    One of the running themes in Andor is that of sacrifice. Kino Loy sacrifices his body, Luthen Rael his soul and Mon Mothma her heart. In many ways sacrificing your heart is the hardest choice. Superb acting, in my humble opinion, portraying this. I could watch a series named 'Mon' following the tightrope she has to balance.
    Just started re-watching the series, and find myself enthralled by it.
    I'll almost say the agony of all the other Disney sw has been worth it, so we could get this amazing story telling.

      Yes! I included “sacrifice” in a review for one episode. And I couldn’t agree more.

    • @IsaacKuo

      I know this idea has been going around, but it's just wrong. First and most importantly, Kino Loy doesn't sacrifice anything. He's purely a victim. He has no choice - no agency, so he has no choice whether or not to sacrifice. There was only one way out.
      Second, Mon Mothma is sacrificing her soul, not her heart. Yes, she is sacrificing her own family members, but that's really just a symptom of what she really must sacrifice for the sake of the Rebellion - her soul. Her decency. EVERYTHING.
      But of course you protest ... What about the Mon Mothma we know she becomes in the future? What about the Mon Mothma who fights for the rights of the oppressed? What about the Mon Mothma who refuses to let the Rebel Alliance follow Saw's lead? Oh she'll be there, at least as far as the public persona goes. But it's a front. Mon Mothma has learned from Palpatine. Show the righteous side in public. But in secret? With operatives like Cassian Andor who she can trust will be discreet about it? Whatever it takes. No matter what.

    Mon Mothma in her literal ivory tower juxtaposed in the same episode against Luthen in the bowels of Coruscant is amazing. He talks of his mind being a sunless space and she has a chandelier shaped like a sun above her. Showing how she is doing it correctly as opposed to Luthen. Luthen even gets to see in the final episode how the Rebellion can form without his awful tactics and he still doesn't get it.
    The Rebels episode where she gives the Ghorman Massacre speech is amazing. Genevieve was absolutely amazing and I hope we get more of her.

      That's what I thought at first, but I think Tony's giving us a far more complex Mon Mothma. Maarva's inner light is her love of Ferrix; her love of Cassian ... Ferrix is her family.
      But Mon Mothma is going down Luthen's path ... she will sacrifice her family; her soul; she will sacrifice EVERYTHING for the cause. In fact, she'll go even further than Luthen. She can make her mind a sunless place while also presenting a false impression of the light when necessary to inspire the movement.
      My guess is that Mon Mothma will continue to have a double life after she becomes a public Rebel leader. She can fake Maarva's path of pure light in public, while continuing to use Luthen's dark tactics with her secret operatives (such as Cassian Andor).
      The line I keep coming back to is, "I've learned from Palpatine."

    • @DaringDan
      @DaringDan 2 роки тому +2

      @@IsaacKuo Luthen was so wrapped up in looking for Cassian he didn';t notice that a Rebellion was happening right in front of him and didn't need any of his awful tactics. Tony couldn't have made that more clear. The fighting started and he ran. They're actively showing that Luthen's techniques are wrong. What's happening with Mon is a misdirect. She'll get dirt on the mobster.

    • @IsaacKuo
      @IsaacKuo 2 роки тому +1

      @@DaringDan In all of Mon Mothma's speeches so far, has she ever mentioned love of family like Maarva, or love of her community like Maarva? She proclaims ideals, not a personal love. She proclaims ideals which she expects the Rebels to live up to in public - while flaunting them with her secret operatives.
      But you're correct that the show is showing us that Luthen's techniques are wrong and flawed. He makes a number of outright mistakes, and his most interesting is his choice to gaslight and bully Lonni rather than uplift him. Luthen should have given Lonni hope to cling onto, by telling him others were making the same double life sacrifice. Instead he lied to Lonni, telling him Dedra was wasting time with her investigation of Cassian and Axis.
      The result? While Vel (who knew the truth of the importance of Cassian) did what was necessary to get her info on him to Luthen ASAP, Lonni did NOT. Luthen missed out on an opportunity to easily take out Dedra cleanly.
      Luthen isn't the ideal person for the job. He's just the one who stepped up and did it while others did not.

    • @ringkeister
      @ringkeister 2 роки тому +3

      Great answer, but I don’t think she is sacrificing her family, she is sacrificing her dreams for them and for herself. Luther isn’t wrong and she isn’t right, both approaches are necessary, performed by people with the necessary talent to succeed. I expect Luthen will sacrifice himself to allow Mon to continue her struggle.

  • @sophieamandaleitontoomey9343
    @sophieamandaleitontoomey9343 2 роки тому +4

    I mean it's the theme of sacrifice. What do you sacrifice? And when you're a rebel, it means you give up all hope for a normal life and "kindness, kinship and love."
    It applied fully to Luthen and it applies to Mon Mothma as well. Sooner or later, you give up everything for the rebellion.
    And as we see with Cassian, everything will mean his life.

    Good job with this (as usual). I remember a lot of the development of her character from the EU where this take on her being a badass and, when necessary, ruthless politician and leader was definitely there even as she filled more of a behind the scenes advisory role to Leia. Much of what we’ve seen and are seeing in things like Rebels, Rogue One, and now Andor is very much in keeping with the development of that persona, which never totally loses touch with the peace loving Chandrilan she is at heart (remembering the scene in RoTJ where she references the cost of the intelligence on the second Death Star).

    Andor is a fascinating character study for not only the sacrifices that are required in forming a successful rebellion, but also the sacrifices that individuals are willing to make, even if begrudgingly, for their cause. The overall theme of Rogue One was sacrifice for the cause, and Andor expanded on that beautifully not only for established characters but also for newly introduced characters. But Andor also extends the theme of sacrifice to the antagonists…Dedra, Syril, and other Imperials have also sacrificed for the Empire…their souls, and often unwittingly so. Such is the power of a tyrant.

    The funny thing is that Perrin is so aloof that he probably would confess if he had actually gambled money away. Either way, that excuse is only going to work once. As for Leida, she doesn't have to know she was used; say she respects her beliefs and bam, introductions made. They might even hit it off. Either way, the two don't have to know.

  • @johnmiller7682
    @johnmiller7682 2 роки тому +3

    Another reason for Mon Mothma allowing her daughter to be introduced to Davos son is that it reenforces the ruse of her husband gambling the money away. Without a doubt, the Empire knows who he is. The introduction would make it look like this is some sort of payoff. Which of course, it is. No this is where it gets dark. Mom Mothma can’t have someone like Davos no her business. Sure, he might be someone who could protect her family. But he’s also a serious liability. And someone like him would have no qualms about giving her up to the Empire to protect himself. That means he has to be taken out. and I think this is where Andor and Mon Mothmas connecting starts. I think his first job as a complete member of the rebellion will be to kill Davos.

    I agree that she was not being selfish about introducing her daughter to that family. If the daughter likes this boy and he likes her and eventually this becomes love she will be protected the rest of her life. Many people all over the Galaxy must owe this family many favors and hiding the young couple could be one of them in the future. She probably saw The Godfather and knows how it all works. 😘

    The way Bail Organa is shown at the end of Revenge of the Sith, it makes it look like there's a continuity between his actions even back then, and the Rebel Alliance in ANH. I think Andor is the first media to reject that impression. If there was a Delegation of 2000 at the start, Emperor Palpatine quickly dismantled that resistance to tatters. Mon Mothma perhaps survived by being one of the ones to pretend to recant.
    So what about Bail Organa? He was of course conspicuously absent in season 1. My guess is that he rarely attends the Senate, having already lost faith in its ability to do much of anything. My guess is that he had a falling out with Mon Mothma years prior, seeing her swift recant as a betrayal and previously seeing her sympathies with separatist worlds as suspect. Thus, during season 1 of Andor, Bail is not even on speaking terms with Mon, each being completely unaware of each other's Rebel activities.

      @@STARWARS_FANATIC I expect the reconciliation to be in season 2. Maybe they start off arguing with each other, Bail accusing Mon of selling out and Mon accusing Bail of giving up and hiding on Alderaan. They have the sort of viscerally heated argument that can only come from former friendship.
      Maybe the argument turns when Mon realizes from Bail's passion that he couldn't possibly have truly given up.

    Ferrin's gambling is not a problem with regard to the empire at all. Remember, there are entire planets devoted to gambling in the Empire. There is slavery in the Empire. There are senators bleeding their planets dry for their own comfort. One senator's husband gambling? That's nothing in the Empire. It's just family embarrassment in Mon Mothma's own personal morality, and may be useful to the empire only in that limited context.
    The important point is that it gives the Empire a false trail to follow with regard to the missing money, but that trail will grow cold quickly...it won't cover future money trails.
    Davo mentioned that he already know Perrrin, or knew much of Perrin, and probably thinks that he's also covering Perrin's debts (unless he knows more about the rebellion that we know now). But by tying his family to the Mothma family, he'll surely be obligated to hide their daughter when Mon's activities are uncovered...and he should have the ability to do so. I don't think he'll turn the girl over to the Empire...he knows they offer no guarantees.
