      Can you please explain what difference this video made exactly? It's basically one of hundreds of videos crying about consumerism and virtue signalling. There's no groundbreaking insight here, everyone knows what's up. This is just more passive entertainment concealed as something intellectual to make yourself feel like you are learning. If anything, this is all nonsense that serves to shift the blame on producers rather than consumers, victimising yourself. Nessa Goes Wild how did this video help to develop you as a person? It didn't did it. It just made you feel like you're special and not "one of them". I hate to break it to you, but you're still just one of them, you're just one of them who is trying to fool themselves into thinking they are not being fooled.

    • @nessaelessar
      @nessaelessar 6 років тому +29

      @@cloudstrife7349 I kindly disagree. Becoming a minimalist and caring about the impact overconsumption has on the planet has only worked for me because I know there are people out there who feel the same way. Had I not watched so many videos and read so many books about the topic over the years I wouldn't have seen any reason to change my behaviour. Which is why videos like this one are so important. I don't see victimisation here, rather a philosophy that I share, which is that you are responsible for your actions, even when it's hard to resist certain temptations. I think the more people share that mindset the better.

      Honestly a lot of stores are like that, they'll have a fake "normal price" and then the sale price will actually be the normal price or sometimes even higher. A big brain move is to look behind the shelfs plastic behind the sale sticker at the mylar (the original price behind the sticker) to actually see the real difference. I know because I've worked in retail and have put BS stickers up and watched people fall for it 99% of the time, it's really dumb.

      Many will tell you there is nothing after this life, but it's a lie.

      The system tells you that *Black Friday* is a day of many good deals, but again lie.

    • @sds187

      People often say "Those who buy Lamborghini-s" are materialistic. This mindset doesn't feel right to me, because when one thinks that way, he does not seem to recognise all the effort that went behind the production of such a beautiful car, almost denigrating the artistic achievement. This applies beautiful/expensive things of all sorts of categories, and makes me feel that people who think this way, that to buy a beautiful watch is materialistic, are the actual "materialists".

    Coming from someone who works at Best buy, please, PLEASE have some patience and be kind to the associates who are helping you out. A lot of us are forced to miss Thanksgiving dinner and work absurdly long hours on Thursday and Friday. It is really hard for us to keep the happy face up during the whole event when we have 30 different people yelling at us for different items hours on end. Be safe, spend responsibly, and remember to enjoy the time with your family.

      Well sometimes you want something. Getting a good deal on something you want but don't need is still a good thing, ESPECIALLY if you are able to budget and buy accordingly. For example, I don't NEED a gaming laptop... A normal one would accomplish all necessary online tasks. I WANT a gaming laptop to play on, and to keep myself entertained. I budgeted, went for a lesser option, and saved myself 500 dollars with a black friday deal. Instead of spending $1,200 on a laptop down the road plus tax, I bought a $900 laptop for $700. I'll be paying off the remainder of the $700 plus tax I spent ($250), by donating plasma 5 times over 2 and a half weeks. done and done. And THAT is how you budget when you really WANT something.

      Angela Moulton I grew up in Poland and our tradition was that mainly kids got the gifts under the tree and usually it was nice chocolate, some fruits and sometimes a coloring book with new crayons 🖍 😊 it was the best and I remember most of my gifts from my childhood which I think is amazing.

    • @arx754
      @arx754 6 років тому +12

      Angela: We grew up poor (5 kids). One Christmas, (I thnk i was in 3rd or 4th grade) we all went to bed Christmas Eve, but I woke up to a car pulling up outside, rather late at night. I peeked out and saw our Parish (Catholic) priest walking up to our door with what appeared to be gifts. The next morning, under the tree, there was a gift for each of us kids. I got a brand-new "Thumbelina" doll (anyone remember those? You wound up a knob on her back and she moved around on the bed/floor as if she was a real baby). I was THRILLED! It was the first NEW doll I'd ever owned. It was only years later that I realized that if the people in our Parish hadn't contributed gifts, we would have woken up with nothing under the tree. Even at that young age, I could have dealt with it, but I remember seeing my parents watch us open the gifts and looking SO happy that we were so happy with them.
      So, to "pay it forward", every year as an adult (before I retired), at work, I'd participate in the Christmas "Adopt-A-Family" gift-giving. I had a very good income (college degree plus law school), so I'd pick a family with lots of kids. Even 5-7. These were "pre-screened" families and parents provided a list with ages and sizes of the children. And, I'd go SHOPPING! I'd buy toys, winter coats, and even bicycles. I did notice that each year, more and more parents mainly asked for warm clothes for their kids, like a winter coat, shoes, sweaters, but I always made sure to get the kids a couple of the toys they asked for, too.. (I've never had kids---by choice---so I really enjoyed all this and liked to imagine how happy the kids and parents were on Christmas morning).

    The reason why I shop on black Friday is because, as a minor with very little income, it’s the perfect and only time to really go out to shop for family and friends. We usually go out as a group, and the deals let me get what I need and keep it in budget. It is a very capitalistic event, all for the sake of money as I’m aware, but it’s nice to have a day to shop on my own. I am lucky in the fact that where we typically go, it is very calm and there are little to no crowds.

    I am truly happy, that you uploaded a video to this very dramatic and, in my opinion, a very serious topic.
    Today, I was sitting in class, waiting for the teacher to arrive, and started talking to a female classmate, who seemed a bit stressed. She told me, that she was stressed because she wanted to buy a pair of shoes, which will eventually sell out, the very first minutes of Black Friday.
    I tried to convince her, that the whole Black Friday event, is such a trick of the companies to sell more and make more wins, but she was too busy looking to her phone, to find a good deal for her pair of shoes.
    After watching your video, I directly sent it to her and she responded me, that number one: you earned a new subscriber, and number two, that she will not buy a single thing on Black Friday and asked me to go out with her for a cup of coffee so I can make sure, she won't buy anything. :)
    Thank you a lot Matt, for your very professional and inspiring videos. I hope you have an amazing day!

    I currently work at Best Buy and this year’s black Friday was madness. It isn’t my first time doing it, but as the years passed I could tell that a lot of these “deals” are really just mediocre products that haven’t sold well in the past. It’s all just marketing obviously, but it’s good marketing from the standpoint of these retailers. It’s all about how much money these companies can milk out of people who are desperate to try and find the best prices on products. In reality, a lot of these sales go on throughout the year and there’s no need to wait in line for hours or face crowds of people for something you could have bought months ago for a similar price. Also, Black Friday deals extend more and more every year. Now there’s deals prior to and after Black Friday (including cyber Monday). Just keep an eye on the products you really want throughout the year and I guarantee you can find the same deals if not better on days other than just Black Friday.
    P.S.
    Please be patient and kind to the employees helping you. We work throughout the days and nights to get you (customers) what you want. You guys get to go home while we get to clean up after your mess. Just saying.

      Use a price tracker. Look at the actual cost of what you intend to buy over Black Friday, as the reality is that they hike prices before, so they can offer 'massive savings' around the sales season - the TRUTH is that you are often paying more, or the same around Black Friday as you would at other times of the year. Be smart, don't fall for the bullshit.

      What sucks to me is that means their employees get no days off. Wal-Mart is always open these days - Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving, etc. The best I've seen them do is close early on Christmas Eve and open later on Christmas Day. I guarantee that's because they make so little money then that it's not worth it to be open - not out of the kindness of their hearts.
      And so their employees, who are already treated like shit, have to leave their families to come deal with psycho shoppers. Wal-Mart is the Ebenezer Scrooge of stores.

      I work in the Electronics department at my Walmart, and I can say that Black Friday (Thursday) here was really chill, relatively speaking. Besides getting yelled at a couple times for not knowing exactly, within the foot, where the stupid Iphone sales were, people were generally calm. Sure, it was still a mad dash, but no violence, no real aggression, and no broken shit. I think online shopping is responsible for that because Cyber Monday is where the real good picks are. *I am not advocating falling for this bastardization of consumerism*, but online is the way to go from here on out.

    I really like her description and term of true materialism. I can’t lie, I enjoy getting new clothing from time to time, but over the past two years I’ve really embraced the idea of sustainability and being more ethical about how I approach my spendings. I’ve never been a Black Friday shopper either, but I can see why so many people buy into it, however I feel like we should all take your tips about gift giving. Nowadays (I work in retail) people come in and just buy gifts as if it’s an obligation rather than something to cherish. Luckily I’m glad we don’t do this in my family lol the last time I received a Christmas gift must have been 3 years ago. And it was something very special.

    Growing up desperately poor my parents would just buy random cheap crap. Quantity and appearance mattered more than quality because they couldn't afford anything we really wanted like a 50 dollar video game. But as a result my bedroom looked like I was a horder. They'd guilt trip me whenever I tried to throw anything away. So, my strategy, is to listen to what my wife and kids actually want and buy a few items for each of them. No, the tree isn't buried in items and I can almost hear the corporate tools reading this hissing that I'm a communist for not wallowing in this disgusting orgy of spending. But I'm debt free and going to stay that way despite the best efforts of corporations and their lap dogs.

    I really think this video speaks volumes about the holiday season and how so many messages focus on consumerism. The last year I have really shifted my spending habits. Now asking do I really NEED this or do I just WANT this? I have shrunk my closet by about 4 times the size it originally was and started selling the clothes I don't wear anymore or donating them to people that NEED them. I have been what my friends like to call an OUTFIT repeater and I ain't ashamed to admit it. I spend less time picking out clothes, I value my things more than before and I know where everything is most of the time because there's less STUFF! Less buying, equals more money in my pocket and fewer emissions into the air from production methods. As an entrepreneur, I have learned to be resourceful and I still have a long way to go!!! Got any more tips about not getting sucked into the world of BUYING SHIT WE DON'T NEED?

    Did I miss something? The video states that companies slash prices on black friday. SOMETIMES they do. But many times I noticed that often what they actually do is RAISE the price of an item 2-4 weeks before black Friday and then slash the price again on Black Friday to make people think they are getting a deal; the reality is they are really paying just about the same price as the item is most of the year. I've already noticed that again this year with several items I've been eyeing for a few months now and it's ridiculous how they're trying to market them as if they are at reduced prices!

      Miister00 none. Best Buy was cool enough to hand out vouchers and if you got the voucher, you got the TV and if you didn't you could get out of line and go home. I was in and out in 30 minutes.

      Same here. I went out about 4 or 5 years ago to Target and got the iPad Air. Ok, that wasn’t all I got. I got some items I needed from the grocery section as well. When in Rome..heh
      The hilarious part was standing at the checkout and people just staring at my groceries and thinking..wtf?!? Even the cashier asked what my deal was... I’ve not shopped a BF since.

    I'm happy I re-visited this video. With black Friday coming tomorrow, I ended buying a new Sony OLED Smart TV at a "black Friday" price, and I had a bit of buyer's remorse. After rewatching this video though, I don't feel too bad because that's the only thing I bought, and it's a major upgrade from my 2012 LCD TV. It's gonna be used daily, whether it's me or my girlfriend. Thank you again for making these videos, and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, as well as this awesome community who watch and comment on these videos!!

    Working on Black Friday is absolute hell, I worked Macy’s and from 4:30pm-3:00 am it was a shit show! The 1 thing I wished is that people knew Macy’s runs a sale every week, there is no such thing as no sale so the things people stand hours for they can wait a week and get it for about the same price 💁🏾‍♀️

      In my country, our Black Friday equivalent is Boxing Day. It's a similar concept that everyone has a family day for Christmas Day then there are sales the following day (Boxing Day). I used to go along with my Dad as a child. As a teenager in the mid 2000s, I realised it's not all that enjoyable to be scrounging for bargains among loads of other shoppers, when there'll be a comparable sale some other day. I'd rather spend the day at the beach or river (because it's summer at Christmastime).

      What’s the problem with children working? They’re doing it for money and to support their families. If anything it should be a governmentally fixed issue not a company one. Or unless if I’m missing another aspect of child labor that could be wrong.
