My Dad had visitation rights. He would pick me up and we'd go to White Hen Pantry. He would get me a Star Log, a Matchbox car and a frozen Coke. That was so long ago. I miss him.

It seems like you really loved him and he loved you. Cherish those special memories my friend. In this day and age those simple yet precious moments are far and few between thanks to the double edged sword called a smartphone. I bet you remember just about every matchbox car he bought you and the wonderful smell of white hen!

I used to get Starlog in England. My first issue was no.17 with Battlestar Galactica on the front in 1978, aged 12 yo. I still have many of them still. I h ad a pen pal for a few years in California through the magazine, and ordered a Darh Vader helmet by Don Post Studios, ordered from Fantasy Classics in LA in December 78.
Starlog gave me information that was not avaliable elsewhere.
    Great days indeed.
    Thanks for posting.

Hello. I really like 1999. It was my favourite programme in 1976. It was incredible. The theme tune and opening were great. The episodes had mostly great stories and high production values. Lots of horror stories. Dragons Domain frightened the life out of me.
Please differentiate Series 1 from Series 2 which was far inferior to its predecessor. Almost like a totally different show using the same cast and models.

Gosh I miss my Starlogs. By no means did I have all of them, but I did have lots of them from the 70s - 90s. But sometime in the 90s my wife and I did a big magazine purge. Starlog was not the only magazine I collected, and my wife collected many mags too. We had magazines falling out of our closet! We wanted to avoid the whole "hoarder" situation, so we did a big purge. And I couldn't very well say "We're keeping my Starlogs" when she was giving up a lot of hers. Wouldn't be fair. So out they went. Gosh, i wish i still had them.

I have many, many editions of Starlog including number 1 and the amazing number 7! I had to rebuy number 7 because I cut it to pieces to put the pictures all over my room. I still have Robbie dressed as Sherlock Holmes (from "Holmes and Walston", an unaired TV pilot) haging in my office! I gathered every scifi mag I could for many years! Thanks for this "behind the scenes" presentation. Your show is simply awesome, brother!

Excellent show! I collected Starlog, by subscription,1999 until 2003. But bought it monthly starting at issue 9. I would get a quarter daily from an elderly woman next door, I honestly can't remember her name, to get her a pack of cigarettes from the corner store. That change got me my first issue. Along with a couple comic books. Ah, the memories! Lol. ✌️❤️🙂

Thanks, Dan! I really* appreciate you highlighting this groundbreaking and trend setting publication. This takes me back to the late 1970s when I was an avid Starlog reader! This is what we had before the Internet. Such great memories. One of my best friends owned the first couple of issues that had been published in 1976, including issue one featuring Star Trek. The first issue I ever purchased was the Star Wars one in 1977 featuring the TIE fighter, and X wing fighter on the cover. Another issue that made a huge impression on me was the one in 1979 that featured Alien. The stills from that movie, including the incredible designs like the derelict ship just blew me away. I even sent a letter to the editor which was published! I got a lot of mail from my fellow fans in response to it. My interest started to wane in the early 80s when I moved on to other interests. But for a time this publication played a huge role in my growing up years. It’s such a shame that there are so few physical back issues available. I would love to track down some of my favorites.

I remember getting that first Star Wars issue and reading about this impossible movie coming out in a couple months. This was before any preview trailers or nationwide press. The concept art actually blew my mind. How were they going to realize anything like this on screen? What? I literally was the first to know in my neighborhood and went on endlessly about this amazing impossible science fiction movie that was coming out around my 12th birthday and we had to go see it. I remember us being excited as we took our seats, munching Red Vines that we’d bitten the ends off to make straws out of for our Cokes. Lights dim, the preview for the other big summer release, “The Deep” plays and then that orchestra hit into the fanfare and opening crawl. Then a ship flies over our head followed by the single most astounding sight I’d ever seen: A giant ship in pursuit. A GIANT ship in pursuit. The 5 of us let out an amazed “Whoa!” and told each during intermission we were staying in our seats to watch it again (theaters back then didn’t have such a problem with the kids hanging out as long as we bought more stuff from the concession stand). Saw it 28 times that summer; each time I paid my own way. Best summer of my life.

I got into Starlog and Fantastic Films as a veteran of Famous Monsters of filmland, Film Comment, American Film, Super 8 Filmmaker, and Cinematographer magazines. It's a shame all those hardcopy magazines have seen their day, there was nothing else like them, the smell, being able to actually touch the pages you were reading and the pictures you were looking at, when you held them in your hands they had weight, they were real compared to something that's an electronic copy.

That magazine was the gateway for science fiction and fantasy books, film, music, comics and more that made its own kind of community. Just good stuff!

Another great video. It's like we lived the same childhood. There was no better time to be a sci fi fan than the late 70s - early 80s and Starlog was one of the best part of that time. First coverage of the early Star Trek tv project and then later the Motion Picture, Alien, Battlestar G and of course Empire. Unfortunately I had to give it up when I went off to college as I could barely afford to eat let alone buy a magazine. But the last issue I bought, #61, I brought with me and read it over and over again. I had no idea they were still publishing into the 2000s. Still have all my old issues tucked away somewhere. I'll have to dig them out someday.

Who else here would like Dan to cover 'Whatever Happened to *OMNI* Magazine?' ✋
One of my fave film nods to that sci-fi zine was the nerd bully's face on an OMNI poster in the fun college flick 'Real Genius.'

I agree with the "Omni" request. So many great articles and stories in one magazine.

I used to buy Starlog, Cinefantastique, Mad magazines and other such magazines. I even bought Starlog presents - Cinemagic, The Guide To Fantastic Filmmaking. I had bought large red binders with their name on it from them to contain their magazine issues. I didn't care much for Fangoria magazine though dedicated to horror flicks. I love Sci-fi, fantasy and horror movies, but mostly classic Sci-fi and fantasy movies and TV shows.

I bought the first issue when I was thirteen years old. I didn’t realize at the time it would become such an icon. I continued to buy issues over the years and it always was fun and informative. My usual routine was to walk down to the newsstand next to 5he bus station in my quaint little home town and see if the new issue was out yet. Fantastic Films, Cinefantastique, and Future magazine were all staples (or stapled if you prefer). I also had a bunch of the Star Wars foldout mags that were also posters you could display on the wall. Great memories and fun times. I feel so fortunate to have been at the PERFECT age during that era. It felt like those films were made for me. Thank you!

As a Gen-X’er who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s (born in 1970), I can tell you that Starlog Magazine truly was a lifeline for us hardcore fans. Especially for those of us who grew up in the Midwest burbs. Along with Bantha Tracks, Cinefantastique, Star Wars Monthly Poster and a host of other publications. If it had Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Indy, Blade Runner, etc on the cover, it was like gold!

I was an SF nerd/geek as a young adult. Living out here in the desolation of rural Nebraska. The equivalent of Siberia. Starlog was my lifeline to a world that seemed another universe, to the one I was living in. Still have all my Starlogs (from issue #1 onwards), including Future Life and even some Famous Monsters mags.

Heartbreaking. I had the very first Starlog magazine and had collected quite a large number of issues. Unfortunately, along with many other items I had stored in boxes in the garage, the roof had collapsed and everything destroyed by a lot of water due to heavy rains. So I can feel the pain of that warehouse burning down and losing all those magazines, utterly destroyed. Watching this brings back a lot of fond memories.

Are you unaware of the Starlog stores that existed in the 1990s?
In Fox Valley mall outside of Chicago.
There was a nationwide chain, and they had all kinds of wonderful sci-fi merchandise.

I bought Issue No.01 of Starlog in a newsagent here in Australia in 1977. In those days it took months for such magazines to reach our shores. You could put it on order, but then it wouldn't get delivered to the Newsagents some months. So I started subscribing; and some months it just didn't turn up. Lost in the post. then you'd have to go searching the various "speciality sci-fi bookshops" in the city too find it; or back order another copy. Between 1977 and 2008/9 I managed to collect them all. Most of the specials, and the spin off "Future Life". Then in 2009 it stopped coming in the post. A very sad time. Thanks a lot GFC.

As someone born in 1966, Starlog, Fangoria and a 3rd title I can't remember but dealt with props, creature creations, special effects, etc., were my leisure reads in the late 70s and early 80s.
Now I can watch 20 different YT channels ( and then some) to get the same sort of info. Sooner. But there are trade-offs.
EDIT: CineMagic! That was the 3rd one I was thinking about.
