The two-day rule. Don’t let more than two days pass without working out. Put a big X on your calendar when you do a workout even if it’s only ten minutes.
If I understand correctly, it’s don’t let more than one day pass without doing the desired habit. So “two day” refers to the minimum number of days in a row you do the thing.

Life expectancy extends on avg. by 3,4 yrs, if you do sports regularly • The 2DR: "I don't allow myself to skip my fitness habit for more than 1 day in a row." • Alternative: "I can allow myself multiple days off per week, if necessary, but never 2+ in a row." • The clou: That way you don't let 1 day become 2, 20 etc. and start neglecting your health • It doesn't need to be a full workout at the gym, but at least 10 (better: 30) min. of activity (home workout, hiking, jogging etc.) • It's inevitable that you will fail occasionally • Forgive yourself and move on, that is try to stick to the rule the best you can (80-90% commitment rate is good) • Valid exceptions: being sick, incidents out of your control etc. • Regular workouts = keystone habit that positively affects your mindset and decision-making in other life areas • 2DR is also appliable to other habits, e. g. sticking to one's productivity system etc.

I am glad to see you growing. Your content is so great, it’s so inspiring that I can’t imagine how better can it be now with someone focused with the editing process, giving you time to be even more creative. Congrats and thank.
I don't always love your vids, but this one is really really great -- no nonsense, simple rule, just do it. A lot of people are commenting about the ad, but for the record, it's not a big deal at all. Free content is free content, and I'm guessing that those who feel butthurt about ads have never tried to put a well-organized, well-edited video together on any topic, for any length. No easy task, and very time-consuming. Ads are a necessary evil.

Hi there, I doubt you will have the time in your schedule to read this but I thought best to send it anyways. For many years I suffered with a back injury that left me bedridden. During this time I became obsessed with the dopamine hit from consumerism and got myself into a little bit of debt, all while being unable to work and gain income. I would lay in bed feeling utterly depressed and lost yet continue to build up items I did not need or use. I finally recovered after almost 4 years and now have a chance of rebuilding or (thanks to watching your videos) decluttering and simplifying. Thank you for posting such honest and upfront content. Every video I feel like I learn something new to which I can use in my every day life. Good luck and I hope the channel continues to do well !

Ohhh men, i stick to my habits like crazy. I document them, write my excel sheets, track my runnings and bike tours and feel awsome! Than i get time free for holidays, spend much time with my wife, family, grill often, meet friends and drink to much. Its so hard to go to the gym if you skip train for days or weeks. Matt ! I struggle with perfectionism and at times it can be useful but at times it can be so stressful and if you really think about it when you are a perfectionist you will never really be happy can you do a video on perfectionism? I was raised with a father who was a perfectionist and always had a spotless house and I never have a messy room and everything has to be perfect or at least close to perfect but sometimes I can get so stressful and my anxiety goes to all time high that I just have breakdowns and it can get hard.. with most of your videos they have helped me get things done but they have to be done “perfect” in my mind .. please do a video on the background of perfectionism .. by the way I do not have OCD because OCD is another form of struggle..
Check out "Diane inDenmark" channel. she does videos on the flylady system. It is designed especially to help perfectionists build small daily and weekly habits to take control of their homes and schedules. Using a timer is integral to tthe system and i find it very helpful. The Secret Slob is also very inspiring. I combine flylady and the GTD system to overcome procrastination and stay on track. flylady for routines and GTD to focus on "optimal" tasks and goal setting.

@@_saintoj According to him - only one day in between - Workout Monday and Wednesday.
I was listening to the radio with my mom and they were talking about habits and I said that I like the two day rule. And the. The people on the radio, starting talking about you and how much your video was helping you. So proud of you!
this is a really good idea! I'm gonna start implementing this onto things I want to do but never find motivation for. working out, reading for 30 minutes, painting/drawing to stay creative, practicing my Spanish for at least 30 minutes, etc! I love this, thank you!
Love that moving camera intro. Doing Media in college and I'm taking note of that!
Narfu good luck with that !
Bro, I’m from argentina, I started watching your channel when you were only 100k, and it’s amazing how you have made such a progress whith it, your channel is the proof that you put on practice everything you say on your videos, keep the work on !!!
I’m a musician and have always struggled to practice consistently. Going to enact the 2 day rule with practicing the saxophone!
Thanks Matt
Could you explain more? I can not understand from this video. Thanks.
I'm finding it super helpful man, all the best to you!
Practice Everyday
For me I struggle with this too, do it everyday, even if only 20-30 mins, some days 3 hours. Just do what you can everyday, starting and getting your instrument out is the key. Then you’ll get into flow
Play songs you like too on top of your repertoire and technique work to keep you motivated
I am glad to see you growing. Your content is so great, it’s so inspiring that I can’t imagine how better can it be now with someone focused with the editing process, giving you time to be even more creative. Congrats and thank.
Thank you, I won’t finish your video because I’m going to bed. I was lying in bed, depressed and mindlessly scrolling and thanks to you that’s over
I don't always love your vids, but this one is really really great -- no nonsense, simple rule, just do it.
Matt made this whole video just so he could *show off his biceps*
Yeah it's his one of the rules 😂
I would too if I had them lol
Stacy Higginson LOL I remember when he was talking about his exercise routine. “biceps, biceps, biceps, and .. biceps”
Works for me!
LEAVE MATT ALLOONNNEEEE!!!!
Why do I feel that I’m watching this video for the second time
Jelio Elkenev I thought the same thing, he mentions it in his how to form habit video
same?
Yeah!Strange as f*ck
Maybe y’all seen the yes theory guy 💁🏽♂️
Lol saturation man, it’s coming
This is such an underrated gem.
“I don’t think there is a sentient being on earth that would be able to continue through with the 2 day rule indefinitely for years and years on end.”
David Goggins: Am I a joke to you?
Matt if you don't do a "Bicep Curl Everyday For 30 Days" video, I'm going to be disappointed.
Need a few rest days for muscle growth.
@@ayo_k32 Agreed. You can't push hard if your muscles don't have a chance to recover.
@Herbonaut that would just be silly
@@ayo_k32 It was just banter lol
D Lish i thought the same. I came to American high school and had 2 trainings daily. Gym + cross country running. In several weeks gained ~4 pounds and i think lost fat. However it’s really hard, feel sometimes really tired
Can we expect an updated apartment tour? I really would love to see that.
Benjamin Sanchez yessss, i would love that too.
What do you want to see in? It's empty.
I run with that rule now! Helps keeping me accountable by 100%
Still running
Hi there,
I doubt you will have the time in your schedule to read this but I thought best to send it anyways.
Omg I found this video again. I just want to thank you so much I lost around 45lbs got a lot healthier and got a way better social life .
Actually from the bottom of my heart thank you
I literally come up with the best ideas when I’m about to fall asleep
That's true for most of people
It’s cuz your brain waves are in a different state then
then you decide to do it first thing next morning but in the mornings it's either forgotten or it's not as exciting as it was in night. I feel you T.T
I always remember something super important that I've been forgetting as I'm falling asleep. And then I have to decide whether I'm going to wrench myself out of sleep to write it down or sleep and risk forgetting it forever
Just started working out a few days ago and I already feel like it’s going to be one of the most beneficial habits I’ve ever developed.
I worked out this morning, inspired by Matt's biceps. I will abide by the rule.

Holy shoot
Ohhh men, i stick to my habits like crazy. I document them, write my excel sheets, track my runnings and bike tours and feel awsome! Than i get time free for holidays, spend much time with my wife, family, grill often, meet friends and drink to much. Its so hard to go to the gym if you skip train for days or weeks. But next year i get my sixpack back.... same every year. I was always to hard to myself and blame me for not stick to habits. This 2 day''s rule gave me so much. Lets walk on heads up, we are all the same average guy's but we keep on trying. Thank you very much for the true words :)
2:04 He leaves his iPhone X on the table
2:08 and suddenly it becomes an iPhone 7
hhaha good catch
This footage is brought to you by Apple's iPhone X, noticeably better than the iPhone 7.
Well done Sherlock
I can't tell the difference in them?? How???
Mighty Onion the camera on the 7 is just a small circle while the camera on the x or xs looks like a traffic light
Im feeling productive just by watching your videos thx alot incridble content
Hi there! Not trying to come here and say that I know it all, but I had a similar experience with Gary Vee's channel, felt productive by watching without actually doing more stuff, and it was a trap that I just realized months lather. Keep up nice!
I'm going to use this for all my goals! Exercising, drinking more water, eating healthier and so on. Thank you!
I wonder if any other working parents with young kids like me watched this and immediately gave up. I'll rewatch this in about 15 years.
I see myself as in Matt, maybe a future version of me. He is the kind of person i want to become, both mentally and physically. He is kind to the world, and to himself. Maybe gym enthusiasts may remember zyzz made an ideology, and i believe Matt is making the same. I would be really interested in reading a complete book made by him . I really admire your content.
Thank you for being you :) You make me want to improve myself more and more with every video!
He has a podcast episode about rejecting perfection. Sounds like what you're looking for. Episode 045.
Wesley Cheung thank you ! 🖤
Ashley Haggstrom see a therapist. that’s a mental illness
Wesley Cheung where can I find the podcast?
Proud of you for reaching out for help Matt!
My local radio station shout out this video on air today. Made me feel proud since I’ve been a long time subscriber!
Other people's rules are the reasons why we break our goals. It has to be our own rules only.
Whats wrong with making other ppls rules yourselves?
I think rules should be agreed on together with the people that are concerned. (Democracy) It makes the rules more personal and also takes others in consideration.

This is by far, the best channel on UA-cam. Keep up the good work, Matt. I appreciate all the time you put into these videos! THANK YOU
“If you set the right rules for yourself based off what you value most it’ll help you live a life that you’ve always imagined”
UA-cam recommended this, and I'm not disappointed! Awesome video, keep up with the great work!
Hell yes! I loved this. So many people make these everything-at-once goals and wonder why they fail. This rule is so simple, straight forward, easy to replicate and adaptable. Love jt
Definitely going to implement this into my studying!
I’m implementing this right away. Refer to my last video about how Entrepreneurship and the non stop hustle has destroyed my health
Going to give this rule a go in 2020! Thanks for always sharing, Matt!
These videos are so well shot and I can tell there’s effort soooo I don’t mind at all it took 4 minutes to get to the point
You’re content is seriously going viral off of UA-cam. I just heard about the “two day rule” on the Bobby Bones morning talk show on the commute into work this morning! And I said out loud “that’s Matt D’Avella!!” I’m so happy for you and all of your accomplishments. Keep being stellar. 💪🏼
That moment when you get anxiety because Matt left his phone on the table 😫
I needed this video
"Who the hell are you to do this?" Yes, I hear that voice daily. I need to fire that voice and hire another one.
I like how it says that you are in control of your voices (i didn't want to use the 'as if' phrase so forgive me if it sounds weird). I'm sure not in control of mine.....
InfiniteLoop I was speaking metaphorically, but I do suffer from mental disorders and although I do not hear voices, some people do. A little kindness and sensitivity can go a long ways sometimes.
@@HarrietFitzgerald580 I think they were making a joke, hopefully not making fun of you. It was an insensitive joke though, and they should have been more thoughtful before writing that
Just talk back to it! "Who the hell are you to tell me I can't?!" 😉
I'm going to apply this rule to my diet to start out. Two days clean, 3rd day treat myself a little. Great video
been feeling extremely unmotivated and lazy these past 2 days, back to back I let myself just stay in and be on social media/play video games. I was doing so well on creating a routine in my life and I just let myself get distracted. This really made me feel better and see its normal to get distracted, I just have to keep going. Consistency. Show up. Thank you!
I loved the video. It taught me
1. I need rules
2. 2-day rule
3. Improved my functioning
I watch a lot of "these" videos and always feel kinda meehh.. It's just talk for views. But you make some solid points that i'm gonna try to implement in my life. I'm a master at procrastination and have been telling myself to get a gym membership for like 4 years now. I feel like this is the perfect time to get some better routines going. Vacation and summer is over. Winter is coming. Change is happening. I can feel it. Let's go.
Discipline is the source of success. Without it you can't achieve much.
“What you are not changing, you are choosing.”
Love it! "Not making a decision is actually a decision. It's a decision to stay the same"
1:31 Acting skills on point! Someone give this man an Oscar.
Dork😹
It’s better than a lot of similar scenes in movies
Every time I watch one of your videos I always feel so motivated to change my habits for the better and I do it for a few days then give up and I’m honestly sick of feeling like shit all the time because of my own choices. This sounds very manageable and I wanna try to stick to the two day rule. Thanks!
Look good, feel good, play good. This philosophy helps motivate me going to the gym.
discipline is the key to succeeding at everything
From a guy who does maximum 10 push ups a day I only can say you are wonderful Matt
watch this channel for motivation ua-cam.com/users/TheMiamiTrainer
RiꜱᴇnHᴇᴇd if you’re doing 10 push ups everyday that’s not going to increase it or make you a lil packed. everyday add 1 to your max nbr and try to beat it.
I personally do 20 push up so that’s 5x which is 100 and the extra that I can do.
Left to our own devices - cell phones, computers, etc. - we will fail.
Well played, sir! 👊🏻
I've loosely followed this rule for the past year and it's amazing how much this has affected my life. Love your content ❤️
This is a great reminder for people to get back on track. Even for some of us in our late 20s and early 30s.
James Clear discusses this in his book Atomic Habits. “Never miss twice” he calls it.
“Fingers crossed I don’t get hit by a bus.” 😂
Im gonna use this for my studies. Thanks Matt.
Been using this rule for a year and it has definitely helped me become more consistent with exercising!
I recently found your channel. Your videos have been inspiring. What you share is very practical and i see where i can make changes for the good. Thanks for all you do.
