Pete, a real good way to set anyone up with ideas, and making them think about what they really want out of life, and how to think outside of the box to get it. My Dad and I had many discussions about what he thought I should do, and his approach on life was different, as our country has changed so much with innovation. He worked at the same business for almost 45 years, until his retirement in 1995. He believed that if you did a good job every day, the company would take care of you, but with the way the economy works today, that is no longer the case. The dod eat dog, buy up your competitors, and with that, get rid of the most expensive part of the business which is labor, you see why things have changed. Even the company my Dad worked for, had 750 employees at his factory, and now has about 175, running 3 shifts 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. At one point it almost closed as the economy was bad in 2008, and only a skeleton crew of 75 were working there. I am now 68 years old, and you gave great advice. Thanks for a great video. No matter what the content is, I always enjoy it.😊

I agree. I've thought about it and I don't believe it's just happenstance that Pete found his way to UA-cam. He would be the first to point out that he's not perfect, but he is genuine and I suspect he is the same off-camera as he is on his posts. If the government stayed out of your business say you could make more money? You hit the nail right on it's head. Saved our lifetime to retire at 50 years old. We did it, didn't inherited one penny. EVERY thing is paid for including beautiful house. Over a million in retirement savings, 88k a year in pentions every year. First 5 years we never touched our nest egg at all. Mann that's a great feeling Pete. Your wife and mind have to be on the same page. Your wife is a big asset. Your oldest always running from the camera. All your equipment is your assets you'll leave this world including your bright kids. You rock Pete. I don't care what the government does, just not crush our country. At 17 years old I joined the Marines and don't regret one second. Keep up the great work. Make this world a better place. The very best machine i ever had is the one i just bought for moving in tight spaces to clean and feed is a Toro Dingo 222 with a bucket on it. I paid $7500 for it used and it has a 22hp Kohler commander engine and i move dirt to planting areas, clean stalls and feed animals also with it. It turns in a 59 inch radius. That singular piece of equipment has kept me from modifying my out buildings.

I'm almost 80 now, Pete, and I agree with your view of "planning the future." The phrase is misleading because "plans" often fail to match reality. The key is flexibility and willingness to change as we change and as conditions change. You are doing your children a big favor in helping them to prepare for their own reality, whatever that may be. Pete, there is a man and his family that have done the farmer's market in a town near me for years and years. That man, when I last saw him, was celebrating his 97th birthday at the market. His great great grandkids were helping PopPop out that day, but he still kept getting up from his stool to go to the trailer to pull out watermelons and muskmelons. He was such a delightful man, always great for a story and definitely someone that everyone looked for when they came to the market. Just thought I would relay that to you today, to let you know that you could forever be a part of the market, or as long as your health holds out.

Finally worked some of my time in to watch this clip. Nice day on the farm. Words of wisdom always. Having been raised in a military family, my goal was to join. I left home at 17 to a new career. I did 21 years, never regret a day of it....well almost. I have come to a lot of forks on my road during my life so far. In the end, i found that putting my nose to the grindstone, life works out. The biggest fork I took was immigrating to the United States from Canada, and getting married. This year we will celebrating 19 years. Not bad for an Internet couple. Right now, I am concentrating on battling stage 4 cancer for the second time in my life. I have faith that I will beat this also. You video of " I almost died ", was an inspiration. Thank you! Snowing hard here, the wet stuff, so it will be a great night to hunker down...Chili maybe...you bet....Later Pete & family.

Totally understand when you get older about climbing on roofs. I used to climb on roofs like a goat just didn't have any fear felt so steady and had no worry at all. Now I go up on a 10-foot ladder and I just don't find myself as steady. I think some of it is balance I get little unbalanced sometimes a touch of vertigo if I move my head quickly my eyes focus changes quickly while up on something. The stories of people you know who fell off ladders like a co-worker of mine who fell off a ladder hanging Christmas lights broke his back vertebra was in a body cast. One thing helping me is daily exercise weight training gotten my legs much stronger. I don't feel as unsteady anymore.

Today I was watching a video of your farm in which the old horse trailer was backed up to the open end where pigs were to get used to the trailer for eating, and while I was enjoying it so much, I lost it all. Then I just could not find that same video at all. I just tried and tried. I had to reprogram my generic remote a few times. I finally had to give up. But I love the layers, the broilers, and the turkeys the best. i enjoy the Dexters but was enjoying that pig video. Maybe it will pop into my lineup again. ty for your videos.

Along with education, self confidence, motivation I think it is very important that teenagers date and have the self esteem to break with unsuitable partners because one's kids spouses can make or break them. I am 69, I have a 46 acre farm where I live in Ireland my wife and I are retired , have over the industrial wage each. We have a house in Spain and a boat in Belgium on the waterways of Europe, money is not a problem. 2 children are teachers, a veterinary and an structural engineer. We paid all college and helped them with their buying their homes. We cannot go away but are full time child minders and maintence person. This is due to divorce and we just cannot abandon our grand children. I don't know what I would differently. Your sucessor farmer will be run part time I guess. We use slats here for both cattle and pigs. Big bale silage haylage is more nutritious, can be cut leafier,is slightly less weather dependent. We recycle the plastic. You could serve the sows with a.i. and do away with the boars. It might not suit utube content. Sadly a farm is finished if it is split. Thank you for years of watching.

This must be one of the very few actually reasonable takes on "how to raise kids".
Let the kids decide if they want to take over the family business by themselves. They have witnessed it all the way while growing up, so they have a good idea on what is required to take over. So if they decide to not want to take it over, that's something the parents should respect and you clearly are doing that. And that's something I highly respect. Great video again. Best wishes from Japan.

The barn back behind you with the tall door would make a good tractor shop maybe with a little concrete. I don't blame you ,I'm 47 and I can't climb up on top of those things anymore . We all love your channel. And whatever you do is fine with us. Maybe in your golden years you can videos where you tell us dad jokes? LoL

Hi Pete, I have been watching your channel for about a year now and I enjoy all of it. Aside from learning what goes into farming, you are very articulate with your words and how you present your wisdom. I love these videos and I hope we get more like these in the future!
