Are you wondering why your period is delayed or have you missed a period since taking the emergency contraceptive (birth control) pill?
How does the pill affect the Timing | Duration or Flow (Heavy or Light) of the next period?
Many ladies do not understand the plan b effects on their period and why they can have a negative pregnancy test while their periods are delayed, or late.
In this video, I will explain the changes that can happen to your menstrual cycle after plan b, escapelle, postinor, levonelle, postinor2, Ella (Ella one), and other types of the morning after pill that contain levonorgestrel or ulipristal acetate.
You will also learn the mode of action of the birth control pill and understand why you can have a negative pregnancy test, with 2 months missed period, or if period 2 weeks late.

Delay in your period doesn’t mean the pill didn’t work.
Period delay is a normal outcome of the emergency pill for *some* women - even 7 days or a little more.

Just to encourage someone out there, I saw my period on 24th-27th Dec and had unprotected sex on the 28th dec! Even though I was sure he did withdrawal method but don’t want to take chances, I took contraceptives within 48hrs difference!!
My menstrual cycle is 28days which my next period is supposed to come on the 20th of Jan. I was panicking and was so scared did series of home pregnancy test and it came out all negative. I was 11days late. But it later came on the last day of the month on the 31st Jan -4th Feb. sometimes anxiety and hormonal imbalance delays period.
Okay just to help other people out-
It was probably my fertile window but I don't keep track of my period so I'm not sure. I took the unwanted 72 pill within 24 hours on 13th June. I didn't have any side effects until about a week later (20th June) I had some bleeding. It wasn't exactly spotting but it wasn't a normal period either. I was worried that it could be implantation bleeding but I read that implantation bleeding is usually lighter and not as common as people would think. I guess it was withdrawal bleeding from the pill. It lasted for about 4 days. My period was supposed to start on 28th June but it didn't come. In fact, I completely missed it. I took 3 tests. One on the fourth day of missing period and one a week after missing it. And another one a few days after that. All negative. I didn't have my period the whole month and I was worried sick. But today, on 28th July, I got my period. So basically I missed my period for a whole month and got it right on time the next month. Hope this helps

Yes, it certainly can affect periods in the months after taking the pill - this happens to different degrees in women, and we don't know why some women seem to continue the regular cycle after a plan b, while others don't.

Hi, sure there is the chance the pill can work if taken the day before ovulation. Its effectiveness is not 100%, so please still do a test 2-3 weeks after sex.

My Last period is Sept. 15-21, it’s my first time taking BCPills and started it September 26. After taking the BCpills for 7days I had unprotected sex Day8 October 3 and he pulls out. I have been 3 days late on my period but I did take an Ella contraceptive and a plan b twice in one month before my next cycle which was supposed to be March 19th. I took a pregnancy test yesterday and it was negative but this is the first time I have ever had taken two contraceptives in one month. If it helps my cycle is 27 days and lasts 4 days.

Yes it’s possible.
Don’t assume that because you haven’t seen the period, your ovaries are not working to release an egg.
Use extra protection like a condom or emergency pill if you need to.

App says my ovulation was on 17th. Had unprotected sex on 24th but CD burst and as soon as I stood up some sperms fell out. Took first pill on 25th at 10am. Had unprotected sex on 25th at 5 and took 2nd pill of p2 at 10pm. Was sacred so took 2 more pills next day 12hrs apart.felt light headaches and light nausea next day. Hi Brian, as long as she did not vomit within 2-3 hours of taking the pill it's been absorbed. The tummy ache may be a the pill side effect and should only be mild and short-lived.

If you had sex 4/5 days ago, it’s too early for a pregnancy test.
These symptoms could be a side effect of the pill - but if the pain is severe and getting worse please go to the hospital.
If they are quite mild, they are likely from the pill but you should watch for your actual period around the usual time.
If that period is late by more than 7 days, then do a pregnancy test.

Ok, a repeat test at 3 weeks should confirm - or you can get a blood pregnancy test which is more accurate.

@@JennellBarrett Hi, when you take it before ovulation, the pill will delay ovulation for about 5 days. Then you will ovulate - it doesn't prevent it. But there are some times of your cycle when you have already ovulated - such as just after your period. So your cycle is likely resuming and you will ovulate - but we can't predict when it may happen.
How far
I took Aftera, the CVS version of Plan B, within about 4 or 5 hours after a condom filled with semen got stuck deep inside. My partner pulled it out within minutes. But I'm worried because I have an irregular cycle and not sure if I was ovulating. Took the pill about 4 nights ago still no side-effects yet. My period, if basing it on last month, could still be over a week away. I'm scared.
Unless you use regular protection or choose the copper coil for an emergency, you will always have this concern. There's no way to know till you do the pregnancy test in a couple of weeks.
Hey, Can switching from one brand of EC to another new brand in the same month cause a missed period?
So my girlfriend had been taking Plan B but then switched to Julie EC then she was bleeding a week after taking the Julie EC like every other time with Plan B, but her period hasn’t come for 13 days when expected day. I am just curious if it could be the effect of switching one brand to another.
Hi, it's likely the period delays (changes) are down to using the EC too frequently - they are only meant for occasional use.

Hi, if these cramps are severe, please get them checked over by a Dr. Many problems including pill side effect, urine infection, sexual infection and others may be responsible and an assessment is needed to clarify.

Soo I bleed after taking plan B on the day that was supposed to be my ovulation day (4 days after talking the pill). And it's one month and two weeks now yet no more periods.
I've used the pregnancy strip nothing, I went for an ultrasound still nothing. I'm worried but I think I should give it 1 to 2 weeks then go for blood pregnancy test.

Hi, plan b can delay your period.
But theres no way we can tell if its worked till some days after.
Usually a pregnancy test 2/3 weeks after you had unprotected sex, will have the answer.
Its reasonable to wait a few weeks (if you dont have symptoms), before speaking to your Dr if the periods are still absent.
Please try not to worry, meanwhile.

Took microgynon 2 pills then continued 1 tab for 4 days , note ovulation took place previous day my app shows it was supposed to be in next 2 days, so had unprotected sex the day after ovulation about 24 to 36 hours later, then took microgynon 12 hour of unprotected sex. on day 9 started having epigastric pain, metalic taste, saliva, rash can I be pregnant

The effect of the pill on your periods can depend on which half of your cycle you took it, how many times you used the EC pill in the last cycle, and whether you are using any other hormone like regular contraception and so on. Did you experience any bleeding after taking the pill in December?
To be quite certain, you can ask your doctor for a blood pregnancy test (especially if you have pregnancy symptoms like breast tenderness or nausea).
If that is negative, and the period hasn't arrived by the end of January, you should have a chat with your doctor to address any other causes.

I took plan b 2 days after my period and had bleeding after a week which lasted two days last time i had intercourse was on 24 of oct and now I am 12 days late should I be worried
( also the condom came off that’s why I took the pill not because semen got in me )

Anish, the pill is effective taken after sex and before ovulation. There is no sign to confirm pregnancy after taking the pill except by doing a pregnancy test by 2-3 weeks after sex to see if she is pregnant or not.

I took my pill maybe 8 hours after sex. The next pill should be taken 12 hours after the first. But I missed it and took the second pill 13 hours after the 1st one instead. Will it still work?
It's still within a good chance to work. We recommend you do a pregnancy test if your next period is delayed more than 7 days.

i took the pill on the first day of my period on the 24th of november and usually my cycle occurs monthly but it’s now the 9th of jan and i took two pregnancy tests last week which both came back negative but still no period
Hi, it could be an effect of the pill. Usually, the period should appear in the next cycle if not before.
If your tests are negative, you have no other symptoms and do not take any additional hormones, wait till the second month to see if the period returns.
If still absent, check in with your Dr to look for other possible causes.

Without knowing at which point in your cycle you had the pill, it’s difficult to say.
A delayed period could also be an effect of the pill.
But yes, I’d usually suggest you repeat the test after 7 days or get a blood pregnancy test.

By 20 days on a late period, a pregnancy test would indicate if you are or not.
That, pregnancy symptoms as well.
You can repeat the test after 1 week if its negative.
And if it is, yes multiple plan B in one cycle can do this.

Yes it's possible. It's good practice to check by doing a test 3 weeks after sex.

It’s likely you are not pregnant, but you should do a pregnancy test after 3 weeks.

Some ladies experience cramps after taking the emergency pill. You can do a pregnancy test once its 2-3 weeks after sex to check. If the pain gets severe or you feel more ill, visit a clinic / ED asap.

Plan b can delay periods sometimes. You can be patient, and usually, the cycle will return to normal unless there's another cause of delayed periods, in which case you should see your doctor.
