When I was in my teens, we pastured about 100 sheep on our ranch in northern Calif. Twice our flock was dessimated by neighbor's pet dogs. They sustained wounds so horrible, most had to be euthanized. It makes me happy to see your flock so lovingly and safely cared for in a roomy brightly lit barn. Kudos to responsible owners/breeders like you, Sandi.

Im from an European country where sheep even in theese modern day herd by shepherds and dogs. Even if more and more electric fence is built you still see the old ways. And I didnt have, not a single question about why your sheep inside. What I see: cleanness. Safety. And the benefits of the modern technology.

You have a great setup and the Cleanest pens. People who don't live there don't understand what it's like raising animals in your area. Your Lamb operation is Tops. You care so much about your Sheep. I personally like sheep on grass but I totally understand why you keep them inside. I truly think your sheep are very happy and you do a great job looking after their every need. Keep up the good work.
Same! That's why I watch this channel :-). And I know, as she said, there is a whole set of knowledge attached to every way of doing things, a whole set of equipment needed, a whole set of pros and cons. Sheep farmers around here as far as I know lamb in the spring and send the sheep up in the mountains to graze in the summer. So there might be less work with the sheep in the summer, but also risk of them getting in trouble, sick, injured or killed. And a lot of time and energy spent walking around looking after them, and gathering them in the fall.

Your sheep ARE outside.....they just have the benefit of a roof to keep the rain and sun off their backs. The entire sides of your barn are completely open whenever possible...so they have abundant fresh air AND you provide fans to move that air around even more. Maybe if you colored the hay they bed in "green" so that it looks like grass....the 'outsiders' would feel better about it. BTW....nothing more satisfying than a freshly cleaned and ordered barn ! I love watching that happen ! Nice job Sandi ! Your run a good operation !

Anyone that thinks livestock should be outside or want to be outside in all weather, has little or no experience. Every sheep or cow looks for shelter when it's too hot, wet, cold or dangerous. Dairy cows will walk miles to escape cold rain, if they can reach a nice dry barn. These open sided barns allow the farmer to provide the best of both worlds. For just the freedom from internal parasites alone it's well worth the effort. Plus, this is primarily a crop farm, on very fertile and expensive land. Sacrificing that reliable income for pasture makes little sense. Add in the wild swings of a Canadian climate. Add in coyotes and the added expense of stressed sheep and loses...

All I see is the dirt on the door and want to take a rag to it and wipe the crud off. I realize it's a barn and all but you just get use to if you see dirt on a door jamb you automatically wipe it off......
My dog and I love to watch Kinsey. He is a shepherd /lab mix that is a rescue and LOVES to run! Every time he hears your voice (or the birds) he knows it’s time to watch Sandi farm life and Kinsey run! ❤️

I agree with you 100% about not letting your sheep graze outside due to coyotes and other wildlife...! One can sleep better knowing they are protected ! Can't wait for all the new babies to arrive 🙌 💕
Getting fancy with all the different camera angles for the clean out 😉 I think that’s the best you’ve explained why you keep your sheep in barn. People who don’t have livestock just don’t understand the amount of work that goes into keeping a pasture productive for your animals. We spend countless hours on fencing, on maintaining the pasture grasses so they can support the livestock we have etc. I want to start rotating my cows into another area we have but we are currently working on getting proper fencing up because we don’t have it and it’s a big task. I also want to be able to rotate goats into one of my other areas and we have to fortify the fencing beyond just the cattle panels we have. It’s a lot of work. I spent the entire morning out there working on the pasture grass dealing with a major weed break out to keep the grass as healthy as possible to support our animals.
Bonus, while riding around my pasture this morning I came across a huge wild blackberry bush and was able to treat myself to a handful of delicious blackberries!
Happy, safe, well cared for sheep and lambs. That's what's important. Yes it looks lovely to see lambs running around in the grass but DOES NOT look nice when they become predator-feed. You do a good job of keeping them safe and healthy and happy. :)
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Ok, I thoroughly enjoy EVERY video you post, but this one had a different calming energy to it. You set goals and you achieved them, that is how you succeed. You run your farm the best way for your sheep, and you do an amazing job of it. By far my favorite sheep farmer !! I love watching videos of you cleaning out the barn, unsure why, but it's something that just makes my heart happy. Perhaps it's the fresh straw for the sheep, imagining how excited they must be when they first step on that clean bedding for the first time again, like steeping on the sand of a gorgeous beach. Just pure perfection.

You love your sheep 🐑 . You protect them from elements, and animals that could attack them. You give them everything they need. You give them food they can eat all day long and water supply that have heat electric that doesn’t freeze. And that people need to know you care about them from day they born to end of there growth.

I completely understand why you keep your sheep indoors Sandi. We have a horrendous amount of stock loss each year around here in Alberta due to coyote predation, (some years are worse than others), and if I could keep our stock indoors, I would. Your sheep are incredibly happy and healthy, but I don’t think most people realize the dangers they’d face outdoors - from predators to parasites. You’re NOT going to please everyone. No matter what. So just keep doing what works for you and we’ll keep on enjoying your videos.

Looks like you might want to take 5-10 minutes to clean the windshield on your tele handler!!! Lol. I LOVED that you showed us your view from inside the tele handler!! I think I'd be very scared to run it. I'd end up breaking a whole bunch of things!! Lol.

You can be sure the rams know the routine. And of all the rams the Suffolk’s are the most dominate. If they were really hungry they would use their superior size and weight and strongly force themselves into the feeding fray.

It looked like a few figured it out and ran down to the other end where it wasn’t crowded. I thought the as you did when she put down the piece that directs the food into the trough and nothing came out until the 4th sheep’s spot. At least the stupid ones got food when she made the second pass. 🐏🐑

I have fallen in love with another animal on your farm-the Bobcat!! I have seen it a number of times, but this time I really saw how versatile it is. If only we had such an item, back in the dark ages, on our farm my childhood would not have been spent behind a wheelbarrow!! 😁👍🏼❤️🐑🐏 🚜

I am not a sheep farmer. I just happened across your channel. From the outside looking in... I love your channel! I watch every day. I now need a lamb fix. Every day. I watch puppy channels - only uplifting ones- so I can smile and increase my joy for the day. Now your channel also brings me joy. I love the births, the weening the lambs talking to their mothers, the stealers,....those are so funny! The boys chasing 'tail' lol. Thank you for doing this. I love watching your hard work. It reminds me of my childhood and the work from sun rise to sunset. As the times of work in the dark... and just because it had to be done. One goes and do it. Work is such a blessing for man. I’ve been watching your videos for over a year and I think you raise sheep sustainably, ethically and honestly. It’s a great system which I think should be utilised more, worldwide.

A farmer's fantasy
The one thing that may interest others here is pastures have be cleaned too, some times replanted. Yes waste will break down but too much of it and you get parasites galore. Also because sheep's hooves are like little jackhammer's they can destroy their pasture. We replant about every 2 to 3 years.
We got the 2 new rams yesterday, both Romney's but different blood lines. They are in quarantine for 60 days, before we will turn them in with the wethers.
Yes, but they are out in the sunshine as God intended, not constantly walking and breathing in a foot of their own waste. That cannot be healthy in a closed environment. The ammonia alone from their pee has got to be overwhelming even with the bedding. They have no room in the barn to do what comes naturally to sheep. I see both sides to it and the pros and cons of both but personally like them being out in a pasture and brought in at night for safety.
@@Jomama02 Then get a farm and do it your way. Sandy's farm, Sandy's sheep, Sandy' way. Get it? Keeping animals on pasture isn't just cutting them loose and getting dogs to watch them. Sandy has had enough with these arguments. Move on. If you don't like this way of doing things, guess what? You don't have to stay and watch. Forget about what God intended, I'm pretty sure nothing has gone according to plan, and embrace the ways we, actual people, choose to do things within our means.
Jomama 02 I couldn’t agree more, but that seems to make me a hater. Of course you need enough pasture to rotate grazing, add some cattle and you get two species that will hoover up each other’s worms. It is such a delight to see the ewes and lambs enjoying a proper sheep’s life. In the UK we also get predators, some on two legs, uncontrolled dogs and big cats released by the irresponsible, but intensification also causes mortality. My sheep never caused pasture degradation, in fact they are good farmers. Also having a wise farm dog helps the job along.
Jomama 02 They are not breathing in ammonia. The barn has good ventilation and is open most of them time. Sandi keeps the windows and garage open while she is there and they are not packed like sardines in to their pens. They have plenty of space. Sandi keeps them clean. Yes it maybe more “natural” for them to be outside but if Sandi doesn’t feel confident or comfortable doing it then it’s her decision. Like she said the same people who say “sheep belong outside” would say “how dare you let your lambs be eaten or attacked by predators” in the end Sandi knows what she is doing!
@@pipitameruje EXACTLY!!!! There is equally if not more work to pastured animals. Every 4 to 6 weeks, we have to move the entire flock of ewes to fresh pasture, what that means at least for us, blocking every driveway from current pasture to new pasture, notifying every farm in between 24 to 48 hours prior. Moving every trough and the cradles they sit in, getting water started in new pasture. Moving every dog house for the guardian dogs along with their food and water dishes. Checking every fence on new pasture for any tears, rips that they could possibly get out of. Getting the flock on the road with guardian dogs out front the lead ewe out front to follow the guardian dogs. The sheep out on road that will follow her. Behind all of flock, us on four wheelers or horse back, with herding dogs. The herding dogs can't get in front of guardian dogs otherwise there huge fight between the big ones and the little ones. Every day, going to new pasture with grains and pellets, check their water, count the flock to make sure every girl is there. And this is just the ewes, same procedure for the wethers and rams. So there is heck of alot of work either way.

Back in the 1960's my brother and I didn't have a bobcat. And even if there was a bobcat, I'm 100% sure granddad whould have said diesel fuel is too expensive to waste on stall cleaning.. We cleaned our grandfather's horse barn with wheelbarow and manure forks. Undoubtley part of the reason neither of us went into farming.

In addition to the main reasons Sandi has spoken about regarding housing of the sheep the bitter cold and snow load during the winter would make it extremely difficult to have the sheep outside and manage and feed them. The sheep would need housing over winter. As for summer the entire acreage is used to supply silage, haulage, grain and hay for the sheep plus grain for sale. There is an additional leased block as well. So in summary there is no space for summer grazing. More value comes from the grain crops than would be gained from summer grazing of sheep.

While I totally agree with you about pasturing sheep you have a lot of misconceptions about what is "required". I literally have sheep, portable fencing, mineral feeder, waterer and that's it. Your system clearly works for you and the rest of the farm operation and that's the most important. I may have a totally different system than you, but still learn tons of useful information. Keep doing what best for you and thank you for sharing your experiences!

Yes I follow other with outside sheep. Just wonder how many you have with portable pasture grazing (rotation).

Nobody makes a stink over cats or dogs who stay indoors their whole lives, who don't free-roam around a large yard or even a neighborhood...but lord-forbid a livestock animal spend its life inside, and everyone loses their minds!!

No animal should be kept locked up anywhere without sunshine even if it's in the house. I have 3 cats and they can come in and out as they please and they stay in our yard and do not wander off unless they go for a walk with us to the corner. They lay in the sunshine on the porch most of the time.
Cats can decimate the minimal wildlife in a neighborhood if allowed to roam.

99.9% of the time when you need to check your sheep at night you can do it with lots of light. They are out of the rain and snow. I think more lambs survive in your barn than would if there were out doors in a snow storm. You do a marvelous job raising these wonderful creatures. Thank you for sharing.
We know about the barn dramas from late last year snd the trouble with water in the barn. While I knew lots of extra straw was used to provide comfort this cleaning session really emphasised just how much extra straw had been added to the pack. Now wonder straw stocks are light this year!
"There is a science to pasture raised lamb and sheep" is such a true statement but the general public isn't really aware of this.
Here are several cons of keeping your animals on pasture:
- you need good fences all around, especially with sheep you have to keep wolves at bay and that can be really expensive
- out on pasture the animals are at a higher risk of endoparasites
- outside the risk of injury is much higher. Sometimes that's due to fights, sometimes due to other stuff. If your pasture is close to where strangers can easily walk past they might end up throwing their trash into the pasture or feed your animals shit you don't want them to eat
- checking up on the animals is a hassle. It is much more difficult to spot sick animals than it would be in the barn. Other behaviours are difficult to be observed as well and when trying to time stuff like lambing you can't really have that
- the handling systems omg, imagine trying to do all that work outside on pasture or trying to get the animals inside everytime you need to check their feet or they need shearing etc
- you can't fertilize in a systemic manner bc the animals shit where they want. So you'll end up with spots where the plants get too many nutrients and thus grow well next year and spots where that isn't the case. You'll end up with a patchy pasture if you don't know how to take care of that
- The animals pick their way through the types of plants they find tasty and leave the rest. That can lead to overgrazed spots
- the stress on the pasture from their feet can also do damage. With cattle that's a more serious problem than with sheep but still
- Out on pasture the animals do not eat everything up, meaning you have a cost for lost feed basically. Agriculture is a tough business and you need to save money where it's reasonable to do so.
- management can be a bitch. It really requires a lot of education and/or experience to do it right and get the most of it without doing too much damage to your pasture. If you make too many mistakes the losses from it can cost you quite a bit, especially later down the road.
It isn't really easy to make that decision. Anyway, great video as always Sandi! Thanks!

If they were outside you’d still have those who would complain that they didn’t have shelter from rain sun,wind, etc, etc so no you still couldn’t win with everyone
There can be free roam in a way like have access in the barn in out. I honestly love her barn and what she dose for her animals I like she’s a very good animal care giver and she obviously loves her animals. It would be cool though if they can be outside and eat on grass and run. She has a lot of space and I think it may benefit for her problem with space the mama and lambs can stay inside while they are lambing and the boys and sheep that are not lambing or have babies can go outside and have a small space at the end of the barn where they can come inside eat, get shelter and I think it’ll be cool. Wolf_ Girl_03 Sandi talked about this idea before and it basically boiled down to cost of the land needed and protection from predators but if I remember correctly it would cost a lot for more the land but I think your idea is awesome, I was raised in the country and that’s what we did for our animals

It would take a lot of fencing and trained protection animals to keep them safe in our big country. Every one of you free-ranging people has no idea of the cost of farms, farm animals, feed, veterinarian bills, and farm equipment. How about this, we will not give you advice on wrangling cats and you leave this lady and her sheep alone?

Hi Sandi, I really like seeing you drive the multitasking vehicle. Looks like fun. You just whip around backwards and forwards. I’m sure day after day, year after year, lots and lots of practice. Many chores require skills that we forget to appreciate because we are oriented to the tasks they are needed to achieve. Seeing this gave me inspiration to redo my bunny cages! I do have questions though. Have you thought about maybe to check the different breeds hooves? Not every day but pick a random assortment of maybe 10 ewes and a few bucks (separate of course) and check their hooves. I know you were struggling with finding timing for it between breeding season and this might help you figure out how often certain groups will need them done. Only wishing you the best love the channel!

Awesome job!!!! Lots of hard work and it really looks great!!!! It is very easy for people with no experience to make suggestions!!!! You explained it well!!! For those that don't know, coyotes work in a pack and sheep are very vulnerable!!!!!! That alone is reason enough to keep them inside!!!!!
Worse, coyotes and dogs (!) can just go on killing sprees where they just chase the sheep, biting them, and then moving on to another sheep. They don't even eat the bodies, just leave the sheep wounded and dying. If coyotes chase pregnant ewes, the ewes will often abort their lambs, killing the lambs and often killing the ewes.

Beside doing a good job 👍 as farmer , what I do like ( as you said in couple previous vlogs) is the fact that you try somehow give some more work to Carissa, make her some extra hours now that she got a car to pay etc, that’s very respectful in a times like this when an employer would try to cut off the work and the money income... a very huge Thumb Up for that and a Bro 👊 Fist 😃 . You guys stay healthy and keep up positivity every day, even though there are some haters out there, I would curse on them for you but i also know it’s not worth. Wish you all a sunny summer.
Only the dedicated farmer understands the feeling of gratification, pride and relief of a clean barn. It’s tedious at best but once it’s done, AHHHHHHHHHHH. There’s no better feeling ! Kudos to you !
Just like a house with a husband and kids (any age) and pets; the ahhh lasts for approximately 10 minutes and then it’s back to… “what did I do to deserve this!” Actually it seems that the sheep probably appreciate their clean dwelling more than the house dwellers do and you may get a good 20 minutes of pride in the barn… (no dishes left in the sink, right?)
If you do too Good of a Cleaning Job, the Owner may offer you a full-time job working there. 😬👍

Well, now, aren't you superior and judgemental. There are thousands in f people who watch Sandi's videos, like me, who never grew up or near farms. We are here because we love animals, are interested in farm life, and love watching and learning about animals. Also because Sandi is not superior, critical, and judgemental, and because she patiently answers our many questions and teaches us about sheep and farm life. I also thought sheep should be on pastures, it just seemed more natural to me. Today, however, Sandi kindly explained why she doesn't pasture her sheep, and it makes a lot of sense. I learned something, Sandi earned even more respect by treating her viewers with respect, and we are happy to have learned something new about sheep and farm m life. See how nice Sandi is? Be like Sandi. Oh, and FYI, I have never bought fish and released them to a pond.

You really get after it, girlfriend, when you decide to clean!! I am impressed!! I love seeing sheep on green hills and pastures. But your sheep are safe, easily observable in case of illness or lambing problems, much easier to manage. I’ve watched videos of sheep farms in pasture and it looks sooo hard!!not efficient.
I can see where the Bobcat you all have comes in handy on the farm and you all have so many implements for it too and it can do so much throughout the year. The sheep appreciate how well you take care of them and I can understand raising the sheep inside rather than outside due to the threat from the weather, and from the predators as well.
I live in Collingwood, Ontario and the Coyotes are horrible here for pets I cant imagine how the farmers feel Glad yours are safe inside from the wild Dogs.
