Precision Freehand Drilling to Dead-on Accurate Depths

- SHOP NOTES: Some drilling tasks require that we take the tool to the wood rather than the other way around, and when we freehand holes it's often important to drill to an exact dept. But what's the best way to accomplish this? In this video I'll share a few options that might be worth your consideration.

I have the plastic collet style stop. I do not use it often. I find my units slips easily.
Like you I prefer the split style metal stops. These work for me.
Thanks for the layout tape tip. I did not know about this. I will have to get some, very useful.
Dave.
It is very handy. Since recording this, I found a version of it that has both inches and metric. I link to it in the video description if you want to check it out. Scott
Great tips. Using tape is okay for a hole or two but as mentioned it can move easily. I think I'd like a collar combined with some kind of extension so i don't have to tighten the collar on the flutes. The plumbing washer solution looks like a good one too.
I used that idea of a longer collar with the set screw above the flutes an a plastic (Delrin) stop. I’ll post a pic of it on www.MyGrowthRings.com chat.
Scott: nice review of the various options for depth stops. I think the plumbers washers and diy shop made wooden cylinders rank #1 and a distant #2. Too bad that the "gadget" at the end of the video didn't work out...what claims did the manufacturer make? It appeared to be a "multipurpose" tool that we all know and love...jim
Great general interest video.
I like these because I don’t do EVERYTHING on a Shopsmith.
On the center punch, I bought a Spring Tools Woodworking Assortment Set of Spring Punches. I have to say that I really like them.
Great tips! I always enjoy and appreciate your reviews of various products!
Thanks. Most of these have earned a place in my shop.
Interesting. Thank you.
Hank you for all the tips
Another very well done, interesting video.
By the way, I ordered, use and like very much the WEN 4” hand power planer. The WEN tools get 2 thumbs up. Thanks for the information you provide.
That’s awesome Jon. I’ve never had a need for one, but I’ve always wanted to own one! I have that problem with a lot of things.
not on subject; you're being referenced on face book posts regarding shop smiths; you're becomeing the defacto shop smith "sensei"...good work, thanks
Thanks. Personally I would take everything I say on FB with a grain of salt. Typically I am rushed when I occasionally check in on FB, and I notice that far to often I answer a question that’s not being asked! In real life I like to take more time to understand the situation before I answer. Thanks for the compliment, though! Scott
Good overview!
Thanks, Albert.
Thanks, Albert.
Happy to see you using a Worx Drill and not some overpriced green Kool-aid drill...
I’ve been very pleased with it, too.
@MyGrowthRings I have 19 Worx products... ive liked them so much I'm slowly upgrading to Brushless tools... the switch driver is awesome for pocket holes.... I thought it was gimmicky when I bought it but honestly I'm thinking about buying a few more
@@tomhostetter8516 I’ve been making the same switch and the Nitro tools are excellent.
While You were showing your tape measures, I noted that the same issue was apparent for a right handed person - that normal usage is - tape unit held in left hand, hook placed and unit pulled to required length - Numbering is UPSIDE DOWN! Would be correct for a left hander! WHY NO RIGHT HANDER Tapes??
True, almost all tape measures are left handed. FastCap makes a Lefty/Righty tape, but it's inches only, so it doesn't work for me.
Wondering if the internal part of the Arco Tools plastic adjustable stop can be reversed (flipped around) for different bit sizes? Also, the one that takes a cap screw ... my 3D printer is calling me to fire it up and make my own.
No, they have the same size opening on both ends, but there’s a chance that the tapered mouth on the body may be different sizes. That would actually make a bunch of sense! Yes, you should give 3D printing of any of these a try. Let me know how it works for you. Scott
Coworkers!?!?! You have a job too?!?!?
Yep, I’m a corporate trainer for a German cabinet hardware manufacturer.
