for more on Argentina. There are so many possible subjects: The red line as you said, the conflict between Peron and the church, Italian minority, German minority, tensions between Brazil and Argentina, the Falkland Islands, the Welsh minority in Patagonia, Swiss minority in Patagonia, native peoples and what happened to them, etc. The list could go on. I am very interested in your perspective. Do you intend to go to Uruguay?

We also have a very small Afrikaner (Boer) community in Argetina who arrived in 1902 after the last Boers resistants were defeated. They even brounght an elephant! The Afrikaner language still survives in a tiny minority among those Boer-descended Argentinians. You can read a very good article about them in The Conversation.
The Swiss migrants did not settle in Patagonia but in the Central and Northern Provinces of Misiones and Santa Fe

There was a huge British community in Argentina in the early XX century, something not to be forgotten, and the economic presence of Britain (railways and meat industry mostly) was far more significant than that of Germany by far.
My grandmother had cousins who went to war on the Allied side: three of them as nurses in the RAF and one as a tank crew member in North Africa.
In those days the Falklands topic was a footnote on the Argentine/UK relations and the country owed most of its development to British capital.
One additional remark: the third greatest immigrant community in Argentina was Polish. When the world started the outrage of the September invasion did not go unnoticed and generated a lot of displease in the society.

It would be good to see the facts that support such claim because from what I know that was not purely the case. There were lots of orthodox Poles living in the lands of the former Russian empire who had decided to seek better opportunities, as well as catholic ones fed up of being in the epicenter of perennial wars. Additionally Poland prided herself of being a multiethnical country so, I don't know 🤷🏼♂️

Thank you so much for a fairly balanced take on a very complex history that goes beyond the usual, uniformed "it's-all-black-and-white" boring trope!
I'd like to contribute the following information to complete, substantiate and expand a little bit the information provided in this video.
(1) Starting in 1860, 6 millions of European settlers arrived in Argentina, a country then with barely 1 million inhabitants. In percentage (%), it's a very unique case in history far much more important than mass immigration to the US, Canada, Australia and NZ.
(2) Of these 6 million European settlers, only 3 million stayed and made Argentina their new country. The rest had to return to Europe, due to the fact that most of the arable lands they had been promised by the Argentine governments or seeking to buy themselves were already in the hands of the Argentine landowners aristocracy (the "estancieros" or mega ranch owners). The lands they were able to buy (and, in some cases, provided for free or almost free) were of poor quality or very, very, very far away of any town or city where to sell the goods produced. Thus, in due time, following economic stagnation, many of those small farmers had no other option than to sell their farms to the mega ranch owners. Vicious circle!
(3) The majority of the 3 million settlers who stayed in Argentina, being practically barred from land acquisition, flocked into the main cities (Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza, Tucumán, Resistencia, etc.), and being poor tended to concentrate themselves in the cheapest accomodation available for them, the "conventillos" or derelict big houses/pensions, where they forged strong solidarity and friendship ties (and, of course, in the different trades and jobs they held). They realized that many of them, although poor and poorly educated, had experienced themselves, directly or indirectly, different forms of peasants' and workers' organizations (part of the reason they all had to emigrate in the first place was that European governments were persecuting communists, socialists, etc.). Almost immediately they created or flocked into the few existing peasants' and workers' organizations in Argentina, which they impregnated with their Marxist views and making Argentinians get acquainted, in a direct way, with the different Marxist theories.
(4) At the same time, the mega ranch owners had their main client in the UK (accesorily other countries too), where they also imported a lot of luxury goods too (English travelers in 1860 describe how the Argentinian gauchos were wearing exclusively English clothes). The UK was very happy with the tremondous and cheap supplies from Argentina, and invested massively their capitals in building railroads, roads, ports, silos but also banks, insurance companies, lodgments for their employees, consequently schools and hospitals too, etc.
(5) At the beginning of the 20th century, the Argentine opinion starts to realize that there's at least some truth in what those European setlers were saying, that basically (A) the ultra rich Argentinian landowners' class was stealing them out from the formidable profits the Argentinian (and European) peasants and workers were producing, (B) the ultra rich Argentinian landowners were not bothered in investing their fortunes in creating any industries at all, and the British capitals entirely controlling the few existing industries meant all the profits were sent back to the UK, and (C) for that to change and an Argentinina industry to emerge, nationalization measures had to be taken; which in turn meant that seeing that neither the politicians nor the military wanted that, then some "strong man" with a state vision was necessary; therefore (D) Mass demonstrations, general strikes and other similar actions were needed in order to wake up whomever that strong man may be and invite him to take the opportunity to either be elected as president or straight out seize power.
(6) For 30 years, ferocious military and police repressions against the peasants and workers follows those actions, civil unrest grows, the only semi-democratic government of the Radical Party ("Radical" here meaning something akin to Democratic) is cut short with the first military coup in 1930. It also coincides with the Great Depression of 1929. The main hit comes from the UK, Argentina's biggest client and investor: the Brits decide to implement the "Imperial Preference" policy, meaning only imports from British dominions will be allowed. Argentina is left out. The economy plummets. More civil unrest, more menacing, now it's a growing current that soon will break off the damn. Something must be done, urgently. Argentina manages to convince the UK to let them in, it's the Roca-Runciman Agreeement of 1933, recognizing a de facto state of affairs were Argentina was indeed, to practical effects, an economic outpost of the British Empire. 1933 it's also the 100th anniversary since the British invasion of the Malvinas and the expulsion of the Argentine population. So now we have several conflicting facts, overlapping and intertwinned: (A) the need and the aspiration for a modernization and industrialization of the Argentinian economy to solve Argentinia's dire disparity of revenues (no use being the 5th richest country on Earth when 90% of that wealth goes into the pockets of the mega ranch owners), (B) the evidence of the total lack of will by the mega ranch owners AND the British AND the government to invest the formidable profits in modernization and industrialization (except those industries directly related to exporting beef and the like), (C) Soviet Russia is rapidly industrializing under direct workers control (the Party leaders indeed, but this wasn't known back then), and previously other European countries like France, the Netherlands, Belgium... but also Italy and, more importantly, Germany (ahem!) were already industrialized thanks to a combination of wise capitalist/bourgeoisie class investment and governments regulations, spending, and in some cases direct investment; and finally (D) somehow, it all points out to the good Argentinian people being "cheated out" of development by both internal "class enemies" and outside "imperialist interests" (who also happened to have invaded Argentina in 1806 and 1808, plus the Malvinas invasion of 1833... see a pattern there?), the solution must them lie somewhere in nationalism.

(7) The Argentine Army and Navy were initially trained, supplied and modelled under the British model, follwoing the super heavy influence of the UK in the internal matters of Argentina. Moreover, as always, the local rich class fashion themselves after the current top country in the world at the moment (still Britain back then). And to top it off, the officers of the Argentinian Army and Navy come from those ultra rich landowning families so fully invested in mimicking everything British, including tea & scones. Now, because (A) the UK was routinely wiping their a$$ with the protest and reclamation letters that Argentina had been sending since the British invasion of the Malvinas in 1833, (B) neighbour Chile had chosen to model their Army according to the Prussian model, and were very good about it, and there were still some unresolved borders dispute between Chile and Argentina, (C) Germany was a very good "alternative", succesful modernization and industrialization model for Argentina if the Biritsh model still bore no fruit; and (D) there was since 1860 several strong communities from Volga Germans and other parts from Germany; then it seemed natdural, logical to a few among the Argentinian Army and Navy officers to experiment with the German model Army and see what it gives. Germany of course is very happy to export knowledge and gain a significant foothold that may lead eventually to more business opportunities, so naturally they exploit the "British bloodsucker" narrative that we Argentines are starting to get interested to buy as it seems to suit us better. Argentinian Army and Navy officers start thinking that, by playing the German card against the traditional Britih card, perhaps the British will react and instead of treating Argentina as a giant (but miserable) ranch, will perform the same magic tricks they did with their White-only plantations of the USA, Canada, Australia, and NZ; if it doesn't work, then maybe the Germans will do the tricks instead. Wait and see!
In the meantime, the US has been stealthily but steadily eating away at British interests in Argentina and supplanting them, so of course the US doesn't want "foreing"' competition, specially form a non Anglo country like Germany.
(8) The apparent successes of Mussolini (1929), Hitler (1933), and Franco (1939) further stir the impression among many (but NOT the majority) of the Argentines, including the Army and the Navy, that success, that is, economic and industrialization sucess (except for poor Spain, totally exsangued after their bloody Civil War of 1936-1939) can be achieved without having to hand your a$$ to either the UK or the US. "Why not?", they think. "After all, what have they really do for us, the Brits? Those railroads are not there to help people travel across Argentina to find job opportunities, they are there to move the cattle from deep inside the Pampas to the slaughterhouses in Rosario and Buenos Aires only, so they can export it to Britain!". This is not the CONVICTION of the majority, but it's however an undercurrent general feeling, paralleled by an equal attraction to Soviet ideals. We have 3 competing ideologies then and there: the traditional British laissez-faire capitalism (American capitalism being merely the same extraction economy but for the US instead of the UK), the Soviet planned economy, and the most recent model of Fascism and Nazism. The important factor here being that the attraction for Nazism and Fascism was only a hurt-feelings reaction to the indifference or condescendence from British capitalism (the Soviet appeal being of course strong among sections of the peasants and workers, but not of the middle class).

Only, if you say "duck it, I've been dealt no cards almost, the only thing I can do is remain neutral and see what happens", you can't rule out the possibility that in the distant future a growing legion of morons will start painting you all over with swastikas and yelling "yeah you stinky stupid Latino monkey, you sided with the Notsees, ugly you!". What to do? Ask the big guys for their opinios:the US is very clear that they want you in their side; the UK, more cunning, strongly advises for Argentina to remain neutral so that food and raw materials shipments from Argentina could reach Britain without being sunik by the Nazis (3 Argentine ships will be sunk anyway by the Germans, all in US waters, one apparently a plain mistake of identification by the U-Boat, and the 2 others deliberate but who cares in the heat of an action against an enemy port). With this official advise to remain neutral during the war, Argentinian Junta (and mega ranch landowners) feel relieved and super happy. This is what happens until March 1945, when Argentina finally declares war on the Axis.
(10) As Germany finally capitulates, both he US and the UK resolve to: (1) preserve at all costs the majority of Nazi leadership (except for the merely 21 Nazis hanged in Nuremberg), IN Germany and Austria (literally millions), to oppose the initial resistance against the much feared Soviet invasion of Western Europe, (2) to smuggle out of Germany and Austria, and into the US and the UK, all those wonderful "scientists" and "technicians" members of the Nazi party, war criminals or not, to prevent the Soviets from seizing them first and using thepm for their military and industrial plans, and use them to that effect int he US and the UK. The surviving 8,000 Nazi war criminals from Waffen-SS 3rd Panzergrenadier Division "Galizia", 100% Ukrainian, enthusiastic manic mass killers of Jews, fellow Ukrainians, and other Soviet citizens are smuggled in the UK to keep a low profile until they die, together with the other 7,000 Nazi Party members from the different German armed forces who will call England their new "home, sweet home". But that's still half the 30,000 Nazi Party members, including Nazi War criminals, the CIA smuggled in the US thanks to Operation Paperclip ("yeah, they're all ducking Nazi SOBs, but they're all OUR Nazi SOBs!"). The Soviet Union does the same, France does the same, the Netherlands do the same, Belgium does the same, even tiny Andorra and San Marino may catch a few if they made the effort.

Stefan! Would have been great to see you in BA for a good argentinian Asado. The influence of the Catholic Church on certain circles at the time is very understated especially in the Army. Still some of the descendentes of these officers follow a fringe catholic sect caled Lefebristas mass in latin and all that. They sencierly had a very bad view of the sole less and plutocratic anglo protestant world. I would strongly recommend anything by Loris Sanata. My Grandma went to celebrate the liberation of paris in 1944 in plaza francia. The police stooped the celebration.

Note, there were 2 U-Boote surrendering to Argentina towards the end of WWII. Most equipment before the war was of US/UK origin. some equipment though, was purchased in Germany, like rifles, some machine guns, M35 helmets. The US interference was used by Peron before the elections that brought him to power as president. His slogan was "Braden o Peron" (Braden or Peron, Braden was the US ambassador, who would later serve for the United Fruit Company). Hiring some German people after WWII by Peron was because they were deemed useful for development of the Argentine industries, or as advisors in the armed forces. Note worthy, several thousand Argentines served in the British forces, and an unknown number did so in the Axis.

Great video. It's actually not surprising, as even though many people want history to be black-and-white, it never is. Even if the military, or govt, supported Hitler, that certainly didn't mean that most of the Argentine citizens did.In the US at the time, we had a huge German and Italian population, many that didn't speak English yet, so I'm sure we had many people that sympathized with Mussolini and Hitler at first. That didn't make them Nazi's or Fascists. Now if they still supported them after 1942 then maybe they were.

Yes, but that's only ONE side of the whole matter. Perón and Argentina ALSO welcomed 38,000 Jews refugees and was among the very first countries to recognize Israel in 1948. Perhaps a parallel example will help you and others understand better the Argentine paradox: the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939. With millions of Spaniards in Argentina since 1860, there were of course very strong blood ties before the Spanish Civil War. When it ended, in 1939, thousands of Spaniards, BOTH Republicans (leftitsts, like my mother's family) and Francoist (rightist) fled to Argentina to escape the horrible poverty in a Spain literally devastated, wrecked and ruined as a result of the Spanish Civil War. And why is that? Very simple: because our country is super huge and quite empty, with very low population, so it has ALWAYS had a 100% "open arms" policy, We don't give a s#!t about your politics as long as you live that s#!t behind and make Argentina your new home forever. Everybody is welcome, and that, unfortunately, also includes the bad ones.
Now, about your "There was a big enclave of Germans in Argentina after WW2" that's factually inaccurate, becasue that "big enclave" existed since 1860, looooong before WW2. Part of that German community were "Volga Germans" who were both tired of Tsarist Russia and allured to the "free land properties" promises that Argentina offered. It's just natural that some Germans would continue to emigrate to Argentina after WW2, because Germany was destroyed, no job prospects, and the size of the German communities in Argentina guaranteed the connections and support to get a job and a house, just like any other foreign community in Argentina (Jews, Spaniards, Italians, Irish, British, Dutch, etc.). Also to note, the German (and Italian) communities were deeply divided about their politics, with of course a strong Natzi or Fascist minority but also an equally strong anti-Natzi or anti-Fascist minorities. In fact, those leftists Germans and Italians were the intellectual elite of anarchist, trotskysts, communist, and general socialist movements in Argentina, many of them were killed by both the Argentinian Army and the Argentinian Federal Police durring the periodic savage repressions of massive workers protests all around Argntina in the 1920s and 1930s.
To note also, Perón DID NOT "use Natzis to shore up his regime", because he didn't need ANY help atd all, because he was immensely popular (still is till today). What he did was to use the same approach as the US, the UK, France, the Soviet Union and other countries: take in as many "scientists" and "technicians" as he could in order to kick-start the industrialization of Argentina that had been aborted several times before because of unexpected deep economic crisis, like the Great Depression (not the only instance). He was a pragmatist that wanted to secure for Argentina the economic strength and backbone so it wold never again become an informal outpost of the British Empire, or their successors, the American Empire. All the US had to do was to provide the expertise and investment capitals needed to spearhead the economy to secure in the Southern tip of the Hemisphere a country as reliable, trustful and ressourcefuls as cAnada. But because of the imperialist condescending tones of the UK and the US, of course it couldn't but itch Argentina very badly and kind of push us towards an anti-Anglo stance.

Yes, after WW2 Argentina welcomed many Nazis on the run, but also many victims of the Nazis (Holocaust survivors, for instance), as part of its long-standing policy of welcoming European immigrants.

In less than 20-30 years, a whole new culture, unrecognizable from the Spanish period, emerged. A mixture of the low class culture of Italy and Spain. With a Spanish that sounds very Italian, creating new sounds, foods, even architecture. The architecture in many parts of Argentina is no more than a complete chaos of styles and ideas. There is no clear architecture. That chaos coincides with the waves of migration.

Argentina produced nothing that the USA didn't - wheat, beef, oil, etc.. By contrast Europe, particularly the UK and Spain, relied heavily on Argentine cereal and beef imports. So a full pivot to the USA was neither practicable, nor advantageous.
Yes and no, because anyway another supplier, like Argentina, would have been welcomed in the middle of a war effort, and more importantly it would have secured for the US a decidedly pro-Allied country that in due time would have turned out another Canada (trustful, reliable, ressourceful, friendly, a partner in crime) instead of an angry chihuahua biting at their ankles and b!tch!ng about not being treated fairly and given the exact same importance as, say, the UK.

It also sent leather and boots and even supplied some pistols. Most importantly, the payment for this was largely retained in London until after the war, thereby subsidising the British war effort. Some 20% of British POWs were supported by the Argentine Red Cross and three RAF squadrons were formed on money raised in Argentina. Furthermore, thousands of Anglo-Argentines served in the British armed forces and suffered a higher proportion of casualties than any formal part of the British empire.
The USA's problem with Argentina was not that it wasn't an asset to the Allies, but that its British connections made it the last country in Latin America that tried to pursue an independent foreign policy to Washington in defiance of the Monroe Doctrine.

British companies owned the Argentine railway system and Anglo-Argentinians controlled the beef industry. In the 1950's Peron nationalized the railways. The British companies didn't mind as it was losing money. They then nationalized the British owned meet companies. They claimed a huge rise in production which quickly shrank as the rise was achieved by slaughtering the breading stock and that can only be done once. Beef then being exported to Britain would be sold to another buyer while at sea on not arrive. Britain then turned to Australia and the US which proved to be reliable suppliers. From there Peron continued with his economy destroying policies.
Nope. That's all wrong. Let's start from the beggining: in 1929, with the Great Depression rippling all across the world, Britain was also very affected. Among the emergency measures taken by the British government was the new policy of "Imperial Preferences", meaning that only imports from British dependencies and colonies would be allowed. Now, with the UK being simultaneously the biggerst investor in Argentina and their biggest client, of course in Argentina we panicked too. With our beef exports coming to a halt, unemployment rose sharply, leading to massive demonstrations and civil outrest (thousands of strinking beef workers were slaugthered). So after years of negotiations, the Roca-Runciman Agreement was signed (in 1933!) so that Argenina was exceptionnally allowed into the Imperial Preferences system, recognizing the fact that, to all practical effects, Argentia was indeed an informal part of the British Empire in economic matters.
Moreover, at the outbreak of WW2, and with the Marinenkrieg effectively cutting off Britain's ship lanes, it was the British themselves who urged Argentina to stay neutral, so that Argentina ships loaded with beef, wheat, corn, sugar and what not and bounded for Britain wouldn't be sunk by the Lone Wolves Marinenkrieg submarines that hunted down ANY ships, both civil/merchant and military, that dared to cross the Atlantic to supply the UK. Had Argentina sided with the Allies from the start, no Argentine food relief would ever have reached Britain, and WC Churchil would have ordered yet another general rice confiscation in Britsih India leading to yet another mass starvation with 4,000,000 deaths in India.
