It's like finding the Pot of Gold at the end of the Pentatonic Rainbow, when you explain all these concepts in your teaching style..........it's so great....thanks!
Learning the 5 boxes and how to play through them was my justification for buying my first "real" guitar a few years ago. But then I moved directly into learning the full major and minor scales without really doing anything with what I had already learned. This lesson and the Billy Gibbons lesson have been my kick in the butt to quit moving to other things before you can be musical with what you have already learned. Thanks once again, David.
I've played guitar all my life and I never stop learning. I love you're style of teaching. When it gets down to it flash and shredding is great but the guy that can make your spine tingle bending a note or hitting that perfect triad with a slide into next run gets my attention. I've been places and just hearing someone making that guitar talk immedietly gets my attention.
Totally agree - been playing for years, gig in a band, people think I’m good but I still get those moments where something leaps out that’s been in plain sight for years and I’ve never really noticed it. I still learn new ideas almost weekly. Hope it carries on!
You always have a way of explaining things in an absolutely absorbable way !! The "pockets" idea is something I've always done but I've never really thought of them that way !! Definitely opened my eyes to a better of visualizing them on the fretboard !! Thanks so much for this & all you do !!
I've been banging my head against the wall for years now, trying to learn lead guitar, this vid might just be a break through moment for me, thank you man.
This absolutely is one of the most inspiring lessons on pentatonic boxes I have seen so far. I always love your lessons ... but this one is very special to me. Later today, I will grab my looper and try out what the new learned stuff can mean for my playing. Thank you so much!!!
Enjoyed this tremendously and you read my mind. I was thinking after the Gibbons video how I'd really dig exploring those "pockets" a bit more. Cheers!
Killer lesson really affirmed for me that I have been practicing the right things! Your instruction is always top notch There could definitely be a part two where the b2 from the Phrygian the raised 6th for the Dorian feel or choosing to flat the 6th for the Aeolian/minor feel could be incorporated within the pockets much like you did the flat 5th (blue note). I think that same diagram showing these modal bonus notes with the pentatonic would blow a lot of minds. I have been using the “pockets” for a while now never knew what to call them besides by shape…great to have a name now to refer to them by!
Great lesson! Great Tone on that Strat! Especially in Em, would be great in corporate some open strings into these licks? Using the middle of the neck shapes with available open strings opens up a whole world of licks…different lesson.
Great stuff kind of a sneaky way of teaching the pentatonic boxes just using the high notes 👏 and yes sure can hear those B and C notes pop in that section Bravo Dave 👏 👍🤘
I remember learning a similar thing but I took the Johnson/Bonamassa route. Expanded on the whole concept though. Guthrie Govan and Marty Friedman are the guys I learned it from, where you take your pocket and within the pocket just glide over a diatonic note. I got that from Guthrie Govan. Marty Friedman i noticed did that more in a lick format. Basically I call it playing "within." I'll take a lick and grab a note from a diatonic scale that's between pentatonic notes. The goal though is to still get the feel of the lick even though I'm gliding over this "outside" notes. If you simplify a lot of Marty's licks and focus on where the pentatonic shapes are, he does this all over place.
This will be a great help to many pickers. Really laid it out logically. Sadly it reminded me of what I've forgotten, This will be front & center first thing I practice for a while. Pentatonics . Always put me in an Allman Bros. mood, Do I hear the next ' Pocket Lesson' knockin' on the door?
Another great video - nicely reinforces the power of these small patterns but you emphasise the importance of knowing where the root is. That really is key and something that annoys me about the idea of there being 5 pentatonic patterns. There’s only one pentatonic scale in the key, it’s the same notes around the root.
I like this guy…my other UA-cam Guitar Trainer left UA-cam..I just cast this on my tv and practice along..made guitar playing make more sense..tytytyty
Hi David, great lesson !! (as usual) I'm sure you've mentioned it before but what is your signal path. I really like your tone. Great sustain and it sounds like a bunch of mids too. THANKS
Loved the way you targeted the outside notes, really sounded good, but you really need to know what's going on to do this. I'm just not there yet. Not sure I ever will be.
David, only you could get me to watch a 20- something min video on pentatonics and scales- great teacher!! Can you PLEASE do a video on the scales John Notto of Dirty Honey uses? He plays some fantastic solos live and when he drifts out of the pentatonic- he’s unbelievably technical. A 3 licks lesson, a breakdown of chords/ scales, would be brilliant. Thanks David and get video!!
Well you forget to mention that the 3rd chord tone of the IV chord is not in the pentatonic scale as well as which mixolydian mode do you play over the V chord since the 3rd chord tone of the V chord is a raised 3rd which is "not in key" in minor blues. You don't want your students playing wrong notes on stage do you. You should make a video lesson going over these basics to know what to do over the IV chord and V chord because you can't play the pentatonic scale in the key because of the 3rds of the IV chord and the 3rd of the V chord are not in the minor pentatonic scale. A lot of people overlook this which is a big problem
I get notes and stuffs... But Where is the number 2 ball, Dave? I don't understand! Are the numbers on the balls the sequence? ... I'm not stupid but this making me embarrassingly stupid. ...So frustrating. Just don't get it, bro. The "jam" sounded great BTW.
Fantastic lesson! You hit it head on. That’s what people want the freedom to do. Freely solo on a jam, more than one way. Thank you David!
This lesson speaks volumes to me. Played just the pentatonic and never really progressed. This takes it to the next level with attitude!! Thank you!!😊
Thanks again, for the inspiration, keeps me from being dull !!

@@PaulJonesy exactly.
It would have been a whole different game if they had youtube in the 80s
Is that a sheep with a mask? ...I love it! Right on.

Badass Brewster!! Such a great lesson. Those pockets need to be explored to the fullest. Everyone of them is a wellspring.
Hands down brother ... all of your lessons are the best !! I always learn something new when I watch you videos. Sincerely thank you.
Back to basic - love it - never under estimate what started it all! The people you love to listen to most are the ones that target those key changes
Some really good info, really digging the pentatonic journey and the colored balls in the charts make for a great visual. Keep'em coming!
This video was incredible. While simplistic in thought this idea is huge and extremely helpful. Thank you.
Please create more videos in this vein.
I have learned so much from watching just 2 of your lesson videos!!! Excited to check out the rest. Thank-you Sir!!!!
Man... I wish i had a Dolorean...and some plutonium,to go back 25years😔with this lesson..Great wisdom as allways..you'r the best🇸🇪
I've been banging my head against the wall for years now, trying to learn lead guitar, this vid might just be a break through moment for me, thank you man.
Definitely my favorite you tube player/instructor! Thank you David!

That was eye opening for sure! Guess I finally learned triads from this! Thanks a lot
Pentatonic highway...it's the roadmap baby..the road map...great lesson!
Wow... that harmonic arpeggio was very reminiscent of Paul Gilbert. Very well done good sir... thank you for today's lesson.
Brilliant!!!!!!! Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
All right this is going to be great there will be something to do when I get off work tonight
Another awesome lesson, tons of tips. Thanks so much
Great lesson, you can really see versatility of five notes.
You have such a great feel to your soloing.
Enjoyed this tremendously and you read my mind. I was thinking after the Gibbons video how I'd really dig exploring those "pockets" a bit more. Cheers!

Great lesson, Dave. Thanks!
So awesome. Cant stop watching this video over and over. So much to learn. Thanks. Also, good to have tabs with patreon.
Great lesson...keep up the good work!
Great Lesson Mr. Brewster
Man I love the way you play, the tone is killer. Glad Im a patron!!!

My favorite players use the 3 note per string pentatonic licks. They give ya the coolest fusion sound! Great Lesson as always 🍺‘ski!🤘
Great lesson as usual....thanks !
I love your Unison Bends , they are effortless ; )
Awesome teaching!!
Love the billiards added to the mix. Saw it on your last BFG video and thought it was great!
GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!
❤️ watching this channel..👍
Kinda reminds me of Frampton. The intro jam.
Killer lesson!
Thank you!!! Very helpful

Zabardast cheers from Toronto....
Just found your channel. I wish I would have found your material earlier.

Great as always Dave,I’ve always wondered the name of the amp you play through.
Yeah, good stuff...putting a framework around d things I've been doing for years but with structure. Thx
Your Channel is awesome !
Howabout a lesson on blazing fast ascending pentatonic runs. For example like the one in pat travers snortin whiskey solo... thanks
You get a chance check out Preston Black from Athens alabama. He's a guitar teacher and won one of zakk Wyldes contest and jammed with Paul Gilbert
I like this guy…my other UA-cam Guitar Trainer left UA-cam..I just cast this on my tv and practice along..made guitar playing make more sense..tytytyty
Worthy!
This is awesome. I feel like I know these scales and pockets well but man I don’t sound nearly that smooth, and I’m not sure why?
Thanks, it is extremely useful. I suppose that in these pockets bending G A and D should always sound okay?
Hi David, great lesson !! (as usual) I'm sure you've mentioned it before but what is your signal path. I really like your tone. Great sustain and it sounds like a bunch of mids too. THANKS

What do you recommend for beginner teas up to this ?
Thanks
What scales did BB king mostly use?
That last jam is the intro to Monkey Man, kind of?
E🎸👑

balls, pockets, pool, playing guitar with yourself, there is probably a slew of bad jokes in all of that somewhere
Pentatonic?? I prefer gin n' tonic myself
Sweet a$$ intro...
i’ve only been playing for a year at 16 and im kind a loser. Thats all I have to say thanks man.
I started at 16
im gonna be the next Jimi Hendrix I swear
Just know that you stand on the shoulders of giant losers
