      Dierre Sanders thank you. I actually took a trip to Gary when I was living in chicago. I’m a big Jackson 5 fan so that’s what pulled me there. I loved seeing the home the Jackson’s grew up in. And it was a small yet cozy, welcoming city. I went to a diner there and everyone felt like family

    Thank you for this video! I've fallen in love with this city since last summer and have already been back twice (probaby one or two more times this year even). I'm really looking into moving to this city after I finish with nursing school here in Florida. I came for the winter too, so I'm kind of aware of how cold it can get (your Spring weather is apparently my brutal winters here haha). And I really love the public transportation system they have here. It's reliable and something we don't have down south. I love this city so much. Hopefully I can move here!

    My husband & I grew up in Chicago, married for 35yrs (old school)..Chicago has changed dramatically since we moved to the beautiful suburbs. We both did the beaches & Chicago Cubs & many restaurants. We live 35 miles out of downtown now, strange thing is: All the kids in our small town, moved to Chicago! Something to be said...Chicago is Awesome!

    I have lived in Chicago for 37 years. The Winters here are BRUTAL COLD. Yes the City is cleaner than NY. People are friendlier, and we have the best PIZZA & HOTDOGS in the World!. If you live in bad neighborhood you going to experience crime sooner or later. Yes Indiana is only a 40 minute drive south.Yes the racial divide is obvious. The Club Scene is decent but it depends more so on the people who are there. Chicago has a Serious Omage too Soulful Blues music and Old School House Music. If it doesn't got Soul in it it's not worth your ear time. A 1100.00 a month 2 bed room on north side is 800.00 on the south side. You have to picky our spots carefully. Free Parking is a pain to find!!! But you will find in some of best friends here to grow up with !

    • @CassWs-useless-opinions
      @CassWs-useless-opinions 9 років тому

      Wait a minute.... is Indiana being a 40 minute drive to the south listed as a good thing or a bad thing?
      ;) Just teasing since you listed it next to the crime thing and i'm from there.... I knew what you meant! :)

    • @hotmasked1
      @hotmasked1 9 років тому +5

      Yes Northwest Indiana is on a 40 min drive south from Chicago Loop and overall a good, friendly,cozy and quiet place to live. The good spots are South Hammond (passed 159th street) Munster, Sherrilleville, Merriville, the Bad spots Area's are North Hammond, Gary, and East Chicago. It can be a good thing if you work in Chicago and Live in Northwest Indiana. You take a 40 min South Shore Metra train into the Chicago Loop known as the south shore train. The advantage for Chicago's workers to live in Indiana is more HOUSE for your $. You can save up to 45 % on the cost of your home. Everything cost less and taxes are also less. Much less crime and peace and quiet. (good to raise a family) The advantage to Chicago is the convenience factor with all the trains. But you will Pay 45%-60% more for a house in Chicago and deal with much crime.

Myself and my best friend are moving to Chicago in July of this year, and were trying to prepare as much as possible and your video was one of the most helpful because it's geared towards young professional/working class people.

    I was born and raised in Chicago, and had lived there until I moved to Los Angeles in 2006. Back when you published this video you mentioned that you had only lived in Chicago for a little over a year. I think for the short period of time you lived there you gave a perfect description of the City of Chicago; from how clean it is to how racially divided the city really is.....Nice work overall!

    Like +King C I, too, am amazed at how accurate you are with your interpretation of the Chicago experience. I was born and raised here and have traveled abroad for many years now and I still think it's the GREATEST city in the world! Your apartment hunting and neighborhood assessments (I'm a Hyde Parker myself) were definitely on point! Another stand out neighborhood is OLD TOWN, though small, it offers so much to do within it's 'whatever' mile radius! Oh...and thank you for touching on the segregation and violence issues! Most people don't talk about these issues. The segregation is a product of education and pricing! Discriminatory to say the least but, all in all, Good stuff!

    Thanks for posting this video. Im from Minneapolis, MN and Im graduating from college in 2014. Its a huge goal of mine to move to Chicago. I recently visited the city in 2013 and just loved it but Ive been researching Chicago for a long time. Im looking for jobs in marketing or insurance. I was nervous about crime but your made me feel better and I felt safe during my trip. The only thing about the weather that I hate is the wind. It nearly blew me off my feet when I was there. I have been to NYC and I would rather live in Chicago because it felt like a more reasonably priced and less intimidating city than NYC. I cross checked the COL in a COL calculator and Chicago wasn't that much
    than Minneapolis. What also attracts me to Chicago is that its in the Midwest. I felt like I was in Minneapolis when I was walking around.

      ericj305. I have not. I'm still trying but the big obstacle I'm having is that I can't find a job. I apply for a job that I feel I'm qualified for and it will even say in the job description something like only a bachelor's degree is required and when I apply I get a rejection email. I have had phone interviews with companies but nothing beyond that and again I'm applying. for jobs that state in description a a college degree is required but I get rejected so im beginning to think there's something wired going on with its job market but I'm still trying to move there.

    I see Chicago has not changed much since I left there over a decade ago. Very good and accurate description of Chicago. I left because I could not take the cold and the pronounced segregation. Its probably starting to get much cooler now. Stay warm and may all your dreams come true there!

      You left because of the pronounced segregation???? 😂 come lady, who are you kidding? You live where you want to live, no one puts a gun to your head and force you to live somewhere and someone has the advantage of living where they want because they worked hard to do it and they reap the benefits of bettering yourself..... don't give us the crap that Chicago is "segregated" because the "white man" forced the blacks to the south side, if that's what you're implying subtly by your comment.

    • @PC4USE1
      @PC4USE1 5 років тому +1

      I was born and raised in Chicago.The racial divide is less now than it was then because the only neighborhoods where Blacks and Whites interacted was Hyde Park and the village of Oak Park. I as a white would not dare go into a black neighborhood and blacks would not come into white neighborhoods.There were even tensions among white ethnic groups,too.It is not paradise now but is so much better than the 1960s and 1970s.

    2 beds for $1,100 is cool. I'm in the south loop and I'm paying $1,725 for a 2 bedroom. I can agree with what you said. I would probably stress more the expense of owning a car here. Parking is crazy. Plus I would also mention the smoking. I feel like I cant walk 3 blocks in the city without getting smoke blown in my face.

    this can be a really hard city, especially if you're having a hard time finding a job and making money, that's probably why there's so many people originally from here that have moved elsewhere, that's why you'll find Bears, Bulls and Cubs fans all over the United states.

    I grew up in Chicago and am a proud graduate of Hales Franciscan and Loyola. My main reasons for leaving and not ever wanted to come back is because of the cold weather, the police, the corruption, and somehow the city always seemed "sooty". When my friends graduated from college we all found that it was nearly impossible to get a decent place to live because it was simply too expensive and still is. We all scattered to other parts of the world in the country. I still have family in Chicago and they comment on how hard it is to get ahead; that you just can't seem to do any better the matter how hard you try. I distinctly look at going to the currency exchanges there because there is a culture on the south and west side that is sort of anti-into that. In other words, the 1st instinct is to go to the currency exchange to cash a check and pay that extra fee rather than do online banking. Many of the Chicago suburbs were racially segregated and there was always a level of racial violence. What everyone is shocked about Chicago Police Department is really old news if you live in Chicago you grow up there. This is because of the growing separation of your economic classes. When you look at the apartments on Lakeshore Drive you see that many of them are "gated communities" and there is a reason for that. Do not get me wrong in that the a lot of people, millions of them, who think Chicago is a pretty good place to live and in fact it is not that bad. I would prefer Chicago over New York City and I even prefer Chicago over Atlanta. However, it is a city in decline. If you grew up at another earlier time you would understand the culture of shopping at Carson Pieri Scott, or Wiebolts, or Marshall Field's compared to what the downtown looks like right now. 12th and Roosevelt was a much more vibrant area than it is now. The problem is that the current mayor is having is very typical of that separation between rich and poor; which was always there. My advice is to enjoy Chicago for what you can learn and then find a place a lot more boring and for which you can comfortably raise kids. I prefer the schools in Fairfax County Virginia than Chicago Board of Education by a longshot.

    Hello. My name is Emilia Pasek and I have lived in Chicago my entire life. My dads old neighborhood was actually Logan square. Your views on Chicago r pretty true. Although the homicides mainly r on the south side and the racial situation is getting better. My school is a great example of that. Still the landlord thing is true. My dads a real estate agent and landlords won't let you rent out a place unless u have good credit and stable job

    Just wanted to say, good video, but I had some points to make. First thing, University of Chicago is on the South Side. It is in or near the Hyde Park neighborhood, there is also Chicago State University on 95th Street near the Dan Ryan Expressway. Secondly, I don't know what dance clubs you have been going to in Chicago, but you've been going to the wrong ones. Chicago is the BIRTHPLACE of House Music and there are MANY House clubs in Chicago. Have you been to Green Dolphin Street, Berlin, Neo, etc. Granted, clubbing in Chicago isn't the same as it was back in the 80's and 90's, but you can find a LOT of places to party in Chicago. Just pick up a Chicago Reader newspaper (it is free) and check out their entertainment section. Third, I found a lot of people in Chicago to be not as friendly as you say, they are rude and have been for years. They cut you off in traffic, they block the el doors sometimes so you cannot get on the train, and they don't look where they are goinq when they walk down the street. I lived in Chicago for five years and couldn't find to fit my colllege education. I kept Getting jobs that offered me no more than 7.50 an hour. Trust me, I looked. Chicago was one of the biggest mistakes I made in my life. Decent city to visit, but not live sec days a week in.
