What I love most is that everybody knows he has mad skills, but chooses to dial it back for the sake of the song itself, so it sounds like he's playing as if he's part of the band instead of like a "drum cover". Shows how much of a true musician he is.
Perfection. This is exactly what we want from a drummer. We know he has chops for days and can rip all over anything, but he comes in and just slams out exactly what you need in the first take. It's still 100% him, the feel is perfect, the timing is dead on, he left space for everything going on, and if anyone wants more you just say, "Go nuts on take two." And if it's too much you bring it back a notch or two and you've got your tracking done in 15 minutes. That's when the producer says, "Wanna do the rest of the album and then we'll grab lunch?"
This was probably the most ideal performance for a studio I’ve seen in this series. He’s not too heavy on the cymbals and he doesn’t overplay at all. Everything is tight and controlled but damn ngl when I say I wanted to see some chops like some of the other guys knowing how amazing this guy is.
Finally someone who ubderstood what it meant to adapt the playing to the language and not the other way around. Not at all "choppy" when chops wouldn't fit in. I really appreciate that.
This video as well as Portnoy's take made me appreciate Nickelback's drumming. They went for the most danceable choices (four on the floor, 16th note tambourine, basic beat) very reminiscent of disco beats. Which makes their songs a hit
@@KwesiAyoKweRobinson Iconic rock song. Another honorable mention for best Nickelback intro is Follow You Home, off the same album. One of my favorite songs to play to this day haha

Right from the start I had a good feeling. Going from his usual/preferred genre(s) some of the primary differences for this type of song is using about hitting on the bass/guitar riffs without a ton of accents so that you are leaving some very brief moments of silence to fully support what the other instruments are doing. Then open it up more during the chorus which generally are supposed to come off bigger than the verses anyway. Can't be afraid to use less of the kit and and play more sparingly. And as some other comment suggested...we can tell from his intro that he could do a hell of a lot more on this track if he felt so inclined. But didn't in the name of making that song feel the way it does originally without him ever hearing it. While it could be cool to hear what a drummer from a different genre would do to a song while playing within their own genre...seeing a musician play something for the first time outside of their usual comfort zone and showing enough musical knowledge even if the song is in a genre they know little about is at least equally awesome. There is still plenty of room for personal touches while remaining 'in the pocket' of what that song needs without completely changing the overall feel. Solid job!
I haven't heard this Nickelback song but I actually recognized it was Nickelback more from the guitar riffs than Chads vocals (which is kinda crazy )and Kwesi is right its very much the Animal guitar tone and riffage that gives it away as Nickelback
Gibson Loaded with EMGs into Dual Recs for Ryan, Gibsons into Dual Recs for Chad. They both have a couple time and mod effects they use but not for their basic tone. Their production is second to none none which also helps lol
He knows Nickelback (unknown to the host) and so is familiar even with the chord structure and tendencies. Great and appropriate drumming to the track. I throughly enjoyed the other less-familiar drummers going more Gospel on the rock tracks because they were less familiar with them.
I think you're giving these excellent musicians songs that are too easy for their abilities. Let's get some tracks with multiple meters and less standard song structures.
5:00 shout to him shouting out The Smoogies one of my brothers jazz band very dope crew and talented group of musical brothers. If you don’t about i would highly suggest you plug yourself some headphones sit back pop a whine and just let the music take you. Cause man…

Hello @DrumbleOfficial, I follow you here in Brazil, my suggestion for you is to put on OFFICINA G3, any of their songs I would love and I believe that here in Brazil a lot of people will too, and have always been following your work.
after some videos, all gospel drummers in drumble can reduce "wild thoughts" to explore licks/chops when play not gospel's song. we need more wild LOL.
Here's a song you have to get a gospel drummer to do: ua-cam.com/video/c89ZQ6enO-s/v-deo.html Hearing this track without drums, Ray's part does not come to mind at all but it's so amazing!
In this case it’s the control and awareness to limit the chops to the music style instead of going all out as is expected in gospel. That takes discipline and gene awareness.
At 3:05 you mention that you've given Kwesi a metronome to listen to along with the song. Is that not cheating, essentially giving him the songs tempo? He'd have more freedom to come up with absolutely anything if he didn't have the metronome giving "suggestions".

Coheed and Cambria - Fuel for the feeding end
I agree.
by voice i guest that it nikleback, but may be i didn't hear it before or probably i listen it many many years ago and dont remember it

Yep. Fitting the genre💯🫡 it’s smooove
Yea.
Still I would have liked him to go all out after the first chorus,
since the song isn't that exciting.

It helps that he plays to rock music and has some bands he’s listened to so he understands the language and progression a little bit better.

Being a gospel drummer he easily could a went off if he wanted, but he understood the assignment and played for the music, love these videos!

Wow. My Man actually did a phenomenal job all while super laid back chilling with his sunglasses

The song Kwesi is referring to at 4:00 is "Animals" by Nickelback, I think!
I think you tagged the wrong time. Lol
A drummer who looks to Jeff Pocaro for inspiration is a drummer I want in my band. I love that he loves TOTO.
So clean!
He’s got mad feel n groove ❤.
You should do one how they think the song goes. And against after they hear the original. So these amazing guys can go all out

He is so pro dude. He made the song better.
I request “The Distance” by “Cake” I don’t think people will play it like the track so it should be interesting to hear people’s takes

Hey guys! Great video. Are there drum samples used in the mics?
I love these videos, would like some of the Gospel Drummers to try some Slipknot, now that would really be a challenge!, 😅
Just did some slipknot!!

dang what happened to nickelback lol they actually sound GOOD now lol used to hate their vocal tone, but i actually like that song lol
