I think the whole car was designed under the motif of subtle, almost organic change of material; gradually transitioning horizontally. Most evident in the front grill’s transition from solid to open (also the reason for the same color), and the head/tail lights minimalist lines that follow the shadows created by the slight curves. Great design

I’m British Italian and have made it my job to influence my students to appreciate design. Thanks for your fabulous insights.
For me it’s hard to say that the design language of one top car brand is superior to another. Hey Frank, I just looked it up and it seems you can spec the car with either black, chrome, or body color grill! And you can get the shield badges as well!
Thank you so much for these kinds of videos, Frank! I love hearing you discuss cars, design, anything really. I had no idea you designed the FXX… wow. Which project did you enjoy more, designing the MC12 or the FXX? Amazing how both cars (more so the MC12, obviously) are so different from the Enzo they borrowed a chassis from. I agree that having the scuderia shield on the sides and those other cosmetic enhancements you discussed would improve the Roma. Thanks again for sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience with us! You’re the man, Frank!
Congrats on 60k, Frank! I agree that the grille being the same color as the body is a bit jarring. When the no-grille Teslas first came out, it was very strange to look at....like a face with no mouth. As we became exposed to that visual signature, we became more comfortable with it. With electric cars becoming more prevalent, this "hidden grille" will become more commonplace, I think. It feels odd on a Ferrari, though, since the grille subconsciously communicates the need to cool off an awesomely powerful engine (I'm purely speaking from a perception standpoint here).
*That Grill is the laziest piece of design I ever saw!* Look at Lexus LC500 grill. It looks like a piece of jewellery. And look at these recent Ferrari designs. Even KIA and Citroen are coming up with great designs. While Alfa Romeo comes up with Giulia, the ugliest Alfa ever!

100% agree, its the rear end that does it for me. Such a classic look with the rear quarters... id actually like to see some bigger profile tyres at the back. Would really set it off.
I really do love the Roma and specially with the additions to the car as mentioned by you, the Roma would be truly an epic moment in History for cars! ^^
It is fantastic to hear such an influential designer taking the time to breakdown the unique design elements that make a car great (or not). For me the Roma is one of the best looking Ferraris in a while, but then I love (and own) a 612..
The wikipedia page on 'Manettino dial' does not mention Frank at all! I'm not good at that, but someone should definitely edit Wikipedia and add his name with this video as a source. Nice video as always!
Am I the only person who sees a huge amount of Daytona in the Roma? The profile, the front lights (in the way they wrap onto the sides) and even the rear all say 21st century 365 GTB/4 to me.
Excellent review in all the technical details and personal points of view. The Roma is more Fashionista than Pista therefore no side badge is correct, however, that front grille needs a little bit more grunt (Cazzo!) Love to hear your comments on the new Maserati MC20 - an epic return to form.
You are literally the designer behind my favorite mclaren!! I enjoyed every second of your video. But honestly I didn't enjoy the design of Roma and I'm sure ladies will appreciate it more. Will you please make a video about the new S Class and the new EV Lucid Air 🙏 ❤
I totally agree about the grill, I was shocked the way the left and right ends of the grill terminate, it looks stuck on, I think your suggestion is a big improvement as it mask that awkward connection. Many years ago I had two Ferraris, a 308 GTS and a 400 I, presently my daily driver is an Aston Martin Vanquish. I’m a not car designer (interior architecture) but I’ve been a designer all my life and it’s a pleasure watching your podcast. Hi and thanks Frank for another great video. I agree 100% with your analysis and score. To me, the Roma pays reverence to the greatest and most beautiful car ever; the 1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4. It was Love, and Lust, when I first sited one, at age sixteen, in 1968. The design was so perfect (to this day) that it impacted my life, forever. (I became a mechanical engineer because of it, and pursued the inspiration of two great automotive legends; Mark Donahue and Mauro Forghieri.) IF Ferrari had done as you suggested in your detailed review, the Roma would have been even more inspired and coherent in its design and homage to the truly most beautifully iconic of all sports cars, the 275GTB/4. It would be a 9.9 for sure, maybe your first ever 10. So, for now, in my nook, the 275GTB/4 remains the only 10. Congratulations and continued success with your great channel. I'll be staying tuned for the duration.

It's truly a beautiful car, but I have a hard time seeing "Ferrari" when I look at it, especially the front end. And I'm trying to like the grill, but it rubs me the wrong way. Reminds me of old CRT desktop monitors. Other than that, this car truly defines the quintessential fast, luxurious touring car

I'm with you on all counts, although I'll wait till tomorrow when I drive it, and see it in the flesh, to give a verdict on the tail lights. PS, never selling my F430!
Very interesting comments. The Grill does lacks visual appeal, aluminium coloured, larger squares for me would enhance presence. Looks “weak” as it is. Glad no side badge, looks brash, shouts look at me, Ferrari! Not my style. The concept is wonderful, a car again! Not a projectile! An update on those wonderful 50s/60s/70s cars we treasure so much now, more please like this! I could be tempted!
The F430 has always been iconic in design. I love it since I have a Spyder. Incredible job on your design. I don't like the Roma at all. Looks like a Jag. Hello mr. Stephenson. I am an aspiring car designer and have been a huge fan of your work since my childhood.
Interesting. Thar explains the FXX's mouth compared to the Enzo's
The grille reminds me of the Ferrrai Pinin prototype saloon....in a good way. It is very colour sensitive I suppose but a cool statement
I think that grill is that certain something of this car. And a welcome change in times of obscene looking grills on virtually every car
@@bobinpune yeah i kind of agree. this is a FERRARI. I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's the laziest piece of design I ever saw. But everything on a Ferrari needs to feel heavily considered. Otherwise why shell out the $250k+++ for it?
My family has been begging me to enter your field for almost two decades. Love this channel
Went to Dutton garage in Melbourne just the other day and just stared at the mc12 and enzo they had on display and thought of Frank. What a guy. Glad I found this channel.
Love your insight on new cars as well as the videos breaking down your iconic designs. Congrats on 60k, I'm sure 100k is right around the corner!
I appreciate that!
Finally a professional reply to all those claiming this car being a carbon copy of an Aston Martin...just comic how world can turn a lie into real...we need people who's got knowledge to speak up
When you see Roma in real life it's very elegant and gorgeous. It's like you are looking at a hot model with elegant personality
THANK YOU for addressing all of these points. You are a much needed voice of reason on this car. It’s a gem and it deserves the proper recognition. Thank you again
What a privilege to hear your insight on the Roma. Thank you!
I love these videos. Keep 'em coming, Frank!
Thanks, will do!
The darker grille just makes it look right
You were spot on with the darker grille. Showing an image of it sold me
I like how you leave the bloopers in the final video. The video feels more authentic with that. Great job with your channel, stumbled a few days ago on it and I enjoy every single video. You're a great story teller and this keeps the audience's attention. Again, great job and all the best for your channel.
saw one of these in person a few weeks ago, and I have to say it's probably one of the most gorgeous modern cars I've ever seen
Your analysis helps me describe the design elements I use in the sale of Ferrari's, Masi's and Alfa Romeo's...grazie!
Love the GTc4 design. Agree a touch of Aston and Jag is shown in its rear quarter profile which is ineviatable with the front engine long bonnet. Great to hear Frank analyse the details of this car (thanks for the P1 design, so brilliant).
Frank, this channel of yours is a delight. Keep it up!
I'm purchasing an f-430 love finding this information from the designer thank you for taking these efforts and putting this information out there for all of us.
This car really feels like a modernized 250 Lusso to me. Beautiful car.
100% agree, its the rear end that does it for me. Such a classic look with the rear quarters... id actually like to see some bigger profile tyres at the back. Would really set it off.
This car is a modern classic of a timeless beauty. Master strokes all over!
Thanks Frank, for sharing your expertise and the rich Context you provide in your videos, I hope in the future your Chanel gets bigger and bigger.
I appreciate that!
The wikipedia page on 'Manettino dial' does not mention Frank at all! I'm not good at that, but someone should definitely edit Wikipedia and add his name with this video as a source.
Nice video as always!
Amazing car, amazing review. Thank you for your inspirational work.
Am I the only person who sees a huge amount of Daytona in the Roma? The profile, the front lights (in the way they wrap onto the sides) and even the rear all say 21st century 365 GTB/4 to me.
I had a Same thought dude .... I've thinking about that since the launch of the Roma, it has essence of a Daytona and 250 lusso
I'm also amazed almost nobody talks about the Daytona, seeing the Roma. Until you!
I'm sure it's no mistake either man! 👌🏼
Ian Phillip love the concept of a car not a wind tunnel product, style is all for me 150mph max more than enough, 2.5-3ltrs plenty
Yes. Especially the proportions. The huge front end, like 1/3 of the car is hood.
I love the design classics behind... Including that bottle of Talisker! Class act! 🏆
The F430 is one of the most ideal sports cars to me. Started my interest in mid engine cars. Thank you for your work.
Congratulations Frank! Keep up the great work :-)
Excellent review in all the technical details and personal points of view. The Roma is more Fashionista than Pista therefore no side badge is correct, however, that front grille needs a little bit more grunt (Cazzo!) Love to hear your comments on the new Maserati MC20 - an epic return to form.
Until this day, your F430 is still my favorite Ferrari.
You designed the fxx! Wow the fact that I get to watch your videos and absorb your unique knowledge is fantastic. Thank you
The F430 is my MOST beloved Ferrari alongside the 360s. Such a great insight to their thoughts and processes.
You are literally the designer behind my favorite mclaren!! I enjoyed every second of your video. But honestly I didn't enjoy the design of Roma and I'm sure ladies will appreciate it more.
Will you please make a video about the new S Class and the new EV Lucid Air 🙏 ❤
Just a few facts of life:
-Frank loves Ferrari
-Ipad Pros bend
-There’s always a bottle of whisky behind
during the part where the camera slowly zooms into him talking my high aF ass thought i was getting sucked into youtube...good shiz. amazing vid btw .
I am a total car person, I’ve had all kinds of cars & I loved everyone of them.
Thanks Ernie! 👍
I just stumbled upon your channel and I’m already in love with it! To hear someone talk so passionately about their craft and unveil their expert knowledge is just a joy, and from one of the best car designers ever (F430 and MC12 are just perfect) 😄 Keep it up!!
yup, I like your grill better... thank God.. from the moment I saw this car the grill bugged me and now , even though im not a designer, I don't feel like im loopy or something.
I’d love to see a breakdown of the most recent Ford GT!
Those headlights are similar to the ferrari monza SP1/2
Yes just a bit wide on Roma
Frank, I’d love to hear your analysis of the Ferrari 812SF!
Thank you!
I don't like the grill, either. First thing you notice and it's just odd, almost like an electric car.
The rear is beautiful, though.
I love it I think it's cool the way they executed it

I’ll love to hear your opinions on the Lexus LC500!
McLaren Speedtail..please review
One of the most elegant cars in my opinion..would love to see what you think
Aditya Dhakappa That side profile is everything👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻
more of an attempt at elegance. It's a Mclaren Senna with a better body, a racecar that was far too modified for street use
*Hi there Frank! - I just found your evaluation of Beiber's West Coast Custom build ('diplomatic' - to say the least), and from there I went to watch your take on the Roma. and let me tell you I'm just **_thrilled_** to be fully on board with your honest assessment of this beauty! (The missing 'Stallion' logos on the side is in my mind actually a no-brainer...) All in all, your critically observant eyes **_definitely_** qualifies to a subscription! . . . .* ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💓
I will one day purchase a Roma Spider … M hopefully. Awesome analysis and amazing insights, thank you Mr.Stephenson!
I love the Roma. Now, talk for 20min about that Talisker.
the back need work but it more for upgrade later...
All drinkers know that when there's a full glass next to the bottle, it means it will be drunk within the next few hours XD
So this is how it goes? Mr. Stephenson does one of these videos and then he allows himself that one glass of Talisker :)
It's truly a beautiful car, but I have a hard time seeing "Ferrari" when I look at it, especially the front end. And I'm trying to like the grill, but it rubs me the wrong way. Reminds me of old CRT desktop monitors. Other than that, this car truly defines the quintessential fast, luxurious touring car
that thin front makes it a Ferrari, I can recognize that nose anywhere
Some things just don't need changing. They should've kept the circular tail lights in my opinion.
It’s closer to old Ferrari’s than you think....particularly that grill. Should be round lights though.
@@ryanwaugh1 What older Ferraris have that sort of grill? I'm curious
Aidan R. The Ferrari countach and the Ferrari Diablo.
A brilliant wrap on the new Roma with insights that really provide a view on the design that only Frank can bring. Keep up the brilliant perspective that you bring and look forward to many more videos.
A truly GREAT review of a...destined to be...classic Ferrari.
There is NOTHING I don't like about this beautiful work of kinetic art.
Kind regards, Ben
Make a smaller version of the F12 TDF and you'll have a winner forever. I know these are all about aerodynamics; but this one is a step back in design.
Hello mr. Stephenson. I am an aspiring car designer and have been a huge fan of your work since my childhood. I grew up with a 430 spider in the garage, and so I understand how special a truly beautiful car can make you feel. Your timeless lines and simplistic features are to me, what truly make a car beautiful, and provide a sense of occasion just to be around. I admire your work heavily and am trying to head in the right direction with this career path. You are one of the few today who still understand what it means to design a beautiful, and timeless car, and so i trust your opinion more than most. If you could, id greatly appreciate if you would be willing to provide me with some tips and pointers on how to approach this career path, and how to get started. Once again i love your work, and I greatly appreciate your time sir.
Sincerely: Christopher
I do know a bit about classic Ferrari's having photographed many over the last 20 plus years, and yet I still think this reminds me of a modern Aston Martin.
I love design analysis, so many car based websites and channels never discuss this as it's something that they don't understand. A breathe of fresh air to hear the details explained.
I attended an event a couple of years ago with Julian Thomson and he was great as well. Thanks for the detals!
Please comment on the fact that it looks like the Maserati Alfieri Concept!
As far as I know, the ferrari california and gran turisimo share the same underpinnings
@@THESLlCK A lot of cars do, they share the same parent company too. But as @shmee150 pointed out this design might've been taken from Maserati and then tweaked into a Ferrari.
@@PorscheFanatic I honestly doubt it, but it's a possibility. I really like the look of the alfieri, and prefer it to the MC20 in more ways than one.
^ this! it's the alfieri I was waiting for..
I think it looks too much like a Vantage, but yea it also closely resembles the Alfieri
Great video and analysis! And im with you Frank, it's a stunning, absolutely beautiful Aston Martin......ähh i mean Ferrari.... ;)
LMAO 🤣
The grille would be a LOT nicer if it wasn't a second piece, but rather part of the rest of the bumper. It would be smoother, and less e-car like.
It would be a lot nicer if somebody actually spent some time on the design. Laziest excuse for a design.
Lexus LC500 wins by a mile!
@@bobinpune Get glasses
@@bobinpune LOL what the excuse would be?
Mr. Stephenson, I agree with most of your comments on the F.Roma. Mostly on the tail lights...it's their signature since 208 GTB. Thanks for your reply on BMW. Sari
