There are concerns about the current eruption at Mauna Loa because there is a lot of Pele's Hair (which is what they call that type of formation in Hawaii, after the volcano goddess Pele), and as it fragments into very small, very sharp little bits of glass, it's getting carried aloft by hot air currents. As someone that lives in Ellesmere Port, and has done for the last 20 years, I can confirm it does regularly smell pretty bad due to all the chemical plants in the area.
Tom starting the hike with saying he did not check the forecast sure was a bit of foreshadowing. I do find it interesting that having missed it last time he this time choose to go in blind and hoping for the best.
"You did see a volcano, it just wasn't working" Well yes Gary, in that case I've also seen some volcanoes, but I didn't get my hopes up because when I climbed those they hadn't been 'working' for decades or millennia or a million years.
There's no supermarket chain called 'England', but there's one in the American South called 'Ingles', which is a sort-of homograph of the Spanish word, 'inglés', which means, well... 'English'. As a Spanish speaker, it's already intrinsically hilarious, but the idea that Tom's analogy could (sort of) come true if they open an Ingles in England makes it even better.
I love that Tom is like "I've got flapjacks and chocolate, what could go wrong?" And meanwhile CGP Grey puts up a video about all the survival gear he has to keep in his car because of all of the times he's almost died filming videos.

I want to give Tom the biggest hug. If there's one person that deserves to have his very reasonable childhood fantasy fulfilled it's the MVP of UA-cam.
I can relate to the disappointment. My family were planning a trip to Hawaii when I graduated high school, and the years-long eruption of Kilauea stopped that spring.
I love the idea that any time Tom's head is getting too big from doing cool things on UA-cam and getting more famous, he just hangs out with Matt, Gary and Chris to just mercilessly rib him and bring him back down to earth.

Had a long layover in Iceland recently, so I wound up going to the lava show since this video made me aware of it. You *really* don't want to breathe bits of that in, apparently (glass + lungs = bad).
I would genuinely love a video from Tom entitled ''I don't drink Alcohol, I try getting shitfaced''
That has to be a Tom Scott Plus video with someone like How to Drink or Educated Barfly.
OMG YES PLEASE
I try being a mixologist
Maybe after he goes back to Iceland a third time and STILL DOESN'T SEE A VOLCANO!.
...okay, is the angle he drinks, or is the angle he can do anything to get some kind of shitfaced EXCEPT drink alcohol? (pro mode: no drugs of any kind allowed; must change consciousness with other means) Because the latter I could totally see Tom doing, and it would be interesting as hell. (The former, okay, I'd probably watch that too. :D)
Toms reaction to cresting that hill was just the best. even if it does suck
As someone that lives in Ellesmere Port, and has done for the last 20 years, I can confirm it does regularly smell pretty bad due to all the chemical plants in the area.
Man, tom really did try to embody the "technical difficulties"
I'd like to think the volcano was just so flabbergasted from meeting Tom that it forgot what it was doing
Tom starting the hike with saying he did not check the forecast sure was a bit of foreshadowing.
I do find it interesting that having missed it last time he this time choose to go in blind and hoping for the best.
"You did see a volcano, it just wasn't working"
Well yes Gary, in that case I've also seen some volcanoes, but I didn't get my hopes up because when I climbed those they hadn't been 'working' for decades or millennia or a million years.
Yeah, I've seen a couple decommissioned volcanoes in my lifetime
"Icelandic mexican fusion cuisine" sounds like an answer someone would give on Citation Needed
'Why do they need an Iceland in Iceland??'
'They still...buy frozen stuff.'
'Yeah I s'pose.'
Logic is a lovely thing.
Tom has now taken revenge against the caves and the volcanoes. What's left? Are any of us safe?
Edit: never mind XD
So far it’s 2-0 to the volcano
Seeing the comment get edited live was amazing
The sea is left I don't think he's done surfing or kayaking yet but it's possible I missed it.
I'm fully expecing Tom to commit to the bit and try to see the lava every time there is an eruption. I hope you succeed one day, Tom!
I predict a volcanologist will see this, reach out to Tom, and we'll have a new video on his main channel some time in April.
I love that Tom is like "I've got flapjacks and chocolate, what could go wrong?" And meanwhile CGP Grey puts up a video about all the survival gear he has to keep in his car because of all of the times he's almost died filming videos.
Really?
When Tom arrived, the volcano was having technical difficulties!
My heart goes out to Tom in the moment he crested that ridge and saw the cone with no activity.
Hopefully you'll see your volcanoe one of these days Tom! It's a sight worth a couple disappointing hikes.
I want to give Tom the biggest hug. If there's one person that deserves to have his very reasonable childhood fantasy fulfilled it's the MVP of UA-cam.
I love how this is what follows the helicopter.
You tricked me into watching tom hike for 20 minutes, well done
I can relate to the disappointment. My family were planning a trip to Hawaii when I graduated high school, and the years-long eruption of Kilauea stopped that spring.
I love the idea that any time Tom's head is getting too big from doing cool things on UA-cam and getting more famous, he just hangs out with Matt, Gary and Chris to just mercilessly rib him and bring him back down to earth.
So, every time Tom leaves the uk to go on a filming trip, we are all at risk of getting a bad case of ‘volcanos’.
In five years, Tom is gonna upload the volcano video he keeps wanting to do. It doesn't matter if anyone still wants to watch.
Tom takes a walk up a hill a.k.a. the technical difficulties roast Tom for 21 minutes and 58 seconds
Your conversations are always so pleasant to listen to. I could listen to you four all day long
This is one of the most heartbreaking videos I’ve watched. Devastating.
Ah Tom's face of disappointment is very real :(
I was in Iceland a month ago and I climbed that volcano and I went to that lava show!!! Amazing to see Tom retracing my steps (or I guess I was retracing his but didn't know it yet)
I 100% recommend the lava show, and the soup they sell afterwards
It has just started erupting again Tom. If you go now, you might just make it!
Gary, matt and chris simultaneously making fun of tom 😭😂 under prepared tourist with stick selfie lmaooo
19:40 Matt misses an important point: Since Iceland has a lot of Geothermal power, that Lava may be made using Vulcanos, but with extra steps.
That’s a good point
the look of heartbreak on poor Tom's face after cresting the hill
I love your videos anyway but all of them being subtitled is the cherry on top. Thanks for taking the time!
Well, if you can't see the lava in the wild, why shouldn't you be able to see it in captivity?
Tom saw a volcano AND lava ... just not at the same time and place. For me it is mission accomplished.
9:11 Tom obviously missed the fact that walking is waaaay cooler than using a helicopter. As proven by Boromir himself.
"The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Dormant Volcano" coming to theatres this Christmas!
love matt trying to pronounce eyjafjellajökull and somehow finding a t
That's actually the correct pronounciation
Had a long layover in Iceland recently, so I wound up going to the lava show since this video made me aware of it. Tom's right, you can't quite capture the feel of that place on film, with all the other senses involved. It's something. (And Matt's right, the place does have a certain waft. Thought there was something wrong at the airport at first.)
20:11 at this point nobody has the heart to make fun of him any more.
"There is an Iceland in Iceland." I believe the existence of such was posited during the Citation Needed about the ice block expedition.
