I just came across a major collection of over 70 issues spanning 1971 to 1991 at a bookstore in Northridge, Ca.
I bought the entire lot for a great price. I'm very happy.
I used to live in England for a short period of time, and I would always look for Empire magazine
Moved house about a month ago and unearthed my only surviving issue of Cinefantastique, which is the ALIEN 3 cover in the thumbnail. Still a great article on the making of that movie.
"Cinefantastique" proved to be the Gold Standard of all of those Magazines. Thanks for the recap.
That hits my in the teenage years. My favorite genre magazines were STARLOG, FANGORIA, the Sci-Fi channel magazine, SFX, and HORRORHOUND.

Cinefantastique was the Rolls Royce to Fangoria's Yugo.
I never stopped collecting CINEFANTASTIQUE, mostly because of the deep dive, in depth information about the films. When the magazine shifted into CFQ, and lost its way, I didn't much care for the thin coverage, and finally gave up on this central magazine. STARLOG was good in the early days, but finally fell into a puff piece mag. FANTASTIC FILMS went good and weird in equal amounts. I kept all the CINEFANTASTIQUEs I had, and look at them as historical documents.
I still have boxes of Cinefex, Starlog, Starburst & Cinefantastique mags in storage. I used to get several comp gaming mags as well (Edge, C & VG, Zzap 64, Mean Machines, Play etc) but chucked most of those although I often still buy Retro Gamer.
I used to get these (and other magazines - Starlog, Cinescape, etc…) on my lunch breaks to have something interesting to read back in the day. Somewhere I have them boxed up.

Starlog printed my complaint letter about ALIEN3. It was a pretty brutal critique
I recently bought the Cinefantastique issue about Salem's Lot from 1979 - love the articles!
Lovely dose of nostalgia here. Used to love Fangoria and some of the other random magazines I was lucky to find back in the day.
I don't have anything as old or as prized as these, but I have plenty of Total Film back issues, with the odd Empire, especially from the 00s or so. I did have a few issues of Flicks, particularly when they briefly became a proper magazine than a freebie collectible, and I think Mark Kermode wrote a column for them. I also have a number of issues of CHUD's short-lived magazine Movie Insider, which was as snarky as you'd expect and are probably utter rubbish.
Oliver. Thanks for this video. I’m a bit older than you and Cinefantastique was always an amazing magazine. I preferred the retrospectives, of which my pride and joy is the issue on “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. As for Cinefex, I used to go to a Comic Store in Toronto and get them every three months. I have issues 1 to 50 inclusive - plus some retrospectives such as “Star Wars” and “2001”. Brings back a lot of memories.
I owned a Starburst magazine once featuring Caroline Munro and Mark Hamill.
Wow! Those Cinefantastique reviewers were really hard to please!! I'm surprised such film snobs wrote stuff for such a genre movie focussed magazine.
They make Halliwell's Film Guide look reasonable and that had some really harsh reviews of classic genre movies.
We had a comics/memorabilia shop called Purple Haze in Plymouth back in the 90s and they had loads of back issues of Cinefantastique, I really wish I'd picked some up now!
One of the reasons why I'm a fan of Roger Ebert's reviews is because he's clearly a fan of science fiction and action/adventure films. His reviews of 2001, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones are perfect examples on how he can enjoy popcorn entertainment as well as films from Martin Scorsese, Orson Welles, and Alfred Hitchcock.
The mag was the best back in the 90s especially their coverage on The X-Files and the season episode by episode review… Great time…
Filmfax had an article on Jaws 3-D around 2008-2009. A lot of discussion on the design of the fictional undersea theme park and why the 3-D didn't turn out better.
Cool video! Here in Belgium (and France), we had (and still have) among others, L'Ecran Fantastique and Mad Movies. Two great and very different sci-fy /fantastic movie magazines.

It looks like the Christopher Reeves Superman movies were his gateway to these awesome magazines. That's how I was with the X-Files.
Ahh, The X-Files, at one time it was must-see television, I couldn’t get enough of the intrigue, the plot arcs, the revelations. Truly one of the best shows on tv.
It did sort of outstay it’s welcome by the end, but those first 5 or 6 seasons were incredibly good. (Lost and Game of Thrones were similarly amazing, compulsive viewing, Lost’s final season was terrible and totally undid all the good work they had been building up to, Game of Thrones rushed it’s ending but despite the anticlimax, and a dodgy final episode, subsequent viewings have made me appreciate the ending a whole lot more)
Any change of getting scans of these? These should be saved for generations to come, since they have such good production quality and in depth information.

I'm guessing Oliver is not interested in them, but Cinefantastique did massive issues on the Star Trek series. They did an episode guide for each season of Next Gen. through Enterprise.
I recently found 2 cinefex binders with the first 25 editions, do you happen to know the approximate value? Are these collectable?

Thanks for showing some love to Cine. I made my first national byline in it covering the Denver sneak of "Blade Runner" and was the LA correspondent for several years in the Eighties. I think that both Cine and Cinefex hold up because Fred Clarke and Don Shay both believed in doing extensive and serious coverage of genre films. This got us into trouble some times. George Lucas let it be known (I understand) that he was seriously pissed when we blew the "I am your Father" moment in "Empire Strikes Back" and suddenly a lot of people wouldn't talk to us. Still, for many lower level productions, the filmmakers appreciated our coverage and gave us full support. It was a dream assignment for a young journalist and gave me the chance to interview people like Max Von Sydow, Christopher Plummer, David Lynch, Ron Howard, Peter Kuran, and many others; as well as hang out on sets and see the nuts and bolts of filmmaking. I think our legacy continues on, sort of, in channels like yours and "Empire" magazine, but there will never be a time like those again.

the horror zines from that period i would loyally read were from the US mostly Film Threat, Fangoria, Gorezone and Deep Red (R.I.P. Chas.) but my absolute favorite was a British UK fanzine called In The Flesh by Steve Court and ran for 11 issues which i recently had a bookbinder combine my complete ITF collection into one nice book

I had one issue of this magazine that I cherished for a long time: it had a cover with all the Batmen up to date (including the animated Batman) with Adam West front and center. They had a summary of each episode of all three seasons of the 60s TV series as well as the first two seasons of the Animated Series. It was great to have some behind the scene of the series as well.
I talked to Michael Biehn at Spooky Empire 2021 and he didn’t seem to remember saying that “ALIENS wouldn’t be topped.” But I did because I totally agree with that.

These were my only source of movie making info and the occasional piece of concept art available at the time other than the Star Wars sketchbooks, even Fangoria (which focused more on Horror) was good when it covered things like Predator and anything with creature work. It was my fuel that eventually lead me to working at ILM, before the internet was much of a thing! Now concept art is just a fountain, but back then it took work to find even a sketch from a production on how things started, in fact I wouldn't buy a magazine unless it covered the design and a making of book was a failure if it only included scenes from the film and not concept art. Thanks again!
Cinefantastique was my favourite magazine back in my teens. Used to travel up to Forbidden Planet in St Giles St in London to buy it or Cinefex of a Saturday about '81 to '84 - a brilliant time for fantastic film.
Print is not dead, but the price is killing me. Yumpin' Yimminie!!! $15.00 seems to be the average. Comics have been over priced for 30 years. Sure the production quality got real high but that caused me to have to weigh financial responsibilities over pulp.
I'm sorry that I don't have high detail on this but I remember that there was this woman back then (1970s-1980s) who ran a business where she would hunt down any rare (or out-of-print) book or magazine issues that you were looking for. You'd mail her a letter asking for what you were looking for and she would mail back a letter telling you "I found them all - if you want them, send back this enclosed invoice with your payment for my services." I believe that I got her information from an classified ad that she placed in the back pages of one of those magazines you're talking about. She found a few graphic novels for me of Mobius art series.
Oliver this video is Electric! I collected most of these magazines here in the US. I had a job delivering Sunday editions of the New York Times. And that’s were a bulk of my money went… Please keep up the Fantastic content…

Fangoria was my go-to back in the day and Cinefantastique a very close second. I think Cin was harder to find than Fang. Love your work Oliver.

I used to really look forward to Cinefantastiques rating panel in each edition, it wasn't just a gimmick it was a genuinely great movie ratings system. I think Judith P. Harris was the only bird amongst the reviewers and i always liked to see what rating she was going to give to the really gory horror films. As for individual editions, the "FORBIDDEN PLANET" one was legendary. Also, the summer 1982 edition of Fantastic Films was perhaps the greatest ever edition of any genre magazine in the last 70 years, where they reviewed: ET, THE THING, POLTERGEIST, STAR TREK 2, TRON, MEGAFORCE, BLADE RUNNER, and quite a few others, that edition was pure gold.
