Adding extra oxygen(air) to your flame actually induces rust. And they make a yellow teflon tape for securing threads when using gas, also blue handle ball valves are not rated for sealing gas, they are not machined to the proper tolerances, you need a yellow handled one rated for gas. Thanks for the demo though.

Actually, adding oxygen to the flame increases the amount of yellow flame as opposed to Blue. More appealing for fireplace use as opposed to grill use. That's the whole purpose of the Venturi application here..
What was the total cost for this setup??
When you made the hole through the bottom pan for the burner pipe, did you use anything to seal around that hole??

Well done. Great ideas. Since the threaded rod fits so well over the valve tang, you could probably double nut the end of the rod and never worry about spread or twist when turning the valve.

For future reference you can cut the aluminum with your miter saw with no issues. Great job overall.
That depends on the type of blade you are using, and what else you are cutting
If you are cutting aluminum followed by copper using a cheap blade, you create an explosive that will hurt you pretty bad
@@cameronb8503 When I was in the wholesale aluminum business for pool and patio enclosure product and we would precut beams (1/4" thickness) for our customers, we had a plywood blade mounted backwards to cut the aluminum. For this application, any carbide tipped blade in a mitre saw will cut through the corner aluminum stock he's using as if it were butter.

I’m super Interested in making something similar. I was just given a bunch of veneer stone that I plan to built the pit with, will probably make the guts a lot like yours. Do you have any recommendations on what to use for the fire pan??
To cut aluminum you can also use any table saw/ circular saw/ miter saw or any other powered saw... wood cutting blades work great for cutting aluminum.. in fact most wood working tools do a fine job on aluminum.. its soft enough, as long as you go slow and take your time you will do no damage to your blades or drill bits.. also dont use a blue handle ball valve, yellow handled valves are rated for gas.. but overall great project.. very similar to the one I built

But I was doing the math, I loaded a cart in Home Depot web page and I’m up to $80 so far with out the fire pit itself and rust paint. Bottom line it’s cheaper to buy a small cheap one. However if I ever wanted to customize my own I’ll have you to thank.
Its all personal preference! But yeah they are more affordable now. When I was looking just a fire ring was $100 itself.

I dont know if it was already mentioned but some lp rated threadtape would be a solid addition near the regulator and mixing coupling.

Good call. The hole I drilled in the bottom to hold the black pipe has enough clearance to drain out water. But the more holes the better!

I ordered all of tbr parts and everything went together great.
For some reason tho, the igniter won't work. If I look closely and click the button, I see a spark. Unfortunately, if I turn the gas on and try to light it with the spark it doesn't work. I have to use a lighter. Any ideas?
I had issues with the lighter as well. ended up being easier to toss a match or use a lighter unfortunately.

For connections with propane gas is best to use yellow Teflon.
I was thinking of building one and just found this. With that size flame and flow at the end of the video how long wo you get with that tank of propane? Are you happy with the number of holes you drilled and the diameter of them?
I would use two nuts. The first attaches the rod to the valve, the second locks the first into place.
Great video. How many burns/sittings will the tank last say each burn about 3 hours.
As for the propane freezing up, if you were to use a larger tank such as a 30 lbs or larger, you would solve your problem.

Burner was resting on 2 fire bricks and covered in lava rocks. 1/2 pipe

Also could you place the valve between the burners and the air mixer? I want the valve at the pit and the mixer close to the tank which is 15’ away from burners.
Id be careful there, as once the air mixes with the gas it becomes "more" flamable than just straight Propane.
How long does the tank last?
Could the air mixer be installed say 10-15’ away from the pit closer to the propane tank? Does that impact its effectiveness?
Might cause inconsistent flame due to turbulence within the hose if the mixer is further away from the ignition point
did you bury a copper line to go to the fire pit? if so what size did you use? did you wrap it in a sleeve or just run it underground?

So funny, I was a little worried the flame would like like a kkk cross but it looks great!! It probably won't last, the pipes will most likely rust quickly, hope not, but it looks really good. And I'm really impressed with the wingnut for the extended control, what a really clever idea, I was thinking a cotter pin or something.

Did you use the regulator off of the propane tank or did you just go straight hose off of the propane tank to your air mixer?

Having a propane fire pit myself, a standard 20# tank would supply a fire of that size for roughly 2-3 hours. As a little side note: I always prefer to use large natural media like large lava rocks or feather rock because if you turn your pit on low, within 15 minutes the rocks get red hot and the flame looks much bigger, brighter, and the radiant heat is much hotter than with a full flame with glass media.

Dude I love this build! I’m actually trying to get everything together to do my burn pit. I have a couple of questions,
1) did you drill the holes on the side of the pipe or the top of the pipe?
2) Near 14:43 how did you get the burner to mount to the fire pit at the base?
1. I tightened the pipe then drilled holes slightly off center from the top of the pipe.
2. I drilled the hole just enough for the pipe to fit through and it was propped up there on a fire brick so really just gravity. Its not air tight but it lets the water drain out which works.

I used just a standard regulator off the shelf also you can see the exact on in the item list in the video description. it was rated max 80,000 BTU per hour. You can go big with a high pressure regulator if you want! The holes were just the first step in my stepper bit (I believe it was 1/8)

Im actually working on a video doing a check in as well as some upgrades. The #1 upgrade is going to be a high flow regulator. Also I would not have spent the time on the gas flow valve - it wasnt nearly as helpful as I expected.

I thinking in doing a fire pit. But I'm still not sure if I do it the tradicional way or a propane way..
It depends on how high you have it. On cold nights we turn it to full blast, and other nights just a light. I have never used a full tank in one night.
I can say, that when we entertain no one wants to be near a smoky fire so the propane has been great. Also we can start a roaring fire in 5 seconds, and just as easy put it out.

Nope, the melting point of iron is so high you will never get close.
I'm sure this topic has been buried in the comments somewhere but since it is going outside, don't just protect the outside portions of the wood skirt. Go ahead and hit all six sides of those boards for a longer lasting effect.

You provided some good information BUT did you ever seal the gas pipes with pipe dope or teflon tape??? VERY DANGEROUS in black pipe. Rust will be an issue and leaks are going to happen.

Hi mate , I’ve done exactly the same as you with the air mixer inline however it’s horizontal rather than vertical as my fire pit is built into my decking and is floor level. Burn is no good with yellow flame, smoke and not that high a flame. 15mm copper pipe from the bottle about 3 mtr to the air mixer inline fitting then about a half a mtr rubber pipe to burner. Any idea what could be wrong?
Hey! So id start to break down each element and test results. Try removing air mixer and see results. Then try removing stones and see if its a lack of oxygen issue. If that does do it for you, perhaps try purchasing a high flow regulation (The type used with turkey fryers) and see if just more flow fixes it.
What are you using for stones? DId you use black iron pipe or a differnt burner? Is it cold out where you are?
it burns badly with or without stones, initially I made up the burner using 15mm copper pipe but recently changed to a purpose built stainless steel burner in a pan as I thought it would help but still the same.tried taking the air mixer out but still he same. Can’t see what I have done different to a pro set up ...the regulator is a 37millibar and temp outside is 16deg Celsius. The length of run from bottle to burner is about 3 mtr

Could you have used a standard gas key (used on fireplace) that has varying lengths to adjust flame instead of having to fashion one with the blue handle and threaded pipe?
Yes, that would have been an easier way I just didnt want the extra expense that comes with those ($30 vs $5) but I wish I would have now

Do the rocks make the flames spread out?
The valve became an issue as I cut the threaded rod a bit short. If i did this again i would has used flex gas tubing and a standard log lighter valve to make things easier.
Nice video, have you had to refill the tank yet? If so any idea how much time you got out of that tank.
Yeah we have refilled a couple times but we have had it running for 6+ hours at a time with no problem. One thing I didn't expect is that on a cool night (50-60) the tank discharges fast enough to freeze up the tank and regulator. I ended up floating the tank in a cooler of water to keep it from freezing.
First I would like to thank you for making this video. I have a lot of ideas, but rarely pull the trigger and make it happen. This project is very impressive and it looks like you did a fantastic job. I have 2 questions. 1) Are there any changes that you would make if you had to do it over again? 2) Approx how many hours do you get off of a full tank (6+).
If I had to do this again - I would have installed the gas regulator right at the tank rather than under the burner. The majority of my time on this project was spend trying to get the knob to mount to the side and its only slightly more convenient. Also I would just scrap the electric lighter - it can easily short itself and then doesn't tell work, where as a grill lighter works every time!
I dont have a good answer on the tank time - but we have had several nights of drinks with friends out by the fire on a single tank.

I wouldnt use it in a pressure application like water, but this is a no-low pressure use.

So how much propane do you burn through. I’ve wanted to build one similar to this but wondering how much propane would you actually burn through in one night of relaxing out side
That seems to be a reoccurring question, but not one I can answer. Ive never run out of a tank in one night
For the air mixer, anytime you use thread tape for a flammable gas, you need to use yellow thread tape
How much rock did it take?
I bought the same stuff, but the problem is that the 3/8” union doesn’t thread properly into the propane extension, you only get about 1/2” a turn before it won’t go anymore. Any ideas?
Interesting, I did see some small differences between a course thread and fine thread for any size. Perhaps its that.
@@RoccosModernLifestyle I was able to solve it by going to a local plumbing supply shop, they found a fitting that worked. The 2nd issue I have is that I'm not getting anywhere near the amount of flame that you are, maybe half? The regulator on the hose product you linked to was 80k BTU, is that what you are running?

As someone who sells custom fire pits, I give you props. But to add why the are $$$$. UL testing is not cheap, along with liability. Also, the products that most manufactures use today our high quality product that can hold up for multiple years instead of a few seasons. I get why people want to save, but, as a liability level, I would watch what you do regarding these custom projects.

Potter's Work it should last 2 or 3 hours on high and 6-10 on a lower setting.

Riley Eccleshall You can use a regulator from a old propane grill. I made my own fire pit useing the regulator, burners and the ignitor from my old grill. I bought a smoker and had no use for the propane grill. I had a full tank of propane and decided to make a fire pit. It was cheap it didnt take near the time and cost this fire pit did and it looks good too. I paid for lava rocks only and the rest was FREE people throw all kinds of good stuff away.You dont have to go through all the time and money to achieve the same thing. I dont want to take away or diminish the work he has done here on this video its fine work and it cost a fraction of what they charge at Lowe's or Home Depot. If you keep your eyes open and know what you need you can find everything you need on big trash days in your city and it will cost you nearly nothing.
