It’s many weeks after you took the emergency contraceptive pill (emergency pill, levonorgestrel, morning after pill, plan B, Postinor, Levonelle, Ulipristal), but your missed period has yet to arrive.
Worried about pregnancy you have done several pregnancy tests - all negative.
And you are full of questions:
- how late can a period be

Any woman taking the morning after pill/ birth control pills should also be familiar with
possible emergency contraceptive pill side effects.
Emergency contraceptive pills contain Progesterone agents which can lead to delayed period as one of the morning after pill side effects.
Having a missed period can make you worry you are pregnant after taking plan b, but if you understand how to use emergency contraceptives and that it can delay your period for a while, this may allay your anxiety.
However, you should watch for signs of pregnancy and seek medical help if you develop problems like missed period on birth control but have cramps, or any unexpected symptoms.

Hi Dr! I have a question. So my period shouldve shown up a week ago but it didnt. So I took a pregnancy test 2 weeks after intercourse and it came out negative. However, I forgot that I shouldnt drink liquids but I did drink a little water before testing. I tested around evening time. But could the pregnancy test still be accurate despite diluted urine since I've waited a good amount of time to test?
Hi Tate 👋🏽, the urine tests are pretty sensitive and should still pick up enough hormone to show if positive or not.
The best would be to repeat the test to remove any doubts.

So my Gf used yuzpe/nordette method tomorrow morning after having unprotected sex using pull-out method. her ovulation day was tomorrow after taking the pills. Is it normal that she was dry on her ovulation day? is it because of the pill and will she have her period?

I had an intercourse on the second day of my period. (December 1)Since emergency pills are not available i took several doses of birth control pills at once with 12hour interval. The birthcontrol had levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol in it.
I took the first set of pills within 24hours.
I calculated the doses i took and i had about 1.5mg of levonogestrel.
On december 3 my period stopped. But it came back on december 8 until december 12.
On my app tracker, it says my ovulation should be in december 10th. And my fertile window should start on december 5th. But i took the pill on december 2. (But still in 24hours after intercourse)
My cycle is usually around 24-26 days.
It is also my first time ever on pills
Do you think i conceived? Do you think my period will come early or later than usual? Should i be worried?

If emergency pill is taken mulitple times in one cycle, like 4 or 5 times, once during period, then early cycle maybe day7, and mid cycle, how long will ovulation be delayed for? Pills would have been taken either immediately after intercourse or 1hr-2hrs or so....

As long as ovulation hasn't already started at the time you have the pill, it's potentially able to delay ovulation each time.
hello doctor, i took ec like in Oct 18 and after that i get my period a week earlier, which is i gotten 2 periods in a month. Now i get very nervous waiting for my second period, it was 7 days late and i tested pregnancy test all of them said negative. Wow so much info I'm so excited to have found your channel! My partner and I used plan b in the middle of her period (day 8-10ish). Her calculator says her peak ovulation day was ~6 days later. Then she said she got her period 4 days later (2 days before peak ovulation). Does her cycle now start over (as in ovulation will no longer take place this cycle)? Or did it push back ovulation 5ish days (enough time for the hormones to leave the body and resume the original cycle?

Question doctor, i took a plan b on dec 16 and i started bleeding about a week later ( dec 23 ) and its now jan 14 and i have not gotten my period but my pregnancy test are coming out negative. Is there a chance i can be pregnant?
Hi Alondra, if you took the pill before ovulation then it has the best chance to work.
Without knowing when you had your last period or ovulation, I can’t tell.
However it’s possible the bleeding you had initially is the pill effect - but the pill can also bring your period forward; which may be why you’ve not yet bled again.
Keep calm, repeat your test in another week, see your doctor if the period is still delayed and you think you have pregnancy symptoms.

my experience so far that’s confusing.. i’m about two weeks late for my period. i took a Plan B the day after my last period on a saturday on my placebo week on birth control. resumed my pill on sunday. i was supposed to get my period during my “period week” and i never got it. after my period i got off birth control which my doctor and i both agreed on and i still haven’t had a period. i had cramps and spotting for two days and don’t know if that was my period or not

First I agree with you - pill effects can be very confusing!!
It’s likely your period delay is a combination of taking that emergency pill - and- discontinuing your regular birth control.
Ordinarily after you stop regular birth control, it takes some time for your own natural hormones to start affecting ur womb/ovaries again.
Remember they’ve been ‘asleep’ while you were on regular birth control.
Now the regular pills are gone, your hormones will gradually start their effects and your periods should resume - this can be after a couple of weeks or more.
In this case, as you also took the emergency pill, this can also add an effect like delaying the periods a little.
The light spotting can also be an effect of the emergency pill
Don’t worry - these are all temporary effects and your period should get back in rhythm - unless you take any more pills.
* a pregnancy test is always advised after a delay of more than 7 days to seeing your period when you’ve taken the emergency pill.

Good evening ma, please I want to know why I'm having abdomen pain like I want to see my period after taking positnor 2.2 park in two weeks,
I had unprotected the last day of my period (minor spotting ) and used a plan B. 5 days later I was spotting brownish blood, very lite for 5 days, which I assumed was a side effect. I was due for my next cycle 21 days later and my cycles are very regular. I am now 9 days late for my regular cycle date and haven't had my version of a regular cycle in over 30 days. So I'm confused and I went to the doctors they checked my ovaries and insides and said everything was fine and no pregnancy.
Hi @EmilyYoda this does sound like a pill effect if the PT is negative and no symptoms/signs of pregnancy.
It can be so frustrating, I know.
But we cant tell how long the period may be delayed for, so please keep an eye on the cycle, see your Dr if any new symptoms develop. Your cycle should return before too long.

I had the same bleeding 5 days after taking the plan b. I waited until I was late for my period and have now taken 15 at home pregancy tests. All negative was that light brown bleeding maybe a period?
I had your period on December 3rd and it lasted until December 7th. Then, i had another period on December 30th, which lasted until January 9th. It's now February, and i haven't gotten my period yet. You can imagine how frustrating that can be 😢I took a pregnancy test and it came back negative.

Hi, its good to take it as soon as possible, so earlier is better.
It can delay your period for some time - a pregnancy test done 2-3 weeks after sex should guide you. Period delay can sometimes vary from 1 week or more past the due date.

Hello doc, i took the plan b pill 4 weeks ago on the 28th of September. I spotted the week after for 5 days and now its the 25th of october but my period is still not here. Been testing and all i get are negatives but i started feeling twinges in my right lower pelvic area last night along with dizzyness, fatigue and nausea. So i tested and still negative. Could this be my period coming, the pill or ovulation? My period is supposed to be here by the end of this month but these symptoms are beginning to worry me despite the negative results
Hi, there's really no way to tell whats happening without tests especially since you've been feeling unwell with nausea/dizziness etc.
Please see your Dr to arrange further tests to clarify.

Hi,I got my period on 23 November(on time). I had sex on 12 Dec (20 day of cycle) and I took the plan B pill within 24hrs. After that I got my period on the usual time on 23 December( on time) for 5 days.

Hi, if your pregnancy test is negative, it could be an effect of the pill. So I suggest, doing the test in the first instance if you've not yet done so.

Took plan b on the 13th of this month (less than 24h after sex), the first day of my fertile window according to an app. Had some light bleeding,same color as a period,2 days before my period was supposed to start. My menstrual cycle is 30 days. I had a menstrual period 5 January, I had sex on 13 January and then I mistakenly counted my dangerous days, 14 January I swallowed emergingor pills so I will be able to get my days back on 4th February but so far it is 8th February and I have not menstruated and I do not see any symptoms. Hi AMA thanks for your question.
I don't know when last you saw your period so I can't give more specific information about why the period may be late, but one of the effects of the regular, combined pill is to make the periods lighter and more regular in most women.
If you have only been taking it for a few months, it could be that your body is still getting used to the hormones and usually after 3 months your menstrual pattern becomes regular.
*If you have missed the pill in the last few weeks please do a pregnancy test.*
In respect if cervical cancer, here are the facts:
1. The combined pill (example Levofem) does not *cause* cervical cancer
2. However, there is a small risk of getting cervical cancer if a woman uses the combined pill regularly for *more than 5 years*
3. That risk stops or disappears when the woman stops taking the pill. So that by 10 years after a lady has stopped the pill, she is at the same risk of getting cervical cancer as a woman who never used the pill.
I hope this helps but please recall that other factors are strongly linked to having cervical cancer like HPV infection, having many sexual partners, smoking and others - read my post here for more around this - askawayhealth.org/cervical-cancer-awareness-what-you-should-know/.
If you can, make sure you attend your smear tests regularly to monitor your health and reduce any risk of cervical cancer.

Hi, and thank you.
It's not unusual to have some slight bleeding after taking the emergency pill. But it's important that if the period is delayed, do a pregnancy test. The earlier bleeding may suggest something other than the pill side effect like implantation bleeding.

Hi the pill could make the next couple of cycles a lady has after taking them irregular.
Of course there are other reasons a period pattern may change - this depends on their medical background.
She can keep an eye on her pattern and contact her doctor if she has other symptoms.

Hello there doctor. I had unprotected sex not too long Ago and I took a plan b a week before my period is suppose to start and I was wondering if the pill can still be effective. Your period May be late because of the pill you took.
If you haven’t missed a period or had sex before the 8th, try not to panic.
We can’t say when the period is going to arrive but you can do a pregnancy test by 2-3 weeks time to check if your period still hasn’t shown up.

Hi Marilyn, as explained in the video, the pill can delay your period, make it come early or have no effect on the period.
You can repeat the test after a week, or contact your doctor if you develop any sign of illness.

I’m so scared because I took Ella Feb 5th and I haven’t gotten my period for 2 months… I took 2 pregnancy tests one on March 3rd and the other on March 10th 1 week apart from each other and they came back negative. Is there a possibility that I might have gotten a false negative?. Was sexually active on Feb 5th (when I took Ella), 16&17th.

I took plan b like 3 days after my period bled again after 5 days it was plan b bleeding then just now got my period from that initial first period. 21 days late. Take pregnancy tests 3 weeks after you took plan b. If it comes out negative wait one more week take another one. If that comes negative you’re good. It’s just a waiting game. Hy i took the pill last week and it's 😢 now the seventh day still no period 🤦
Hi can you please help me. On the 25 Feb it was day 1 of my cycle. Then had unprotected sex on day5 and took a morning after pill. I did not have any side effects immediately after taking the pill. After taking the pill i had unprotected sex again for 3 days and did not take any morning after pill. But in between the month maybe after 8 days taking the pill i experienced cramping and light bleeding but only lasted 5/6 hours. Then took the pregnancy test ,results were negative. As time goes , one day after eating dinner maybe 1 hour later i was vomiting and it only happened that day. I took a pregnancy test again but still came negative. Currently i have foods that smell bad for me and what i noticed i don't like viniger but lately i find it tastey n enjoy it. I am 7 days late and currently it 41 days after my last period. I am worried if i am pregnant or not after getting those negative results. What is confusing is that i took morning after pills last year but did not get sick n periods were only 5 days late. Im wondering what is happening this time.

Hi, I took three plan b pills in one month. My period comes late in the month and that month it didn’t come I’m assuming it’s because of those pills. So my period didn’t come last month and all the pregnancy tests say negative. I have no symptoms I’m just praying my cycle goes back to normal this month.

So I took an emergency contraceptive after my period was finished and then my period came and ended however I took another one exactly 1 week after that and then my period didn't come until 19days after it was due. I took a test and it came back negative. It's now 3 months after and my period is on track but I am having cramps and my belly is all of a sudden bloated. Is it possible that I am pregnant?
Hi Kay, if you've not had any sex in the 3 months since the last test, and you are having regular menstrual bleeds, it seems pregnancy is unlikely but you can request a blood pregnancy test to be sure. Best Wishes.

The bleeding you saw last month may have been a period - but it could also have been a side effect of the pill.
Depending on when you took the pill (early or late in your cycle, the period can be delayed as a normal effect of the pill).
The advice is to do a pregnancy test if the period is late by 7 days; so please don't assume until then that this is a pill side effect only.

I have a question and your video explains a lot 😌but just to ease my mind last month in May I had a accidental moment with my boyfriend and I took a plan B the same day and as quick as possible and my period came on early than it normally do and it was still the 7 day time frame of how my period normally last but now it’s a new month June and it’s almost over with I still haven’t seen my period I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative and I haven’t had no weird feeling besides my typical feeling like my period should be on. I don't know where in your cycle you met with your bf, but given that you used the pill ASAP, it's likely worked - the delay is possibly one of the pill effects.

Hi Vikkie, the studies we have tell us taking more than 1 emergency pill per cycle can make periods irregular.
This could mean delays of a few or several days; or unscheduled bleeding and the length/ duration can be different for each woman.

My gf took the plan B and then got her period on time which was a few days later. However she hasn't gotten her period since and is now a week or so late. Is this normal considering she already got her period the first time around after taking the plan B. Hope to hear from you

After taking the pill, a few things can happen - a woman may have her usual periods a little earlier than scheduled.
But it may also come later than scheduled - mostly about 7 days or so. In some women, the period is right on schedule.
However, there is also ANOTHER effect - a little bleeding due to the hormone in the pill and not related to the periods.
We don't yet know which effect happens with which women - it can vary - also depends on which time in her cycle she took the pill.
If her expected period is late, she should do a pregnancy test. If that is negative, she needs to wait another week and repeat it.
She may not be pregnant, and the period is only delayed because of the effect of the pill.

Before i had sex i just came off of my period and then had sex I took a plan b on the 20 of nov and the next week i had saw blood for 6 days with clotting and cramping. After i took the vaccine on the 3rd of dec and my period didn't come and i took the second shot also on 30 of dec and its now January haven't had any sexual intercourse since then and i took multiple test they all came out negative and still no sign of my period also i will get get cramp in my breast but nothing else. I saw blood two times for the month. Wondering if its was my period also.

It’s possibly the bleeding you had soon after taking the pill was a side effect - usually that’s light spotting but can sometimes be a little heavy.
I would have expected you to have a period in December but perhaps since you already had two separate bleeds in November (the second was heavy); that may be why you had none in December.
We are still looking at the effects of Covid 19 / Covid vaccines on women’s menstrual cycle.
Since your pregnancy tests are negative, please give it another 2-3 weeks to see if your period arrives and if not, have a chat with your doctor to look into things further.

Taking the pill more often in one month can affect the cycle, there's no withdrawal pill.
If your tests are negative, a balanced diet, good sleep, moderate exercise, avoiding stress it should return soon.
