Small typo in the first slide, the 9700K is meant to be 8c/8t as I said in the video. Carry on 🤓
hey steve! when you do the 9700k thermals do a delidded 8700k with conductonaut so we can see if the stim is better or if we would have just been better off with paste under the hood and a delid ourselves. i assumed they would be about the same with small advanteage to the liquid metal. but would like to know for sure. and dont tell me im talking to the wrong steve!!! no long hairs required in my liquid metal please : )
it looks like the i9 9900k will not be too far away from the 12 core threadripper. at least its about halfway between the 2700x and the 2950x in productivity workloads. but the temps and power thouhg...
im thinking "solder based tim" is not solder. maybe liquid metal impregnated paste or seomthing. seems off. maybe its solder but a different alloy to combat those longevity concerns. remember that intel chips are running up to 90 something celsius while ryzen tries very hard to stay in the 60's. maybe there is something to intels claims that solder can crack over time. plus intel always tries to make cpus last for 20 years for some reason
Hardware Unboxed should I assume few people have either got or been able to invest time in i5 9600K's? I absolutely understand that there's almost nothing new about it apart from the STIM but given what seems to be a price rise for 8th gen CPU's if I was looking to buy an unlocked i5 which would you suggest?
P.S. thanks for another comprehensive set of benchmarks to quell my curiosity :)
Hi Steve. The reason you're seen a higher power consumption on the 9th gen is because of the hardware implementation of Spectre/Meltdown mitigations (although not complete). To avoid a too high IPC hit (still the IPC is lower than the 8th gen), Intel have opted for a solution that is requires far higher power consumption.
I'd suggest for tests to disable 2 cores on the 9900K and compare against the 8700K locked at the same clock speed.
Forgiven
I think this CPU would have melted if Intel hadn’t soldered it to the IHS...
The solder may be the reason for the high temps !
ua-cam.com/video/r5Doo-zgyQs/v-deo.html
the solderd ihs actually makes it worse. drau8er and GamersNexus discuss this in their latest vid.
der8aeur*
the chip is thicker than 8700k and this is the reason of the bad temps
well yes and no the real problem is the thickness of the chip,if you used paste with that chip it would have melted but we dont know if they made the chip because of the solder or for something else.
Truly impressive work Steve! Amazing depth of coverage and analysis. Well done sir.
You should do an Intel vs AMD build and see who comes out on top!
I respect you too Paul... Keep up the great work sir!!
I don’t respect either one, but they are damn good at what they do! Keep up the good work guys!
I mean it could be worse, you could be GN Steve or God forbid Jayz 2c
Rafy, wait, what? Trolls are still alive and well around here? who'd have guessed.
Thanks Paul, much appreciated mate! 👍
I had a dream last night that I pre-ordered a 9900k. After watching this video, I went back to sleep and cancelled.
ok
LOL
That must be a horrible Nightmare
Go with AMD
Freeze Peach isn’t i9 9900k the fastest gaming cpu
Now we know why Principal Technologies had to use a custom cooler on the 9900K, all that heat
Took a barrel of LN to get those results ;) They probably also borrowed some of the cooling capasity of the 2700X since half of it's cores was on a vacation paid by Intel.
I rather choose i7 2600k before that 9900k... i dont like heat at all, and i7 2600 and R7 1700 is doing very well, becouse temp will never rice above 50c
Yeah, try to do any productivity work or play over 140 fps on those CPUs.
@Dex4Sure It's also nearly double the price.
MadFinnTech,
What difference does 140 fps make? When you have such high frames per second using every one of the CPUs, no one can see the difference. This is what is so sad about the intel diehards--they don't even understand that a few extra fps makes no difference that any human can discern. Especially when the fps get into the 200+ range, what are you spending your money on? Do you even have any idea???
I have to take issue with these benchmarks, you didn't clarify how much RGB was used in the tests, no mention of what colour cycles were used, if the lights were flashing, rotating ect, 🤦♂️it's PT all over again....
This is one of the first PT bashing comments that actually made me laugh. Probably harder than I should have.
These are pure stock tests, the RGB must have been on the regular rainbow cycle.
I really wanted amazing results with the 9900K. I'm an intel person, and want a fast timeline renders and exports, do you agree that the AMD 2950X would be the better way to go, although it's almost 2x the price ? Thanks for your thoughts.
9900k is the best gaming cpu
Omg I need one!
9900k has a msrp of 500$
I kind of need one
9900k has temps near the 100's
My 4790k is fine.
LOL, no kidding.
Bro my h105 keeps it under 50 while OC to 5ghz... these reviewers are doing something wrong
@@SyncedCyberSoule those noobs dont know what blender do... all they see is 100c and they freak out... dont bother with them. for every day use a 9700 or 9900 stays at 50-60c
Corsair H115i pro keeps it at good temperatures. Long as you don't extreme OC it.
@@bobbymaldini7653 not really, had my computer bsod because how it hot it gets sometimes at 5.0ghz (its using the krackenx72 aio 360mm radiator) and temps stay around 70c to alot of spikes to 100c or even 90c while GAMING
Will the i9-9900k be blamed for global warming ?
No doubt !
I think not cause no one will buy it
It is true!!! Blame Intel for it!!!Lols!!!😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Nah, Bitcoin mining already has that honour.
There will be not much sales compared to 2700x so not much
"WINTER IS COMING".. oh wait i have a 9900K cold worries no more :)
Funny
Maybe that's why they released it now. :D
Not really a problem in todays age with advancement in cooling techonology, and the wide array of high end coolers.
And id wager, that the guy who spends 500 dollar on a cpu, most likely will invest in one of those.
Orcawhale 77c stock on a 360mm loop is a big no thanks lol
And even than will trothle ..
Im waiting on Zen2 to replace my 6700k. Im really impressed by Ryzen
Same here
Have an i5-750 waiting on Ice Lake or Ryzen 3000 in second half of 2019 :P Maybe DDR5 in 2020+
IF Intel sort out their 10nm I still suspect low supply/yield will make it poor value compared to AMD.
Wish I had bought AMD stock back when the first Zen info appeared on AdoredTV and elsewhere :)
mikfhan
Lol, I'm sitting on an i7-860 and am also waiting primarily for Zen 2! :D
On the GPU side of things, I'm looking forward to what Navi will bring :)
same with me bro. still with 6700K OCed at 4.7GHz
@@syedjaffar310 i could only get mine to 4.5. with 1.4 volts. Didn't win the lotto
Interesting with the overclocking & temps, I managed 5.1GHz at 1.3v but even then with the Dark Rock 4 cooler it went up to 91c in Aida64
Jesus
It's looking like the reason intel soldered these (knee jerk reaction) chips was to stop them throttling at stock, not because they wanted to please enthusiasts lol
Holy shit
Daaaamnnn, not looking good for my DR4PRO.
GN managed 5.2GHz at 64c. This guy can't even get over 5GHz.
Funny how AMD processors have always had a negative stigma about being hot... Oh how the tables have turned
RedDragonGamingHD Yeah, Intel literally trying too hard.
AMD hasn't had hot chips since AMD DURON days... people are retarded
So you never owned one... Yes it consumed alot of power = watts, but they didn't run at 70c, 80c, 90c or 100c
Oh the turntables.
And I've owned the FX8150, 8350 and 9590... so I think I know.. I've also had Athlon 64 X2 chips, many Athlon 64 and Athlon XP all the way back to my old Duron 850mhz spitfire... which was hot.
Meanwhile my friends had the P4's which were hot, the P4 Extreme Edition was like a nuclear reactor... and like every high end generation of Intels has always been over 60c++++ since forever.
That temperature... Seems like Intel used soldered TIM for this CPU because it'll just instantly melt with their standard toothpaste.
EDIT: Surprised to see so many upvotes. Here's my extra 2cents(luv u jay). I bet Intel would still be using toothpaste if the chip wasn't this hot. They didn't really listen to consumer complaints about the toothpaste and the Solder was used because of desperation to keep their IPC lead over AMD. Hooray for competition I guess. Hope AMD shakes things up on the GPU side of things too.
Do you think they soldered the IHS to the CPU by just overclocking it? Meh just run 1.5v through it that'll weld them together.
Melt the toothpaste? More likely burn the PCB down
dickdon71 Marketing tactic to kill your CPU faster so you shell out another $500 USD for a new 9900K ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
You'll save a ton of heating costs though, but better get good fire insurance too.
It's been 7 years and Intel forgot how to STIM. LUL
I left the 9900k on, sorry! I'm not paying the power bill though 😎
a wise move you made there mate.

Not completely true it's a great performer at 1080p (and high refresh) like 8700k.
Price, consumption and temperatures are not good
Not a gaming (value) then.
who spend 500 quid on CPU, and similar price on Cooler to pair it with 1080p class card and play 1080p lol that just stupid. 1080p benchmark for high-end is guideline.
Lol 😎
Wait, it consumes more power than the 2950X threadripper?!
*wheeZE*
Woah isn’t that their new 32 core model?
@@DaybreakPT it's the 16 core, but still crazy all the same. I had to play that part back again to clarify what I just heard lol
Either Intel are off their nut or AMD has literal magic.
@Speed Weed No 2950X is the 16c32t model. The 32c64t model is the threadripper 2990WX.
All this says to me AMD really stepped their game up. for the $$$, AMD really hit it out of the park! the 2700X is a hell of a bargain!
Gonna be a blast when Ryzen 3000 comes out next year.
All their CPUs have been going on sale lately. With the sales, I don't personally see much reason to go for the 9900k, especially since it's been above msrp before the official launch date.
@@Gepstra Just think, Zen+/Ryzen 2 is nothing more than an almost unchanged Zen 1 architecture, just shrunken from the 14nm FinFET down to 12nm FinFET.
But, Zen 2, not only is it going to be shrunken down from 12nm to 7nm, but it's also a complete redesign of the Zen architecture, it isn't just a refresh or evolution(still on AM4 of course). I was honestly surprised by the gains we saw from Ryzen 2000, it wasn't a huge leap forward, but it was a bigger gain for just a mild process shrink than I expected. So, I'm pretty damn excited to see what we're going to get from Ryzen 3000. The talk in the industry right now is that AMD has completely closed the gap in IPC, which will be huge if true since they already have the edge in SMT.
Keep your eyes peeled for talk about EPYC gen 2 this spring(with a 64c/128t SKU!!!) that's going to be the first Zen 2 7nm hardware from AMD, with Ryzen following in the summer and Threadripper next fall. The performance that EPYC gen 2 will offer will tell us a LOT about what we'll have coming from Ryzen 3000.
@@RyTrapp0 yup I remember AMD (Lisa Su IIRC) said that zen1 was a "worst case scenario" as an architecture. And that was pretty great already. Things were only going to get better.
The 9900k and 9700k still shit all over most of AMDs offerings. The 2700x wasn’t shit compared to those two CPUs for gaming.
height of the chip is the reason for high temps. 8700K is 0,42mm and 9900K 0,87mm height. Transistors are at the bottom of the chip so now heat has to travel longer until contacting heat spreader and cooler.
Someone has been watching de8auer's video. ;)
Yes and he is right. How could they fuck this up so much???
It took far to long to find a review of the 9900k and 9700k using a 2080 ti. Additionally, I love the layout of the FPS benchmarks. Great review.
Yup. Nothing super unexpecting here. Crazy gains are only seen in temp... Kinda disappointing.
To be fair. 2000 Cinebench points is pretty impressive despite the chip being kind of a disappointment in heat, consumption, price and custom liquid cooler requirement. Which let's face it, you need custom cooler for this CPU. Only noobs buy this and keep it at stock.
on the bright side the 9590 guys have their new heater upgrade :P.
@@moldoveanu8 True True

Thanks for all your reviews including the other channels (Jay,Joker,Pauls, HCanucks etc) as well. Decided to go Team red for now. R7 2700x . Cant wait! Maybe intel in a few years again.
Impressive work Steve. The amount of graphs is mind boggling. Thank you for including OC results. :)
“World’s best gaming processor” what a meme. Not paying almost double the price over a 2700x for ~10-20 FPS. That’s ridiculous.
It's just clock speeds that kills
cost twice as much, only couple fps more but it is world's best gaming processor indeed.
@@dejavecu Really I'd say it still goes to the 8700k. At least unless you're doing phase change cooling or something. 98 C on custom water just makes the 9900k lol worthy.
@David Whitfield it costs twice as much (without factoring in the cost of a top notch cooler and a motherboard that can handle its high power draw for overclocking) , has severe thermal and power issues, and barely outperforms the 8700k. No one should have any response to this but laughter. It's a joke.
.not even 20 fps plus not all of us have the buget to buy a 240hz display
2700x still hanging in there. Cant wait for zen 2.
It's just the clock speeds that kills it
and the price murders it
You guys are overhyping the shit out of Zen 2.
Havn't you guys learned from RTX? Vega? FX 8150? Fermi?
And even more so, when the games still arn't getting any meaningfull performence increase by the extra cores, Ryzen provides.
dunno, we were hyped by Ryzen and it was even better than the hype.
Zen 2 will have more powerful IPC so those CPUs gaming performance will be much higher.
Best review I've found on the internet! You're including power consumption and temperatures, also all the relevant CPU's. Great video! ^_^
Thanks for the in-depth review!
The interesting here is really how far AMD has come in just 2 generations with Zen...
yes, but actually how both have come in 2 generations
And think about the fact that ryzen 7nm will also run on your am4 motherboard, upgrade path is right there next year to crush this cpu. Possibly you'll pay 300 dollars now for the 2700x aand 300 more next year to get an 7nm ryzen that might be faster than this chip... so you have two cpus for the same price >
*The community is going to be on Intels ASS this weekend.* 😬
Going in dry as well.
Yes indeed!
yes they are the whole pricing scheme is just plain awful even more so with nvidia and their rtx product line what a joke.
I understand with new technology brings higher prices. RTX can get away with it for now until we see what Ray Tracing brings to the table. Intel only added two more cores to their enthusiast CPU to catch up to AMD. Something they should have been capable of doing all along. Other than that it's really just the added "+" we are paying for. I enjoy how their 28 core 5GHz presentation a few months ago has yet to be brought to the table. I'm excited for AMD to complete their 7nm CPU while Intel struggles with 10nm.
I wouldn't get your hopes too high about that, there's a LOOOOOT of Intel(& Nvidia) fanboys out there, and all they're going to do is move the goal posts and constantly rationalize paying $1500+ for only TWO pieces of "mainstream" flagship hardware(9900k + 2080ti, this shit is insane. Not to mention the Z390 board required...).
No matter how far these two companies keep bending their most loyal fanboys over, they'll only keep defending them that much more. This is some straight up Stockholm syndrome bullshit.
And, on a side note, AMD is the most justified in driving up their prices, they very well SHOULD offer the '3700x'(when we get there next summer) for $450-500 and move the rest of the SKUs up to match, because they NEED the profit margin more than their competitors. But, they won't. The '3700x' will, no doubt, come out for probably $330, MAYBE $370 at the absolute most(I'd still be surprised if it was over $350 honestly). As much as I appreciate AMD for sticking to honest prices, part of me wishes that they would take advantage of Intel's insane prices to increase their own margins just for the good of the future growth of the company. I'm willing to pay $30 to maybe $70 more for a Ryzen CPU if it means helping make AMD that much more competitive.
19:13 What are those gear wheels on the right of that motherboard for? Or is it just for looks?
The only gains 9900k has is in the temperature department LOL
Haha. Good one. LOL

@@thewalker7064 maybe he needed the performance in workloads.
Don't forget to get some good RAM for it (Samsung B-die chips based). Zen/Zen+ don't overclock in the traditional sense too well, but if we tweak your RAM timings and the Precision Boost settings, you can unlock A LOT of performance on them, especially in gaming, where most people jump the gun to criticise. At the performance sweet spot of DDR4-3466 CL14 with tweaked sub-timings (there's a awesome software tool and community to help with that) performance jumps anywhere from 15 to 25%, particularly in games, compared to 5, 10% tops on a Intel counterpart. Also tweaking the XFR and Precision Boost Overdrive settings can net you the best of both worlds, all core 4,2++ and single core 4,35+ clocks, while not raising power usage as much as a lazy and reckless pure voltage bump and 4,2 all core lock.
I'd wait for Zen 2. It's not too long wait time and pobably will be the new hot shit.
Love your reviews. Go-to channel for my dose of PC news =)
Intel is still the king of CPU heat. Son i am proud
Wow, no-wonder Intel hired PT to fudge some benchmarks...
(Edit: grabbing a 2700x the i9 9900k just isn't worth the extra cost to me)
Or just do the smart thing, and get a used 7700k setup, from all the morons who was busy upgrading to Coffe lake.
That way you still get the strong single thread, but you don't support Intel(If you don't like that).
dead plateform.
Why woud I settle for a 4 core 8 thread when I could get a 2700x with 8 core 16 thread on a platform thats supported until 2020 - With the option to upgrading to 7nm Zen2 next year....
@@jotunheim5302 Man u have to follow these intel fanboys, buy a worse cpu for more money...
@@jotunheim5302 Its just the Intel fanboys getting triggered. Im also gonna build myself a 2700x system. Replace my 9 year old i7 875k pc
I bought the 8700k 2 weeks back, thought I should have waited for 9700k but right now so relieved to see benchmarks that there is no difference. After delid I am able to hit 5.2ghz at 1.4v with 240 rad aio
But your rich, surely you can afford to buy it..
Tbh, you shouldn't need a delid for 5.2 unless you're cooling with air. But either way, 8700k is still pretty capable.
@Cmdr Flint 8700k is "still pretty capable"? LOL i'm sorry i'm heavily triggered by this statement. Maybe your wording isn't the greatest but I would say 4770k/4790k are still pretty capable as in there are better processors around, but they still do the job very well. Calling 8700k "still pretty capable" is absurd cuz it remains one of the three fastest gaming cpus in the world: 87/97/9900k. The reason 9700k and 9900k were faster in the tests is cuz they have 400mhz advantage out of the box. At the same clocks 8700k is just as fast as those two meaning it's still the fastest gaming cpu alongside those two, not just "capable"
Personally, I'd rather have a 6c/12t over an 8c/8t anyway. That's just me though. If they were my only options I'm saying.
even with aio at 5.2 , it hit above 90C so i had to delid it, it reduced around 15c.
Those price to performance x y graphs are the best!! id be happy to just see that for gpu/cpus from now, seriously amazing stuff!! Well done!
Thank you very much for this coverage 👍🏻
The 2700X still stands strong in front of the i7 9700K.
*behind
Well, if the future is 4K gaming, you could clearly see the picture. I'm no AMD fanboy btw, using a 4790K for the past 4years and still happy.
For the guy who actully has software that supports the many cores, not to mention the usual 60 fps gaming, then yes.
For the guy, who does the same things, but need more than 60 fps, then no.
Lastly your 4790K will undoubtly last another 4 years.
Seriously, we had quad cores since 2008, and yet here we are 10 years later and it's still the norm..
If only the software developers could do it properly.
@@Orcawhale1 Well all I use is MATLAB, SolidWorks, Origin, Python and MS Office which nobody benchmarks. Gaming is something I left more than a year ago. Still, I do think quad cores are not obsolete yet and hence you're very much true.
The i7 and i9 are still not worth the price hike imo.

Intel'S Panopitcon of the Strange and Bizarre
Great in-depth coverage and the reason I subscribe. As you said you read the comments... question for you (or Tim):
So, as a 4K gamer, the 2700X would be the most cost-effective option? I've been an Intel guy for over a decade. My concern is RAM. I know Ryzen is RAM-dependent and have plenty of spare DDR4 (a 4x8GB HyperX 2667 kit and a 2x8GB HyperX 2133 kit), but it's all slow. If I go with Ryzen, I'll have to factor in RAM. Any thoughts? Cheers.
If you game at 4K then there will be no difference between the 9900K and 2700X in almost very situation. That said you will need new memory as the 2667 and 2133 stuff will limit performance.
Yeah 2133 is very slow but 2666 will be fast enough if you're looking at 4K 60Fps anything overthat won't be possible anyway so i guess it'll be fine.
3200Mhz or higher for ryzen will greatly increase your 1% lows (remove jitter/stutter/frame pacing) www.amazon.com/dp/B015FXXBW0/ref=dp_cerb_1#customerReviews seems to be a good value right now :) Cheers!
Yeah ryzen definitively need faster memory with 4K GPU. 3200mhz or more.
@@JamesHryb It does increase frametime performance agreed but the improvement is not very noticeable while gaming unless you are a competitive gamer.
Steve these are really good tests. Thanks for your efforts bro. Keep it up.
Great benchmarks, thanks for including the 9700k! Was really curious about this chip, curious why it's not getting any coverage
Can't wait for Zen 2 to come and crush this in almost every metric that matter. Perf / Watt, Perf / $, multi-threaded performance, core count. And I expect at bare minimum AMD will be on par with Intel in single threaded performance and I can't think of any other metrics.
Also it will run on AM4, so basically if the "R7 3700x" will also launch around the 300$ mark you'd have two cpus, with one outperforming this chip running on the same platform...
I wouldn't count on prices staying low. AMD does this now to gain popularity, but Zen 2 is going to servers first which have the potential to be much more lucrative. If AMD is lucky like Intel there, the desktop and laptop CPUs will be much higher priced than this generation. AMD doesn't even have to be lucky, they just need Intel to fail to meet demand for their CPUs and people to consider AMD an alternative.
@@jonathanpeele42 I agree to some extend, but making their products too expensive will make then interfere with their own product stack. Also the ryzens are a good portion cheaper to produce than Intel monolithic chips, so their margins will be much higher anyway.
Yes I think that Zen 2 will be priced higher, but for much more like I think the highest end AM4 SKU will cost $700, but I think that it's going to be a 16 core CPU that is 2x 8 core dies + uncore die with the memory controller, I/O etc on it.
But I think the 8 core 16 thread Zen 2 processor will be under $300 more as competition to the 9600k and a replacement of the 2600X, and because of how AMD can make it they can make it cheap whether yield are good or bad, because if yields are bad they can do a 4 + 4 config. If yields are good they will do a 8 + 0 config or in other words just a 8 core die.
Really it is not that insane when you think about it, $700 for a 16 core CPU. You can get a 1950X for $680 today and you still have to make room for the Thread Ripper 3 16 core which I believe would be more like $700 - $850. Because you do get the extra PCIe lanes and quad channel memory.
Although given some talks with some server system integrators it looks like AMD will be going with PCIe 4, which on AM4 could mean that AMD could go with 48 PCIe 3 lanes with some multiplexers on something like a "X590" chipset apposed to the regular what I would assumed would be called "X570" chipset, it would somewhat justify the HEDTish pricing of the 14 and 16 core CPUs if you could get 48 PCIe 3 lanes by splitting the 24 PCIe gen 4 lanes.
I also think there is a chance, A CHANCE that we might get an "X590" chipset with 4 channel memory to mean the 14 and 16 core CPU's wont be starved for memory bandwidth. Then you would have the "X599" basically being what X399 is now, but just new. Then you would have something like a "WX599" with 8 channel memory to better support the 24 to 32 core.
This is because of rumours that Eypc will support upto 16 channel memory it is based almost holly based on my speculation that the uncore die can be split into 4 parts each with 4 channels of memory, 32 PCIe 4 lanes etc. but they are a lot less confirmed than the rest. But honestly if you are going to be going with 16 cores on AM4 and 32 cores on TR3 it makes some sense.
@@jonathanpeele42 People considering Ryzen because it's cheap and that's all. They can't raise their new CPU much higher than what they already selling, maybe if Zen2 hit 4.7GHz boost with better IPC like people are talking then the extra $10-$20 will make sense, but higher is a no go. Because even Ryzen+ CPUs are now alteady dirt cheap, $149 for the 2600 is a big YES already.
They can only raise their price much higher if their CPUs have more core count, like 10 core 20 thread Ryzen 5 4600 on AM5 or so.
WE WANT WE NEED AND WE DESERVE ZEN 2!!!!
I have my money saved and ready for It, already.

Thank you for the benchmarks and your hard work!
Love this video. Excellent job.
Oof, 300 watts when over clocked. Remember when AMD were the power guzzlers??
and slow not fast intel still fast
Rauli Trump Intel is trash
So for the people prefering Intel: stick with the 8700k or 8600k it seems to me ;) thanks for the video Steve and the hard work! have a good weekend everyone ;-)
Why would one prefer a specific brand. People should try and buy what is most cost effective in comparison to their specific needs.
That may have been a wise choice, until the last 2-3 weeks where they have hiked the prices for those chips by £120-170 in the UK. Intel are pushing people towards AMD, its an incredible move by them.
Yeah... brand preference is the first mistake in this statement.
as always gr8 review !! thanxxxxx
thanks for the update!
Damn I‘m excited for the performance, not the price though.
Edit: After watching this video, I‘m no longer excited. Kinda sad.
I'm sorry you're dissapointed. I was thinking it would be like the RTX 2080ti, damned expensive but hugely faster. Instead it's Meh
idd, was going for a new build 9900k en rtx 2080ti.. but now :( i don't know.. what should I do.. i'm not in to amd.. call it loyalty :$
sergeyivanovish85 what’s your budget?
3500€ for the case en internals ofc..
sergeyivanovish85 damn, that’s a lot of money to spend on a PC. Are you sure you want to spend that much?
If you want the best of the best, the 9900K and the 2080Ti is the way to go. The price to performance ratio is VERY bad though.
You have to know for yourself.
My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.
😢 I know how you feel.
Thank You!... what a time saver!, awesome review!
Man those temps , wow . I'll be keeping that 2700x I bought in July for $256 and was holding off on the build ... till now . As usual Steve a very well done video !
Its 2am in New Zealand and i was just about to sleep but Steve put a stop to that real quick
With those temps, it's Summer all year round. Whats not to like....
Did you us the current CC 2019 version of Premiere Pro for these tests? I think you should specify this in your reviews.
Whoa.. Those temps and power consumption was NOT what I expected. Nowhere near, in fact!
Excellent review as usual Steve, I'm looking forwards to more testing. Apparently that's needed! Man, that heat.. I'm shocked.
So an idea for a future video: what would the ideal setup for high refresh 1440 and 4K gaming look like? Does the 2080 Ti bottleneck any of the current CPUs at higher refresh rates?
You're saving me thousands, no need to upgrade my 8700k or my 1080Ti's 😀
Same here, I'm keeping this setup until it breaks
you'll upgrade it before it breaks Flashy. cpus live for decades, unless you run them at absurd overclocks/voltages with bad cooling
showoff.
awesome at Minesweep & Solitaire 😉
you are a moron if you wanted to upgrade that setup
Wow.. AMD Threadripper 2950x is ahead of i9-9900x for nearly every task.. but intel is going to complain that it costs 50% more while giving less than 75% more performance.
@David Whitfield you could properly build 2 systems for the price of one system that "eats" threadripper
you mean those $5,000 - $7,000 chips?
ROFL Fanboi detected
Where the fook 18 core intel can outperform 32 core threadripper in video/graphics? LOL
@David Whitfield There is something called price to performance and is important, there is a reason the T-34-85 is considered the best tank of WW2 instead of the Tiger II; which is the same reason the 2700X and 2950X are considered much better options than the 9900k and both the 16 and 18 cores i9.
There always have to be some people who completely ignore the price to performance aspect and then go on to claim "Intel has the better CPUs" as if it would apply for everyone.
Well, only a fraction is wealthy enough to justify spending almost twice the money for a marginal performance boost. Note this is only an example but it pretty much captures the current situation with Intel and AMD when it comes to production workloads.
Now we know why Principled Technologies used an NH-15 for their Intel benchmarks. Anything else would have thermal throttled to nothing!
TDP 95W on Intel specs is a huge lie to customers.
Yep. Anandtech tested the 9900K with 16T load without overclocking and it drew over 166W at the package.
@@Vasharan So, the other 75W must be going to dark energy, not heat!
Intel sepcifies AVERAGE TDP
intel also specifies it's TDP at BASE CLOCK not boost...
They changed that a while ago.
@@swaggsmr.2607 Who decides what is "average"? Is there an Intel definition of 'average usage'? Why is the 95w TDP 9900k drawing more power than Intel's own 140w TDP 7820X?
Is that you, Pentium 3?
Pentium 4*
Prescott, Jr.
7980xe*
Pentium 4 was hotter... 😆
Iman Dutta, Actually that depends on what pentium 4, the original 18nm ran a bit hot, but the 13nano Northwood where rather cool, and overclocked really well, Prescott on the other hand, was a hidden heat blaster.
Didn't know Intel started making multi-purpose stoves for saunas. Although dedicated sauna stoves are still cheaper than this.
Some intel fanboys still defending their shitty company lol, I mean I dont care if Intel or Amd has the lead but how can u defend this shit? Normally u play at 1440p or 4k with a cpu like this(4k literally no difference) and at 1440p u have like 10fps more for more than double the price (in my country) than the 2700x, thats just a joke even the 8700k costs 50% more here and I didnt even count the cooler :/
ZeROID I’m seriously considering this cpu or the 7820x right now. Both cost more than the 8700k with about the same gaming performance. This is not a cpu for people who want to just game. This is for multitasking hence the 8 cores which come with a price. It’s not some intel ripoff it’s for a group of people who demand more out of their cpu than gaming performance. If you look up multitasking test (gaming/streaming) processors like this blow the 7800k out of the water.
@@trippywolfgaming even the 2700x does, just wait for zen 2 and then compare or if u rlly cant wait (if u are a content creator or streamer or w/e) then buy what u want ofc
Great review! Always impressed by your reviews! To the 9th gen parts, it looks as though Intel's 14nm++ process (and 14nm in general) is basically at its limits. Soldering the chips clearly helped, but these chips are basically at there limits out of the box.
Intel has lost their minds and so have their costumers.
Yeah those guys that dress up as Intel CPUs at comic con are crazy....
Didn'tcha know they have been running around like chickens with their heads cuts off ever since the the Ryzen 1600 has launched in June 2017 ( *cough* 7740X)
i9-9900K $580, Ryzen 7 2700X $300, $280 for 5 fps @1440p? Intel are mental.
more money than sense
Yep i sold my 8700k this week and went with R5 2600.
Not worth it.
Even the 9700K, pretty much a dud
Nice work! Great review!
Nice video sir.I know you were strapped for time with this review, but how does the previous gen thread rippers stack up to 9900k? Considering that you can get a 1920x/ with motherboard for almost the price of a 2950 by itself?
My two favourite Steves cranking these at the same time. ❤️
Steve, love your coverage it's very important as you pointed out that even with a $1,200 video card once you game at anything over 1080p these CPU's are just poor value and you are just wasting your money. Who in the world is spending $1,700-$1,800 on just two components and using them on a 1080p monitor? No one. PC builders who shell out that kind of money game at 4k.

Indeed it is :)
I am glad I bought 2700x, my first amd CPU, as Intel has no passion and if AMD hadn't produced mainstream 8 core cpus, Intel would have sold me a 4 core processor today.
Damn for having no passion, Intel is surely kicking AMD's ass damn good. Impressive.
@@user-qe7bt9dz1l You know you are wrong right?
Walter Amir How am I wrong if Intel is the used CPU in EVERY professional high end benchmark on UA-cam? AMD is NEVER used, it’s always Intel because Intel performs better duh. And what is it with every AMD fan constantly writing vague arguments like, “You know you’re wrong right?” But never explain themselves afterwards. It’s SO common among AMD fanboys like they’re one big mindset of a family or something. 🤣
AMD CPUs get higher cinebench scores and way better performance in games with DX12 or Vulcan... My 2700 at 4.1 GHz gets 1858 in Cinebench.
A stock 9900k pulls 144W, and gets around 1847 in Cinebench.
Thank you Steve for the excellent video as always! I am sticking with my Ryzen 7 1700 !
Great video thx!!
Canceled my 9700k order thank you!!
Me too I canceled by 9600k order and got a Ryzen R5 2600 love it
@@CountCarbsNotCals if 9600k can perform as good as a delided 8600k it might be worth buying.
Maybe, out of the 3 the 9600k would be the best value.
Anyone who buys intel now a days is just ignorant. i just built a 2700x pc and i even got the cpu cheaper brand new on amazon with prime shipping for $285 just 2 weeks ago so it can be had for much cheaper then $305 as well if you look around. ive seen it numerous places for $295 which is a steal. 9900k best cpu yeah sure...... if you want to spend 100% more money for 10% better performance maybe and you would still need to buy a cooler which the 2700x comes with the wraith prizm which works fine.
I got a 2700X for $275 at a local micro center with another $30 discount on the motherboard, so bundled with a X470-I strix it was $440 in total, even less than the 9900K alone! Though if someone really demands ultra high framerates at 1080p and has a lot of cash, the 9900K does have the best performance in that aspect.
yup much better value. yeah but to what extent? a minute faster rendering speed over a while? a few more frames that your eyes will never even see and you have to have a monitor to support those frames. its a waste to me
Anyone who doesn't penny pinch is ignorant apparently.
penny pinching is not the same as spending 100% more for barely 10-15% better performance. thats wasting money.
Even if you want to buy Intel, stick to the 8100, 8400, or 8600k / 8700k if you really want those fps that bad. Although even those don't make much sense with Intel's current prices, right now is hard to justify *not* buying a Ryzen.
For gaming, there is no point in buying those new 8 cores CPUs, I bet an overclocked 8600k still matches them, and the heat + power consumption is just insane.
And for productivity, there is the way better value 2700X that is barely worse but cost half as much, consumes half as much power and don't need a ultra expensive custom liquid cooler just to hit acceptable temps, its stock cooler is all you need to keep it cool.
And like Steve said, if money isn't an issue and you want the best, just buy a ThreadRipper. The 2950X wipes the floor with it at productivity, and the 1920X cost less than the 9900k while being more powerful.
fantastic job! can't ignore also the massive hit performance jumping from res to res. EVEN from 1080p to 2k in most cases you feel the difference. ..
Great video really helped me. I am going to have a 2900x machine built for me and I want to know which is a better cooling solution between a NZXT Kraken X62 versus CRYORIG H7 Quad Lumi RGB. Thanks
Well, you can use it as a heater for winter. Imagine the value!
amd 2700 for a productivity/gaming to me is the best overall value...you can overclock it stable to 4 GHZ, which makes it almost as fast as the 2700x and it only costs $249..but it doesn't get much press for some reason
One of the best videos for cpu buying guide thanks man
omg. I am stunned. CAN YOU DO A 4K/2K GAMING TEMP TESTS?
Also what are the temps for i7-8700k same test?
This temperatures are impossible to tame and deal with! And pretty much zero gaming performance gain!
I have spent the last 2 weeks thinking and researching my future new build. Upgrading from i53570k+1080ti system to a 9th gen.
Now I am not so sure! What shall I do?
I live in Israel but I wanted to have the best 4K experience I can (excluding 2080ti with it's stupid price). I am starting to think I will go with a i7-8700k instead for cheaper. Buying in Black Friday maybe. Or AMD latest Ryzen. What do you think?
And should I still get z390 mobos or z370?
Yep. I'm waiting for Zen2.
KillPixel Games if nothing else the 9th gen prices will be lower by then
2018 has been disapointing :(
for intel yeah. AMD it was great.
Even from nvidia disappointing
now im excited for ryzen 3 and navi coming out next year. intel and nvidia really let my hopes down
From Intel/NVIDIA primarily
It's disappointing because by now, we should have Intel's Canon Lake 10 NM. That was suppose to be the game changer. It has been delayed for years now. I was waiting all this time for it to release, but set backs kept happening. Out of spite, I feel like I should get the Ryzen, but I know AMD is not really a great CPU manufacturer. GPU's, thought, are a whole other story.
For the streaming benchmarks for the 9900k. would be interesting to compare against the following cpus: i7 8700k, R7 2700x, TR 1920x. Both main stream last gen chips and a TR chip that is extremely cheap to pick up atm. Would be really interesting to see the result of those cpus for those that do a bit of streaming.
