- GEAR DOES NOT MATTER. No telephoto lens? No full frame sensor? No problem! I take you behind the scenes on a Fuji X100V portrait shoot and show you all my tricks. Learn how to pose couples that are NOT models and get candid/natural-looking portraits with MINIMAL gear.
Are you a Fujifilm wondering if your gear is good enough for portraits? Are you looking to shoot portraiture with your Fujifilm X100V? You CAN shoot amazing portraits with minimal gear, crop sensors, and limited lens selection.
As proof, I use an X100V as my sole camera, and take you behind the scenes of a full portrait shoot. I show you how I pose couples for natural looking portraits, and point out specific things you can fix to drastically improve your look, lighting, and composition - no gear upgrades necessary!

👍🙌 I’m with you!
yes please! :)
🙋♂️
Please drop the video for your fav poses. Can't wait
This is an amazing deconstruction of a shoot. So helpful and insightful! Once the groom started to relax, you could see the smile change up in his eyes. Your unconventional framing in several of the initial shots you shared was equally impressive and artistic. I loved this all around.
Thanks so much for your comment. It takes a lot of effort to make these, but love that it helps you guys out!
+1 !! 👍🏼on this comment!
I really enjoy how you improve your photos step by step, this makes me less nervous when taking a “bad” photo, coz it’s just a necessary process!!!!
Yup definitely
Excellent selection of photographs
2:15 thats really interesting thank you for sharing that tip
Yup it’s an awesome concept
What a brilliant video. So generous !
Thanks for watching!
i am in love with the colors!!
Reggie this is incredible. I haven't seen a video so complete about posing subjects, especially normal persons. And is an area I usually find difficult.
i'm glad you found it valuable!
WoW, you are really professional.
Thanks
I really enjoyed this video and learned a lot from it. Thanks for taking the time to do it and share your techniques.
These tips are gold! thank you so much!
Very nice video, ideas and pictures Reggie! Really like your channel :)
You make me want to buy the x100v now good review even your one year review of the camera 📷

Awesome!! Gracias Reggie
oh damn, this helped a lot, thank you! some mindblowing moments in there for me :D
Absolutely enjoyed this video so much! I love hearing and seeing your thoughts on posing couples and camera angles. And all while only using an x100v! Super impressive! and the photos are stunning!
I love this and all your images are dope
Thanks my friend!
Lots of educational nuggets to get from here! Thank you so much for walking us through a very real portrait shoot!

Man. That x100v is a beast!

Nasroullah Dinally thanks for watching !
Wow, great video, Reggie! Thanks for taking us behind the scenes, it was very informative.
Glad to hear!
Such a helpful video, Reggie! The best one I’ve seen yet on this topic. It was so interesting to hear you’re an introvert. Never would have guessed it. Very encouraging for me as a fellow introvert to see how well you put them at ease throughout the shoot. And yea, I’d love another one on your poses. Keep up the awesome work!
Yup, casual conversation is not my strong suit at all. But for some reason, when I'm photographing, conversation is key to making a good portrait (similar to how you need to use a speedlight to light up a dark room), so I'm just using one of the many tools needed to create the end product.
Thank you! 👍 I’m waiting for the next one.
Stéphanie Pradervand woohoo! While you wait, share this vid with a photographer friend 🙌
Great Job, I am waiting my X100V and can't wait to use it for engagements too. I love your colors btw
Thanks so much
Awesome work !
Thanks Reggie !
TheDanich78 thanks for watching!
Well done 👏 👏👏
very cool tips! thank you
hope they were helpful!
Great video learnt a lot
Wow you did such a great job! You could tell she was super nervous and did wonderfully at helping her to relax and get some wonderful images!
Thanks for watching
Hi Reggie, this was great - thank you! A really thoughtful, thorough video with just one great tip after another all delivered in a relaxed, concise way. I don't think a moment was wasted in this video, it was all to the point. This is really useful to me, as I do wedding photography on the side but I feel I'm still very much learning. I feel I'm pretty strong in capturing the candid moments documentary style, which is my bread-and-butter, but I want to start working in more portraiture and I feel still awkward guiding people. With this great video you said at each stage why you're doing what you're doing and how you're visualising the scene, moving us through a composition as you adjust position for light and subject and informing us as to how to keep them engaged and understand what you're after - and being open to what they're after. I can see myself rewatching this video a few times.
All I can do other than give you a little salute of admiration is to say that in Wales we like to ask people to 'cwtch up' (pronounced cutch) which depending on how you say it can mean like a loving hug and moving closer, more intimately, but also to a big family group just to cheerfully cram into shot. In the wedding photographer's arsenal of vocabulary, I find it pretty indispensable. Anyway, you've definitely got another subscriber out this one. Keep up the great work and man - I hunger for that X100V, though bein in lockdown not much I can do with it yet!
Appreciate your in-depth comment and analysis. I'm glad it was helpful :) And appreciate the suggestion on the "cwtch up"!
Subscribed. This was laid back, not overly technical, and helpful! I like X100 series videos because they’re usually not gear focused, plus I have one!
Awesome!
Realy liked this one! Thanks man! 🤜
Glad to hear !
Thought this was great thanks bud, have been shooting myself for 10 years and learnt some good new tips here. Look forward to the new videos - now subscribed!
Photo by TJ glad you were able to learn something :)
Nice. I learned a lot.
Clint Woosley glad to hear!
Awesome video, love the X Factor tip!
It’s a game changer!

Great job! Very helpful for an amateur portrait photographer like myself.
Awesome!
Really insightful, hope there will be more video about how to guide people into naturally posing!
Glad it was insightful!
Thas was very informative, thank you so much Reggie ! :)

Such a good video dude! Love the whisper trick haha
Thanks Phil
Thanks man. 👍👍
Kesmond Lee you’re welcome!
Love it! I have been missing my x100T lately. You might have made me have to pick up a X100V. I like my X70, but much prefer a viewfinder. Great posing tips as well!
Great insights Reggie - & your Presets come across really well - Also thats a brave & admirable approach especially with the noticeable focal length & f/Stop Bokeh limitations in using my favorite Fuji.. Personally in doubting myself, I'd be reaching for the XT'z with 56m on a similar shoot. & I will also be looking forward to your next X100F forays. Cheerz fum AU.
I typically shoot with the 23 1.4 and 56 1.2. This exercise was more to prove to my audience to think out of the box, haha. I wouldn’t normally shoot with this camera orher than for content for an entire engagement shoot
Excellent!
Glad you liked it!
Great video Reggie. I just covered my first wedding this year and it was a little bit awkward, even though it was a good friend who was getting married.
Definitely will use your advice for future shoots though.
Keep up the great work bro!
Awesome, hope these will help. Congrats on shooting your first wedding!
Great. Thank you!
You’re welcome! How did you like the video?
Excellent video to improve our photographs, thanks for openly sharing your knowledge. I would love to see a video with your top 10 poses. Thank you very much, greetings from Peru.
Appreciate the comment Juan!
I'm gonna use that Office trick. "So now ask him WHERE ARE THE TURTLEEEEESSS"
A superb and most inspiring video Reggie, well done - earned a "subscribe" from me 👏🏻
Thanks!
Salamat bro. This was very helpful! 💯
What did you find most helpful?
Dude I've shot weddings for 14 years, yet I love to pick up on new tips. Love the tips you give here! Awesome dude!
Which did you find most helpful?
@@Reggiebphoto the X nose thing :)
Nice!
素晴らしいですね
I really love this video, practical advices on how to use my x100v. Also the colours turn out beautiful, are there any specific presets you are using for that?
Nice..
Thanks for watching!
Just one advice, when taking the photo of the ring be very carefull not to lose it, you had a place on your left that if the ring falled from your hand you could lose it :)
what made you think i'm not being careful with rings?
@@Reggiebphoto hahahaha I'm not saying you're not :) But I guess it is something to be aware
Reggie this was brilliant, thank you! I have a wedding shoot with a couple on Saturday but I’m only allowed to shoot them before and after because of coronavirus restrictions and I was scratching my head thinking how shall I do this. You just showed me! Thanks so much! Any similar you can do on this subject would be much appreciated too. Also, could you maybe show us how you took one of these photos and edited it please? 🙏🏼🤗📷
Yes I’ll definitely try and do one of those videos
Love your preset. Do share the editing process !
ua-cam.com/video/D-5R18Yxmbw/v-deo.html
Thank you very much for the effort you put into this video. So informative and well structured! What would you say is the ratio of landscape and portrait shots in such a shoot? Mostly in landscape orientation? Keep up the great work!
Honestly, it’s mostly landscape just because I’m hugely inspired by cinema. But it’s something I need to break out of.
This was great! Thank you for such great content! How are you liking the f2. Is there much difference in focus speed?
You’re welcome! I would say the focus speed is comparable or slower than the 23mm 1.4. I talk about the focus speed in this video: ua-cam.com/video/QKAFPKXWJtk/v-deo.html
Hi Regz, Awesome work and tutorials as always. Really appreciate you're sharing and teaching nobles like me. I also appreciate how time consuming it is to work and make videos like this in the same time. I always find difficult if both have big 'thing' under their chin. Kinda limit that lookdown giggle which I really like. How do you go around it? Thanks
goes to show how poses and emotion give a bigger role to the overall photo, no need for bokeh, just emotions :) , Thanks for that video! will certainly apply this techniques to my shoots after the quarantine.
Could you possibly make a video on how to deal with social anxiety during shoots as I'm an introverted photographer as well!
Seems like being an introvert is a common roadblock for a lot of my audience. Will definitely try to make a video to help on this
@@Reggiebphoto That's still my problem to this day, got all the equipment, all the concepts, and i have photos in my brain that are doable but I cant execute due to that
At that point it’s a matter of practice and real world experience. Until you try something and fail or success, the analysis paralysis will be the main blocker.
Loved this video, it was super informative. What time of day were you shooting?
this was in the morning but it was an indoor venue
Great video! Loved the edits/ colours! Did you use one of the inbuilt film simulations or are these raw edits? Thanks!
Those were raw edits
Good wurk dude
Loved this video. Beautiful couple & place! What's the name of the place you went to? Thx for more posing tips.
Hey Reggie, have you ever tried the 50mm lens attachment or the 28mm? I had both of them a few years ago and I loved them.
Amazing video, could you please share the camera settings you used for this shoot?
This was super informative. Thank you for sharing some of your knowledge! Keep it up 🙏
I'm glad my friend! Anything stand out to you as being most valuable or insightful?
Reggie Ballesteros definitely the posing and paying attention to making small adjustments, but honestly, everything was helpful
Awesome video! I really enjoy your reels too! I just got a x100v and these videos are so helpful! Love the location too!!! Where is this at?
this is the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers
@@Reggiebphoto amazing place! Amazing photos!
Another great video! How much time do you plan for a couple photoshoot like this?
1-hour is the typical duration.
great video with great advice! is the 23mm lens on the x100v better than the 23mm 1.4 lens? for shooting in different environments like indoors low light and general photography ?
the 23mm 1.4 is still my go-to for professional work (where I need low light or pleasing portraits). this was merely a test and proof of concept.
Hi Reggie. Great video and great natural portrait photographs. I just got the x100v and love it. I see all your photos were set f/2.0. Did you use aperture priority mode and keep camera on f/2.0 or were all settings done manually?
I shoot in manual
Helpful tutorial Reggie. An unrelated question, what is your camera bag you are using?
Nice portraits !!! Which flash did you use ?
I didn't use flash. That's a gopro
Great video! Just wondering do you use Fuji's built in film simulations and if so what do you use?
I use my own custom preset in Lightroom for all my editing, not film simulations.
She’s wearing a Snow White outfit!
Haha true!
Awesome Video Reggie! Thank you!!! Would you consider the X100V to be good enough for a wedding? My only concern would be that is has just one SD card slot.
If you have the skills, yup it’s capable
Can you link me to the GoPro looking attachment you have on the X100V and maybe give me a short description on what you use it for?
It’s a GoPro. And I use it to film the first person video footage
Super in-depth deconstruction and absolutely gorgeous photos. One question I did not hear you mentioning during the video did you use the build in flash at any point as I have heard that it is very good for just filling in a tiny bit of light?
Frank Lindner no flash
@@Reggiebphoto Have you made experiences with the Fill-Flash though.
No not for portraits like this
Hi How do you get the lights right? with a flash?
Can you please tell me what device you connected instead of the flash? Is it a monitor or something?
GoPro
Hi. How are your settings in the c1 till c7
All my settings ua-cam.com/video/J0GxIQkmTbo/v-deo.html
took you long enough for this one. ;)
was it worth the wait?
@@Reggiebphoto definitely
Could u recommend a compact on camera flash for x100v for weddings?
A flash that works well is the tt350. However I don’t feel that flash is powerful enough for weddings
Yeah, I think so too.
That's nothing in between tt350 & tt685/v860 though.
😅
Hi Reggie
I have a question for you..
are you shooting in raw with the x100v?
Or used a film simulation?
for this session it's raw.
@@Reggiebphoto 👌🏼
The preset I use for editing these files is this one: www.shopmoment.com/digital-products/home-preset-pack-reggie-ballesteros/
A more posing focused Video would be great, also with more hints in what directions you give.
Sounds good!
What's ontop of your camera?
A GoPro
Is that an ona bag?
Yup
