2023 has been an amazing year for mario. Mario Movie, Mario Wonder, Mario RPG Remake, SNW Orlando, The INCREDIBLE last 3 waves of Mario Kart dlc, i mean come on.
I've beaten every 2D Super Mario game and I really enjoyed Wonder, it's great they could make the series creative and innovative again. NSMB2 and U were good games, but didn't innovate the series enough. So I'm glad we got a new 2D adventure that felt different, just like the originals on the NES and SNES.
Personally I really love this game and I definitely think that it’s the best 2d Mario. Also you didn’t really talk about in the video but man the animations in this game are top tier like they give the game a lot of personality.
@@HDRookieIt managed to make even the oldest enemies really fun and exciting to see. I distinctly remember being excited to see dry bones, mechakoopas, and thwomps due to just how pretty they looked. It was also nice seeing nipper plants for the first time in 20+ years
I personally enjoyed odyssey but i can understand your feelings towards it. I would probably say wonder better executed what it was trying to achieve with its gimmicks and ideas whilst odyssey feels like a lot of moons kinda feel wasted on basic, uinspired missions which distract from the more entertaining missions. In my opinion, the moon count should have been halved. That said i have often felt theres this belief that open ended mario is always better but i honestly think theres a reason why games like galaxy and the old 2d marios are so praised, because they are often idea factories. I feel this game reminds me of galaxy in a strange way, not only because the spin badge is literally 2d galaxy but also because i feel each level has you on edge as to what crazy new idea would come next. For me i dont really have a preference for linear vs open mario, both have their pros and cons. Personally the wonder flowers really sold the game for me and i love the variety and constant creativity. I do personally wish secret exits played a slightly bigger role as well. For me this is easily the best 2d mario since world, while world will always have a special place in my heart, wonder puts up one hell of a fight and in many ways, to me at least exceeds it. For me personally, its an S-tier mario regardless of it being a 2d game.
All well said. I didn't hate Odyssey either, but I did prefer the Galaxies. Even the original open ended Mario's felt more deliberate in what they went after (sunshine maybe a little too much). I really liked that 64 truly felt like a choose your own adventure if playing any%. Galaxy kinda followed despite its linear level design.
Been watching your content for a while and I gotta agree with a lot of stuff you said in this video. I enjoyed Mario Wonder a lot, and can definitely understand the capture mechanic being less interesting than some wonder effects. As an Odyssey speedrunner, I've always found Cappy and the movement options he allows for to be the main feature of Odyssey at least for me, as captures are generally less interesting than core Mario movement upon replays of the game. I do think Mario Wonder could've been a bit more unique and different, but I'm very satisfied with the steps forward it took for 2D Mario. (I just wish more cutscenes were skippable because they make the Speedrun a lot longer than I'd like)
Super valid. Cappy is more than just a transformation tool, so he will have that perk. The flower only really dives deeper into transformations, but that is kind of par for the course for Nintendo I'd say.
I have similar feelings about Odyssey and I was worried about Wonder. This was the first 2D Mario I would give a score higher than a 7/10. While it's not my favorite Mario game on switch (Bowser's Fury has it beat) it is easily my favorite 2D Mario
As someone who enjoys DK64, hard disagree. The major collectable on a collectathon should feel like it has more weight to it than moons on odyssey. However, triple moons do this well i'd kinda like the base moons and triple moons to be separate collectables.
@@HDRookie i'm of the minority who think sunshine while clearly rushed, is the most fun of the 3d marios, and i would pay full price for an enhanced remake that fixes some of the problems (easy way to track how many blues are accessable in an episode, corona mountain as a full stage, pachinco jank fixed)

I've played and 100%'d DK64. I'm allowed to prefer games like SM64 and Sunshine and wish that their sequels followed suit!
