Wow! What an extreme comment! If you're this hard on me, I assume you're even harder on yourself. Mind if I tell you a few helpful things? It might help you have more realistic expectations of yourself and other people. 1. Making music is about making progress. I'm not here to show off, I'm here to help people make progress. I never claimed to be the best guitar player in the world. This video isn't supposed to be about how good (or not good) I am at soloing. It's about helping people make progress on their own solos. 2. I absolutely could have played better solos, but I improvised each one. And my focus was about executing the concepts, not about playing perfect solos, so I spent more time on the concepts and scripts. 3. As a creator (and a musician) its important to recognize that in a perfect world, I should be able to write the most perfect music and create the most perfect lessons I possibly can. But the reality is that I also have to pay my bills, I have to eat food, I have to maintain relationships with friends and family, and I might not always be in the best mood or in the clearest state of mind. If you wait for your situation to be perfect before you produce anything, you'll never produce anything. You just gotta get stuff out there and try to do better next time.
Pay him no heed. Anybody that spends their time criticizing people on the internet obviously have much bigger problems. You specifically stated in the video that you were concentrating on 5(of many more) levels of soloing. I’m sure you could do a video lesson on bends, vibrato, arpeggios legatos Mr Robotos and all the other words that I don’t know yet but for those of us who are truly trying to improve their guitar playing skills and get to the next level this video is perfect because it doesn’t Iola too much at once. Why would I want to practice bends and vibratos if I haven’t learned the basic theory behind soloing? If that guy wants a video on bends and vibrato all he has to do is type in lesson on bends and vibrato 🤯 after that he should apply a NASA to be a rocket surgeon.
@user-lj6bt5se1i, let's assume that what you say were true for a sec, He still would be an excellent instructor and has a very high tech and innovative method to clarify abstract concepts. This is only possible if you're extremely talented and have a good functionning brain. All of which commands respect. You don't know how to respect that is a fact. You on the other hand are a very unhappy person to be able to be this bitter. This is another fact. We enjoy and love SPJ as an artist and as an instructor. I've learned tons from him and am not done. that's the last fact. That said, I'm sure you make very good bends and even better vibratos, or maybe not. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The way you explain things is so perfect for people just starting out with theory. Calling a pentatonic scale the "skeleton" of a major scale... you really have a mind for explaining concepts, and as someone who works in developing training programs across different industries, anytime you're looking for a career in education, it's waiting for you :).
No idea if you will see this mate but I had to leave a comment. I've been playing for a few years and have wanted to learn how to improvise/solo for a long time. I'm not exaggerating when I say I have watched 100s of videos, bought countless books and paid for several online courses. Yet I'm always left feeling frustrated that nothing is sinking in. I stumbled across this video and your way of teaching caught my attention. The visuals you used in this video alone really connected with my way of learning. As soon as the video ended I joined your patreon and I've started my journey along your guitar theory course. I'm only a couple of hours in but I can honestly say that this is the first time I am getting to grips with the scales and understanding the reason why they work and how to use them. Your teaching method is great and your visuals and practice routines are just perfect for someone who is more of a visual learner like myself. I highly recommend your patreon to anyone who is in the same position as me. I'm finally enjoying learning again! Thankyou for your lessons and I look forward to continuing my guitar journey with your guidance!

I have had countless instructors. None of them ever taught me any of this. I think one taught me the major scale but never taught me anything about the 1, the 3 or the 5th note. No. It was always pentatonic minor, first box "let's jam" at the end of the lesson. This is a really good channel. I can't wait to get going on this.
I have played piano and keyboards for as long as I can remember getting to grade 8. In moving to guitar a few years back I found the guitar teachers were more about “secrets” and “hacks” learning licks and songs rather than learning the guitar. I had really good teachers growing up. Using a lot of Solfège explinations. However I've never got passed noodling around scales. Even tho I knew them all, the cage system, the modes and chromatic scales. I never quite got how to use them properly in dynamic situations. I will be sure to study this diligently, thank you for your service 🙏

This approach is really a fundamentally sound method for learning beyond the pentatonic and major scales. These steps lay the groundwork for more advanced modes, and help target intervals in a scale. For example that chromatic movement is really helping to set the stage for diminished scales later on as well as helping to see how more color can be added into a key. Chromaticism really is the entry level for things like harmonic and melodic minor, and the many modes that can be extracted from it. It’s at that point you realize it’s all relative.
I always come back here to watch your videos and I noticed most are gone and you haven't been here for awhile. I truly hope everything is ok with you. Your a good person!!!
Your videos are so unbelievably helpful, it's astonishing to me how you can make any topic so easy to understand, and in such a practical way. Thank you.
The animation is absolutely astonishing. Would love to see you go through solos with the same idea and breaking it down, would be extremely informative. Thank you for the quality content!
Once you combine this complexity with modal mixing and modulations it almost seems music is an infinite universe yet some of the greatest and most beautiful music can come from just 2 chords like Eleanor Rigby. Music is mind-boggling:) Great video and well laid out.
I really really really love the way you explain your lessons, it is soooo clear. I have been looking for so many years for a teacher like you to come along and I can't believe I found you. I also love the way you use the fret board and diagrams to illustrate your teaching. I will sign up to your online lessons for sure. Thank you so much and God bless!
Absolutely amazing video. I have never understood how to move around when soloing this clearly before. Your new color-coded moving covid looking thing is amazing. Maybe now I will be able to stop noodling and actually connect my tones together to make beautiful sounds. How do you not have 1M or more followers?

the second solo is great too! you have a very nuanced touch, i have played for decades and watch guitar videos all day, you have great taste and a unique voice on the instrument!
so excited to see you back you are the one that got me soloing for the first time. someday ill be a world famous guitarist and you wont even know its all thanks to you
Awesome, love your videos! They're a treasure trove for an amatuer self taught guitarist. Watching your vids has vastly improved my solo's and improv. Thank you so much!
You Never cease to amaze me with the video tutorials you put out. I am finally going to get some time to sit down and start learning. I definitely need to join your patreon membership. Thank you for all that you do! Very much appreciated!!!!
You should make a video of different riffs to use for soloing. Such as double stop riffs utilizing intervals like what mateus asato hendrix and mayer play. Great video!
thanks for the lesson. I've memorized a lot of scales but I'm still confused about how to use them, thanks to you, now I'm starting to understand. Yes of course just understanding it is still not enough, I still have to practice a lot to use it lol...
Your three tips for soloing over changes was an eye-opener for me! I never considered that in leaping from one note to the next that it should be a chord tone, makes sense though! I'll keep these, and all your great tips from this video, in mind when I practice next! Thank you. :)
Keep uploading new videos sir! You're 1 of the good guitar teacher here in UA-cam. I always learn new lessons every time I watch your video. Keep it up.
WELCOME BACK SIR! I watched ur video 3 years ago and I can say that i've improved throughout these years upon stumbling to ur video. Greetings from Philipines 🇵🇭
Bro you are the best teacher A simple minded person can play guitar and can become very good at copying other great guitar players But a very intelligent person not only can become a great guitarist but they would make their own sound and they can teach anyone how to play and be so simple I used to watch Marty when i first started but i look back to the stuff i used to learn from him and i can see how much junk and he was teaching and he needed to learn himself Most of his early lesson has been taken of by him i bet You are always teach correctly since day one Thank you
This video is and was and will continue to be extraordinarily helpful. I've watched an incredible amount of UA-cam videos on this topic and this outshines them all. Methodical and step-by-step. New Sub well, well deserved! 😎🎸🤘
this is great SPJ! I always think a master of a field is one who can explain complex concepts in a simple way. you have an unmatched skill for taking something that is 'mystified' for beginners (like 7th and 9ths) and explaining it in a way that can be understood perfectly. the system of layering existing knowledge before gradually introducing new concepts, in this video and others, is a fantastic way to teach. keep it up! you are creating more guitarists in the world every day. :)
It's taking it to the next level and justifying the reasons or the underlying structure with the help of visuals which is unmatched. Extremely valuable content. Thanks!
dang your video about the using the caged system opened my eyes to the music theory. it's fascinating. it's like millions of brains opened for me, ready to scour for more knowledge
Thanks Scott! Your tuts are awesome, I regret not finding you few years back when i'm a student and have lot of time to invest in music. Will go slow n steady!

Your videos are so unbelievably helpful, it's astonishing to me how you can make any topic so easy to understand, and in such a practical way. Thank you.
Thank you so much
you’re back!!! 🤩
This is where I’m at and my interest lies in my current progress on guitar. Glad to see a new vid from ya
I love the diagram circle for the notes, makes so much more sense. Tha ks for this great video
Awesome! That’s my favorite update as well. Helps with getting the concept on any instrument
What a beautiful video. So much effort put into this. Good job my man!
It was the most effort I've ever put into a video! Thanks for appreciating it!
Good to see you back mate. You and Ricky Comisky are the top two teachers on YT right now.
The level of intricate detail in that video just baffles me, also, knowing that this is "only" the beginning of what is possible
Thank you for this.
This is hands down one of the best lessons on how to solo. Keep up Scott!
Thank you. It means a lot
Wow this is the best soloing lesson I've ever seen.
Amen
Love your teaching style, so easy to listen to your voice-
You ate a natural born teacher!!! and easy to follow!!
Yikes, I am impressed!!
Good to see the master again👍👏
Woah ! the production value and the pedagogy are off the chart ! what a great work you provide ! thank you very much !!!
Thank you so much
Absolutely amazing video. I have never understood how to move around when soloing this clearly before. Your new color-coded moving covid looking thing is amazing. Maybe now I will be able to stop noodling and actually connect my tones together to make beautiful sounds. How do you not have 1M or more followers?
always great vids, we appreciate it.
Your content is amazing, wtf. A video and a website ? Im impressed truly.

Hey, Scott, I have been learning a lot from your tutorials and sometimes I forget that I have to use index and pinky to know minor and major. Your way of teaching is very good and precise. Thank you sir. At 72 I have made lots of progress
Cheers
the second solo is great too! you have a very nuanced touch, i have played for decades and watch guitar videos all day, you have great taste and a unique voice on the instrument!
so excited to see you back you are the one that got me soloing for the first time. someday ill be a world famous guitarist and you wont even know its all thanks to you
Scott, you're a blessing to the world. ❤❤ So much of love and respect for you.
Good to see you finally back!
Awesome, love your videos! They're a treasure trove for an amatuer self taught guitarist. Watching your vids has vastly improved my solo's and improv. Thank you so much!
Awesome! Happy to hear that!
Please come up with more & more videos....
They are so amazing and useful...
Thanks for all the stuff.
brother I just found your channel and I'm having a great time going through your videos thank you so much for what you do
You Never cease to amaze me with the video tutorials you put out.
I am finally going to get some time to sit down and start learning.
I definitely need to join your patreon membership. Thank you for all that you do! Very much appreciated!!!!
Just randomly ran up into your channel, and this is simply one of the best guitar lesson I've found on UA-cam. Thank you!!
Best teacher on UA-cam 🎼🎸🔊
man come back to youtube we miss you, you are the best at explaining these things
I appreciate the love! Come hang out with me on my online school, I post new content regularly there.
You should make a video of different riffs to use for soloing. Such as double stop riffs utilizing intervals like what mateus asato hendrix and mayer play. Great video!
You are the best teacher i´ve found on youtube omg thank you im going to cry fr😭😭
So happy to hear that I've helped so dramatically!
Your videos have got to be a pain to edit, but I assure you it's worth it. Thanks for all the excellent quality lessons!
Thanks for hanging on!
thanks for the lesson.
Thank you. :)
Awesome! Happy to hear that
Keep uploading new videos sir! You're 1 of the good guitar teacher here in UA-cam. I always learn new lessons every time I watch your video. Keep it up.
Thanks for your videos. I’m learning so much with them!
I'm glad I stayed subscribed! Well done
Thanks for sticking around!
Truly one of the very best guitar instructors out there. Thank you, SPJ!
I am serious: you are a tremendously talented instructor.
WELCOME BACK SIR! I watched ur video 3 years ago and I can say that i've improved throughout these years upon stumbling to ur video. Greetings from Philipines 🇵🇭
Glad you are back!!!
Bro you are the best teacher
A simple minded person can play guitar and can become very good at copying other great guitar players
But a very intelligent person not only can become a great guitarist but they would make their own sound and they can teach anyone how to play and be so simple
I used to watch Marty when i first started but i look back to the stuff i used to learn from him and i can see how much junk and he was teaching and he needed to learn himself
Most of his early lesson has been taken of by him i bet
You are always teach correctly since day one
Thank you
This video is and was and will continue to be extraordinarily helpful. I've watched an incredible amount of UA-cam videos on this topic and this outshines them all. Methodical and step-by-step. New Sub well, well deserved! 😎🎸🤘
Wow, thank you!
Thank you for your Videos! For me, the best Theory Videos on UA-cam. 🎉
I've learned so much. You're awesome!
Thank you!
@@ScottPaulJohnson you’re welcome
It must be so cool to be the dude who made it all come together for us grabbing in the darkness of scaterweb learners! You are the man!!
this is great SPJ!
It's been years since I search for this video. Thank you so much!
Nice job Scott. Loved the lesson.
Your content is so good. And your production quality is fantastic. Thanks man.
Thanks Scott! Your tuts are awesome, I regret not finding you few years back when i'm a student and have lot of time to invest in music. Will go slow n steady!
Awesome lecture. Thank you so much. This video explaining things I never truly understood
Thank you so much my best guitar teacher. I love you.
