The thing I love about your lessons is that you present them so calmly, slowly & clearly that it makes it seem to the student more possible to actually accomplish. Thanks for that. Great stuff.
Dude, I’m in my 50’s now. Have played guitar for decades. And you just gave a lesson and demonstration in a way that I wish I had access to decades ago. Thrilled to have found your channel. Sharing your channel with everyone I know. Wishing you continued growth and success. 🤘😎👍
Your calm while being super enthusiastic style has made this my new favorite Channel. While some of the concepts are ahead of my ability, I always learn something new I can use. You really make it fun and I always feel super motivated to play after I watch your videos. I would kill to have a teacher in my area with your ability. Thanks so much for making it fun!
Such an easy going humble dude. Today I end the mindless scrolling on YT and get my shit together. Have been playing for over 40 years and in a slump for the past 10 or more. This channel is among 20 or 30 I watch and go wow, but just keep on scrolling around like a dumb ass. No one I've watched provides more value, clearer instruction, and the feeling you're just kicking back with your buddy and he wants nothing more than to help you play better. Absolutely friggin priceless.
I have a learning disability , butl have been trying to learn how to play for like 10 yrs , your lessons are some of the best ive seen , you have a great teaching style thats so entertaining , l can at least live vicariously through your video's , loved the one on Randy Rhoads , please keep up the great work , its very inspiring !
As David says you can do this or you can do this and then just add this displaying it as it looks so easy and so calmly speaking as if no effort is needed. Then I run to pick up my guitar to do these awesome sounds and clunk clunk click click screech pop pop and back to the remote I go as that I can play much smoother. David as always, so smooth when you play. Very nice and a great lesson.
Thank you so much for this one, David. I've been looking for licks like this for years. Somehow it was only meant to be now. You are a brilliant guitar teacher. I wish we'd met 30 or at least 20 years ago. God bless.
man I can't say it enough but Brewster you are the coolest guitar teacher . I have sparked a new interest in practice and I am so inspired by late night lessons. thanks David. pentatonic is the soul of rock it is just as important as the major scale imo. whoever discovered pentatonic found the sweetest sound in the world it's amazing what it can do.
Really value your knowledge of chords, and how/where to sue them ,not just showing chords ,and nowhere to place them, the different colours and voicings ,really catch my ear, excellent stfff.
Thank you so much! : ) I like learning music correctly, but then I also like taking those ideas in the music and mixing them around to see what I can come up with. It's a fun way to learn and makes some of the hard stuff easier to tackle and usually makes it more fun too! Thanks again and take care!
Thanks again so much! I agree. Sometimes it's good to "go back" a few steps and then push forward even further. It might sound odd, but I've made some real progress moving forward by going backward and reviewing things that I felt/thought I already knew. Sometimes you'll pick up something new/extra just by reviewing something you've already learned and it also strengthens your knowledge too. : )
Hey man - I just wanted to say that I dig your channel and thanks for sharing your time and knowledge. Didn't you do a Prince one after he passed? I cannot find it... maybe I am mistaken. Regardless, as a gigging musician who likes guitar nerd youtube channels, yours is always positive, informative, and useful and I thank you for these videos. ~j in UT
Dear David, Your lessons are priceless for guitarists. I am going to show my age here, when I was learning , there were only magazines and VHS tapes ($$$$) for a kid and using the old turntable. I love your videos. I was recently asked to jam with a friend and I am a little apprehensive as I can get through a songs rhythm structure, but when it comes to tackling the solos for my favorite songs, I crash and burn. I wonder what your advice is for a 52 year old that wants to be a rock star before its too late? If you can advise somebody such as myself on techniques required to succeed. Thank you.
Thanks Timothy! I would suggest starting with learning all five positions of the pentatonic scale and you could use the Scales & Tales series of lessons on this channel to help you get started! Thanks again and take care! Good luck!
Same here, I remember getting a bit frustrated with Paul Gilbert's first VHS tape as only now I realize that I don't naturally use my right hand like him. I have to do it another way(which I now know is totally acceptable) but thought I was a failure as I couldn't outside pick as fast as him...it was much more difficult back then generally, with far less materials in my country. And I used a turntable at 16 rpm, trying to work stuff out,...then changing the key back...a lengthy process! Plus I also didn't realize how incorrect TAB could potentially be!! I stopped playing years ago, around 1990, but recently picked up a guitar again and getting back into learning again in 2017. I wish UA-cam was around when I was a teenager Best wishes from John in England, age 54👍
misterjohn john You’re so right about tabs! I’ve bought some shocking books in my time... gave up eventually! Trusting your ears is way more beneficial.
misterjohn john Yeah, owning a kit seemed like an impossibility. Wanted to do that before the guitar occurred to me, but a knackered acoustic with a bowed neck and an action of about 15mm at the twelfth fret, was the first opportunity to present itself. Still constantly tapping out rhythms much to the annoyance of everyone around me.
Hey Dave! Love this lesson. Thank you. Do you have any daily excercises that you rely on for right hand picking alternate picking? And, well left hand as well.
Cracking lesson again David - thank you - I can imagine some of these could find themselves in your forthcoming Shape -Shifting book ? Excellent ideas though on how to refresh a good ole favourite scale. Nice one.
Yeah!😀🎸👏👏👏🎵👍 Love the first pentatonic skip 1 2 ~ 5 1, 4 5 ~ 3 4, 2 3 ~ 1 2, 5 1~4 5 --1 So glad I happened to find you, and this is only the first video I've dissected. Sooo much to learn, as ever, and I love your presentation style. Thank you David, respect from England 🐕💚🎵🎸
Great stuff! I’ve been playing all five pentatonic scales up and down the neck for 35 years now and always trying to connect them in unique ways. Trying to add the major scale notes and blue notes to come up with some shreddable 3 note/string ideas but something always seems to be missing. Recently learned harmonic minor to add some exotic flavor which helps a bit but I’m really excited to try these ideas you’ve presented! Can you recommend any scales to try to sound more metal? I’m amazed that Zakk Wylde primarily sticks to pentatonic from what I’ve heard! Thanks for the awesome content! Darren
hi david, I enjoy your content, do you have videos that focus on the essential rock/blues licks like that alt picking GBE(strings) lick that is heard in freebird, thank you!
Thanks that was soo kool !! Could you do a video on Eric Johnson's cascading penatonic sequences?? Please oh and loved your Zappa video could you do more examples of the scales he likes to use ?? Thanks soo much love your channel
GREAT Video Lesson !! Absolutely Love your teaching Style and that Third Lick made me SUBSCRIBE !! Hope you're doing well . Considering how long ago you Posted this Video I doubt you'll ever see my Comments here . But I Love what you're doing !! 🎸🎸
Eh David, This was one of my favorite 3 for all. **** I’ve been occasionally practicing sweeping 2 note per string pentatonics..... Yes, not 3 note per string pentatonics but the common 2 note versions we all learn. Descending down the common 2 string pentatonics as triplets , the picking for “E,B,and G Strings would be .... Down, Up, Up, ....Up, Up, Down .... repeat starting on next set of strings “D, A, and low E” *** The ascending version which is slightly harder is the exact opposite for picking ... instead you do Up, Down, Down, .... Down, Down, Up.. You can think of them as two sets of triplets on three string groups at a time .... hopefully I explained this well via text? Lots of Fun! .... Almost as cool as a polka! Lol! 😉👍👍👍
The thing I love about your lessons is that you present them so calmly, slowly & clearly that it makes it seem to the student more possible to actually accomplish. Thanks for that. Great stuff.
When UA-cam's algorithm gets it right.
Glad this showed up in my reccomend.
Great channel subscribed.

You play so fluidly. You’ve inspired me to pick my guitar up and approach it differently than before. Thanks, David!
I just keep finding myself saving you videos to my favorites list !!! Great lesson !!

Great exercises. I'm gonna send your channel to my students. Some good ideas to practice.
