      I know how you feel man, stories of my father's cars and him racing is what got me wrenching back in the day, but he never would work on anything with me or watch me race. Sucks when all you want to do is hang out with your dad and work on stuff but he's too much of an asshole to bother.

    You are headed in the right direction with the 4.10s and stall converter. The TFS1 cam really doesn’t start to come in strong until around 3000 RPM. With a stock AOD and 2.73s, this came sometimes be an issue if you find yourself below that in too high of a gear and can’t get it to downshift

    Keep up the vids. It helps the guys like me get motivated to work on my car. The 4.10’s were one of the first mods done after h-pipe and mufflers. Made big difference right away. Then came a b&m transpak shift kit with thunderbird OD “A” mod which kept OD engaged at higher torque loads and high speed. This made my AOD spin 1st ,2nd and 3rd. Had loads of fun with that set up for a few years. Then came the swap to a Tremec. Some times I still miss the AOD.

      I do that with my hci fox all the time, car really doesnt come alive until 3-4k and the aod wants to shift into 3rd at like 4800. Needs a manual valve body and converter but the 1-2-1 gets the job done for now😎

      Hopefully it blows that pos up and you can replace it with something better 🦊

    • @waynebollentin989
      @waynebollentin989 5 років тому +1

      That's great except for the part where you shift at 6500. Unless it has heads, cam, intake, etc it's pointless. With the factory ECU it's not going past 6250 either unless it's has a carb, has an rpm extender for the EFI or aftermarket ECU.
      You could also waste money on a manual valve body with brake and not have to worry about dropping it back down to low. I say waste because this trans is garbage.

  • @tufgriz8917
    @tufgriz8917 5 років тому

    one thing I have learned about gears, If you go to say the junk yard and get a set of gears from another car like say a town car and you keep the shims all in order and reinstall them in your carrier the exact same way they came out of the other housing they will about 90% of the time be within factory specs due to the factory tolerances just use a new crush sleeve on the pinion. Setting the backlash and preload becomes much more important when using brand new aftermarket gears because of the different tolerances

There is videos on how to do it and if you can do the gears like you did I think I can get this trans back together. Then I have a complete 3/55 rear end to put under it. Keep it up. How ever you do it works for me.

    Fyi you can put it in 1st and lay in it and shift to 2nd and pull it back to first and it will hold 2nd gear longer and then you can hit drive then overdrive... Little trick I was taught back in my AOD foxbody days... I use to walk some of the 5 speed cars using this technique

      It also will let it shift at 5800 with an adjustment on a screw, you just drop the pan. First and second gear shift at the same RPM. Downshifts to first and second from higher speeds too. Takes about an hour to install by myself. I wouldn’t even waste my time on a shift kit after this!

    Thats the way I was taught how to change rear gears; but I was told the same thing that you said, this is not the correct way but it works. I have a 01 Gt I took the factory gears out which was 3.32 and went 3.73 , I have a set of 4.10s that I have been sitting on for about a year or so thinking about pulling the trigger on them but im slow doing it by myself. This style video much better. Talk and show what you are doing.
    As far as the stang... I have a 90 GT with AOD and did a H/C/I swap as well. I went with 3.73 gears. I did a Lentech valve body to otherwise stock AOD. It is a Street Terminator 2L. Nice snappy shifts and shift pattern is altered if you want to manually upshift. P-R-N-OD/D-2-1 rather than P-R-N-OD-D-1. Much nicer. I still have stock converter and see no reason to change (unless I need to hold and launch at 2500 rpm or higher). My recommendation, get the valve body and hold off on converter. Unless you are drag racing and need to launch at higher rpm I believe its not needed for daily driver or cruiser.
    Car looks great. Enjoy it.

    Heads and cam alone should’ve made a significant difference even with the stock gear. You should throw a windband on it to see what it looks like, it should need a tune

    Like getting the info, the problems you had and how you over came them. Like on the gears what wasn't right?
