Marius, man, when your companion goes into a seizure and bloody fiery horns start poking their way out of his skull, you don't keep following him into a dark dungeon, you just f'ing run. Run your tail off. Where's your self-preservation instinct bro? /smh.

I've always considered that Tyrael never spoke to Marius... He's never even met him. We see Tyrael on the other side of the chasm, "No, don't do it!"...
But did he realize this had happened during his fight? Meanwhile, Baal has been projecting images at Marius during his whole approach.
Marius pulls the stone free, looks at it, and Tyrael is suddenly there with him in a dream-like scene, telling him BY NAME where to go and what to do... And then Tyrael is magically back onto the other side of the chasm, somehow getting surprised by the freed Baal.
That was all Baal telling Marius what to do. After all, Baal even masked his visage when visiting Marius later, making him think Baal was Tyrael once more.
Makes a lot of sense. Never understood why Tyrael made a man like Marius face 3 prime evils together alone lol
This cut scene makes so much more sense to me now after reading your observation.
Nice theory. One issue I see is that if Marius had stepped through that gate, Baal's soulstone would have been in Hell where the Hero arrives a little later destroying 2 of 3 stones. Baal himself never crossed into Hell, nor did he suspect Marius creeping around when the 3 Primes opened the gate to begin with.
Baal's idea was to kill Marius when he would try to reach for the Hellgate. But since he never stepped into it - Baal realized that the original plan failed, and started looking for Marius instead. He couldn't kill Marius in the Tal Rasha's tomb, since he was occupied with Tyrael.. It all actually nakes sense now..
@@ViktorFries-v5f I think a simpler explanation is Baal understood the kind of man Marius was and how broken he was. He never expected this poor fool to step into the gate leading into Hell....who would? All of it was deception within another deception. He needed Marius to believe he was following the instructions of Tyrael, that he was still acting with good intentions. All of it was a ploy to get the soulstone out of that place and away from Tyrael. Yes...if Marius got as far as the gate, Baal assumed the three of them, the Prime Evils, would be there to take the stone from him. But the plan wasn't contingent on that. He knew that he could get the stone back eventually no matter what.
Imagine if he was like "Oh, sorry" and stabbed the crystal back into Tal Rasha. BOOM end of franchise

Sooo, indulge me here. Tal-Rasha had no weapons at all. Not only could've Tyrael stabbed him or killed him a thousand times instead of *taking him gently by the waist and throwing him* or *putting a hand on his shoulder and dramatically posing for a stab*, but what were those sounds of a sword fight when the scene cut to the human dude? You also wanna tell me that when he wants he can teleport in 0.01 sec but when he's going to stab someone he slows down to 0.25x?
That wasn't Tal-Rasha - the bald guy fighting Tyrael on the bridge is Diablo, who at this point has mostly taken over the Dark Wanderer's body. Tal-Rasha is the undead mage with Baal's soulstone embedded in his chest.
At that point it’s not Tal Rasha or not really. It was Mephisto
This may be a stretch but Tyrael knew that killing The Wanderer could liberate Diablo. So he was trying to incapacitate the Wanderer without triggering Diablo's awakening. The sword sound may be Diablo's horns leaking from the Wanderer's body and crashing with Tyrael's armor.

Oh yeah, sorry about the mistakes in the naming. I only know Diablo lore from second hand, so I had no idea who was who except for Tyrael.
this cutscene was way more scary when it had donkey kong 64 graphics idk.

In his defense he may have been Terrified by the Lord of Terror and unable to perform up to snuff.
On the other hand it's really cool how he uses his wings in combat here. I wish modern Diablo still had angels do this sort of thing.

How are the graphics so good if the good is from 2000? Is this a remastered version?
Demonic speed? Dude is briskly walking. Some of these cut scenes were confusing. Like, how tf did Mephisto and Co not detect Marius when they were performing the ritual? Blind and zero enhanced senses depicted in the cinematics.
No wonder why the Nephilim seemed really powerful to him. Tyrael is pretty trash. I'd slayed both of those in the time it took him to fumble one.
There's a reason those two (three, in fact) were imprisoned in the soulstones instead of being killed - they just revive in the Hells whenever killed. Imprisoning them was the only way to remove them from the board. It's just Baal's soulstone was damaged, so they had to use a living body to imprison him properly (and Tal Tasha volunteered for it).

Somehow, these remastered videos lost something. In the original version, the battle between Tyrael and the Wanderer is more intense, through the animations, through the sound effects.
I never understood.. how did the dark wanderer and maurius enter tal rasha's tomb if it was sealed? Like, you have to go through the whole horadric cube and staff and crap to get in there, so why were they able to just waltz right in?

What? There is nothing in the game pointing to that. He is only mentioned a few times about being one of the last Horadrim and after a while he said he was afraid of something and just left. He hasn't been heard from since, but there's nothing pointing to the fact that he's dead. Where did you even get that from?
I'm sure they'll bring him back in some future expansion/DLC. Tyrael sells well and a new arc of his story will of course bring in the $.
It'd be for the best. He's kind of a tired character and we need to see other angels.

From the Lore Ive read, its Baal, Mephisto and Diablos brother. The Guy thought by pulling out the crystal hed be saving the human being possesed by Baal, but that just gives complete control of the host to the demon possesing
The thing is Tal-Rasha, a mage who was possessed by Baal and imprisoned in the tomb under the temple. The gem is Baal's soulstone. When Marius pulled it out, he believed he was saving the human host (Tal-Rasha), but in reality what he did was free Baal to control the body.
Marius released Baal, Lord of Destruction (the expansion set was named after him because in act 5 he is the last prime evil remaining to be hunted down). Long ago, a sacred brotherhood of elite magi known as The Horadrim were in pursuit of Baal. Eventually, they managed to track him down. However, The Horadrim were not powerful enough to destroy Baal, and so Tyrael, as an angelic intervention, gave a fragment of the blessed worlstone to The Horadrim. This fragment of the worldstone became known as a soulstone, and it was within this soulstone that The Horadrim was meant to bind Baal's spirit, sentencing the Lord of Destruction to eternal captivity. However, during the battle between The Horadrim and Baal, the soulstone was damaged, and so it could no longer be used to imprison Baal, not on its own anyway. It was then, when the leader of The Horadrim magi, Tal Rasha volunteered to be a secondary layer of protection. And so, The Horadrim locked Baal's spirit inside the soulstone, and then proceeded to tether the soulstone to Tal Rasha's spirit, sentencing Tal Rasha to endure unending pain and agony as his spirit was to wrestle with that of the Lord of Destruction for all eternity. That all changed, of course, when Diablo and Marius found them...
So, that ghost-like person that says "help me" is actually the twisted spirit of Tal Rasha that has been battling Baal for many many years. His cries of agony speaks volumes of the unimaginable pain and torment he has had to endure for such a long time as the Lord of Destruction has toyed with his mind, body and spirit, trying to break free all those years. When Marius removed the soulstone from Tal Rasha's chest, Tal Rasha ceased to exist as Baal took over his mind and body, much like Diablo did to the warrior in Tristram.

That’s Baal creating that conversation in his head. Baal wants him to take the soulstone (which contains Baal) to hell while they fight Tyrael. Meanwhile Tyrael is over there fighting and then gets disarmed from behind by Tal Rasha.
He does take the stone and it’s exactly what Baal wants. And the narration is also to Baal, who he thinks is Tyrael yet again.
Dont worry.. act 3 boss still continue to die from now on to the present
