To mark the first test firing of Bloodhound SSC's hybrid rocket, here's a closer look at what it will take to push a car to a whopping 1,000 mph. The attempt will take place at Hakskeen Pan in South Africa in 2014.

DGOfTheCentury Ha good one but nope, according to relativity everyone else would age faster rather than it effect his relative time quantum. I always liked the Carl Sagan version, where he explained that it would take something like 40 light years to travel to and back from the center of our galaxy assuming one could reach light speed. But when said voyager returned home 40 years later, 30,000 years would have lapsed on earth. Now that is something to wrap your head around. Light speed doesn't sound so cool without the things you care about the most going with you, now does it? What we need to ponder is not physical speed because of such draw backs, but how to fold space and time into a worm hole for distant travel, which should effectively rule out the relative time consequences. Smoke on that one for a minute.

They've built a rocket car before. It broke the speed of sound on land back in like 95' or 96'. Was called the Thrust SSC if i remember correctly.

You might also wreck the car. It isn't built to take a hit like "road-worthy" cars, and at those speeds, a human body would do some damage. All it would take is to throw off the driver for a fraction of a second, and make it leave the road. The car might achieve liftoff trying to offroad.
I like the representation of the steering wheel motion... surely even this amount of movement would send you into an uncontrollable spin out.

+SniperPanda512 Firstly they chose a flat desert, secondly this thing has downforce to hold it, well, down.
Well yeah, downforce will help stay on the ground, but if it hits like a rock, I'm pretty sure it will at least jump a little.
Get Roasted It won't needs F1 level of downforce, but still need enough of it to conquer uneven surface. I suppose those engineers are smart enough to do their maths and find out the right combination.
And the speed of this particular vehicle has very little to do with "grip". It's not propelled by the wheels scrubbing the ground, nor does it slow down by brakes on the wheels.
Bill CZY well yeah the track would be clean, but there is a possibility that there may be like a small rock the size of someone's hand, left out. But I'm not saying it will happen, just possibly, since the distance to cover is very large

This video is now slightly out of date as the Cosworth F1 race car engine planned to be the fuel pump for the rocket was found not to be up to the job. It has been replaced by a one off special built by Jaguar.
The Cosworth petrol engine has been replaced with a Supercharged Jaguar Type R engine for the H2O2 pump.
Why did they do that?

Check out the recent in depth look at the vehicle's construction on the Chris Harris On Cars channel. They're making an attempt this year and also next year. The Cosworth engine has been tossed in favor of a blueprinted dry sump Jag F-Type engine to serve as the "fuel pump" more or less.
This year's attempt in September will be to break the current 700+ MPH land speed record. The run next year will be to reach 1,000 MPH.
Can't wait to see this. Ana amazing feat of engineering. I was turned onto this by Stefan Marjoram and it is going to be awasome.

Now it is set for late 2015 or early 2016... surprisingly enough an engineering task this complex and ambitious is prone to many major set backs.

@Techno It uses a combustion engine, its a CAR, it doesn't specify how an engine is needed, it just says (Keyword) "powered" by one, which this is, it uses a Combustion engine in order to push the oxidizer and fuel through the rocket engine, which in turns thrusts it forwards. I know its a two year old comment, but this idiocy is one of the reason the planet is doomed to fall to retardation.
They really need to hurry up and finish building this dam thing and get it to the states for testing, we have all been waiting for YEARS to see this thing have a go !

Cool visuals :-) Though mistakes where made. They are not using a Cosworth engine to pump the oxidizer, they where supposed to though. Instead they will be using a 550bhp supercharged V8 from Jaguar. Just Imagine an engine so powerful that a mere pump needs 550bhp just make sure it will keep up! Fantastic!

When the sound was audible it was still subsonic. If you watched the whole thing, you saw that, at the end, the rocket kicked in, and it was silent approaching with a large bang following the moment it passes the camera.

To all the people saying that this is fake, it's not and it's actually going to be attempted when the project finishes. This video is an an animated proposal of what the car would look like going at this speed. People still don't know if it will really reach 1000mph but it will be attempted in a desert. did you watch the video? the piston engine is just there to drive the fuel pump. this thing has a rocket engine to give thrust.

Yep, and from what I remember from the initial interview when this plan was released, they said the engine that ONLY pumps fuel in this car, is equally powerful to a F1 car engine :) So you have about umm... 800hp engine to pump your fuel.... modest :D

The F1 rocket engine used in the Saturn first stage had a 55,000 HP turbine driving the fuel pump...and there were five F1 engines on the rocket

if you bothered reading the description you would see that it has it first test ride in south afrika, 2014. This is clearly just a animation as you can see, and the 1000mph is a prediction.

I'm still astounded by the fact that the v8 is just a giant pump.
That's (almost) nothing, that F1 engine drives a pump which works a hydrogen peroxide rocket. In the Saturn V they used a hydrogen peroxide rocket (sort of) as the pump for the main rocket it could drain an Olympic size swimming pool in two and half minutes - but it pumped liquid oxygen and kerosene. And the Saturn V had five of them on the first stage. Pumping fuel into rockets needs lots of power (and minimal weight) to make truly amazing amounts of power. This one is actually relatively small as far as rockets go. But it is controllable, which really matters when you have a man strapped to it.

He is already immortal, the first (and so far only) man to have driven a supersonic car, and he's going to do it again, and in doing so raise the land speed record by the greatest amount, both absolute AND relative, ever in the history of the record. The 700hp provided by this V8 pales in comparison to the 1000s of hp required by fuel and oxidizer pumps in liquid fueled rockets. Those use a gas turbine driven by a fuel/oxidizer fed burner. But still this is neat stuff to put a Cosworth engine on fuel pump duty.

It's a massive science project and the spin off's are incredible, they are also going around schools talking to kids of all ages about different propulsion systems and the technology behind them, it's actually a really impressive project and the people involve really do know what they are doing.

Now, that is a hybrid car I'd buy.
1000 mph would be almost twice the speed of sound speed which is Mach 2. I don't know but when you drive at already say 250 mph, when you have wind conditions it can be pretty bad. I can't imagine such a speed on a vehicle driving that fast, not only you have thermodynamics rules and there is also wind shear on a road which has never been solved. In other words the car would not be able to stay on the road at such a speed even if the road was flat without bump. It's not feasible in pure terms of physics.
Well the current record is 763.04mph (mach 1.02), and that was set almost 20 years ago. 1000mph isn't out of the question, and if you run the numbers at the 0.01 level of significance, physics certainly allows those speeds given the proper conditions and equipment. Also, the speed of sound is ~760mph, so 1,000mph is actually only about mach 1.32.
Pete Buxton You made it possible if you read again what you wrote :P Of course 1 mile is 1.609 km so that's not mach 2 but close enough, by 400 km/h. With computerized micro-adjustments in hydraulics at that speed I highly doubt the car would be able to stick to the road even with good aerodynamics as close as a missle. This project sounds exciting though and challenging. Good luck to the ones who will embrace it.

idk why people say this is useless. It is all about the challenge. Pushing to make records. Why climb a mountain when all you are going to do is climb back down? It is for the self achievement for a lot of people. I think making a 1,000 mph car is a huge achievement.

My 2p's worth is that car is a derivation of carriage - and they had to be pulled by horses - certainly not driven through the axle by an internal combustion engine!! - But as I say it's not important, it's an incredibly ambitious project (whatever you want to call it) in the spirit of pushing boundaries and good luck to them.
