    Nice short video, but loaded with information. Well done. Really enjoyed it.
    Definitely think you should make many more videos on this specific bonsai. Not many local growers know how to grow them successfully.
    With regards to the flowering buds. Since they can flower over a period of several weeks, will it be better to reduce the flowering time. If so how would you do it?
    Any suggestion on what to do to get the most flowers opening at the same time.
    Great video and topic.

      Thank you very much Stephen. I shall certainly try to feature Satsuki more in future videos if it will be of interest to local subscribers.
      I’m aware of various strategies for reducing the energy depletion caused by flowering. I’m not sure how effective they all are. That said I make a point of pinching the pistil out as soon as the flower has faded to avoid it being developed as a seed pod - which definitely requires a lot of resources. I do reduce the number of buds, you may notice at the tip of each branchlet on this tree there is only one flower bud.
      I’m not sure if there is a way to manipulate flowering in unison. Not all flowers will open at once but there will be peak flowering. Satsuki has a very good flowering habit clearly as I’ve always found mine flower profusely.
      Good fertilising now in autumn is very important to set up the buds for spring and provide the resources the tree will need. I should imagine this is the most important step. After flowering, the post flowering work is very important in preparing the tree for the next flowering set.
      You will note I did the bare essentially pruning, pruning now will eliminate flower buds.

    Wonderful video, clean, clear and to the point, and spectacular satsuki! Quick question Terry, when doing a big cut of a thick satsuki branch (say 1 to 2 cms in diameter) reducing its length in half or more to obtain budding at the point of cut...what time of year would do such a cutting (right after winter dormancy, spring, fall)?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  Рік тому +2

      Thank you so much Victor. I would do that sort of work after flowering, late spring. This is when the tree goes from flowering to foliage development. This would be the absolute best time. However bear in mind these are shrubs so there may be some flexibility there.

    Hi Terry, how often do you repot azaleas?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  Рік тому

      Good question Alberto. It would depend on the growing medium it’s in and the development of the tree. Every 2 years is good for younger plants as it will stimulate development but long intervals would be better for older plants.

    I acquired a kaho mid winter and previous owner did not remove set flower buds in hopes of a nice show next season. Can I safely remove buds in winter to prevent flowering. I’d like to focus on growth instead of show

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  7 місяців тому

      Hi Tyler. Thanks for the message. You can certainly remove flower buds but I think the real savings in energy are from not allowing the flowers to set seed.

    Hi Terry. I have lost some big branches of my 30 year old azalea. I am removing all the flowers this year to build up the strength again. I have a few azaleas with the same problem. What would be the reason ? They always flowered abundantly feed them with your teabag fertilizer. I have not changed anything els. Please help.

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  Рік тому

      I am not sure but you need to remember that azalea are shrubs and not trees. This means that throwing an old branch is not something which should not be too unexpected. The plant may decide to rather push young juvenile growth instead of keeping the branch growing.
      I personally do not believe in removing the flowers to save energy as the plant wants to flower and will simply make more flowers. However it’s important to remove the spent flower as soon as possible.
      It is hard to say why the branches might be dying, id need more information to have a better idea.

      Sometimes such drastic measures are required. Just remember to clean the edges of the cut well and seal with a good sealer as Satsuki don’t heal easily, as I’m sure you’re already aware.

    Hello, thus was really useful, but what fertiliser did you use and how much?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  Рік тому

      Hi Jennifer. This will depend on the time of year. In autumn it is good to use something which will promote flowering. This is going to be a chemical fertilizer. I use BonsaiBoost, which is canola cake fertilizer for the rest of the year: www.bonsaitree.co.za/collections/fertilizers-and-baskets/products/bonsaiboost-organic-bonsai-fertilizer-retail-pack
