The Howl campfire firepit, is a pretty revolutionary little heat making device. The howl campfire not only mimics the ambiance of a real fire (as do many other propane fire pits), but it actually puts out a staggering amount of heat as well. Certainly the best propane firepit available, but the Howl Campfire does come at a cost.

Imagine trying to explain to your wife why you need a $1200 propane heater 😂, definitely one of those end up on the couch at the end of the conversation 🤣
Hopefully the howl of the propane-powered flames will block out the sound of my bank account howling in pain.
They're pretty audible, so there's hope!
@@LastLineOfDefense Jokes aside, these are super neat. However, I'll hold out for the eventual Howl Mini (Howl Pup?) -- something cheaper and less taxing on cargo space.
Also, Randall owes me a prototype if he makes the Howl Pup happen. lol
That’s some insane $ for a fire pit, no matter how cool it is.
yea all this goofy shit is ridiculously priced
its a new resource, take it or leave it.
Innovation almost always comes at a cost, unfortunately - especially when it’s taken on by a small startup. But like I said in the video, i agree, it is an expensive product.
@@LastLineOfDefense It’s not just expensive though. It’s almost laughable how much it costs.
@@PNWCamper1955 And the fuel consumption alone is wild compared to other capable propane fire pits. just 6 hours off a 20lb tank? Yikes. It's an awesome product for sure. BUT insanely expensive startup and operating costs. It's honestly the only reason I prefer Ignik vs LavaBox... Yeah, the LavaBox can output more BTU's but the fuel consumption is where you need to outweigh the actual benefit of those added btu's...
Nice, I look forward to seeing the product take off.
Seems like the perfect companion to a tripod camp grill.
i love it, thanks
Woohoo I thought this is what you were loading in that Instagram post. 😂
Haha indeed it was!
@@LastLineOfDefenseI love the design work that went into this thing. It really is expensive, but I but sounds worth it.
This looks like a great product and I want one but I think they need to find a way to bring the cost down and make it smaller or at very least have folding legs and square it off. It looks like a pain to pack. They’re on to something though.
Agreed- They should modify the legs to a spindle style you can screw in for setup & stow internally for travel. I’d bet they find a way to reduce the cost in the next gen, when Mike said it was **expensive** I thought he was going to drop an $899 price tag but $1,300 🤯
@@484465 Totally. I usually have no problem splurging on camping gear either but this is just outside the realm of any justification. It feels wasteful.
With every fire pit, you get an autographed picture of Loki the “wolf dog”.
Gonna be watching this one first thing in the morning. 👍
Hopefully this is a product that can inspire other companys to use the tech and we can get better fire pits in campsites. Awesome vid as usual man thanks
There's old-timey words for things like "official UA-cam filming space". Here's one: Studio.
Eh, it's just a wall with a bunch of boxes and a few printers in it. "UA-cam filming space" sounds more ghetto, which it is, haha.
way too Gucci for me at $1300!
Yeah you'd have to use it a fair bit definitely to justify the cost
The new Ignik Firecan Elite is 50k BTU, vs the Howl at 62k but one is $250, lasts much longer and is much more packable vs $1,300.
Yeah, BTU isn't a very accurate measurement of felt warmth. Firecans are cool (I have Lavabox), but they put out heat straight up to be blown away. If there's no wind at all, and you kind of stand above them, and manage to not burn your clothes with the flame moving around - they do put out some heat. Certainly the price is right, and they provide good ambiance - but for actual warmth, nothing touches the Howl currently. Is it worth the price? Eh, to some people, but not all.
@@LastLineOfDefense Good take. You are right in that BTU aren't the only measurement of heat, but they're probably the most measurable. I like the Howl, a lot, but with a Firecan with lava rocks there's also emanating heat. I believe the Howl is definitely warmer, just don't know that the higher output is worth 5x+.
I only mention all this because overlanding has moved towards a totally inaccessible price point, where costs aren't correlated to expenses, but to the market. I'm certain these guys invested a ton of time and resources to bring this to life, but so did every startup, many of which do value accessibility.
@SD8_ yea. I'm with you. I'll be waiting for the more realistic brand making the same thing, or actually tackling it in my garage with some tubing and a welder.
Very cool
Wow😳 Mind blowing RD and technology 🤯 I totally understand the price point now.👍👍
I'm curious how this compares to the lava box. I have one of those and it works great.
That looks badass. Too bad I don’t have money to buy one, haha.
YT put up a “mix” of your videos so this current one is the thumbnail and it took me until 12:51 to realize that blonde who I thought had no relation to the video was Paris Hilton. 😂😂😂
need a mini-howl !
the yelp.
Very cool. Even more expensive and uses a ton of propane so i'm out, but very cool
Could you do an early Xmas buying list?
When one of the guys said that it was so complex it couldn’t be made anywhere else made me chuckle.
Calm down good sir.
Super duper cool. It's expensive but for my build I'm actually more concerned about the size. I have no where near enough space for it in my Jeep.
Jeeps can be tight, but you might be surprised. If you have room for a bundle of wood, you probably have room for a Howl.
Nothing better than enjoying the serene outdoor nightscape while sitting next to a roaring fossil-fuel burning jet engine! I want 2.
Double duty and use it at home in the backyard when you’re to lazy to start a fire. That would speed up the recoupe of the price tag
You're onto something. We've been having the full campfire experience in some pretty cool places: the back deck, the trailhead, the ski area parking lot, etc. A buddy in Alabama is about to install one on the deck of his fishing boat. Definitely opens up some options, including the freedom in a burn ban.
That's my plan for sure! 👍
Do you like using this more than the bio light fire pit?
BioLites, Solo Stoves, Breeos, etc. solve for some issues. But since they burn wood, you can't use them in a burn ban.
Love the fire-pit! Seeing these videos makes me antsy awaiting the yearly Gift Guide! Any plans on one of those this year?
I think it’s a clever design, but I don’t think I could put up with the noise. I even prefer to wait longer for my coffee and use an alcohol stove just for the peace and quiet 😂
Yeah, I forgot to mention in the video that this prototype unit is louder than the production units. However my guess is that the production units would still be a little louder than others that don't have the barcoals.
It's 1299.00 if your curious, that's crazy money for what it is think it needs to be around 700.00 for most people to be able to afford it. Neat tech but unrealistic for probably most of your viewers.
NEED,NEED,NEED,A $1300 FIRE PIT!
*Hank Hill has entered the comment section.
The price is tough but I get it and would actually pull the trigger, but the lack of folding legs might be a deal breaker for me. Ugh.
41:57 Excuse me sir, it's actually Northglenn, not Thornton. 😉
I run a propane fire pit instead of building a campfire. Only purpose is some national parks don’t allow anything but propane during fire bans.
I like them propane fire cans better (: small and compact. Definitely a small niche market for this pricey howl product.
When are these beanies coming Mike?!
Here's an idea... buy a $30-$50 propane burner stand used for turkey frying or seafood boils. Then, put a
Maybe I’ll try it. I’d guess something like that would work, albeit you’d need to be closer and heat would be much higher and it’d be less ideal for warming your body/legs. A little more cumbersome and less effective, but cheaper for sure
Yep, I get it. I'm just saying that if the big selling point of this fire pit is the IR heat, there are cheaper ways to get that radiated heat. One idea is putting cast iron onto any type of fire pit. I just used the propane stand as an example because they are really cheap. @@LastLineOfDefense
Super cool that they went through how it works, but are they not worried about someone ripping this off in some form?
Great question. It's a pretty revolutionary tech. We're happy to share about it because 1) the US Patent Office is protecting us stateside) and 2 it's way too difficult and precise for an Alibaba knock-off factory to replicate.
$1,300 damn 😮
Tropane Pank!
That's a cool product. Besides for the weight and price, I've also made it a point to never buy the gen 1 of anything.
I'm a big gen 1 / early adopter / help pay for innovation type of guy honestly. But yeah, the 2nd gen often is improved upon, but sometimes more expensive.
@@LastLineOfDefense that's awesome that you help drive innovation and bring new products to the market! I try to be a buy once cry once kind of guy.
@@MisterTengu We're pretty aligned on the buy once cry once mentality. That's a lot of why it took us three years to come to market. Couldn't in good conscience let customers be our guinea pigs. That said, a man's got to have a code, and yours is a good one.
With that much snow I figured you were just in your yard.
I will spend 1300 dollars on a gas fire when hell freezes over!
Plus I'm in Florida. Nice and warm!
it needs to be $1k or under 😊
I finished paying for mine 2 days ago and had no idea the engineering that went into the making of this product. The info will be good around the Howl unit, explaining to all benefiting from it just how complex the engineering is when designing the unit.
Not exactly accurate. I have a propane setup for warmth in an open area. They exist and output a lot of heat.
This is however, smaller🤷🏻♂️
Oh yeah - I have rocket style, and the big bucket style ones - but both different concepts and wouldn't really be viable in the same settings. But in a relatively enclosed space, they do work!
Super bad A. I hope they patented the hell out of it! Well over $1300 worth of “low” volume manufacturing. At 6hrs of burn time, will it freeze a 5gallon tank? My
Better watch out Hallmark got sued for using her picture with that phrase.
Answer: NO!
I think it’s the term “piece of kit” that makes it “hipster” and kinda 🌈
Haha yeah, I don't disagree - though I never used those words in the video I'm talking about.
LMAO howly sh*t thats expensive!
