  • You've already seen a few videos with our new-to-us 2004 Jeep WJ. When we got it, it was pretty dirty, and had several electrical faults. Well after showing you the Jeep and fixing those issues, it's finally time to put it on the lift and get a good look underneath. What will we find in a mechanical inspection - will it be good news, or will we uncover frightful things???

    Bought my 04 WJ a few years ago with 105k on it. Has the 4.7HO engine. I had ALL the fluids replaced and a new radiator as I had a pinhole leak. Did the “big seven” battery cable upgrade. Jeep runs like a champ! Looking forward to the next video! Thanks

      Sounds awesome! I got the battery cables on my to-do list as well.

    Thank you for the information as you went through your visual inspection. I just started working on a WJ 2000 4.7 limited and watched your past WJ content to do repairs that I could see during an inspection and feel while driving. I will be following this video series and repair as you repair.

      @@VortexGarage I would like to make a suggestion to help newbies like myself. Can you save us some time by stating torque values? This can be done when the work is done or displayed at the end of the video.When you say "just torque them" for example; ua-cam.com/video/4krXIcGQQ-c/v-deo.html. You leave us there in suspense. Plus then we have to pause your video, or close it, then go read the fsm, Haynes, or google the forums.

      @@valdezabel Sure and alot of our newer videos are better at stating that in the video or adding a note where possible.

    Imagine paying a shop for all this work. It would cost as much as the car is worth.

    Interesting options though "quadra-drive" is least desirable. '99-04 Grands were ahead of our time. My '01 bought used w/162,000 4.0 is my swiss army knife of JEEPS. I installed 2.5 " Freedom Off-road coils with 1/2 " leveling spacer up front, CORE 4×4 adjustable control arms all around w/ spacer block on the rear differential. I did the math especially lifting that changes front axle center. Adjustable trac bar is necessary. My WJ responds to 1/4 "steering" movement w/ negative 2 degrees caster. Sweet spot. Never needed alignment after 15,000 miles. Tires haven't worn @ all
    Cooper AT3.

    Yeah, my ‘99 is suffering from some of the issues you mentioned. I had a ground break in the middle of the Nevada desert that caused MAJOR issues and a 300 mile tow. Blown ECU, alternator, headlights, TCM, A/C fuse, fried battery,.. It’s been throwing codes everywhere since. I think I’m getting a handle on it. Now trying to pinpoint the leak burning off on the exhaust.

    Great video. Appreciate the details. Looking forward to watch the progress. I have a 2004 WJ as well. I’ve learned a lot from your videos or is replacing rear axles and replacing all brakes. I recently replaced the heater core that was a job. Somewhere in the process I mixed up which heater hose goes to which input of the heater core through the firewall. Can you comment on which heater hose goes where from the water pump? Next up is to replace the rear ball joints so will be interested to watch your work. Keep it up!

      Thanks a bunch! I'll try and get a closer look next time I'm out with the Jeep. So basically you need a few shots of the enginebay firewall to determine what is the output vs input on the heater core? I'll try and get some of that in the next day or two.

    Getting ready to replace the front wheel bearings and CV axles on my 2004 WJ. Will be replacing the ball joints and tie rods in the near future as well. I replaced the rear brake line last year. It bursted in the exact spot that you mentioned.

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage  Рік тому +2

      I'm kinda surprised no one has tried to get a recall on that brake line, I guess it's too late, but certainly seems that's the spot they go! Anyway, I just got done doing brakes on this one, and while at it I put a set of hubs on it. I do have an older video doing hubs and balljoints, but I'll be adding a newer video showing the hub replacement on this one.
      That said, it was odd - they popped right off. I feel like I got super lucky - usually they're a bit harder to get out of the knuckle.

      I had same issue. Rust hole in same place; pressed the brake and spewed brake fluid like a jet.

    Do you know on a 2004 WJ that you can turn the ignition key on and off (without starting) twice and then one more time leaving it on and it will give you any codes stored on the odometer. You can also hold down the trip odometer reset button and turn on the key and it will cycle all the instruments and dash lights.

    • @brynnond.6952
      @brynnond.6952 Рік тому

      Yeah you can do this on a lot of late 90’s up to 2010’s and then some if you cycle the key three times

    Great video. Looking forward to the progress on your new WJ. Question: at 20:04 you show a harmonic balancer on the transfer case rear output shaft / driveshaft... What's that about? My WJ doesnt have one of those (4.0 w/ nv242) and I can't find any info in the manual about it.

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage  Рік тому +1

      Great question on that - oddly enough it seems like there's a lot of contested data on these balancers across other Jeep models too. It seems they were added on TJ's at some point, with some claiming it was due to the manual transmission NV3550 having balance issues.
      Either way it appears they were added across some Jeep models as a mitigation to NVH complaints (noise/vibration/harshness).
      Oddly, I've worked mainly on 2004 WJ's, and I have an older video where I did driveshaft rebuilds, including my old White 4.7l Laredo, and another 2004 4.0l with the 242. ua-cam.com/video/9Uj-avxwgxw/v-deo.html&feature=shares
      Looking back at that video, both Jeeps have the harmonic balancer on the rear driveshaft - even the 4.0 with the 242.
      So my best guess is that Daimler-Chrylser (at the time) added them mid-run, but I don't see clear data as to when. Also, I have found that these Jeeps came with a mish-mash of driveshafts over the years, at least up front. So I wish I could decode it further but at least all of the 2004's I've worked on have had the harmonic balancer on the rear driveshaft, both with the 242 and the 247 cases.

    I love my WJ can I change 4.7 engine with a 3.1diesel engine

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage  Рік тому

      I'd hit up JeepForum and see if anyone has done this swap. I do know there were CRD diesel WJs in other markets, so parts for that style engine should be availalbe. But you'll want to do plenty of researh for sure.

    • @andrewgillougley8479
      @andrewgillougley8479 Рік тому

      The 2.7 diesel engine (made by merc) is the better choice if going diesel (more reliable and more kw/nm than the 3.1) we got em here in South Africa, the only diesel to get if you not staying petrol.
