@@dissonanceparadiddle Basically the opacity of your brush needs to be tied to the pressure you apply with the pen. By default the pressure changes the size of your brush, not the opacity. So you have to make a brush that removes the size scaling when you press harder, and instead applies more opacity. And instead you control the size with bracket keys on a keyboard. Or hotkeys on your drawing tablet. Opacity just means you can paint with "transparency" more or less. And the amount is based on how much pressure, or how little, you put on the pen. When you paint over a section you already painted, it stacks. The amount you apply over it depends on the pressure you press with. Or, the amount of times you draw over it. Almost like sculpting shapes into existance, you get the sense of building up material on itself to create things. And depth, by using opacity, controls allows you to create a scene very quickly with life like shapes and distance to every object you create. Even while not having any texture or color applied yet. Although it's very easy to do that as you go.
@@HalkerVeil oh got it. I assumed that's how it worked by default since I bought it today and I'm used to painter/clip studio but I'll have to make sure to change that thank you.
You just opened my eyes to new ideas D:!!! I was struggling trying to do this for years and just couldn't find a way to replicate that on ArtRage so smoothly
Thanks for the video! Are you still using ArtRage? If so, do you have other videos showing how to properly use the software? I got an XP Pen for christmas and installed ArtRage but am not confident in how to use it. I don't quite understand the layering, and even ruined art that I started in ArtRage because I'm not transitioning through the layers correctly.
@@Doodlemachine Oh thank goodness, I was going to say the same thing. Excellent tutorial just very annoying music. I like just hearing the expert's voice. Music does nothing but detract. Love the concept of redrawing children's art. I'm sure they get excited to know their work has inspired you!
I tried the tree different methods and find the "Lock Transparency" to be most effective. Do the tree different methods differ in terms of "jagged" edges (anti-aliasing)?
I've never tried opencanvas to be honest, but ArtRage is in my all time top 3 pieces of software. Opencanvans looks great, but ArtRage is a bit of a different style of program - Artrage's main function is to mimic real paint (with real 3d effect brush strokes and paint that mixes realistically), while OpenCanvas looks like a more standard drawing/painting program.
Love your work tryin to morivate my daughter to animate like you... I tried to lock the layer but it doesnt seem to be an option.? Do i have to upgrade the version? I bought a pentablet and artrage lite came in it
That's great! I've never used ArtRage lite, but I just took a look and yeah it does look like the layer transparency lock isn't available in that version. Artrage has another way to do transparency lock called "Stencils", does the lite version have access to that? If not, you might be out of luck and will have to upgrade to the full version, although there are many other free drawing programs out there - let me know if you need any suggestions. Good luck! And thank you!
Great tecnique, I used to do it with my art but it looks ugly and is for one important reason.... this tecnique works great WITH YOUR ART STYLE... this don't go well with hiper reallistic or caricatures, etc... anyway, great tecnique and great video
Yup for sure. That's why I stressed that it'll be different for everyone. Although I think I'd still use this method a lot even if I worked more realistically. That might make a good video actually...
There are lots of things hidden away in the layer menu on ArtRage. I love the clean UI (for a desktop app) but some things I often use a lot are not easily accessible as a tablet user. The best UI on a - non-apple - drawing app is probably Sketchbook on Android - the app ****s on the windows version all round.
Thanks for your video! At 5:29 using an ArtRage stencil you can ensure your paint doesn't go outside the stencil edge by making a selection of the bounds of the stencil as shown by Someonesane's video. Here's a clip ua-cam.com/users/clipUgzrkp9gVn69nwqfPzx4AaABCQ. Stay inspired!
Ah bummer! The PC version of ArtRage isn't very expensive, of all the programs I use it's the one that I have no problem telling people is worth the price.
@@Doodlemachine ... Oh, well thanks, let me see if I can take that money from the trees... Oh! I can't! :'D I already knew that, but I'm a student with no money to spend besides my food, my Internet and school, so thanks for the advice (╥﹏╥)
Seriously? The "most important technique" for digital art? Talk about a click-bait joke of a title! A technique is a way of doing something that takes time and effort to learn, and at least some level of skill to utilise. This is none of the above. It's just a shortcut that can save time, one that can't even be carried over into traditional art. This is a "function" of most digital art software, not a "technique". It's not even an "important" function either, in my view. Being confident with your brush strokes and putting them where you want them is a massive part of being a good (or even decent) artist, digital or otherwise. If someone is relying on tools like this to "stay within the lines" then they are learning absolutely nothing. Newbies will never improve by doing things this way, and veterans will see their ability atrophy. This is a function for kids, doodlers and the lazy, nothing more.
I agree Lower the music please

Alpha Lock is one of the many layer features I love. And free selection is very useful in constraining brush strokes.
Most important technique I found was using opacity on my wacom pressure instead of the default brush size.
Lets you paint depth instantly.
Of course, that's a big one!
I'm not sure what you mean but it sounds interesting

The red stencil is based on real life stencils that were typically made in red clear plastic.
instaBlaster.
Yes, it was called Amberlith
This is so simple yet opens up a world of possibilities!!! Thank you so much!!
That's the idea! Glad you found it helpful :D
using a Multiply layer as a way to colour over pencil drawings. was mind blowing when i first started
My one technique is definitely not rushing and painstaikenly taking my time to do crucial steps one at a time.

Here from Reddit! I Love the technique you share! Keep posting!
Thank you! Will do!
This is a lot of value packed in one video! New sub!
Thanks for saying so! Welcome!
Yes~~!! Thank you!
Oh! Excellent illustration on your website, I must say! Yer doin' it all!! Great stuff, thank you!
Pretty great technique, makes me want to get back into digital art
You should!
thats why you dont suggest people to thumbs down! haha 15 thumbs down people are too honest. thanks for the viddeo like it
Ha. Yeah I guess that's true. If I only gave them the option of thumbing it up there would be no thumbs down I guess 😛.

If only there were some way to turn off the distracting music!
Sorry about that. I've stopped using music so loud in the background since this video.

GET RID OF THE ANOYING BACKGROUND MUSIC EVERYONE!

Yes you can! You need to use the "protect alpha" option in your layers palette. Good luck!

Yeah I didn't really nail the proper balance for the background music on this one. :/
