-What happened to your leg?
-I got run over by a car while cycling
-You should have worn a helmet
I've basically heard that exact conversation once
I actually had doctors use this argument on me. I was hit by a car about 3 years ago and broke several ribs and shattered my right scapula. I also had a small scratch on my head (which they wanted to stitch up. I said gtfo, I have done worse making lunch) and yet the doctors and nurses all went on about how I should wear a helmet. Never mind the broken bones, let's focus on something that would not have helped one bit in the crash and MAY have actually made it worse. Had they argued for body armor I would have at least had to concede their points were based on reality.
harshbarj I think thats because the most likely thing that can happen to a leg or arm is it gets Broken. the most likely thing to happen to your head is you get brain damage and go in to a coma and never wake up or not to be able live a normal life ever again. But yeah I know its still your choice but I just want to know why you don’t where a helmet?
@@jamesbisset9891 People with brain damage can lead normal lives. Wording.

bombs < Bikes
Thousand of bomber crews lost, all the effort and planning when we could've just as well dropped a few dozen paratroopers in a foggy night to build a few kilometers of cycling lanes in London.
well, if you build bike lanes like the Americans build freeways…
I am Colombian, and was visiting London with my daughter, it was her first time in London, so we took one of those double decker tour Buses, and I found shocking, that every time there was a bus stop next to a bike lane, the driver, would alert people getting off the bus, to be careful with the bike lanes and the reckless cyclists, when at the same time there was a very dangerous road with a lots of car traffic right beside it.
coming from a less developed country, Bogota can't compete against London in many aspects, but one thing is for sure, Bike Infrastructure and Culture in Bogota, although far from perfect , is light years ahead of London
I cannot agree with you more! This has been the only video from this channel which kind of annoyed me because it doesnt discuss the cycling culture amongst cyclists. Some (of course not all) cycle very fast and are very careless. Of course not all of them, and of course with drivers and cars you also have many careless drivers, but for the most part I find that drivers in London are respectful of pedestrians (in Europe too of course), they may be rude and careless with other drivers but not pedestrians, whereas my experience with cyclists in London has been the opposite unfortunately.
You guys are lucky to have public transit and good cycling infra.... I live in the extremely car-oriented city of Pune
@@salahd The thing is, when cycling is a risky business it'll be risk seekers that cycle...
A whole other situation than in the Netherlands, where your grandma and your 8 years old can get around town safely. And they do.
Our towns are not more roomy than yours, we just made different choices. By now three generations of drivers have grown up as full time cyclists. That phenomenon explains the lack of thrill seeking 'cycling culture' and petty tribalism amongst participants in traffic.
It is the main reason why the "build it and they will come" strategy is so successful!
If that's what you're looking for, you have to build it right! And start yesterday...
Well, at my dorm the busstop is right next to a bicycle lane as well, so I have to look out in order not to run under a bike 😅
They're not more reckless than a car by any means, the damage of getting hit by a bike is much much smaller though so I'd rather get hit by a bike than a car
Here's one thing you haven't taken into consideration is that London is older than your entire country.

Funny how this video is almost like a mirror of what is going on here in São Paulo, Brazil. The previous mayor was very much a bike enthusiast and he begun to build miles and miles of cycle lanes. Same problems with cars, buses, shop owners and local politicians. But even with all the fight the process of turning São Paulo into a cycling city was moving forward really fast. Then he left office and now everything went to a halt. The cycle lanes are being left without proper maintenance, as a consequence cars and buses fell more empowered to be aggressive toward the cyclists, more people are getting injured or dying and we seem to be moving backwards. Shame.
When will they learn?

As a Dutch person, I found this very funny.
Started cycling in April last year as my daily commute and I have never ever forgotten the "never cycle on the left side of a lorry" advice - every single time I pass a lorry or a van I'm reminded, thanks a bunch
Would that be opposite for rest of the world :D ?
@@kanal2123a yep. it actually is; in austria, there has been talk about making a turn-off assistant compulsory because of exactly this. as a cyclist, I always stay behind lorries and buses and only pass on the right if there is no chance for them to turn right.
Good, that will preserve your life way more than a helmet. In some places they have cycle-specific traffic lights which operate alongside the primary traffic lights, and change to green a few seconds earlier. This gives cyclists a chance to get ahead of any traffic that might crush them by turning left or right.
i mean why risk it its sadly how it is today and i risking life to maybe get there 5 seconds faster isnt worth it to me i can wait the little time for ithem to pass
@Thelondonbadger That's victim blaming: the cyclist should be given priority as that is the healthier way to travel. The bully, the driver of the motorcycle is the one at fault as he's doing damage to everyone by driving.
Don't blame the victims: change the bullies to better behaviour (in this case driving where you expect small children/dogs to suddenly pop up around you).

I think we're due an update on this video. Cycling/cycle infrastructure in London has exploded since the pandemic (no doubt partially thanks to this video!)
As someone living in the Netherlands; I rarely find myself in a situation where I would *need* a car. There's no place public transport can't take me, and our bikes are designed to transport goods as well as people. And everything that is too big to carry, I can get delivered to my home at the same costs of a car trip to and from the store.
Do you live in Randstad?
But also, define "too big for a bike".
For the Dutch, things are rarely too big
Speaking from someone currently living in Stevenage:
There are people using the bike lanes now !! B/c of this whole 'one exercise a day' thing going on with the pandemic, people are getting on their bikes and actually using the lanes !
Steeeeeeeeeeeeevenage
Which kinda defeats the whole social distancing thing doesn't it? If so many are using the bike lanes, there's going to be loads of contagients in the air from sweatlords.
@Human Resources Suspended droplets, nuff said.
@Human Resources Feel free to ride your bicycle 10 meters behind the person in front of you then.
Regardless of how much that person sneezes you are fine because the droplets all magically fall to ground after exactly one meter and no more.
@@RealCadde On my way to work these days I see many many more people on the streets, especially joggers. People have really taken the once a day limit to mean "Oh, maybe now's the perfect time to actually exercise?" And we wonder why we get stupid election results
"Superhighway" made me think of a massive 2-way bike lane with 3 lanes each way.
Yeah. Having lived in the Netherlands I'd call it an almost decent bike lane
Super shite way more like when compared to proper cycle ways in the netherlands. They probably also don't use some stupid exaggerated name for their cycle lanes/ways like london.

They're planning to rename them

0:52 that subtle reference, "the quiet ways" while playing "it's oh so quiet" by bjork, nice
We need an update where you explain induced demand and how adding car lanes, increased congestion, and removing them in place of other transport options for shorter distance journeys decreases congestion
Let's not forget that the theory of "induced demand" is exactly that - a theory. Recently, people made it into a bit of a magical phenomenon, where people apparently just buy new cars whenever a new lane is opened and then fill up that lane - which of course is rubbish.
"Induced demand" is just a consequence of bad road planning and the fact, that many city and road planners fail to properly detect bottlenecks in their system.
Or with other words, if the sparkling new 12-lane superhighway is being squeezed into a few narrow residential roads then of course, the superhighway will have traffic jams, even if you add a bazillion new lanes.
This whole concept of "wider roads make driving nicer and therefore people use the road more, so as a logical consequence we need to make the life of drivers more difficult" is absolutely batshit crazy.
@@ArxInvicta lol ur so wrong
nobody is saying people are buying more cares whenever a new lane is added. bottlenecks are a part of it, but definitely not the only problem. lane expansions speed up traffic temporarily, but more people will chose that route more than before, as it has higher capacity. leading you back to square 1. you cant mandate everyone to evenly spread out traffic routes. people chose the most direct and best route. it is not a "batshit crazy" concept. it is quite literally causing an influx of demand. it is an objectively observable phenomenon. adding more car lanes is not going to fix traffic and it never has. the only way to reduce car traffic is to provide viable and reliable alternatives to driving. and that's just induced demand, i haven't even mentioned the increased danger of absurdly wide roads and their design language.
I spotted that surprise Tom Scott at 3:37
Ehhhhhhhhh it's Evan
i found him too.
Is it weird that I absolutely expected him to be there, interacting with a lamp post?

The argument that removing automobile infrastructure in favour of cycle infrastructure will kill of businesses was also mooted in the Netherlands back when they started to prioritise cycling...and they also found that businesses not only didn't suffer, but actually thrived.
Because when you aren't cocooned in your metal prison going at high speeds, you tend to notice more places than just the chain stores and restaurants...
When going some distance on a bike, suddenly you feel hungry, and you get to try some awesome food from a place you've never even knew existed before
@Thelondonbadger Thankfully that isn't a problem in my city
The argument that removing automobile infrastructure in favour of cycle infrastructure will kill of businesses was also mooted in the bumble-fuck small town back when they started to prioritise cycling...and they also found that businesses not only didn't suffer, but actually thrived.
So naturally the same thing will happen in a roaring metropolis right?
Look your comparison only means anything if you are comparing apples to apples, and you aren't.
@@AvNotasian NotAsian you know that the Netherlands isn't just a cluster fuck small tiny villages and towns? There are enough big cities like: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Leeuwarden, Maastricht and many more. And that in those big cities more bikes also helped business improve instead if killing them off.
@geheimschriver People riding a random bike to a train station or shops is not at all similar to what hes talking about.
In Japan the bikes are used to travel short distances quickly, not for commuting long distances.
As someone who actually visited tokyo you cannot just ride your bike everywhere.
The japanese way of doing it would probably work, super cheap designed bikes (some still don't have brakes) increases ease of access and storage areas at public transport, parks and supermarkets creates an actual use for every area.
Riding your bike through traffic like a fuckwit and demanding the city get transformed so you can be an idiot isn't the same thing.
In Japan its a convenience thing, in the west for some idiot reason its a virtue thing.
Like you will note there is a lack of cycling infrastructure in japan, yet still a massive number of people ride their bikes.

Almere (a Dutch planned town) also has separated cycling and bus lanes, great roads, and mostly free parking, just like Stevenage, yet people still cycle here. Perhaps not as much as they would if driving was more difficult, but still, people cycle just because they choose to.
maybe maintaining a car and parking and fuel are all very expensive, and parking maybe is shite/they don't have somewhere to actually park near their home or office anyway?

No, let's be real smart and rethink Rush Hour!!!
More remote working thereby eliminating the two inefficient spikes in travel patterns.
We should be able to get rush hour travel demand closer to the level of travel at midday.
No need then for bikes and empty cycle tracks during the day. No need for clogged up
footpaths which makes walking a less pleasant experience. No need for over complex
junctions which can revert to simple traffic slips/lanes with more space for landscaping.

Not complaining. Literally, cause we have good cycle paths :^)
That, and they are everywhere. In a lot of countries, separate cycling infrastructure is only considered a necessity in larger built-up areas, whereas the Netherlands has separate cycling lanes for pretty much every road in the country, with the only real exceptions being rural streets leading from and to farms, and even those roads, while lacking in separate cycling infrastructure, are still much safer to cycle on than pretty much any cycle lane in Britain or Germany or another cycling-averse European country.

also drivers complaining about cyclists being “idiots” or “dangerous” always seem to forget that they’re in a large metal box which weighs tons. or tonnes. either way, big metal box of potential death. hopefully the new highway code will make certain drivers (especially BMWs) get their heads out their arses and not kill people
What's wrong woth BMWs?
And funnily enough it's not the majority of cyclists who cause issues. People using it to go from point A to point B are really nice actually!
The problem here in Belgium is that there's a huge cycling culture like the professional ones ("koersen" is how we call it or "coureurs" for the people). They tend to move in groups and just completely neglect all traffic laws. Suddenly they turn into a street or drive in the middle of the road or turn onto the road you're on without stopping when they should. I had to go into London during the last lockdown, and I took my bike on the train... It was just heaven riding around London's deserted streets.
some people will look back on 2020 as the good times, despite all the pandemic and death and stuff
Oh yeah - lockdowns were heaven!!! LoL!!!
Bike infrastructure will never be good in a country where "cycle path" sounds almost exactly the same as "psychopath".
Nice one
@mathew lawton Have you tried pulling over for a fast vehicle on a pair of wheels that max travels at a 1/6th of the speed of your normal road? They should just let cyclists go on the bloody pavements, we have virtually no pedestrians in this country anyway and almost all cycling deaths are from drivers hitting them, not cyclists making mistakes.
Hahahahaha that's a good one
Translation of @mathew lawton 's comment:
"The reason for that is cyclists being psychopath.
They cut up everyone thinking they own the roads which 99% of them never use. And when they get killed by cutting up trucks, they act like it wasn't their faults.
As a firefighter, the cyclists..."
I couldn't understand last part, my idiot-asshole-with-first-grade-grammar-ish is a bit off.
@mathew lawton Speaking as a Dane who cycles, this is true. When I get on 2 wheels, it's like all my normal conscientiousness is removed and I become a monster, who cannot recognise where other people would want to walk or where cars have the right of way. It's almost as though I think it makes me invulnerable, being on 2 wheels and being able to control my speed and direction to a degree I would never be able to on 4 wheels or on none, like it doesn't actually make me far more vulnerable than any carist out there, who will just have to hold back somehow from mowing me down.

I was shocked! How does he even know that's a thing? I thought this series only had British references.
I cycled around London a lot a few years back and it was fine. I hope more and more people will do it, it will benefit all.
Nah, I'd rather walk!!! Hate bicycles!

I find it hilarious that UA-cam auto generated closed captions change “cycle paths” into “psychopaths”....
returning to this video now knowing what Captain Scarlet is made me appreciate that transition.
8:08 wait, is that… left bank two! I just got a hit of nostalgia from an unfinished London video
great video jay. as a lorry driver who drives in london, i would love to see more cycle lanes. there are so many cyclists now i'm so worried i haven't seen one. stay safe everyone.
Well said Sir. And unlike most pillocks in cars you've got a good reason to be on the road.
Unfortunately there’s no obligation for bicycles to use an available cycle lane - you need only look at the junction at parliament square: as soon as the traffic lights turn red on the bike lane, bikes cross over the low pavement into the adjacent lane and Inevitably up the inside of left moving vehicles. I’ve cycled there in rush hour and have seen so many close calls
C7TV Yes I agree it’s terrible. I am all for bike lanes but I think they need to be regulated as they do in the Netherlands. Anyone not cycling in a bike lane or weeving between cars, jumping lights ect.. gets a fine.
Me too! It would be much easier to improve my KD ratio and continue my kill streak.
It is so fucking terrifying. I feel like I need mod type mirrors installed pointing in every direction.
Road tax was abolished in the UK in 1934 to make way for an emission based payment scheme where you pay for the amount your vehicle pollutes. So, ahhh.
Which is a good thing in theory, to get people to drive smaller, less "dirty" cars. The tax curve of course needs to be bent accordingly.

@@dcarbs2979 Exactly as it should be! :)
@mathew lawton He just put the wrong date. I think we can all see who the twat is here, and it's not the OP.
@mathew lawton and @Jacob Powell . WRONG. Vehicle Excise Duty was introduced in the 20's. Originally ring fenced for Roads. In the 30s it was moved into the general pot.
Pre 2001 where it moved into the emissions bands there were 3 Car bands. Historic (Over 25yo until Blair had it frozen at 1/1/1973 in 1997) Under 1549cc and one for 1550cc+ .
It's changed again since but as none of my vehicles are in those categories I haven't paid any attention to them
what a great series. Love it

I like how the "explain everything we can" section of UA-cam is basically its own interconnected web of people who explain everything they can. Could probably just draw names off a sub list and play "six degrees of Tom Scott".

I'm a Dane currently living in Norwich, and I am terrified not only by people cycling around Norwich, but how dangerous it is and how fast they are going. I am originally from Copenhagen, where we have really good bicycle lanes and in school we were taught as children how to behave as a bicyclist. Cycling is a great way to promote a healthy lifestyle to your citizens, and it can even be a faster way to commute too!
The people who are going fast are just trying to get to work even quicker
@@TurboAutist-sg7lo nah, you can cycle the whole year if you're not a coward. And make sure to use winter tires.

As a Dutch person I totally agree
Building the lanes would also remove some of the traffic on roads, resulting in less traffic jams. Therefore in think building cycling lanes could actually make car traveling more efficient

In Denmark, the fact that you wear a helmet depends on where you come from.
In flat cities like Copenhagen and Esbjerg, the majority don't wear a helmet. (Most of the suburbs to Esbjerg btw. has cycle habbits like Stevenage).
In Aarhus, which is not as flat, most people wear a helmet.
I thought Unfinished London was finished with, but I guess... there was... unfinished business.
