I think the intake holes on the air mixer are generally intended to be on the propane side not the burner side, but the air mixer seems to work that way. Try flipping the air mixer.
Cool project. I made one but I used a single pipe in the middle of the box. I used Citristrip to strip the old paint off the can and painted it with high temp paint.
Are you happy with the single pipe down the middle, opposed to the H pattern? I’m hoping to cut costs and not need to by all the couplers and adapters if the single pipe is sufficient. Also, how did you remove the paint? It’s such a pain to get off
@@ZachBatchelder yes. The single pipe down the middle provides plenty of flame. To remove the paint I used a product called Citrisrtip. I applied it and let it sit for 24 hours and it softened the paint up. I used a putty knife to scrape it off. Stripping the paint off was the worst part of the project. Lol. I then painted the can with some high-temp paint. I’ve only used it a couple times since I made it and the paint looks like it’s holding up so far.
@@timjchickthanks! I’ll get some citristrip. I removed the paint from the exterior pretty easily with a wire wheel on an angle grinder but the inside of the box is too hard to get to. Hopefully the Citristrip will work. Thanks!
If you get a 40mm ammo can, it is easy to store the hose assembly, and 2 1 pound propane cans for portability. Also, take the rubber seal from the lid, and it acts as a stand for the whole unit keeping it 2 inches off the ground. Lastly, drill a hole for lighting it easier.
That's how it's done. Nice job. I only worry about the rubber hose being close to the heat source. One add on I would do is to get four of those plumbing straps and screw them at each corner on the bottom of the can for legs to raise it up a bit for cooling and air flow under the can. I'm making one for sure...
FYI you might want to look up how the air valve works because having a reducer right after it. Really reduces its ability to work, specificity saying a straight piece is required right after it that it comes with. As well you can’t just paint over the original can paint as it will fail and cause your hi temp paint to come off
Great video and thanks for sharing your build. I have a 24" diameter propane fire pit but it's a pain lugging it in and out. Checking out Lava Box and Ignik but the prices are inflated in my opinion. I think you've inspired me to make one. Best of luck to you 👍🇺🇸
Any specific reason for the H pattern? I'm hoping to save on costs a bit and am considering using a single 1/2” pipe down the middle, rather than the H shape configuration and wondering what difference it’d make.
Cool project! You inspired me to try building one myself, in anticipation of summer burn bans. Gotta have a fire when camping! Have to tried it out in a trip yet? Curious to hear how hot the bottom got. Thinking about adding some kind of feet/legs to get it up off the ground a bit.
Nice build sir! Was wondering what size btu air mixer did you use for that build? I keep getting multiple sizes when I look online and it’s saying : 90,000, 150,000, and 300,00 btu’s.
Great video. Would you by chance be able to provide the SKU numbers of the parts you used that you purchased from Menard, I'd like to order them. Appreciate your time
I had 2 braided lines. What melts is the rubber inside the connection point ...may need to make an extender with some black pipe to keep it away from the flame even more
@@thomasrmcdonald1 I under if you put fire proof insulation at the bottom and around the cut out, if that would cut down the heat enough to keep it from melting
That recessed valve port is sick bro! Love that idea.

the hose fits in this box also

I just set the lid under it and the rubber hose dose get hot but as long as u don't touch it wile it's on it works good
Did you ever put a final parts list together for this build. Looks like it works great and ready to build one of my own
Bo i did not
did u use a orifice going from The propane connection at the box to the burner.
Do you have links for the Air mixer and reductions for 3/8 pipes to connect the propane hose ?
pretty cool. put a little hole in the side, down near the burner, so you can put your lighter in to light it safer.
Mite be a good idea
Good stuff, not bad. I'd back that hose up a little away from all that heat, but that's just me.

Ok I will look into it
Good video. What size holes did you drill.
1/8
Thanks mate, awesome job, and will save me some money, after I was considering buying a commercially made one. Appreciate you sharing this.
THANKS FOR WATCHING

no real reason
what type of propane hose is that.? Seems like it allows more gas to pass than normal ones I have seen. Cool project
Just one with a regular from Amazon

Yes it works good I use about 5lb of propane a night

It didn't say I just got the first one that came up
what size pipe r u using
I was your 100th subscriber 🎉
Hell yeah thanks
cool project, thanks for posting.. where did you get the piece with the air entrainment holes and what is that piece called..or did you make it?
Amazon and its call propane air valve i think
Can’t find that part anywhere lol
Very nice. Where you cut out the can to fit the valve (hose connection) in, did you close it in or leave it open on the sides?
It's open and I can attach the hose there
@@Garagepointzero nice
@@Garagepointzero I think he is referring to the 2 square plates it looks like you welded to each side of the connector.
@@Ever_Explore yes the is closed in was just tying stuff
Cool project! What are the brass fittings used for this?
Just adaptors for change sizes
Perfect gas
Love it! Where do you buy your regulator hose?
Amazon

I do not have them
@@Garagepointzero no worries, thx for the response
What was the name of the store you found all the 3/8 inch pieces at? I cant seem to find that size.
Manards
what size holes did you drill for the burner
1/8 works good so far
So what is it for. Cooking?
Just sitting around the fire
Some states issue fire bans, you’re allowed to use propane stoves instead
Really nice.
How about some fold down feet?
Most of the time I just put the lid under it
Can you use a galvanized pipe ? Or what’s better?
I would not because it would give off an nasty fumes until it all burnt off.
how much roughly total on supplies inclunding the ammo box? thanks
I didnt add it up I am not sure
Does it smoke any? Trying to figure out if my holes I drilled are too small or not.
No it dose not
Any issues with the propane line melting at the connection point ? ..happened to me 2 times in 2 days
It has got hot but not melted off yet I was thinking about buying a braided line for that reason

Looks great! What did you use to secure the 3 Ts together?
Also, what is the tape you used in the pipe, is that just plumbing tape?
Everything was screws together and I use teflon tape for propane
Amazing ideal....Peace
What was the measurements you used for the flap that you cut out and re installed??? I like that idea of recessing the nipple.
I didn't really measure it just lined it all up and eyballed it
how long does the small tank last ?
I use about 5 lbs a night
cool idea
Thanks
That looks great.. How many BTUs is the air mixer valve rated for.
I am not sure just got on Amazon and ordered one
Hi you need more airflow to burner, then you will have a clean blue flame, yellow flame equals to much gas not enough air
But nice build anyways
Thanks I will try that
The box gets hot on the bottom because the rocks are being heated
i was thinking about throwing the rock away
I like it. Maybe better put some short folding legs on it. That bottom will be hot.
i use the lid under it
