Same here, same year and same price, 4.0 six and 141k. Checked it over quickly and jumped in it and drove from Prescott AZ to Apache Junction AZ at average speeds of 70 - 75 mph with no problems. Cruise and AC work great and no heating problems, but the front end feels a little loose and could use some work. Apparently the previous owner was big on "deferred maintenance". It does have an intermittent electrical problem with the windows, but I can deal with that and all other electrical work fine.
Looking forward to get into it and fixing all the little bugs and having some fun with it.

That select trac is inferior to Quadra drive as far as I'm concerned. I understand that it's also about preference.....to an extent. You'll get stuck first with select trac. I've got an 04 Overland and I can run with the best of them.

@@m.akbart3840 in theory possibly, the QD diffs fail often and are a known problem. Selec trac(specifically the 242 transfer cases) offer more control front to rear. I had an '02 WJ. Had the beefy 545RFE transmission, 4.7 Powertech and Quadratrac. For what I paid, it was a great Jeep. Very comfortable, pretty quiet, drove and handled better than any Jeep should, and got decent MPG (about 15.5 average) for having full time 4x4 with a V8. No complaints, really. If you're looking for something to utterly neglect, look elsewhere or pay up on AAA. If you actually plan on maintaining it and can swing a wrench, they're hard to beat.

Tommy, you didn't mention that the problem with the 4.7 is that they also have a lot of issues with ring lands shattering and valve seats falling out of the head. This also doesn't take into account that tensioners were changed in 01 to a more durable unit. AND PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AVOID THE 99-00 BECAUSE THEIR BRAKE CALIPERS WERE ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. The 99-00 and some 01's had a first generation caliper design that warped rotors regularly. It was actually part of a TSB for Jeep and Jeep redesigned the calipers in the late 01's to a more substantial quality one. Also, the 4.7 came in a HO version which was a night and day difference. Going from 235HP to 290HP changes the personality of the truck dramatically. I had an 01 with Quadradrive and the 4.7 and changed the cams and a tune and it woke it up just enough to be more enjoyable. Oh...and before I post. Also make sure to mention that the transmission is actually VERY sturdy, BUT they did go from it being just a 4 speed to a 5 speed in late 01 and if you have a 99-01 you can still take it to Jeep and have them reprogram the TCM to give it a 5th gear which can improve fuel economy quite a bit.

Watching this episode I'm struck by the extreme difference of living in the UK verses the US. You paid 2,500 dollars for a 2001 model Laredo with 225,000 miles. It has a big V8 with horrible millage figures.
Just over 2 years ago I bought a 2002 limited with a 135,000 miles on the clock in very clean condition for £1,200 pounds. I had to replace all the suspension control arms as the bushings were knackered & that cost me plus my efforts £300. Other than that it's been, knock on wood, flawless. It has a 5 cylinder 2.7 litre turbo diesel made by mercedes. Loads of power & torque & I get 24 mpg urban & 40+ motorway.
I grew up in Santa Fe NM so I sorta get the attraction to big V8's, but have been this side of the pond for the past 25 years. I miss the rocky mountains, but I'm sure that living over here in the UK is why I have ironically, the best SUV Jeep has ever made. The 2.7 litre straight 5 turbo diesel is brilliant & even sounds the part. I'm 59 & since I started driving legally at 17 I've owned near on 40 vehicles & this grand Cherokee is by far my favourite to date. Shame Jeep never sold this configuration in the US.

4:00 Clarification: That's a D44a, as in aluminum. It is NOT the same as a traditional D44. Center pumpkin is cast aluminum with steel shafts, and the ring gear is also slightly larger than a traditional cast iron D44. Locker options and limited slips are very limited for the D44a which is also something to take into conideration. Also the suspension uses a triangulated rear upper A-arm that mounts to 2 points on the body and bolts directly to the pumpkin housing. It uses a ball joint on top, and is very prone to failure leaving the rear end to wander around driving down the road.

The WJ's are the last "True" Grand Cherokees... the last ones to use the 4.0L I6 (yes, I know the Wrangler TJ was the VERY last Jeep to use that engine), the last ones to use 4-wheel Quadra Coil suspension, the last ones to offer fully-manual 4WD (Selec-Trac), and just the last "Classic" design of Grand Cherokee.

Jus got my second 2001 wj 190k miles. Minimal rust. Flawless interior. Had a few gremlins that made it so cheap but it came with a 2” budget lift and i tossed some wrangler oem wheels and 31 1/2” tires. Looks great and drives so well. $1500 and its driven an hour round trip every day. I love it. Reminds me of being a teenager with my very first vehicle. Another 2001 gc that made me fall in love with jeeps. Now i have a 99 cherokee rock crawler, 78 wagoneer cruiser and my 01 wj work beater.

I have a 2004 Laredo with 4.0 I bought as a back up vehicle. Currently has 150k on it. My daily driver is a 2002 isuzu trooper with the manual transmission. The isuzu in my opinion is a much higher quality vehicle and has definitely been more reliable. I've owned both vehicles for over 2 years, the jeep has far exceeded the isuzu in needed repairs. My trooper Currently has 268k miles on it it. Repairs on the trooper so far, a timing belt tensioner pulley. Repairs on the jeep, starter, battery, #3 fuel injector, fix broken, poorly designed wiring in the door to the cab. Just one guys experience. I'm sure I'll catch hell for this but, this is the way it's been so far.

But it’s starting to rust. It served its purpose well.

The first truck i financed was a 2006 dakota with the 4.7 it towed great, was a fantastic truck. I sold it as i was moving to a small apartment and my commuter was more important. Had over 100,000 miles when i sold it. Wanted another one of these a few years later. So i got an 07 dakota. The seat dropped in tge motor at 84,000 miles. So i got a an 05 dakota with the 4.7 to replace it. About a year later, at 89,000 miles it dropped the valve seat in the motor... switched to ford after that. A while later i wanted a winter 4x4 so i got an 04 grand cherokee with the 4.7. Which i had for 6 month and it also dropped a valve seat at 164,000 miles... ALL 3 TRUCKS DROPPED THE VALVE SEATS! the grand cherokee was perfectly maintained by the original dealership it was purchased from and traded in by the original owner. The 2 dakotas both were very well maintained both from the original owners... i understand that my situation is a great anomaly, but i can never buy a 4.7l as they are not meant for me xD

No big deal here in Arizona. Just recently the blend doors have become frozen in place. There's an easy fix for it that I'll get around to eventually. I take it out on back roads here in southern Arizona, mostly to get to hiking trailheads. Lots of Arizona pinstriping. This jeep has always gotten me out of places I find myself in. I have a 99’ 4.0 I6 WJ Laredo that I bought back in May of 2019 at the age of 17 as my first car for a whopping $2,900. I bought it with 107,000 miles on it, came with the leather interior and all the same interior specs that this one has. I live in Buffalo, NY where we’re known for our insane snow and winters, and it runs perfectly in all the snowy terrain. The Jeep came from Oklahoma (no winters with crazy snow and salt) and sat in a garage, untouched for 10 years prior as the previous owner had become to elderly to drive anymore. Absolutely no rust inside and out on my jeep. It came already fitted with laser fitted Husky floor mats and cargo mats so the carpeting is also spotless. No problems when I bought it besides the brakes, which was an easy fix. Since May of 2019, I’ve put just about 20,000 miles on it and she still runs like a charm. Got AT3 tires, installed a roof rack, installed front bull/safari bar, got a lightbar and a couple light pods. It’s great for trail riding, towing my pop up camper and snow, which I mentioned previously. I haven’t modified the suspension or put a lift on, but the stock model is just as capable of off-roading with 9+ inches of ground clearance AND skid plates. Couldn’t have asked for a better 1st car and can’t wait to continue driving it!

We put 50k miles on it over 5 years (bought it with 140k on the clock) and it seems like once we hit 190k on the odometer, it stared requiring repairs almost monthly. Watch out for failing fuel injectors, blend air door, regular wearable items like water pump, alternator and I highly recommend you get the crankshaft/camshaft position sensors changed (unless you know that the previous owner had done that). Also, gaskets will drip all around.

So far, I've put more into it than the car cost, but the Jeep is a project and hobby for me so the value/price is through the roof.

My Dad has a 04 Laredo V8 with Quadra-Trac II, bought in 2015 with 134k miles and paid $3700. The common issue with these WJs are the wiring that controls the windows and locks from the driver’s door, they tend to kink and/or break at or near the rubber boot running between the door and into the cabin. The drivers window work, but the rest of the windows, locks and even the tailgate lock won’t work. Other than the slight transmission leak that had developed recently, it’s now at 172k miles and has been a beast in the winter. But my Dad wants a truck again and and we’re gonna fix these issues before selling it in the next year.

I actually prefer the Laredo because of the unpainted bumpers. They don't look bad and if you ever need to replace one,you can just pop the damaged one off and pop the new one on. If you decide to take it off road you don't need to worry about scratching the paint on the bumper or the side trim. Mine is a 96 ZJ 5.2L. My fluid coupler went out recently,148K miles. I bought a 242 transfer case and converted it to part time 4WD.instead of AWD. I also have a 93 Explorer. It's a good little SUV but I like the Cherokee better. It's got way more power and gets roughly the same mpg.

I'm a big WJ fan, and have a very built '03 Overland. Which brings up a good point: how can you do a whole vid on WJs and not mention the Overland? You mentioned the Limited as the top trim multiple times, and while that was true for your '01, it wasn't true for all WJs. The Overland was the top trim from '02-04 and included the HO version of the 4.7 (265/330 HP/TQ vs. 235/295 HP/TQ for the non-HO) and basically every other feature and upgrade available on a WJ. Otherwise, a pretty good review, and generally accurate.

Had 2000 V8 Grand Cherokee Ltd with Quadradrive. I am no off roader but it was great in snow. Great size, decent ride and mostly dependable. One oddity. After about 5 years, the radiator sprung a leak. The leak was about 3/4 of the way up and on the left side as you face the Jeep. Never had any car other than that that ever that had a radiator leak. 11 months later, the replacement radiator, which was a new OEM installed by the dealer, sprung a leak in almost the same place. 11 months was key as the replacement had a one year warranty. At least that one was free. While I never sat there, my daughter told me the back seats were too upright and thus not very comfortable on long trips.

I bought a beautiful and pristine 2000 Laredo 4x4 with the venerable straight 6 4.0 ... and the engine blew within 3 hours! I replaced the engine with a rebuilt used engine, and then I had a transmission pan seal blow, and all the 02 sensors needed replacement. Then I had to replace the shocks, and fix the horn, now the windows are sticking and the door locks don't work. Nevertheless, I LOVE THIS CAR. Why? You can get parts anywhere, at any time, and they are cheap. Many of the repairs are DIY, just watch the You Tube videos. But best of all it can literally go anywhere. The interior is the nicest of any car I have ever owned, still pristine, it's comfortable, the stereo is still amazing, and it is such a smooth ride for a 4x4 truck. It will also tow my trailer, and it can make it up the steepest hills. Loads of storage space. The fuel economy has been surprising since the engine rebuild, and I am getting around 23 mpg on highway. Snap them up now while they are still cheap -- this is a future classic and the impeccable ones are going for up to $12,000 now on the West Coast.

I bought an '02 4L WJ with ~155K on the clock for $2500, for a knock around vehicle, and I love it. Pretty much everything works on it, very little frame rust, no surface rust, I replaced the headlight assemblies and it looks mint. I replaced all the calipers and rotors, fixed a sway bar link, still need to replace rear control arms, but it feels solid going down the road. The old straight six has a ton of torque that can still put you back in your seat, and that engine couldn't be smoother. I know the tranny is going to be it's demise, it can slip in first if I really get on it, but if I coax it gently off the line, it shifts fine. It's not an everyday driver, so if I treat it well, I think I'll get 2 or 3 years to enjoy my time with it, not bad for the price.

I loved my WJ. It had 123k on it when I got it, but it wasn’t very well maintained. It was a 2002 Limited RWD with the 4.7. Every coolant component needed replaced. Cylinder heads. Valve covers. AC compressor. The heater core was the worse. HOWEVER, most of those issues would have been avoidable had the original owner changed the coolant when they were supposed to. The EVIC console was cheap to replace. The A/C compressor was rather expected due to the miles and 110 degree heat it was ran hard in. I traded it in when it developed the death wobble that replacing the track bar failed to fix. Traded it in for a 2011 Grand Cherokee Limited with 65k that was dealership maintained. One owner. No wrecks. Garage kept. Flawless shape inside and out. Mechanically as well. Now it has 111,000 miles on it, and I’ve had no issues with it. Through my experience, I learned that MAINTENANCE IS KEY with Jeeps, as with most things. I’ve kept up with fluid changes (coolant, transmission, axle, brake fluid, etc), oil changes, tire rotations, spark plugs, brake pads, etc. I haven’t missed a single service interval, and I tend to do fluid changes ahead of time. Every 30k miles I do all of them. That is the biggest thing in my experience. Fresh fluids.

Nice video. Got myself a 2003 4.7.h.o. For 600. Fixed it up and it has been doing great. The only thing left to do is the blend doors. But overall very impressed with the quadradrive in sand and mud. The cars are good. But need attention to fluids and oil changes. The lifters get clogged and don't work as they shoul, causing all kinds of problems. Plenty of info on how to get everything fixed. The only other thing i would avoid is rust. Both motors are great. But v8 in my opinion is better overall . the h.o version is the cherry on top , hard to find but worth the wait.

A well cared for Durango is similarly inexpensive and can be pretty decent as well

I've had both. Drive both 50 yards and it's incredibly apparent that the WJ is orders of magnitude more capable off road. The Durango has better on road manners. The Jeep feels far more upscale inside too.

These also came with a 2.7 Ltr 5 cylinder straight dohc (engine made by Mercedes). Extremely reliable and the most reliable of any engine option for this car. It is a little lower on power at 163bhp but it’s basically the same as you can still tow the earth if you want to.

Just now had to replace my OG Transmission on my 1995 ZJ at 256k miles. Still rocking a non rebuilt 318. At this point its the only thing I haven't touched yet.

My parents had 2 of those jeeps with the 4.7 which was a nightmare engine failure twice.
And my uncle had the I6 4.0 that outlasted our 2 jeeps with that horrible 4.7

A 99 4.0 with the Selec-Trac got me through college and in some bad winters. Also owned a 2002 4.7, 2000 4.7, 2004 4.7HO. All great, biggest advise is look for one with no rust, operable 4WD and well-working HVAC controls and you'll knock out the most expensive repairs. I'd love to find one like you have...if you ever sell... ;)

We have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 4.7L, roughly 140,000 miles; still going strong.

I owned an 03 WJ Overland with the 4.7 HO that I bought with 147k for $500. Came with tons of fluid leaks and a blown head gasket. I ran it for a year and a half and I beat the absolute piss out of it. You cannot and will not get a vehicle with this level of comfort and reliability for so cheap.

The Limited has automatic climate controls, which are bad. The blend door gets jammed, requiring you to either cut your dash or remove it to replace the door.
The 242 is the NP242 Selec-Trac transfer case.
The rear diff in the V8 is the Dana 44a, with an aluminum center section and it requires its own special parts.

Just rebuilt engine and trans in my '99. 4.0-42re-selc trac. Been daily driving it for 18 years. Hoping for at least another 5. It's great off-road and perfect size for road trips or city driving. I highly recommend. I figure in 2023 they're probably selling for lunch money prices.
