While I'm sure the die hard Mario Maker community would go bonkers over a 3D Mario Maker game, the vast majority of players would be overwhelmed. Many already struggle with decent level design; adding a third dimension wouldn't do anyone any favours.
I do believe we'll see MM3 on Nintendos next console...3D seems like a pipe dream. New themes, sounds effects, enemies, incorporating the badge system from Wonder... There's still a lot to be desired for 2D Mario games.
