What I really like about the white is that you made sure to mimic how marble isn't just white stone with black streaks but instead a complex web of crystalized limestone. It really helps add dimension and randomness to it
I've just tried this with rattle cans and gotta say, the bases came out better than I expected. Can imagine that they'd be better with an airbrush, but I'm so happy that this technique was so simple! Thanks a bunch for sharing the tutorial!!
DUUUUDE!!! That’s brilliant! I’ve got some terrain that I wanted to do in a faux marble but didn’t wanna go through the old school way of it because it’s so tedious. Will definitely be using this technique!
Frankly, the black one looks a hot mess, and I'd experiment with some other colour combos for it, but the white... omg that's such a good result. Genius idea with the masking technique. I must find an application for this.
Again a great technique, hadn't thought to use it on armour but have some interesting idea's with stencils on top. Googling marble gives some great idea's for colour (I like gold, mottled pattern of med-dark greens on the next layer sort of following the veins and then black (was going to try a couple of thin black layers to try and add depth but got impatient). One thing I found looked great was to do a couple of very smooth coats of the glossiest varnish I could find on the base then add matt pigments over the top in some places and the joints to look like dirt and rubble. The contrast worked oddly well.
That is a great idea! I bet that really sells the crumbling rock look? There’s so many wonderful different types of marbling in rock, it’s fun just having a look to see them all for inspiration!
Very interesting technique. I haven't quite committed on how I'm going to do the marble effect on my Glutos figure yet, but I'm definitely going to try this out on a few test bases
This technique looks great, I'll have to experiment with it, I don't know if I'll have much success with it because I'm wanting that marble color to be the armor for some Votann I'm painting. Thanks for a great video.
This is excellent and I fully intend on using this at some point with my painting! You explained it really clearly and I feel better about attempting this now. How long do you let the paint dry considering we're airbrushing, here, about a minute or two at most?
For someone with no airbrush and not the right colours for a spraycan can this effect be emulated with drybrushing? Or does it just catch the wipe too much?
My partner loves chess im making him a custom set for Christmas 🤞 I’m going to use this to make the clay look like marble thanks so much for the video im a lot more confident now 😂
@ thank you yeah he does a lot for me so want to make him something he will really love and put time into it and yea once it’s done I’ll see if I can tag you on instagram or facebook or something 😁
Love this! Question; I'm planning to use this technique on a trophy base, they aren't perfectly flat and have some recessed and raised sections. What would you recommend for securing the stencil tight against the surface? Thanks for your time!!
Thank you for watching! I’ve found that with awkward areas it helps to try and just spray small sections at a time so that you can try to get the wipe to stay tight. If the recesses are really fine it not really doable but you can use tools like a paper clip to push the wipe firm again whatever it is you’re working on
I did a trophy base and it worked really well. I had to go over some local areas around the stepped areas again with white. I pushed the wipe into to the steps, the sticky paint kept it in place.
Which part of the celestian were you thinking? The smallest thing I've done this on is a space marine shoulder pad, but that's still quite a bit bigger most of the areas on a SoB model
@@g00gle5ucks5 😂😂😂 my response wasn’t pissy, genuinely curious to see why you would watch another video on a technique if you already know how to do it

Thanks! Yeah white marble has a lot of complexity in it and it’s really fun to play with that when painting it
Short and to the point. Thank you for showing, esp. including the black one instead of just a white.

I will try these on the Saguinary Guard. Nice white marble with Gold/bronze Trims
That sounds awesome! Would love to see how you get on!

O lo lkh
White one looks great
Thanks, i'm eager to try this!
It worked! Thanks for the tutorial.
I am going to try the silver/grey/white version of this to decorate my air dry clay items, I will let you know how rattle cans worked.
That's awesome! Can't wait to hear how you get on!
Omg best hack ever!!!! Thankyou for this tip this is super helpful for me! Thanks a lot
No problem at all! Glad it's helped :)
Amazing works

This is cool, I'll have to try this at some point, maybe on a base
Thanks mate! Yeah, it would look great on a smooth, flat base!
Does anyone have a recommended brand of wet whipes? The ones I got just tore instead of stretching
Get baby wipes. Standard wet wipes are basically wet paper, where wipes ment for babies have that but if stretch to them.
Great guide! Looks great
Thanks very much!
I'm doing this effect on my movement trays....gonna need a big baby wipe
This would be great for natural rusting
Why do I feel like used dryer sheets stretched would do the same thing as the wet wipes?
They might well do! I’m not familiar with dryer sheets unfortunately but anything that goes stringy like in the video should work
awesome i loved it
Thanks!
I will try this on mahut model from Conquest!
Would love to see your results!
What's the best best place to get model paints, hobby tools, and other supplies?
Where in the world are you? If you’re in the UK try The Outpost (there’s a link in the description)
@@SpensPainting I live in the US, specifically in Arkansas if that helps.
Reckon this will be the go to for my Blood Angels Bladeguard Veteran shields!

That’s so awesome to hear! And yeah that’s about right, we really done want it to fully dry and the wipe get stuck to it
Great video mate!
Thanks very much!
Followed you here from twatter, thanks for uploading. Going to go try this now!
Thank you for the follow! Would love to see how you get on if you share it!
For someone with no airbrush and not the right colours for a spraycan can this effect be emulated with drybrushing? Or does it just catch the wipe too much?
I think you could use a sponge or stipple with a brush for greater effect than drybrushing
when you're cleaning up the edges, do you remove the paint somehow or just paint over it?
Just paint straight over it 😊
Can this be done with brush
Yep! It’s best to use quite a large brush and dab the paint on rather than using lateral movements

Does this work well on infantry models?
It depends on the model really, it works best on smooth surfaces. I have done it on a space marine shoulder pad before and it came out nice
My biggest grief with this technique is finding the correct wipes. All I've tried so far are too firm.
same. same. and same.
Q: Can I use a dryer sheet?
I'm not sure! If it will stretch out and give that fibrous look I would think so!
Im looking for ways to paint my celestians of my sisters army like this, but I think it might be too small

Exact same technique used in every other UA-cam tutorial on marbling.
