Doing a little math; 70mph at 3000 means you'll be doing 135ish at 5800rpm - in overdrive (I'm assuming you were using the overdrive gear on the hightway). Take out the overdrive and you're topping out your RPMs in the 1/4 mile by the time you hit 120. Kinda limits the amount of improvement you can get on the 1/4 mile. 1/8 mile will be good, maybe even on a road course if you don't mind a lot of shifting.
@@P71ScrewHead True; to a point. When you run out of RPMs at the top end you're no longer accelerating in the 1/4. Once you have enough power to hit rev limit before the quarter is over, it's time to get taller gears.

@@DakotaWatkins117 steeper gearing multiplies torque that is what he means. It won't add power on a dyno may possibly even lose a little compared to stock gears but it feels like adding 50 hp or more. Its a huge difference.
I have a 91 Toyota 2wd p/u with a 5.3L 4l65 trans and went from a 4:10 to a 4:56 and it ran a slower 1/4 mile so sometimes you can actually go to too low of a gear. And I run a EZ Locker and I have never had any problems with my locker.
That ran slower time because it didn't need a gear change any taller than what was in it. A 3.73 would've been your best bet with that engine/trans combo. Something like a 4.56 would be great for a car that originally comes as a 4 speed transmission with a factory 2.73, and terribly under powered like 250 to 350hp. Any more than that and you'll need grip tires to keep from spinning on full throttle
With the stock 2.73 gears, 80 mph = 2000 RPMs Perfect for high-speed cruising -- and stingy at the gas pump. If you're going racing, a Panther ain't your best choice. A stock 2-liter BMW will beat your 60-foot times -- easily.

Dude gears don't kill mpg like everyone acts like it does. It will drop 2-3 mpg or so on the highway but anything up to 50 mph the mpg may actually improve if anything. Allows the car to pull along easier without lugging the engine which uses more fuel than revving the car up does. My 07 gt500 supposed to get 20 mpg stock with 331 gears my bolt on gt500 has 4.10s and I still knock down 21-22 on the highway which is better than the factory rating and its pushing 550 rwhp. Now I do have free flowing exhaust intake and tune which all helps mpg but still.
It really depends on where your engine is making power. 4: 56 is a little high for a stock 2 valve 4.6, with a 5 speed, in my opinion. Sure, it feels like a new car, because it puts you in the power band quicker, but when there's no added power in the power band...Yeah...
No shit and they automatically think you go from getting 27 mpg highway to 10 mpg highway which is not true at all. My old 97 cobra would get 24-25 on the highway with 4.10 gears and the ac blasting and that is including a few wot on ramp blasts on my 160 mile trip that I calculated it on. I was afraid 4.10 was too much because of how everyone talks about gearing and after I kicked myself for not going 456 ecspecially on a b headed 4 valve which is gutless downlow revs to 7k stock. My bolt on 07 gt500 has 4.10 gears and I still knock down 21-22 on the highway at 70 and they're only rated at 20 highway from the factory with 331s.
A 3.73 would have been adequate for the street and highway driving. Anything more and you will be replacing your transmission soon. I seen that happen alot!
I understand that. But this is just a around town/track car. It’s super fun to drive now. Even if I wanted to take it on the highway I wouldn’t be scared too. I love it.

It did a consistent 11.67 in the 1/4 @ 118 mph. It has 367 hp.
No, actually when you put deeper gears in the diff, it actually takes pressure off the transmission, since your rear axle is now doing more of the work. Now if you abuse the car and beat the hell out of it at every stoplight, then yes that can wear out a transmission.

@@falcon6995 You are correct -- and I was mistaken. 4.56 gearing with a 28 inch tall tire drives identical to a 4.10 car on 26 inch tires which is just about the most common combo for these cars. 4.56 gearing will trap 110mph under 6k rpms which is enough mph for a mid 12 seccond rip and could easily still have a 120mph top speed with close to stock shift points. Key here is track duty. 4.56 for the street is not a good combo. 4.10 is about as far as you want to go if you spend any time on an interstate. Thumbs up for the video.
Thanks for watching! I did it because people told me it was dumb. It’s actually in my buddies drift car now and works amazing for third gear drifting. Honestly I didn’t find interstate drifting a problem. If I had to choose 4.10 would be the perfect gear.
True I wouldn't go 4,56 at all and I have 2,004 Terminator Cobra with Super Charged that makes a little over 900🐴's with 4,10 and it Bad [A] daily driver
1/8 mile will be good, maybe even on a road course if you don't mind a lot of shifting.
adding more hp will help that.. ;)
@@P71ScrewHead True; to a point. When you run out of RPMs at the top end you're no longer accelerating in the 1/4. Once you have enough power to hit rev limit before the quarter is over, it's time to get taller gears.
@@jimr5703 i can agree on that too, but depends how many times you're shifting in the 1/4 n how much power you got, gearing is key n every car is different.. i too think it's ok to gear up if your car has plenty of power.. One dude put 4.88 on his 2v Mustang n car was tapping out at 90mph..lol

Gears will not change how much power a car has rather it changes how it puts down that power.
~20% more torque multiplied at the wheels with 4.56's over 3.73's.
@@DakotaWatkins117 steeper gearing multiplies torque that is what he means. It won't add power on a dyno may possibly even lose a little compared to stock gears but it feels like adding 50 hp or more. Its a huge difference.
Had 3.73 and wish I would've gone 3.55 for highway use . 4.56 is nothing but track
reasoning??
2:23. Story of my life
I have a 91 Toyota 2wd p/u with a 5.3L 4l65 trans and went from a 4:10 to a 4:56 and it ran a slower 1/4 mile so sometimes you can actually go to too low of a gear.
Also...wanted to add that @ 70 mph in 6th the rpm is 2250...so 4:10s in a Cobra is possible
With the stock 2.73 gears, 80 mph = 2000 RPMs

@@DGGarage thank you my friend it helps a lot
You ain’t go past the gate station with that kind of gear all those cars will be for his dragracing
It sounds really healthy and looks good.
4.56 ?
Way, way, way too low.
Only good for quarter miles. And in-town drag races.
But the car has got no "legs."
3.73 is the lowest I'd ever go.
Quarter mile is to long, 456 are light to light. I had em my 76 Z28..
It really depends on where your engine is making power. 4: 56 is a little high for a stock 2 valve 4.6, with a 5 speed, in my opinion. Sure, it feels like a new car, because it puts you in the power band quicker, but when there's no added power in the power band...Yeah...
4.56 are for 1/8 mile drag.
Do you daily it with those gears?

People do not understand gearing at all.....I ran 430s in a new edge forever....drove great on the highway.......

@@davidleland8729 trapping 118 with 367 rwhp in a heavier than a mustang tbird? Sounds fishy.
No, actually when you put deeper gears in the diff, it actually takes pressure off the transmission, since your rear axle is now doing more of the work. Now if you abuse the car and beat the hell out of it at every stoplight, then yes that can wear out a transmission.

There is no 3.27-to1 gearsets. They are 3.23-to-1 gears.
4.56 gears in a street-driven vehicle is downright stupid, but OK for a trailer queen.
Well it drives around just fine. Been driving it for 4 months now with out a issue.
There are 3.27 to 1 gear sets they are for Ford. 3.23 to 1 is a Chevy gear ratio. My 2001 GT has a 3.27 gear set.
@@falcon6995 lol some people don’t get it! 3.27 is a very common gear for a new edge from the factory. Your right about that
@@falcon6995 You are correct -- and I was mistaken.
I have a question: What number of teeth on the pinion gear and on the ring gear will yield a 3.27 ratio -- and what number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears yield the 3.23 ratio ??
Example: A 41-tooth Ring gear and a 10-tooth Pinion gear yield a 4.10-to-1 ratio.
A 37-tooth Ring gear and a 9-tooth Pinion gear yield a 4.11 -to-1 ratio.
I wanna know the difference in the number of gear teeth between the 3.23 & the 3.27.
A 3.27 car would be doing 150+ mph at the same rpm which is downright stupid for a Mustang, let alone a 230whp car.
You don't know what your doin. Sounds horrific. I hope your ""friend" has another "friend".
