Reminds me of an animated character from my childhood, Tobor the 8th Man. He was also a robot who was disguised as a human detective. It was a B&W Japanese cartoon from the early sixties, kind of like Astro Boy or Prince Planet. Maybe you could do videos on that Tobor! How cool would THAT be!
For me, there are two movies that stand above the rest when it comes to science fiction in the 1950s: "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and "Forbidden Planet". Both, in my opinion, still stand up quite well today.
Still watch both when they air on regular tv
Well said and I agree. Day is my favorite movie of all time.
“Day” especially for me continues to hold up exceedingly well because it’s not an invasion story, but instead carries a warning from an interstellar emissary. Also, Bernard Herrmann’s score too is still very enjoyable to listen to.
100% agree. These are classics. And I’ll add a personal favorite: The Thing From Another World. I absolutely love that film.
@@McQ14 Even the low budget cheesy bad acting ones have their own special charm and can be appreciated (usually at least) on some level. I just remember that even the worst movies took a lot of effort to get made. Even "Plan 9 From Outer Space"!
... when we were kids, we used to stomp on beer cans so they would clamp to the bottom of our shoes, then we'd walk around on the sidewalk clanking just like TOBOR !
Back when beer cans were made of steel.
According to Dan your mother was oppressed what a 🤡
Hahaha. Awesome!
I know some folks who are going to love this one. They are big time TOBAR fans.
I don't remember ever seeing this movie, and I've seen a lot of the sci fi 50s movies. Glad that the prop is intact and in the hands of a collector.
Dan, you might want to consider an episode about the Westinghouse Electric Corporation's "Elektro" robot from the 1939 World's Fair. It now resides in Mansfield, Ohio. Very interesting history.
That one looks related to Gort!
Dominatrix dungeon….”How Cool Is That?!!!” Hahaha
LOL 😂
Tobor was one of my favorite movie Robots, I love this movie when I was a kid. Thank you Dan' I wish it was a production model kit of him.
Oooh, nice video at the end of a workday!
Maybe it's me, but TOBOR's eyes remind me a bit of the robot from 'Saturn 3', Hector.
Me too on that
no matter my mood these video always make me feel better. they're lightheaded, family friendly, well researched and told with the enthusiasm of a happy teenager.
I love watching those old black & white sci-fi moves. I play them EVERY weekend. I’ll be outside doing some work while the movies play on the TV in the garage. I often walk by a see a scene, then sit down and watch a few minutes of it )while sitting in front of a fan to cool off)…then go do some more chores, then sit down again, repeat and repeat. Love those days…
I haven't seen Tobor since it was on Science Fiction Theater in the 70s. Thanks for giving it an overview.
Hey, my pleasure :-)
THEM was always one of my favorite B-flicks.
Especially since it had an open ending.
I love 1950’s sci fi movies but I’ve never seen this movie. I’ve got to find it somewhere. Another great story Dan.
It’s available to watch here on YT.
There was also Tobor the 8th Man black & white cartoon in the 1960s. That will NEVER EVER be repeated on tv again, like Supercar, Fireball XL5, Space Angel & Gigantor of the 1960s.
Fireball XL5, now THAT brings back memories ☺️
8th Man is on UA-cam now. Look for the Japanese versions, much better stories, they edited the American version and changed the storylines in the dubbing to make it less violent. Try searching "8マン" for results.
I love 1950s B-movies!
I haven't seen this movies since I was a kid -- I think I'll give it another viewing!
I remember Tobor, the Eight Man from the 1960s.
Me too! I watched that first on TV as a kid before I ever saw this movie.
Speaking of Robots! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do Saturn 3! I am suprised you have not hit it yet! Thansk! Love your stuff.
Saturn 3.
@@billmiller2522 HA! You are so right. Thanks. LOL - Speeeling correctamicated.
Good fun. This channel is. -yoda
Haha :-) thanks
Excellent! Love this dude! 👏👏👏
Thanks :-) more to come, stay tuned
I remember as a kid in Rochester, New York going to Saturday afternoon films and this was one of them. I have to say I totally forgot about this movie and this robot until you brought it back up Dan. Thank you sir.
I remember watching this one Sunday afternoon back in the mid 1960's on a tiny black a white tv my parents had.
Next week all the boys were stamping around the school playground with our arms out in front of us shouting "i am a robot"! In that robot voice all kids use.
Nothing compares to those old b&w SCI-FI movies of that classic era.
Can you do an episode on Invasion of the Saucer Men someday?
Yes! I’ve requested it to be shown on “Son of Svengoolie” but nothing has happened. An early Frank Gorshin! One of my favorite sci-fi alien movies.
I hadn’t heard of Tobor until just a few years ago . Was surprised there was more than one movie
I like _The Brain from the Planet Arous_ (1957).
What happened to the Metaluna Mutant from This Island Earth 1955?
That's a good question I'll take a look :-)
Congrats on the channels growth. Almost 100K!
Thanks, Dan. I'm glad to hear he (TOBAR) was saved.
And remember, TOBAR is RABOT spelled backwards!
Dear Mr. Monroe,
I have 1 thing to interject KEEP IT UP! FINE SHOW!👍👍🎥🎥🎬
1958. 8 years old. At my cousin's house. Got to see most of Tobar... until my mother came to pick me up. And she wouldn't let me stay to see the end. I was mad! Never saw it again... until about a year ago. I think I found it on UA-cam! At 72 years old, I was so excited! Finally, after 65 years... I got to see the end! Awesome! Good to know Tobar is OK. Thanks, Dan!👍
✅✅✅
Love your vids Dan, I'm 40 but was brought up watching these shows with my dad, lost in space, time tunnel, land of the giants, etc. Your vids are fun and informative 👍 love from Scotland 🎉 recently watched TOBOR on creature features youtube chan
I wonder if Fred Barton was the guy I met at the Chiller Theatre Expo in April 2024. The person I met says he knows you and showed me a picture of his B9 ROBOT.
The things Tobor has seen cannot be unseen.
"That's robot backwards". Well, it's only taken me 56 years to realise that.
Hi Dan. I agree. A talking Tobor would not have worked. I did love the warm tone it emitted, and it even changed with its emotions. Brilliant move.
Starlog magazine (#1, I think), reported that the crated Tobor was sold to a junk shop that put him outside the shop, as a draw. A few weeks later he was stolen, and so, disappeared. Good to know he's accounted for.
Tobor was a recurring movie on Family Classics with Frazier Thomas on WGN Chicago back in the 60's.
They pick up Tobor from the dungeon and he's like "You have no idea what I've seen..."
😅🤣😂
Thanks Dan fantastic & cool as ever! Roger Corman RIP
Fred Barton made 75% of my B9 robot. FANTASTIC work. I highly recommend him!!!
Thanks for doing Tobor. It's a great video. Really appreciate this one. I saw this film and "When Worlds Collide" about 100 times each when I was a kid. Fifties Sci-fi was definitely cool to grow up with. Thanks again.
What Happened to My Favorite Martian Space Ship?
Give me the 1950s attitude to the male/female roles than in 2024 it's What IS a woman.
If anything needs mocking it's what passes as culture in 2024
Brilliant! That's the only adjective I can come up with for this video, Dan. Just Brilliant. So glad to learn that Tobor survived to the present day. Speaking of Republic Robots you showed a glimpse of the robot from _Mysterious Doctor Satan_ otherwise known as the "Republic Pictures Water Heater Robot" that also appeared in _Zombies of the Stratosphere._ I always thought that Tobor was a descendant of good old "Water Heater".
One of those great movies that, as a kid, I would catch on the Saturday Creature Feature shows!
Hi Dan, always enjoy your shows, thank you. My question is - do you know if the 1963 animated series Tobor the 8th Man had any influence or connection to Tobor The Great ?
I would love to see a lengthy retrospective of the top 50 Sci-Fi movies (space/robot) video! And what about Electro, G.O.G & Colossus The Forbin Project???!!
I watched a bit of "Here comes Tobor" on a site called Dreams and Bones over twenty years ago. It was one of the first videos I would ever watch on line. This was before UA-cam and high speed Internet, so watching an actual video on line was a novelty back then.
Love those 1950s Sci Fi movies no matter how bad they were made. Thanks for letting us know what happened to Tobor The Great. Your tops Dan. 👍
Congratulations on another very informative video.
Love 50s movies, especially THEM.
This island Earth and of course Forbidden Planet.
The lead actor, Charles Drake, later portrayed Commodore Stocker in Star Trek’s S2 episode “The Deadly Years”.
Thanks for this one Dan . Got a question , are you familiar with Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot ? If so would love to see a video on it .
Loved that show as a kid
AAAAHHHH, my island of peace & sanity bringing me all the fun stuff I have missed growing up
Isn't it great to relive all the cool memories :-)? That's why I love doing this so much
Dan, another great video! I hope you have Space 1999 in the pipeline! I along with some others would love to see you do that!
Absolute great as a kid I love this movie thank you very much for the update God bless
When that poor robot was in the sex dungeon he lost his 50's innocence. And that's kind of sad.
"...we would be here all day."
I'll make the time!
I remember this movie from the old Creature Features days of Saturday afternoon sci-fi/horror scholock. I'm going to have to see where I can see it again on some streaming service.
I'd never heard of Tobor until today. Thanks!
Hi Dan, great channel!
What ever happened to the Cavorite Sphere in “First Men in the Moon”
Cheers
Don't forget "The 8th Man" animated series, a cyborg who went by "TOBOR"...
He was a robot. Funny thing about that, when he went by Mr Tobor the Detective (in the US dubbed episodes) he shape shifted to look exactly like the murdered Special Agent Brady, but no one seemed to notice.
Actually, never heard of Tobor the Great, then got thinking about an old children's series from Japan called Johnny Sokko and his flying robot. It was about a child having control over a giant robot which he used to help defend the Earth from an alien invasion I think I watched it in the late 60s early 70s
Enjoyed your Tobor review immensely Dan, and as huge sci-fi and classic monster fans we'd never seen the movie. Fixed that tonight with a big bowl of popcorn, and now you can count us as Tobor fans too. Keep up the great work Dan, your channel keeps us watching and enjoying all this classic goodness!
An intriguing subject you could cover would be the 1950’s motion picture The Colossus Of New York. Both the storyline of the film as well as the technical aspects of it are quite unusual to say the least. It is a bizarre, dark film in ways.
Yeah, a great movie that was definitely a step above!👍👍
Nice, Dan. I love to hit the bed with a classic Sci-Fi. Movies like Tobor don't get high marks as most were cheaply produce, but that also gives them their charm...and I wasn't even born in the fifties.
Dan Monroe here, talking about Cinema, Songs, and Sci-Fi!
Man, these episodes, this episode in particular is what I would call a “nerd litmus test” and I don’t mean that in a totally negative way. I used that tag line on the old original Dune movie. If I talked to someone I suspected could be a nerd like me, then knowing Dune sealed the deal. I would say the same would go for old 50s robot movies. Keep up the good work!!
Nilbog is Goblin spelled backwards!!! Dan, you might consider covering "Troll 2" as a topic of a future video
Yeah that's a good idea. I'll add it to the list :-)
I enjoyed it. ✌️🤠
An excellent summation of the 50s and overview of Tobor.
Thanks Dan!
I can't believe I never seen this one, I gotta get on that!
Can be seen in its entirety on YT.
JOHNNY SOKKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT
from 1967-1968 TV series. Plz do a video about the series😁.
I've never seen that but I will definitely take a look :-)
@@MoviesMusicMonsters Growing up/childhood/little boy/always watched it/it was a Japanese/dubbed English language TV show of a Giant Robot controlled by a little boy belonging to a secret organization fighting evil/monsters😁.
I love old Sci-fi films and I've never heard of this one. I'm glad I saw this video.
What ever happened to the movie that Tom Hanks was supposed to create and star in of the Mattel toy action figure " Major Matt Mason"? 15:48
Loved this episode, Dan! I had never heard of this film, but will definitely watch it soon. Please keep discussing the best 1950s SF films.
Never heard of this until you mentioned it.
Of course this was 20ish years ahead of my time.
I looked it up and the full movie is on UA-cam. Watched it, loved it.
I love any movie or tv show that has robots.
Thanks Dan until I found your channel I never knew some of these movies existed.
There's a reason they called it the nifty fifties.
Dan -- Hate to tell you this but it's "ChatSworth". Lucille Ball used to live in that area. On the other side of the Santa Susana Pass, in Simi Valley, was Corriganville, started by stuntman, "Crash" Corrigan.
I'm 54...and love sci-fi and such. How have I never even heard of this that I can recall? Innnnteresting! Thanks 🙂 OH...how about that movie form the 50s..."THEM", the giant ants one!?
GOOD MOVIE
I love your channel and I'm a subscriber! Just wanted to point out that the Lost In Space robot was actually Robot Model B-9 (Benign), Class YM-3, Environmental Control Robot. I always thought B-9 was very clever. RIBBIT @Dan Monroe!!!!
Great video! I’d love to see a video on 1950s makeup artist Harry Thomas. He created the monsters for Frankenstein’s Daughter, Killers from Space, The Unearthly, Cat Women of the Moon, Superman meets the Molemen and many more. Keep up the great work.
Haven't seen it but I believe I had a toy remote control that had the name Tobor it was painted black I believe.
I've never seen this film. I need to get the blu-ray and check it out.
Oh Tobor, the things he has seen.
I grew up mostly in the late 60's but the 50's must have been a great time for kids!
Another outstanding video, Dan! Background info about Tobor has always been a bit of a mystery for me but you filled in all the blanks. Thank you!
I would watch one of those old b movies any day of the week over any what is called critically acclaimed film.
but...but...the message!
Love your videos, and the info you give. Love watching these movies growing up. Please keep the videos coming. Also thank you
Hey Dan. I just saw this movie about two weeks ago. A great blast from the past. Have fun!!!
Wonder who was paying for the storage all that time? That’s not cheap.
Bob Burns! A cameo but a welcome one.
Yay!! Thanks Dan!!
Thanks :-) love the cat in your avatar by the way :-)
@@MoviesMusicMonsters Thank you!! That's our previous cat Jasper. Big lovable Maine Coon.
Always well done, thanks
As a fan of the old SiFi movies, how in the world have I never heard of TOBOR? Watching it now...
Thanks, Dan, for all you do. You are the world's authority on these period cultural classics. What a fun era it was to live in. I did and that's why I view your work as vitally important for boomers like me and subsequent generations to enjoy. It was a wonderful time in American moviemaking. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Dan, Your content just keeps getting better and better. Love it
Another great video! Thanks Dan! I gotta get that bluray!
