u r right! I didn't even know there was new Metallica & I came from the day when both were brand new....loved them both....saw both in concert...they both rock... 2 different styles of music

we'll never see another band like Guns N' Roses. The combination of the Slash and Izzy Stradlin's guitars with Steven Adler's drums and Duff McKagan's bass is fuckin' insane. and to complete the combination comes Axl Rose's wonderful voice to rip each and every other bands off!!!

Both are legendary bands who played some of the best songs ever written but personally no one beats the original line up of GNR!!!!!

I saw them both together in concert and was there to see Metallica and left a huge GNR fan, they blew Metallica away.

yeah but if you think about mr brownstone compared to enter sandman, brownstone is the better riff, but sandman has a harder hittin sound and makes it more memorable and so much more popular, i love them both :)

They're two totally different bands :L GnR is Rock/Hard Rock, and Metallica is Thrash/ heavy metal.

Tough..both kick ass. But I would have to choose Metallica. Their first 4 albums were simply amazing...every track.

I saw them both when they tour together in '92.
Metallica stayed rocked while G n' R had a bunch of solos while Axl went in the back for several costume changes.
Both are/were great bands but as far as the show, Metallica got up there and got it done.
I love 'Fuel' - it always gets me amped. Metz FTW, with GNR a very close 2nd.

these are my two favorite bands and i really cant decide between them, they are just too different to compare. there will NEVER be another guns n' roses nor will there be another metallica, they are true rock/metal icons both bands and noone can say else

@nonmusicman Personally I prefer Gun's because they vary more in styl, I like the orchestric stuff with Gun's stuff too like Nov Rain aswell as their heavier stuff, i'd say they are not as commited as they were when the original line up existed ,although I went to their recent tour and they were on form I must say, although I'd love to see the original line up back,the albums of the late 80's and early 90's definately suit my musical taste, I respect your love for metallica, but I love Gun's :)

There's no competition, each band is a completely different genre
GNR were the "big bang" of my generation, but on the other side Metallica is timeless and stands for many generations. That is the difference.
How to compare?
Both are good :)
Metallica is a fucking GOOD heavy metal band. They were even heavier than most (but not all) of the early Megadeth, so they really were the heaviest band going in the early 80's.
As for Guns N' Roses, i'll make it simple : They're my personnal favourite band. I have never heard a band that I like more than Guns N' Roses. Slash is my biggest inspiration in music (even though I play the drums), and I've never heard a guitarist making better solos & licks than Slash.
Both are beasts.
To all the people wondering why this guy is comparing, it's because Metallica and GnR (actually, just Axl) had a big fued in the early 90's.

I know you didn't mean this, but I get really annoyed when people classify Guns N' Roses as a Glam Rock band. They're not. Axl said as much. For example, the reason Axl's hair is all sprayed up in "Welcome to the Jungle" was because he said he wanted to do one hairstyle and never do it again: to mock glam rock bands for emphasis on makeup rather than music.
Guns N' Roses is either a Rock group, Metal group, or Blues Rock (which is how Duff and Slash categorized it).

@HiryuNikai when metallica plays live, its waaaay different than the studio. they tune thier guitars down a half step and some times a whole step. james voice is worse than b4 so its obviously different there. and kirk improvises every solo he plays live. i dont think you have enough facts to back up your comment

as bandas são de estilos completamente diferente uma da outra. Guns N' Roses é uma puta banda, gosto muito do som progressivo deles, já o metalica tem a raiz mais no Heavy Metal, uma outra puta banda q curto muito. Quem tentou querer comparar as 2 bandas não soube escolher bem. Como no comentáriao aqui de baixo são bandas incomparáveis!!!!!

@TheJBSuckBalls and all the songs should have similar levels (volume should be loud for all of them). Too much variance in audio quality too, but me likey the vid nonetheless. GN'R is my personal favourite (every song is so melodically intense) but both bands are very very great. Two different but extremely awesome bands.
I play guitar for 4 years now and I play a lot metallica and some riffs for guns n roses. and my opinion is that metallica definetly has the better guitar riffs

what i think about those 2 bands is : Metallica is the darker side (like songs about death) and Guns N Roses the lighter side (like songs about good times).
they are both equally good IMO, but metallica has more songs...

I agree that neither should be compared to one another. With all due respect to both bands, neither sounded the same after their 1990/91 album releases. Use Your Illusion is grossly underrated as an album, I think, and Metallica's Black Album was their last great work. Or at least their music shifted styles.
Can agree to this. Metallica is easily the greatest metal band of all time, and at their height, no band was more bad ass then Guns N Roses. Period.
Metallica before Making Death Magnetic are awesome. GNR before Slash left and before they made Chinese Democracy also awesome. Its a tie.
